About this apartment rental
Sapodilla is a charming stone clad cottage situated in a two acre garden on a hillside overlooking Falmouth & English Harbours. The owner built the original house 48 years ago and Sapodilla is her guest cottage set below the pool in a very private part of the garden. The garden is filled with indigenous trees and flowers with many palms and a couple of “coppers” filled with water lilies. A new project this year is a beautiful lily pond which can be seen from the veranda. A wonderful place to sit and meditate or just watch the dragonflies and birds. The palm fringed swimming pool, set away from the main house offers calm and privacy and lovely views. When you have had to much sun. There is a lovely breezy gazebo with a fabulous view over the garden, valley and bay. The garden is filled with birds, especially the three varieties of hummingbirds busy working away at the many flowers. There is a feeder hanging on the veranda for closer observation.
Springhill has 3/4 electricity provided by solar panels, and collects most of its water from rainfall. The pool has a salt water system. Water is also heated by solar power. The cottage has its own Eco garbage and compost buckets, both emptied for you by the maid or the owners. We try to live an Eco life and leave few footprints on our beautiful island.
The cottage is small and compact, but the Veranda makes it feel spacious. The four poster Queen size bed is comfy and you can lie in bed and enjoy the view over the pond and the bay. Maid service is included once a week, a second day can be included on request.
There are wonderful hikes right out of the garden gate. Hiking to Rendezvous Bay is one of Antigua’s five star adventures – from Springhill, you are already en route, and coming home to plunge in the pool and rinse off the salt and grabbing a cold rum punch in your cottage – makes it even more special. The hike takes between 30 – 40 minutes to one of the best beaches in the Caribbean, where you are often the only people on the beach! You can hike further to Carlisle bay or Wallings Dam in the rainforest. The owner can organize guides for these longer hikes.
A top class equestrian centre started by the owner is 3 minutes walk down the hill. The centre offers BHS (British Horse society) instruction and trails around the pretty valley and wild beaches. If you like riding and your partner is a sailor (or would like to learn) this is the ideal spot to stay. The owners are very keen sailors, and would be pleased to help organize this.
It is possible to spend a holiday at Sapodilla without a car, but we would recommend renting one. The cottage has its own garden entrance and driveway. English Harbour is 7 minutes drive away with all its historical sites, great bars and restaurants, and a stunning beach. There are two good supermarkets nearby. Having a car gives you the freedom to explore the many beautiful beaches, and other hidden treasures. The owners would be pleased to help you with any information.
Previous guests have all loved the peace and tranquility, and yet the nearness of all the life in English and Falmouth Harbours.

Beautiful peaceful property. Views from the pool and gazebo were stunning

Our stay at Sapodilla cottage was lovely, relaxing, and hands down the best vacation I've experienced. When we arrived the host had stocked a starter amount of food so we didn't have to go in search of a grocery after our flight and drive. The cottage is so private and set in amongst the most beautiful garden and trees. I kept thinking how generous the owners were to share this little slice of paradise. We slept under netting with all the doors and windows open. The breeze along with the song birds singing during the day and tree frogs at night was delightful. We had the swimming pool to our selves and the view of Falmouth Harbor from the pool and deck was amazing. The owners live on property but we rarely saw them and when we did the conversation was enjoyable, we looked forward to running into them. They are true stewards to the environment. They make use of solar power, recycle and you can sense the respect for nature while staying there. Janie set out sugar water and fresh water for the birds. Watching the bananaquits feed and bathe along with hummingbirds was delightful. My favorite though of the cottage was the stone layed attached outdoor shower. Everything about this stay was perfect. Missing the tranquility of that little cottage, until next time.

The hosts made sure we were comfortable and took care of issues as they came up, (they were only very minor). They made sure we knew about attractions on the island such as what to do and restaurant recommendations which were spot on.
The hosts made sure we had some supplies to tide us over until we could get to the grocer such as bread, butter, a pineapple (delicious) among other things.
Having private secure parking was great. The seclusion was welcome.
There was a great view of the harbour. We spent quite a bit of time in the pool as well.
We had a great 21 day vacation.

Everything was amazing...Janie ≥offrey were so friendly&helpful...such sweet people, with big hearts...the stone cottage set in the hills of Antigua was so quaint...the pool was amazing...the Hummingbirds&the other small birds were amazing to feed&watch...to be able to have your window's &doors wide open was spectacular...having little bird's flying in to the kitchen was magical...I almost hate to rave about this hidden gem...because I want it all to ourselves...we definitely plan on returning in 2025

Picture a small stone studio with a vaulted ceiling, a huge verandah, a 4-poster bed, mini kitchen (with a fabulously stocked fridge thank you Jeannie!) and the BEST outdoor shower ever! It’s tucked into a tropical garden, breezy and private. You’ll be greeted by the sugar loving bananaquits and hummingbirds in the morning, and lulled to sleep by tree frogs and crickets at night. And just up the steps behind the cottage is an amazing pool with an incredible view of Falmouth Harbour and a lovely large gazebo for shade and shelter from the 5 min showers. English Harbour is closeby with restaurants and shops and don’t miss the Shirley Heights BBQ parties are Thurs and Sunday. The steel band starts at 4:30, the dancing continues all evening!
You do need a Jeep to get here and to explore, but it’s well worth it if you like the “off the beaten path” kinda place! You’ll feel like you’ve been away in paradise!

We loved our stay so much, and the hosts go way above and beyond to ensure your happiness. I worked remotely for many days and the internet was great. What a special place, with fallen flowers lining the window pains and walking paths. Thanks so much for taking such great care of us on our very long stay! Hope to see you again soon.

The cottage was ideal for us with the added feature of truly magnificent views and amazing gardens. The owners
could not have been of more assistance as nothing was a problem or too much trouble.A car or better still a 4 wheel drive vehicle is essential if you wish to explore the island which is certainly well worth doing as the cottage is a little remote thus ensuring its peaceful setting ! Thank you so much for a truly great holiday.David and Caroline

We had a really lovely, tranquil and relaxing 2 week stay.
Janie and Jeffrey were lovely hosts and couldn't do enough for us .
The pool area is to die for as is the view!!
All the dogs were lovely and came to check on us daily.
We hired a 4x4, which was ideal to get up to the property as the road surface is heavily rutted.
All in all a great time was had

This was our second time to Janie and Geoffrey's stunning property (April 2 to April 16, 2023). We had the use of both cottages, Sapodilla and Birds 'N Bees plus a spacious bedroom suite. We were an extended family group - five adults and two young grandchildren. Please read my detailed review on the Birds 'N Bees site. We highly recommend Janie's magical property. We cannot imagine staying anywhere else while in Antigua.

We spent a week in the cottage to celebrate my wife's birthday. We loved everything about it. The owners were very nice and had stocked the refrigerator with water, pineapple juice, fruit, bread, butter and some very tasty rum. There were some fellow travelers staying in a second cottage on another part of the property and we became fast friends. The pool and gazebo were great. I honestly couldn't give a higher recommendation.

Ever wonder what the Garden of Eden was like? Janie's two acre property answers that question, minus the serpents. Each unit is fully stocked with everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay and they are wired for 110v appliances. No need to worry about mosquitoes without window and door screens. The units have a mosquito trap, powerful fans, and custom made nets for the comfy beds. The saltwater pool and deck with gazebo overlooking Falmouth Harbor is so relaxing; the lily pond is serene; and the quiet solitude is regenerative. This was my second stay at Janie's property and I really wouldn't even consider staying anywhere else on the south side of Antigua. It is conveniently located to reach many beaches and attractions, some of which are within walking distance. The property is absolutely beautiful and you couldn't ask for better hosts who have a lot of knowledge and suggestions and know how to respect one's privacy. It truly is perfect for a natural, beautiful getaway!

Tiny piece of paradise
Others have well described this charming cottage overlooking Falmouth Bay so we will stick to what a great stay we had. Our best experience was still on the porch in the morning sun with probably 20 Sugar Birds (as they're locally called) lining up and chatting at the bowl of sugar water. Janie has over 40 years knowing and loving Antigua and she makes you believe you should do the same.

Delightful, cool cottage set in a garden surrounded by bull finches, bananaquits and humming birds. So lovely we almost want to keep it a secret. Janie and Jeremy could not have done more to make our stay so wonderful.

One week in Antigua
After a week in a group of 10 sharing a large villa this was an oasis of calm and beauty for our second week. If you enjoy simple, basic ‘away from it all’ this is it! Peace and quiet, in touch with nature and utterly charming. Views over Falmouth Harbour from the hillside set in a beautiful garden. Janie and Geoffrey were perfect hosts. We will be back!!

Paradise for 10 days
Wow, what an unbelievable vacation. We booked thus little cottage as a get away. It was perfect for the times we are living in. We had the freedom to come and go as needed. We enjoyed being part of nature by having the ability to leave windows and doors open all night. Each morning we woke up to enjoy our coffee with the sunrise.
The location was ideal for hikes leaving right from the cottage. We were able to source food for picnics to Rendezvous Bay where I was able to snorkel and see a sting ray in the wild.
We enjoyed days of relaxing, exploration and chilling by the pool. Janie & Jeffrey were a pleasure they gave you space when you needed it, guidance on things to do and shared bits of their life on the island. If we go back to Antigua we will be booking this spot again.

Garden Setting with Flora and Fauna, saltwater swimming pool and easy access to Falmouth Harbor.r.
This Garden Cottage is located among a beautifully landscaped property. It is totally secluded and romantic, and there is no need to worry about mosquitoes. The owner has a device to ward them off and also sprays regularly. The whole experience was lovely and I can't wait to stay here again. I could easily stay a month. Wonderful walk to Rendezvous Bay. Easy access to central and west coast attractions. The onsite hosts are available and easily make suggestions for activities.

Charming, secluded slice of paradise!
I had an incredible stay at Janie's cottage!
I was charmed upon arrival by how lush the property was. Janie and her husband greeted me upon arrival. They are both lovely and have a great spirit. I only saw them a few moments over my week-long stay for a short and sweet conversation. I felt like I had the entire property to myself!
The cute, little cottage was covered in tropical foliage which attracted an array of visiting birds (I especially loved watching the sweet hummingbirds all week). It was exactly what I was looking for - a chance to unwind and connect to nature.
The room was stocked with lots of basics for the kitchen and bathroom. The bed was cozy and the net & fan did a great job of protecting me from mosquitos. I didn't get one bite!
My favorite part was the outdoor shower and lounging on the veranda by the pool with the most beautiful view.
Janie gave me a few great tips on beaches. They were really close by and a slice of heaven.
I stayed here alone and felt safe and well taken care of. I would most definitely return and would highly recommend it!

Beautiful garden setting
We had such a peaceful time in this tiny cottage. Although the local shops and beaches are within a short drive (along a rather bumpy track, it must be said!) it feels as though it’s in the middle of nowhere. The frogs lull you to sleep at night and the birds and lizards entertain during the day. The small pool with the big view is just a few steps away above the cottage. Janie was the perfect host, and went out of her way to meet our needs. Thank you for Sunday Janie! We’ll be back

The Birds and the Bees
Perhaps more accurately the birds and the lizards although we did rescue two bees from the pool!
A really beautiful setting and fascinating, interesting people that we wished to have more time to know. Their lovely dogds helped us not miss ours quite so much and the humming birds....well, not something you see too often in Blighty!
The local roads are......well, not really roads but the hire car survived although with a slow flat when we got back to the airport. This was a new experience for us despite being in Antigua every year (and sometimes twice per year) for twelve years or more. This, relatively out of the way location coupled with Geoffrey and Janie is a definite "must go" destination.

Magical Stay in Wonderland
My boyfriend and I spent 4 wonderfully peaceful nights at Sapodilla cottage in June 2019. The cottage is on the same property as the owners’ house and another rental cottage, but we felt total privacy and seclusion at the adorable, perfectly appointed cottage. The cottage is tiny, but it was exactly what we wanted: a perfect slice of paradise in a hand-built, curated garden Janie & Geoffrey have lovingly tended over the past 50 years. Hummingbirds, lizards, bougainvillea, plumeria, flamboyant trees provided a kaleidoscope of colors during the day, while at night we were lulled to sleep by the sound of frogs and crickets. The cottage has one of the loveliest outdoor showers of all time. It was very clean and we cooked almost all our meals on the electric burners or in the toaster oven provided. We used the charcoal grill for burgers one night. The pool is absolutely glorious and we only saw the other people staying there once. It is a 7-10 min drive from English Harbour and Nelson’s Dockyard, a UNESCO world heritage site not to be missed, from where you can do a historical hike to Pigeon Beach (which was great). Galleon Beach was about a 12 min drive, and had fabulous snorkeling (turtles and lots of colorful fish in the shipwreck—google or ask where the pieces of sunken ship can be found). We walked to Rendezvous Bay Beach every day from the cottage—it’s about a 1.75 mile walk/hike from the house on a dirt Jeep road—and had the entire beach to ourselves most times, except for the time we had the brilliant luck to witness a local conservation team unearth a leatherback turtle nest (complete with a baby leatherback hatchling!). Truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Communication with Janie was wonderful, she was very helpful and easy to get in touch with. (Ask her about rental cars as she has a friend with a company right down the street—we rented our own but hers would have been easier.) Geoffrey greeted us at the cottage and he is the kind of person you just love right away—on googling him I learned he is a renowned and revered sailor who holds racing records in the Caribbean and is very well loved by everyone he meets. We finally met Janie on our last night at the cottage (it truly is secluded there!) and she is wonderful, a true conservationist and a lovely, generous person with amazing stories. Ask her about riding horses in the ocean :) We could not have asked for a more perfect getaway. Janie, THANK YOU ENDLESSLY! We’ll be back ASAP! Xoxo

Serenity at Sapodilla
If you are looking for an island paradise of peace and beauty.....You need to book this studio cottage now !!! Janie & Geoffrey are warm and gracious hosts who willingly share their island property and knowledge of Antigua. My husband & I stayed at Sapodilla Cottage for 9 nights April 4-13th 2019.
The property is exactly as pictured and described with the cottage and pool featuring a view of Falmouth Harbour. You are surrounded by beautiful trees, flowering bushes, singing birds & several hummingbirds that visit the front porch. The cottage has everything you need for meal prep for dining on the front porch or at the table for two inside. The outside shower surrounded with stone and a roof of greenery is amazing!
Ammenities in Falmouth Harbour are nearby:Grocery shopping, Waterfront restaurants & clothing/gift stores. Gas station. Titi Car Rental. Roadside fruit/veggie stands, Bakery stand. Sweet T's Icecream/ Burgers/Fries etc. A short drive to English Harbour; Nelsons Dockyard,; Pigeon Beach to dine at Catherine's By The Sea: & Shirley Heights on Thursday evening for the steel drum's concert & BBQ.
We rented a Jeep Wrangler which was perfect for driving on the paved island roads, as well as offroading to Rendezvous Beach.
We had visited Antigua by cruise ship twice before & had desired to return for an extended visit. This was our first VRBO experience and we are 110% satisfied with the property. If you are looking for a place of serenity with a water view & beautiful foliage this is it !!
Thank you Janie & Geoffrey for sharing your property & friendly dogs with us. You have been working very hard for years building & planting to sculpt a "masterpiece of peace". Love & Prayers to you from us.

A little corner of heaven
Our stay at Sapodilla Cottage was just incredible! Our hosts, Janie and Geoffrey, had thought of everything, stocking the cottage with everything you might need, from a cooler to fold out beach seats. We loved living amongst the incredible plants and birds that surround the cottage, and loved our daily check ins from the dogs! The pool area was lovely and accessing the property was easy - it’s in a great position for exploring the Harbour but also close to incredible beaches. We loved Pigeon Point Beach!
Both Janie and Geoffrey were a great help in our mission whilst in Antigua (researching my Antiguan heritage) but also gave us our privacy. We’ll definitely be back and will be recommending to other family members.

Ultimate relaxation
This little cottage although in some ways a little spartan is one of the most relaxing and romantic places we have ever stayed. We spent hours on the porch watching the birds and reading and particularly enjoyed the outdoor shower with a view of the bay. The pool and gazebo are also great. We ate in quite a few times and found the toaster oven surprisingly good at baking foil parcels of chicken! For shopping the large supermarket at Jolly Beach was good and locally we found the best and most reasonable selection at the Crab Hole Liquors on the right on the way in to Falmouth.
For the more active part of the holiday we joined the Antigua Yacht Club for the week (USD85 for a couple) and took some lessons (USD20) allowing us free use of dinghies once we had been vetted by the very friendly instructors. Janie was a great host. Efficient and friendly. Highly recommended.

Magical
Our stay at this beautiful little cottage was magical. It is positioned in a gorgeous, mature garden so you’re surrounded by nature. All different kinds of birds join you for daytime meals including the beautiful humming birds. We can see Falmouth harbour from the cottage’s private deck and from the pool area which again is a wonderful place to sit any time of the day. The cottage is small but has everything you need including little deck chairs for the beach and a cool box for picnics. I would recommend hiring a car as the cottage is a fair way from the shops and harbour even though we consider ourselves to be fit. We walked to the local beach one day which was completely empty and very lovely. I would recommend you do this during your stay. Janie, the owner is very helpful and is on site should you need anything - she got us tickets to the cricket which took place during our stay. The local bus service is good but sometimes travel above the speed limit (if indeed there is one!). Taxis are good too. Pigeon beach is about a ten minute drive and is lovely. Bumpkins is a great reasonably priced beach bar there. Shirley Heights is great to visit on Thursday nights when a reggae band plays while the sun sets. This also happens on a Sunday but Thursday is less crowded. Antigua is stunning and Janie’s cottage made our holiday in this beautiful part of the world, one to remember forever. Thank you Janie!

Lovely, quiet stay minutes from English Harbor
My husband and I spent 9 days at Sapodilla cottage and had a wonderful time. The cottage is small, but is wonderfully appointed. Janie was a great host and left us a number of items for our arrival including breakfast items, water, fresh fruit and even rum! The ceiling fan kept the cottage cool at night and the mosquito net around the bed worked well. It was great having a quiet place to stay that was only a couple minute drive to the bars and restaurants in English harbor. We rented a small car and didn’t have any issues getting around the island (though there were some pretty bad potholes we encountered on our trips to the west coast of the island). We would gladly stay with Janie again! Thank you!

Simply Peaceful and Lovely
My wife and I stayed here from December 22, 2018 to January 2, 2019. We couldn't have picked a better way to unwind from 2018 and start 2019 off with such peace and tranquility. While I'll get to the cottage review in a minute, I first want to say that Janie and Jefferey are amazing hosts. Any question or request we had was answered or addressed promptly. They were even kind enough to let us join them under the gazebo by the pool for Hors d’oeuvres, champagne and cocktails on Christmas Eve. Simply a gracious and wonderful couple. The cottage is amazing. The outdoor shower was private and wonderful. I think our favorite part of the cottage was the mozzie covered bed and the porch. We sat on that porch everyday for a couple of hours either having breakfast or evening cocktails, and just watch the finches and humming birds fly around. The cottage is surrounded by lush tropical plants with many vibrant flowers, it is very private and secluded, yet, your only a few steps up to the pool and gazebo, which has an amazing view of the harbor. The kitchen is well stocked with all the utensils you need to cook a proper meal. We brought a wireless speaker so we could play music from our phones, but other than that, the lack of TV was absolutely wonderful. We rented a Jeep and getting around the island is pretty easy. The Antiguan people are incredibly friendly and helpful. This was the first time that I didn't feel nervous at all with leaving our things on the beach while we went swimming or snorkeling. English Harbor is very close and small, so you will run into the same locals quite a bit, which was cool because they were always friendly interactions. The lobster pizza at Paparazzi Pizzeria was delicious. You can't go wrong with having cocktails and talking to the bartender at Skullduggery's cafe as well. At Fryes Beach, there is a restaurant/bar with one of the best views around, just gorgeous, and the drinks are great too. Overall, our favorite day was spent at Rendezvous Beach, because we literally had the whole beach to ourselves, and there are no buildings or homes around, completely private. Be forewarned though, the trail to get there is overgrown, steep and rocky. Still waiting on the estimate from the rental car place about the dented bumper, but no matter the cost, it was worth it. You can't go wrong with a stay at the Springhill Sapodilla cottage! Loved the privacy, setting, community and Janie and Jeffrey! Would easily go back!

we come from saint martin and decided with my husband to spend a week in Antigua to rest and enjoy an island that we did not know.
Janie's cottage and Geoffrey is the perfect place! surrounded by vegetation, we took advantage of the calm of the place while watching the birds come to drink or to forage the flowers. The cottage is very cute, we live on the terrace. There is a lot of ballad around and we are 5 minutes drive from english harbour.
The owners are lovely, the pool is beautiful and the perfect place! everything is done for a perfect holiday

Utter Paradise!!!
Our stay at the cottage was just wonderful! We were there for a week for my Birthday and just fell in love!! Janie and Geoffrey are great hosts, everything was even better than expected. We were welcomed with all the essentials and more in the stocked kitchen, it was so thoughtful and sweet. We felt safer knowing they were nearby if needed, however we really didn't need anything, but her tips on activities and some directions on how to get to hike locations and rendezvous bay were so helpful! We rented a convertible jeep from Titi car rental which Janie suggested, it was nearby and they picked us up and dropped us off at the airport and when we got a flat they came and fixed it right away. I highly recommend them as well! The cottage is nestled in the side of a hill, so much privacy in the cottage, it is not near anyone and we only saw the owners at the pool a couple times and it was when we wanted to ask them ideas of places to go, the cottage has a private gated driveway, amazing pool and views, sleep to the sounds of tree frogs and have the doors wide open! We didn't lock the doors or even close them the entire time ( I was a little hesiatant) but all was safe. There is also a second cottage on the property, so we are thinking of coming with friends next time. If you are thinking of a hotel alternative this is it. A total bargain for the price and yes there are nice hotels but this was much more peaceful and romantic!!! Just book it :)

Romantic cottage in secret garden
We have just stayed for 10 nights in this cute cottage set hidden away in the owners huge and stunning gardens. Janie has created an amazing space with pathways winding up through trees and flowers from the cottage to a stunning pool area. The cottage is small but perfectly formed for two people with everything you need. It is hard to drag yourself away each morning from the birds and lizards who visit you every day on the lovely veranda. The pool is beautifully laid out with stunning views across the harbour, once again very private. Janie and Geoff are a lovely couple who will happily help with anything you ask. Should we be lucky enough to visit Antigua again we would look forward to coming back to this slice of Paradise. Thank you Janie and Geoff for sharing with us xx
