This beautiful, spacious, Hawaiian house was our home-base for our week stay on the Big Island. Has everything you could possibly need including all beach necessities! Our favorite beaches were Mauna Kea and Hapuna. Beds & linens were very comfy. No air conditioning but multiple fans in every room. We all got the biggest kick out of the wild turkeys roaming the yard. And the Hawaiian book collection was impressive, basically a library, information on everything!

This was the cleanest and best stocked VRBO that we've ever stayed in!! The house is beautifully decorated and very comfortable. The view from the deck and the lawn is spectacular and we enjoyed giorgeous sunsets every evening. It was the perfect homebase for exploring the north coast. Pololu Overlook, Hawi, the Kohala Mountain Road, Keokea Beach Park, Pu'ukohala Heiau, Hapuna Beach, Spencer Beach Park and lunch at the Lava Lava Club were terrific. Communiation with our host was great. He was easy to reach and provided us with loads of useful info. We look forward to returning!

We had an amazing time and the house fit our needs perfectly. Well supplied in every way. The main living area is open and breezy. The lanai and yard looking toward the ocean is heavenly.

Simply excellent. The many 5 star ratings are well deserved. The location was perfect for following the sunny weather wherever it maybe. The house was clean, well equipped, comfortable and felt authentic. Richard was a great host, both before and during our trip. He afforded us privacy and providing local insight as needed.
Thank you Richard.

Great hidden spot. Has everything you need. Fans in every room but does get warm during the day but we were out exploring so not as warm in late afternoon/early evening. About 30 to 45 minutes to restaurants and shops. Macadamia factory/shop is close to house. Koholoa Burger and Taco is good for quick lunch and ice cream.

We absolutely loved staying here. The nightly sunsets were stunning. We loved all the amenities in the kitchen as we cooked and/or grilled each night. We made use of the cooler, blankets and chairs for our daily visits to the beach. We enjoyed coffee and reading on the deck every morning. We loved our time on the Big Island.

Fantastic sunset views from beautiful garden and lawn. Perfect for a family of four. Well equipped kitchen, comfy for downtime. Plenty of beach toys. Great location north of Kona, enjoyed the dark, starry skies. Good communication with owner. Highly recommend.

The property had everything we could ask for. The foliage made it seem we were secluded. I had originally booked this property prior to COVID and then everything shut down. Owner was amazing with communication. Would stay again.

This is what a Hawaiian home should be. Lots of great air flow, beautiful lani, and a great ocean view. We'd stay here again.

This was our 4th time on the Big Island and was my favorite lodging so far - would love to stay again. There are a variety of hang-out spaces throughout the house which was nice for our group to be able to spread out. The views are spectacular, and the property feels very private despite having neighboring houses (well-blinded by fences/plants). The landscaping is really unique and well-maintained. The beds were comfortable, and the shower had great water pressure. Well-stocked kitchen supplies and beach gear made our trip even better! The location is great as it's not a far ride to Waimea where you can find major grocers/pharmacies and great restaurant options.

Great place to stay in the Northwest part of the island
Beautiful beach cottage with lots of charm and character. Great view of the ocean. The house has everything you need. Richard is a great host and communicator; very nice and accommodating. The house does get hot during the day, but it cools down quickly at night. It shouldn't be a problem if you plan to do activities outside the house during the hot hours of the day. Again, great house and wonderful host.

Relaxing atmosphere
After three days of family wedding festivities, this was the best place to stay. Quiet, nice house and great view. No AC, but plenty of fans, breeze from the ocean, and cool evenings. Even some Geckos outside to delight my grandson.

Outstanding vacation spot
This house was perfect for our family vacation! Awesome beachy decor gives the home a surf shack vibe, but nicer! Comfy beds and pillows, great water pressure, loads of books about Hawaii, sand toys, beach towels, coolers, snorkel stuff, just bring your suit! The perfect location for exploring Kohala and areas North of the big resorts. We didn’t want to leave!

Hawaiian Vibes
Richard is an exceptional host. His home is impeccably clean and well maintained. We loved the open kitchen area and outdoor porch seating which overlooks the professionally landscaped backyard complete with relaxing lounge chairs, mature shade trees, exotic orchids, and plenty of native plants. The unobstructed views of the ocean, especially at sunset are stunning and tranquil. Inside, Richard has paid attention to every detail making this our favorite vrbo of the trip. We were greeted with cold Corona beer and water in the fridge and a very clean and well stocked kitchen. The sleeping arrangements were perfect for our family of 5. The beds were comfortable, sheets were crisp, and pillows were plentiful. The bathrooms had ample fresh towels and travel toiletries.
Richard supplies wake boards, beach towels, coolers, beach umbrellas, and an assortment of snorkle gear. He provides resources on local activities and books on native flora and fauna. Conveniently located within an easy drive of Waimea and Kailua-Kona. Richard's Kohala Estates home is quintessential 'Old Hawaii' at its best! We would not hesitate to stay here again!

Great house and view
Our family really enjoyed our stay. Richard had the house nicely designed and prepared. We stayed for a week and took a day trip each day to explore the northern part of the island.

Beautiful and relaxing
We had a terrific stay at Richard's home. We loved the openness of the kitchen/dining/living areas and the privacy of the bedrooms. The house is very comfortable and we used almost all of the space during our 5-day stay (we did not use the third bedroom since we were just a party of 3). The yard is also beautiful and incredible for watching the amazing sunsets. We've been to the Big Island multiple times and we keep coming back to this area because of the proximity to the beaches, towns like Hawi and Waimea, as well several nearby establishments and attractions in Kawaihae. Richard was easy to communicate with and provided lots of helpful information. The library he has created in the house is awesome! No reservations at all in recommending this home to others.

Magical Sunsets
Loved this house! If you are looking for a relaxing vacation away from city life, this place is for you. The sunset views are amazing, we made sure we were back at the house each evening to enjoy the view. Plus, there are some great sandy beaches near by, be sure to check out Hapuna and Mauna Kea beaches. The house is stocked with beach chairs and umbrellas.

Great home for a group/couple
We wholly enjoyed staying at this home and actually wondered if we should have stayed there our entire trip! (Our final 3 days we spent in Kona.).
Would recommend this stay to friends and family. It’s very private, the neighborhood is generally quiet as well (some local dog/pet noise.). We found a public shoreline access trail maybe a quarter mile from the house that we had entirely to ourselves! The view is fantastic and the house had all the amenities we wanted. (Do note the beach gear!).
Loved it. Only detractor from 5 stars would be the cleaning price (but I get it, depending on groups/beach usage,) and a short drive to get into town.

Pictures don’t do it justice!
We took our family staycation here and really enjoyed our time. The house is beautiful as well as the yard. Careful detail was obviously put into the the decor of the home and also in the comfort of guests. The kitchen was well equipped with everything we needed to cook. We stayed 3 nights and wish we could’ve stayed longer! It was especially wonderful that we were able to bring our dogs. Only thing to note is that this part of the island tends to be pretty hot, but the house has plenty of fans and a nice breeze that rolls through in the evenings. We will be staying again soon!

Amazing and wonderful, didn't want to leave
House was impeccably clean and well equipped. Richard was extremely quick and responsive to all our enquiries both before and during our stay. View was breathtaking and just as we had hoped. Loved the vintage Hawaiian style and theme of the homes décor; we wish this was our home.
Next time we are on the island we shall certainly want to stay here again.

Great location and beautiful views
The house was great and had everything you needed except air conditioning. With temperatures in the upper 80s it was not very pleasant in the afternoons and evenings. Other than that, awesome stay…loved the covered lanai and the yard looking out to the ocean!

Immediately felt at home. Want to slow down and feel the Aloha spirit? This is the place for you!
The owner's attention to detail made this house our favorite property on the island. Perfect and private gardens and lawn area to enjoy endless views of Muana Kea, ocean sunsets and stargazing galore. There are beautiful toads and lizards in the garden that the kids loved looking at. Toads could be poisonous Cane Toads so make sure they only look. All the beach fun and toys you need. The place was perfectly clean and kitchen was stocked with coffee, oil and spices for cooking. Could use more dishes and silverware though. Just 5 minutes to Hapuna beach, best fish tacos ever at Surf Burger, and easy access to the gorgeous Kohala coast. We will definitely be back!

Away from the hustle and bustle
We loved the house. It was perfect for my family. The location was really great because it was away from the touristy places and hustle, however the location made so we had to drive at least 45 minutes to reach Kona and a couple of hours to get to Hilo. A rental car is certainly required. The house was well equipped and we found everything we needed and then some. Richard was always quick to respond to any questions I had as well.
The only real drawback was not having any air conditioning. It was fine at night but almost unbearable during the daytime.
All and all, we loved our stay.

Great stay, wonderful house
This house was great and even better in person than in pictures. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and we loved looking at all the plants and watching/listening to the birds each day. It has an adorable 60's Hawaii vibe that is carried out in the decorations throughout the house. The kitchen was well stocked and the beach equipment was great! The state park beach 10 minutes away was beautiful. Only downside would be location. It is about 45 minutes from Kona so shopping is a bit far unless you want to shop at the crazy expensive resort grocery stores. Would highly recommend this adorable house, we loved our stay!

Peaceful and Beautiful
This property is, as always, a very peaceful space, open, comfortable. Everything you might need is here! The view of the ocean and the yard for lounging make this a beautiful oasis. We come as often as we can!!

Just what we wanted. Private well kept property. Great view.
Great communication. Clean and well supplied. The beach towels, chairs, bodyboards and umbrellas are a great and welcome touch.

Awesome - relaxing - felt like home.
Richard leaves nothing to chance with his beautiful home away from home. We were so impressed with everything. Richard was responsive to our inquiries...the beds were soft....the kitchen was well-stocked....the beach hardware was all functional....the yard and grounds were perfect for morning yoga and paddle-ball. Most of all, we had some great conversations and good times made possible by the relaxing environment Richard provided.
