About this lodge

The Villa is a true escape we know you will enjoy for its foremost location on the river directly adjacent to the National Park and the Jedediah Smith State Park. It is situated on a spectacular spot that exemplifies the Pacific Northwest and its pristine rivers. Our home away from home offers comfort and relaxation while exploring with friends and family our Wild Rivers Coast.

The Villa has a prime location with a 180° view of the Smith River, the cleanest river in California. Newly renovated from top to bottom, our home offers an experience like no other on the river. Wake up to views of the river and to the sound of it rushing by. Enjoy your coffee by big bay windows or dine in the evening by the light of a sunset as the river meanders by on the way to the Pacific.

Our family’s riverfront hideaway is located in Hiouchi, California, just 15 minutes East of Crescent City and outside the coastal zone and so enjoys warmer weather throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall.

The house is quietly stationed at the end of a cul de sac which grants plenty of privacy. It is situated on 1.1 acres of gardens and ponds and has a deck that runs the entire length of the house, as well as a large sunroom that allows viewing of the river from inside by all. The architecture is suggestive of a provencal village in Denmark with white paint and red roof, providing a classic ambiance with all the modern comforts to make your stay in the heart of the redwoods memorable and relaxing.

The Villa has been extensively renovated using top of the line finishes including granite tile, new white oak hardwood flooring, as well as new appliances, lighting and furniture. An open floor plan and big windows allow unobstructed views of the redwoods and the Smith River.

No matter the season, your visit will enjoy the outdoors as well as indoors. The first floor offers an expansive kitchen-dining room layout. The dining area features plenty of seating with a table for 12 to host family gatherings. After dinner, enjoy the fireplace in the living room, while curling up on one of several couches to enjoy an evening’s conversation or TV viewing on a 65” flat screen. We provide plenty of games and reading materials to entertain the entire family. The first floor’s, large sunroom serves a dual purpose as it is also our game room with a regulation pool table.

When you are ready for sleep, chose from our 5 mountain-style decorated bedrooms:

The Madrone Master Suite: located on the second floor, king bed, spectacular view of the river from its private balcony, electric fireplace and master bath.

The Doug Fir Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, multiple windows overlooking the river

The Redwood Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view.

The Alder Room: located on the second floor, 2 twin beds and bunk beds, garden and river views.

The Maple Room: located on the first floor, queen bed, garden view with electric wood stove and private entrance.

The Redwoods and the Smith River are a short drive to the entrance of Jedediah National and State Park. The manicured lawn and garden are an incredible treat in the Spring, Summer and Fall, and offer two ponds, Japanese maples, and unique trees and shrubs found nowhere else in the County. Just up the road from the Park is the quaint little town of Hiouchi, which offers a 9 hole golf course, a cafe with BigFoot size pancakes and a small hamlet store for obtaining groceries and gas.

Because we live locally, we can offer a great variety of suggestions for your trip with places to visit and explore including hikes through the redwoods, walks on the beaches or coastal dunes, whale watching, a visit to Battery Point lighthouse, horseback rides on the beaches or in the redwoods, bird watching some of the 413 plus species known to visit Del Norte County and of course fishing on the beautiful Smith River, known for its world record salmon and steelhead fishing.

Such a gem of a place. The view off the river and the backyard is totally underrated. Plenty of space for my family reunion to gather. We roasted hot dogs one night at the fire pit after a day of hiking in the redwoods and playing in the Smith river. Location can’t be beat

We absolutely loved our stay at Casa Del Norte. The house was exactly like the description, it had everything you would need for a long weekend and felt private and cozy. Perfect location whether you want to hike or explore the coast. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking to vacation in the redwoods.

We truly enjoyed our stay at this home. It was spacious enough for our large group and had plenty of gathering spots so we never felt like we were sitting on top of each other. Having the windows open to hear the river was so relaxing! We had everything we needed and the beds were so comfortable.

Our trip was for our son’s wedding. The house was perfect for a family gathering. Chris was on top of a minor plumbing issue - it was taken care of in no time. I would highly recommend this house if you are headed to the Crescent City area!

Location was absolutely beautiful. In the Redwoods. River access from the house is not easy, but hop in the car for a quick one minute drive with easy access to the river behind the house. Easy 15 minute drive into Crescent City for beach or shopping. Super comfortable home furnishings. Everything we needed was there. Owners were great to work with.

TL; DR- Stay here, it's amazing! Our stay here was absolute perfection! We stayed 6 nights, with 10 adults (ages 25-61) & had the BEST time. The listing is accurate, it's super clean, & pictures do not do it justice! Favorites: - Location: Nestled in the Jed Smith forest you're in the heart of nature but with wi-fi, plumbing, & Crescent City only 12 minutes away. Neighbors on one side but due to the landscaping you'll feel totally secluded. - THE VIEWS! Each window overlooks grand forest, the river, or lush gardens. A feast for the eyes & the air smells incredible! - Super comfy mattresses, great pillows, & fantastic sheets. - The (softened) tap water tastes GREAT. We typically prefer bottled water but all chose the tap water over store bought! - Quality kitchen appliances + tools; grill + firepit were great too. - Actual comfortable adult seating for the whole group in the living room + dining. - Chris (the host) was communicative & friendly. - Thoughtful details everywhere. Notes: - Master bdrm has no curtains on the river facing windows. Stunning views + private but bring an eye mask if not an early riser. - Direct river access but good shoes & some scrambling required. Easy river access is just down the road. - No AC upstairs but ceiling fans + opened (screened) windows kept it plenty cool. Don't miss: - Sunrise/sunset on the deck with a warm beverage - Breakfast at Hiouchi Cafe - Stout Grove This is the kind of place you want to keep coming back to. ♡
