The hotel provided exactly the retreat we needed. The beach just below the hotel is lovely. I could reach it easily even though I had a bad case of sciatica at the time. Breakfast was freshly made. We didn't need any of the nearby restaurants and had all dinners in the hotel. Specifically Isaac from the staff helped a lot. But the owners couple, who run the hotel as their calling not primarily a business and everyone working there gave us the impression we were part of the community of this family-run place.
The last 20 km road there are in rough shape, but a higher clearance vehicle works. The locals don't even need that. For roads in Costa Rica, I would recommend, get the app WAZE, which is accurate and current.
I couldn't come up with anything negative.
I was reading reviews complaining about tropical animals. Well, it is a tropical place. We were amazed by the howler- monkeys, iguanas, vultures and other animals.

Super friendly, helpful staff. Provided the extra help we needed happily. Loved watching the different animals during breakfast.
To know ahead of time the type & length of road to access the beautiful property.

Wonderful location, we were given the best room with an amazing seaview. Birds everywhere, howling monkeys and lots of monitor lizards. A very good Peruvian (fish) restaurant just around the corner. Breakfast is served outside, and was very diverse and always fresh!
A pity that our arrival in the evening was made difficult due to the absence of a sign indicating the entrance of the hotel. We had to call to have the guidance needed, even with the car navigation it was hard to find. Please put up a sign!

What I enjoyed the most was the amazing owners and staff. They felt like family. The hard work and attentiveness to everyone's needs were extremely exceptional. Never have I ever met such a great staff team. The food was amazing. My entire experience felt like a dream come true. I miss all the staff already so much that I am already planning my next trip back. I definitely recommend it.

It should be mentioned that it is not appropriate to everybody, it is not appropriate for those with mobility issues.

Huge modern room with white ceramic floor. The king bed was wonderful with reading lights on both sides. Lots of room to put all of our stuff. Open rain type shower was really nice and is connected to a large vanity. The room has a sliding glass door to a patio with a hammock overlooking the ocean. The dining areas for the restaurant are each secluded in the trees overlooking the ocean for an incredible private dining experience. Breakfast is included and is brought to you each morning at one of the secluded tables. The breakfast was 5 star type with the best homemade juice smoothy. Each day it starts with an array of fruit, toast, juice, and coffee. And then they bring you the main course which is a full breakfast. The bar/kitchen is located right off of the beach and is open all day. I have to mention that the guide fishing was some of the best ocean fishing I have ever had. On a half day trip we caught Grouper, Rooster fish, Yellow Jack, Black Tuna, Red Snapper, and Spanish Mackerel. Then they cleaned up the fish for us and the staff at the kitchen cooked them up and served them with sides. We had the them only cook the Grouper and it was so good we ate too much! This is an amazing place and the owners are working as we speak on some major improvements. We can't wait to go back next year and stay for a week instead of 3 nights.
The 15 miles to get there once you get off of the main road is a one hour trip over pot holes, and washboard ruts with one car bridges. Do not drive this road with small car! You need a small to mid size SUV so you have clearance or just book a transfer shuttle. I am sure this road will be maintained better at some point, but for our trip it was a long slow and very bumpy ride. But, maybe that is part of why this place is so special? The road adds to the adventure.

The location is beautiful. The beach is protected by a reef so the water is calm for swimming and perfect for children. The food was excellent, served in a very informal setting, the restaurant is open air with a few seats at the counter for hotel guests and covered picnic tables too. The staff are friendly and professional.
There is no signage, so this location is difficult to find, unless you are in the know. The roads in this part of Costa Rica are challenging, so be forewarned.

The rooms were lovely and the staff were amazing. They couldn’t do enough for you and they all really made our stay, such lovely people! Also, the best rice and shrimp I’ve ever had!
It didn’t have a pool nor communal seating area

Our room is perfect and it has an amazing view of the beach. We were happy with everything - the service, the staff, the food at the restaurant and also the dogs. it was truly one of the best places we’ve stayed in.

The food served at Rancho Cocobolo were very generous in serving size and the breakfasts were really tasty. The staff were brilliant in helping to organise trips from San Juanillo and really looked after me.

This is a beautiful part of the shoreline that combines sandy beach and rocks with tidepools full of life. The wood furniture in the rooms was made by the owner from local wood and is gorgeous. The interior design is both rustic and modern, and it really does have a "boutique" ambience. Excellent breakfast is served in open air covered picnic table nitches. Lunch and dinner are also available, as well as drinks [including cocktails] from their beachhouse restaurant. A couple of other restaurants are within walking distance.
South of Tamarindo the roads along the Nicoya coast are bumpy dirt and gravel, which was okay since we had rented a 4x4 Jimny. But it did discourage any trips elsewhere once we arrived, and i think i'd go a bit stir crazy if i tried to stay for longer than 4 days. The feeling of a remote location was hampered by the weekend beach crowd of Tico locals, so i suggest avoiding the weekend if you are looking for peace & quiet.

Breakfast was beautiful and bountiful. We also enjoyed cocktails, really good pizza and ceviche. The entire staff was welcoming, friendly and accommodating. The rooms were spacious and beautiful with many thoughtful touches.
When we arrived for check-in we were unsure of where to go. It would be helpful to have instructions to go to the Cocobolo bar/restaurant on the beach when our reservations were confirmed.

Upon arriving to Cocobolo Beach Boutique Hotel, we were not sure what to think. There was no signage that instructed you where to check in. We finally figured out that you check in at the cute Bar Rancho on the beach. The staff and owner were beyond wonderful and always greeted you and your request with a smile. They are in the process of building a larger restaurant on the upper level of the property that I am sure will be amazing upon completion. The rooms are very clean and decorated perfectly. The food from the Bar Rancho was fantastic and presented beautifully. This is a small Costa Rican town and you definitely feel emerged in the local vibe and the friendliness of the locals. There are a few other restaurants within walking distance and a small mini super for groceries and beverages. We definitely would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a true experience of Costa Rica and its people. This is not a five star all inclusive resort if that is what you are looking for, there is no pool or spa. the beach is gorgeous and good for snorkeling but you will need water shoes as there are many rocks in the water.

Adjacent to Lovely Beach, Spacious Rooms,
Unfortunately the standards and service of the hotel do not match the cost they are charging...poor service and staff attitude from the moment we arrived, no breakfast choice given and only plated and served cold every day ..no information in rooms about anything, no drinking water in rooms , difficult access you really need a 4x4 . We booked this due to the good reviews ...very strange we never were introduced to the owners perhaps they were away .. we are on a long road trip and this sadly is the most disappointing hotel we have stayed at in Costa Rica ..must say the waiter from Ostional was really nice.

Nice beach area, good stuff, great view to the ocean, spacious rooms, peaceful location and proximity to surfing beaches of Nosara.
The infrastructure is not so good - tough dirty road,
no restaurant on site - only bar which works for dinner only till 7pm, mixed feelings about the breakfast, because it was repetitive, bad housekeeping, poor air conditioning - very noisy and not affective, no flexible hotel policies and no care from the owners. We expected more with this price, as we saw better standards for the same amount of money.

This is a gem, beautiful location, beach view, lots of activities, and the woodwork in the rooms and around the property was gorgeous. As great as all these attributes were, the amazing staff exceeded them. Whether finding a guide to see the turtles, booking a fishing trip or zip lining, Zac had all of the contacts and quickly set things up for us. It was an unforgettable experience seeing the turtles come ashore and lay there eggs and watching our son real in a tuna. You won’t go wrong staying at Cocobolo.
We liked everything. We had a car with us, so were able to drive the few miles to see the turtles. If traveling without a car, you might want to ask about transportation options to the different activities in the area.

Secluded and well-hidden in the trees, the Cocobolo Beach Hotel is a jewel overlooking a beautiful beach that doubles as a small harbour for the local fishermen. After you check-in and meet the wonderful staff at the small beach shack, you are taken to a spacious and cosy room, with a huge shower and stunning view on the bay and the Pacific Ocean.
We loved every single minute of our stay and we could rest in just 5 days more than in any other place we visited. Extra kudos for the fresh and delicious food they serve (we even had fresh lobsters of the day, brought by the local fishermen, for dinner!).
We have to extend our most grateful thanks to the owners, Lior and Karen, and all their incredibly kind staff - they run the business like a family and it shows! - we can't wait to come back and see them all again!
