About this house rental
Centrally located on Mount Desert Island is "Tall Pines" Retreat on Ripple Pond. Tucked away, down a private drive on Pretty Pond in Historic Somesville on a 3 1/2 acre wooded and grass lot, is our spacious 1,200 square foot downstairs 1-bedroom suite with a full kitchen and living area, full size washer/dryer with 2 private entrances, and large deck; facing over 1/2 mile of uninhabited woods and wildlife wetland that used to be part of Acadia National Park. It is very, very private and you won`t see a soul from your front deck or windows. Your suite features a large stone fireplace with a wood stove and leather sofa, wood beamed ceilings, and a 280 square foot country kitchen. It also has a separate TV area with a comfy sectional sofa and an extra large flat screen TV.
Relax on the spacious 28 ft. deck with a stunning, unobstructed view of Ripple Pond with rolling wooded hills and multiple wildlife including bald eagles, deer, egrets, falcons, hawks, ducks, beaver, frogs, loons, wild turkeys, geese, and even the occasional sea otter. BBQ on the deck and enjoy indoors or out on one of our 2 large dining tables; or, head out to one of the many eateries on the island and enjoy some fresh Maine lobster, crab, or fresh fish! Sit by the fire pit after a long day of hiking Acadia National Park; which offers over 100 miles of nature trails with breathtaking views, or after touring one of the many quaint towns on Mount Desert Island.
Our location is just 10 minutes to Southwest Harbor and 15 minutes to Bar Harbor, the popular tourist destination on the edge of the sea with many quaint shops and restaurants to explore. Smell the crisp, clean sea air of the Atlantic Ocean at Sea Wall with a picnic lunch about 20 minutes away. Visit one of the Local Craft Fairs or Farmers Markets in multiple places on the island. It's only a short 9-minute walk to Long Pond where you can swim, stand up paddle, or rent a kayak or canoe and paddle to Rum Island. Also within walking distance is Somes-Meynell Wildlife Sanctuary on Somes Pond where you can drop in your kayak or take a mile-long nature hike. On a warm day, you can take a swim at nearby Echo Lake only 5 minutes away. Enjoy the Town Dock on the Atlantic Ocean in Somesville just a few minutes away. Also past the Pond`s End dock at Long Pond is Pretty Marsh Picnic area along the ocean's edge about 2 miles away. You could also take in a play at the Acadia Repertory Theatre or sit alongside Somes Sound by the Historic Somesville Bridge and Library where the resident Bald Eagle resides and watch various types of boats go by.
And of course, ACADIA NATIONAL PARK is all around you including over 120 miles of hiking, biking, cross country, and snowshoe trails with lakes and the ocean for swimming, fishing, and boating. Another great attraction is the carriage roads all around Acadia National Park... only 10 minutes away.

Conveniently located near many Acadia attractions, this place was a nice respite from the crowds and congestion in Bar Harbor as well as the park. The location is clean, well maintained and picturesque. The host responds in a timely fashion and is easy to do business with. I would recommend this to a friend and would stay here again if the opportunity presented itself.

We had a lovely stay at Tall Pines. The views over the pond and woodlands are spectacular, and the proximity to all of MDI is unparalleled. We enjoyed hiking, biking, and kayaking.
The kitchen is particularly well-stocked with pots and pans and such, which was nice for some light cooking we did a few nights (scallops from Parsons:).
The suite is in a quiet secluded area but it is under the main residence of the owner. We are light sleepers at the end of our sleep cycle and were woken up most days by either the owner, plumbing noises, or a dog gently walking around between 5-530 a.m. (we never heard anybody at any other time).
We also would have enjoyed a larger bed (it is a double) given how large the room is.
Still, we highly recommend Tall Pines for the helpful owner, lovely spot, and super-convenient location.

Tall pines was an absolute pleasure to stay at. Greg the host was a gracious host and gave helpful suggestions of hikes and places to eat on the island. Tall pines was so cozy and relaxing we chose to eat breakfast and dinner there every night. Afterwards we had a fire in the backyard listening to the frogs, owls and watching the lighting bugs. Its location is in the middle of everything you would want to do in Acadia national park but less crowded. I highly recommend.

This property was beautiful and perfect for our stay visiting Acadia National Park! An easy drive to the park and to Bar Harbor. There was plenty of room to spread out and to cook dinners. We enjoyed the tranquility in the mornings and the stargazing at night!

This awesome place is just as advertised. Outstanding view out your windows every morning! And it is located in a very quiet area, but still close enough to access the amazing Acadia Nationals Park. Highly recommend! And the host is very, very nice and super accommodating… although you rarely ever hear or see him. 🍁❤️

We really enjoyed this property and the area. Greg was a great host; available, responsive and excellent recommendations for activities and restaurants! The setting is very peaceful and serene and the location is very convenient to all things in and around Acadia. And as we learned when a rough storm came through on our last night, equipped with a backup generator! Highly recommend, we'll definitely return next time we are in the area.

Just fell in love with this place from its charming, comfortable interior to its perfect deck and porch for enjoying the outdoors. Location is on the quiet side of Acadia National park which we loved. Greg is the perfect host with a wealth of information about the area. Would definitely stay here again if in the area.

We had a great stay at Tall Pines. Greg was very accommodating and friendly. We had to reschedule/postpone our visit due to a family emergency and we had no issues doing that, which was such a relief. We loved the peace and quiet at the property and it was still an easy drive (~20 minutes) to most attractions. The kitchen had everything we needed, the bed was comfortable, and the back deck was wonderful! Definitely recommend!

The home was situated in a great area of Acadia, close to bar harbor and to Southwest harbor. The home was clean, had everything we needed, and was situated on a beautiful pond. Greg was available if we needed him and very kind. We look forward to visiting again in the future!

Tall Pine Retreat is a beautiful relaxing getaway to Maine!
Greg is a wonderful host. He was helpful in directing us to many different places we wouldn’t have visited.
The accommodations were excellent!
Personal touches all around made you feel at home. Deck outside was perfect for morning coffee and just relaxing after a long day of sightseeing.
If travels ever bring us back to Maine this would be high on our list to stay.

We had a lovely, relaxing stay at Tall Pines. The property was beautiful and peaceful, lots of birds and marsh activity to watch from the deck. A serene spot to rest between Acadia adventures.

Although the weather wasn't perfect, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Tall Pines. Other than the shower being a little too small, the apartment was perfect and extremely comfortable. The setting was beautiful. Great spot for birders. The owner couldn't have been any nicer to us.

If you are looking for a quiet place to relax this is it! The accommodations are very comfortable, the bed is great, the kitchen is well equipped, and the porch/backyard are wonderful for soaking in the sounds and fresh air of Maine. We so enjoyed looking out over the little pond every morning and watching the three different families of ducks and the turtles. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with lots of comfortable seating. You can even enjoy eating outside in the rain under the covered porch. The house has extras like plenty of toilet paper, paper towels, detergent etc. and there is a table with brochures and maps of the area, which is a nice touch. There is a very large screen tv and plenty of interesting books for rainy days. The owner is attentive if you have concerns, but gives you your privacy. The location is good for seeing sites on both sides of the island. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would love to rent it again.

Greg was a courteous and thoughtful host and the property was more beautiful than photos could show. Greg gave us some great suggestions for hikes that were less busy than most of the park. The grounds were absolutely gorgeous, peaceful and relaxing. Our favorite parts were starting the day with coffee on the deck and cocktails in the evening watching the pond and it's inhabitants. We would rebook in a heartbeat!

Greg, was very welcoming. Everything was clean and I felt at home. Very peaceful which was what I was looking for. Also the closeness to Acadia is most important to me. I hope to come back in a year or 2.

Great property with an amazing view with the noises of nature!
Excellent location for visiting Acadia and Bar Harbor. Greg even suggested a close by hike that we hadn’t considered and I’m so glad he did! Amazing sunset views.

Make this easy, don't look any longer. Book Tall Pines. If you are looking for quite, peaceful, restful and private, Tall Pines is for you. The setting is so beautiful that you don't need to leave but don't miss Acadia. Greg is very nice man, but he goes out of his way to give you privacy while you are there. Kitchen is set up for cooking, it has everything you need to make meals. Fire pit out side is an plus. The apt is very nice and comfortable. Large so you can spread out. Greg, thank you for making this VRBO so nice. It was greatly appreciated and we will be back. Tom and Catherine

This was one of the best places we’ve stayed in and I’m particular! The location was on the quiet side away from busy Bar Harbor yet central enough that it did not take long to get anywhere. We like Bass Harbor light and Seawall so this was ideal. The place was lovely and the manager very friendly and easy to work with. Highly recommend! J and S from Kansas City

Tall Pines is a beautiful property, perfect for a couple who wants to get away from the busyness of life but close to a lot of activities in Bar Harbor. The host Greg was available but gave us plenty of privacy. Highly recommend.

Tall Pines Retreat is a wonderful property with a peaceful setting. The location provides easy access to Southeast Harbor, Northwest Harbor, Bar Harbor, and all the attractions that the Park has to offer. Greg was very friendly and knowledgable. Karen and I realized in the early days of our vacation that, on Mount Desert Island, wherever you are you're not that far...

Greg's property provided a most pleasant and relaxing stay in a beautiful setting. We really enjoyed the outdoor space which there are accommodations for all weather types, as part of it is under cover. The space is very nice and cozy, yet spacious. We felt like we could have stayed there for a long time. Greg is a wonderfully nice man, very pleasant, very accommodating. We would gladly return for another visit. We were visiting Southwest Harbor as well as Bar Harbor and the distance to both was convenient. The setting with the pond and wildlife was excellent. We love natural spaces and this fit the bill.

Talk Pines is the best rental property in which we have ever stayed in Mt. Desert Island. Ideally located on the “quiet side”, it resides in its own preserved marshland. We found ourselves truly resting and not frequenting as many restaurants as we used to. Instead, we cooked and enjoyed our million dollar view. This vacation gave us the recharge we needed. The rental is immaculate and well furnished. It felt like a home and we enjoyed his beautiful furnishings. The owner, Greg, is on property and is attentive, yet he honors privacy. We can’t say enough about this rental and we already booked for next year. I almost hesitate to review because I don’t want word to get out, but that would be doing him a disservice. This is for a quiet couple who appreciate the finer things. If you need true respite, this is your place.

Very nice stay in a spacious apartment in a lovely location, but the owner could improve his scheduling and communication skills. Upon arrival, I was a bit shocked when the owner told us we were a day early. I quickly proved this was not the case by showing our printout of the confirmation. I was then told we were "lucky" the previous renters decided to leave a day early! I am not sure what's going on here, but sounds like the owner needs to synch his calendars! However, we had a nice stay and enjoyed our proximity to Acadia National Park.

A Magical Maine getaway
Delightful property — Greg is a terrific owner. Lovely pond in the backyard where we saw a mother Mallard & her chicks, counted 14 bull frogs, saw a red fox, hawks, turtles and deer. The grounds were serene & beautifully landscaped. The house is very roomy with a well appointed kitchen. Good Bed and Big flat screen TV. PERFECT for a couple. Very close to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. After a busy day of hiking and exploring it was great to come back to Tall Timbers and RELAX on the covered deck & watch the wildlife. A true Home away from Home. Thanks Greg! We will return.

Beautiful Maine Retreat
We enjoyed a quiet private stay at Tall Pines. The house is neat and clean and comfortable. The decks look over a beautiful serene landscape. The gardens are filled with native plants and birds and occasional fox , beaver and chipmunks. We identified over 50 species of birds on this private property. Superb treasure. Greg is a wonderful host. We truly enjoyed our 2 weeks in this nature paradise. Thank you Greg!

Property was beautiful, clean, and well furnished. Having a resident fox visit us every day was a plus!

Peaceful location that was still convenient to Bar Harbor
The location afforded us the opportunity to sit outside and watch the wildlife and enjoy the cool but sunny weather. One night a bald eagle flew right by us over the marsh. The location was 15 minute drive to Acadia main entrance and Bar Harbor restaurants. It was very spacious with a nice sized kitchen. I recommend this VRBO to everyone.

Would happily return.
My wife and I stayed here at the end of the season in October. (Right at the end, many places had already closed for the season.)
Greg was a fantastic host and provided several suggestions for hikes we wouldn't have done without his advice.
The property was comfortable and exceeded our expectations. Would happily return for another visit, perhaps when it's a bit warmer.

Lovely location for east or west side Mt Desert Island activities
Nice and up to date accommodations in the lower level of the hosts private home. Beautiful view with private entrance and deck. Only wish the wifi had better connection as the router is shared and in the main part of the house. Enjoyable stay!

Perfect location for exploring Acadia
This is a beautiful property with large rooms and everything you would need in the kitchen. Washer/Dryer was a nice bonus after a very rainy day hiking on Cadillac Mtn! Very quiet and relaxing after the hustle/bustle of Bar Harbor.

Idyllic location!
What a perfect place to be near Bar Harbor, but away from the streets and crowds! This is a beautiful, peaceful place, with all the amenities of home! It is the lower level of the owner's home, but we never heard them at all! They make sure you have a private stay, so the grounds behind the unit are for guests alone. The kitchen is roomy, and is fully stocked with all the dishes and nice appliances, including a washer/dryer right off the kitchen! The living room and bedroom are wonderfully decorated for a mountain retreat, and so comfortable! Our favorite part was the gorgeous view, so grateful for all of the windows overlooking the pond and grounds! I am really missing my mornings on the deck, watching the day begin! Such a beautiful, peaceful place to relax after a day hiking too! The covered deck came in handy the day it rained. We could still enjoy nature and stay dry! We loved Tall Pines retreat and hope we can return soon! Thank you Greg for taking such great care of your place!

Right Location - Right Property
This is the second time we've stayed here. It's out of the MDI traffic, but close to all the attractions. We had a rainy day, and the spacious, comfortable property let us enjoy our rainy day activities. The generous covered porch let us be outside without getting wet.
