About this cottage rental
This is a charming, light filled historic cottage on the "Gut" in South Bristol. Minutes from the summer community of Christmas Cove.
The Sumner McFarland House is three stories and boasts porches on two floors. The large eat-in galley kitchen has multiple picture window views of the harbor. There are 3 bedrooms on the second floor and a larger bedroom on the third floor. There are bathrooms on each floor. There is a private driveway and parking next to the house. The true front of the house faces the water, and slopes to a large dock with a picnic table, a ramp, and float to tie up your boat, or to launch your kayaks and paddle boards.
Our second floor has four small rooms:
1st bedroom with full size bed and views of the trees
Bathroom with clawfoot tub and shower
2nd bedroom with full size bed and views of the harbor
3rd bedroom with a pair of twin beds and views of the harbor and river
There is also a sun deck to sit and enjoy your morning coffee or your afternoon book and wine.
On the third floor, there is a bedroom suite with a queen-sized bed, kitchenette, half+ bathroom, and a reading nook to sit and view the water.
The living room is bright with picture window views of the water. There is also a second living space for watching TV (or the water if you prefer). The covered porch is the perfect place to escape and relax and enjoy the salty breezes.
Live or cooked lobsters are walking distance away at the Fishermen's Co-op. You can also walk to Osier's for fresh off the boat fish or a quick lunch. Ask for the Fisherman’s catch. During the summer season you may pick up fresh baked goods at Kneaded Provisions.
The public boat launch is next to the Co-op, and you have a choice of Bittersweet Landing Boatyard or Gamage Shipyard for your boating needs.
Kayak and paddle board rentals are available and can be delivered by Mitch at Midcoast Kayak.
Watch the boats, the gulls, the seals, the morning mist rising off the water. Paddle or motor to the neighboring islands and ocean.
Washer and dryer are on the first floor.

Our family loved our stay! The home is close to everything and well appointed with a fabulous kitchen and water views from most of rooms. The back porch was our favorite place to hang out and enjoy the stunning views of the harbor. We will be back!

We had a wonderful vacation and were fortunate to stay at this property, and I would not hesitate to go back to the same spot. Natalie is a wonderful host and made the entire process very simple from start to finish with clear instructions and recommendations for our stay. The house is charming and tastefully furnished in a quiet area right on the water which is very relaxing and away from the busier touristy parts. It is far enough away to be nice and quiet but not so far away that you can't get to things easily. In fact, there was tons to do all within 15-20 minutes (or further if you want to venture more). The scenery can't be beat, the freshest lobster is literally a 2 minute walk away and even the neighbors were outgoing, friendly and inviting. Truly an A+ experience - if you have the opportunity to stay here, book it! You won't be disappointed.

We traveled from VT to Bristol for a family wedding. The house perfectly accommodated three adult couples. The location was very calming. I only wish we had a few more days to spend there relaxing.

This home was my grandparents when our cousins and I were growing up! We decided to start getting together more often and came up with the idea to have a cousins weekend and discovered the owners rented it out! It’s a beautiful house all though it has changed a bit and has been renovated still brought back some wonderful memories. The view is fabulous and we all stated how we used to take it for granted. This time of year (may) is quite and we walked around the island and enjoyed the weather and views! You won’t go wrong with a stay in this home!

Natalie was super sweet and promote to answer any questions. The home has wonderful views and is fully equipped with everything you would need to cook, enjoy and relax. We had 2 children who loved the yard and the hiking trails that were all close by.

This is our 2nd year staying in MacFarland House and I am sure it is our new tradition. We are a group of 6 friends who have been getting together every year in the fall for over 35 years. We love this house and our host, Natalie. Every detail is wonderful and Natalie is so responsive. We already are booked for next year.

This home was perfect for our family to relax and get a taste of amazing fresh lobster! It was so awesome to see the boats head out in the morning and have the tranquility of a small coastal town. The nearby pemaquid lighthouse and fort was a great stop. The house had everything needed to make us feel right at home!

We enjoyed our stay in South Bristol. All the windows gave us great views from every room. The front porch overlooking the water was our favorite place to sit and relax with family and friends. The house was well cared for and fully-equipped for a comfortable stay. We appreciated Natalie's attention to all our needs.

Our second summer staying in Natalie’s cottage, and we’ve booked for next summer. The house is exactly as described….wonderful harbor view, marvelous porch, private dock, large kitchen overlooking the harbor, excellent kitchen equipment….and just a short walk to the lobster coop! We think it’s perfect!

This is the second year our group has stayed at Natalie's. It is a lovely and comfortable home right on the water in a fishing harbor. It is very well equipped and clean - as you see in the photos. We look forward to staying here again.

The home is well suited for those that want to get away from it all but still have Wi-Fi. Very tranquil and beautiful views of the water. One minor issue with the coffee maker but the owner replaced it the next day! Perfect stay to head for the day to Bar Harbor or Booth Bay Harbor. The house was clean.

Wonderful house in a wonderful location. Beautiful, well-stocked kitchen and great
bedrooms. Lovely front porch and nice dock. Would stay here again. South Bristol/The Gut is the perfect place to stay in mud-coast Maine.

This was a really lovely home nestled right on the water with our own dock. We love to kayak, so it was super convenient. And using the picnic table on it and just hanging out on the water was glorious. The house is super clean and comfortable and the kitchen is warm and welcoming, large, really well stocked, and has tons of windows. The owner, Natalie, was very warm and friendly and has great design sense. We would definitely rent again.
Just a couple suggestions: screen doors on front and back doors and shades/blinds in kitchen.
Thanks for a wonderful stay. Wendy
Thank you

We enjoyed our stay at your house very much. Your house lived up to your description and exceeded our expectations.
It provided the perfect place for our group of friends to gather and spend time together. Everything was clean, neat, and in working order. The biggest surprise was when there was a power failure due to a storm-the generator kicked in, so we didn't miss a beat with no power! all the other 5-star ratings are right on. we are looking forward to our stay next year!

Great place for 5 friends to spend quiet weekend. Very clean; spacious kitchen with all appliances we needed. Comfortable furnishings. Water views from most rooms. Though early winter we enjoyed sitting on the porch. Natalie responded quickly to messages and very accommodating. We would definitely stay here again!

Artistically decorated and homey older home sits above a beautiful working harbor in small coastal maine community. Amazing views from kitchen /dining area as well as front porch and upper decks. We ate in most evenings and found the kitchen extremely well stocked and a lovely place to prepare and share meals and the porch a perfect place for morning coffee and birdwatching in morning and cocktails at night. Beds were comfortable and even though the home is older it has many nice updates while maintaining a lot of character. Location is good for day trips to Damariscotta, Wiscassete, Maine Botanical Gardens, Rockland ( Farnsworth and many nice art galleries) , Camden, many coastal lighthouses etc. There are plenty of hiking opportunities not far as well. Natalie was great communicator and home was very clean. There are lots of stairs but not hard to navigate. We really loved this home and would absolutely stay again.

We had an absolutely amazing week in this Real Historical 1918 Coastal Maine home! Loved the Real working inlet and mostly just locals from South Bristol. Osier’s Wharf was amazing for fresh cooked lobster or lobster rolls right off of the boat from the back of the building. I can not overstate how nice & relaxing this was or how nice all of the locals were. The Penalty Box was great place to eat & HANNAFORD’s is a real nice grocery store for all of your needs located in Damariscotta - a nice pretty 15 minute drive from the home.
I can foresee us coming back again and again. LOVED IT!
Natalie was very quick to respond to any questions.

Perfect Maine harbor view
My husband and brother and I spent three perfect weeks in Natalie’s house on the gut at South Bristol. The harbor is a quintessential working lobstering anchorage (and amazingly quiet …never awakened by boats leaving at dawn!). Natalie is a wonderful host! Don’t miss the lobster co-op just up the road for the sweetest and tenderest lobsters we’ve had on the coast of Maine. Also put The Hub on your list for sweet salty oysters and Broad Arrow Farm for very special meat and an aperitif at their Rooting Pig outside bistro. Cheers and enjoy!

Beautiful views; perfect for boaters and kayakers.
The large porch, the kitchen and the dining area all offer wonderful harbor views all day long. The deck and dock are spacious and make boating and kayaking so easy. We love the area -- quiet and not at all touristy. Our family had a lovely time at Natalie's.

Wonderful and Relaxing Vacation
We have been renting with VRBO for many years and this by far was our best experience. Host was accessible and courteous, and sent us ideas of places to visit while in the area. House was clean and comfortable, and we felt very welcome from the start. The cove was magical; I felt like a kid again listening to the lobster boats going in and out each morning. The bathrooms were clean and linens smelled great!
Kitchen has everything that you need, and well stocked with items that you may have forgotten like pancake mix! Being able to use what was there and then give back to the pantry when we left made us feel even more at home.
We hope to return next year!

Charming home with perfect South Bristol location
Lovely home with endlessly entertaining view of the working harbor! Terrific location for multiple day trips along coastal Maine & minutes away from Pemaquid Light Point which offers the most beautiful sweeping views of the Bay. Natalie was super easy to work with and has created a little slice of heaven in South Bristol. We are already planning our return!

Wow! Lovely spot
Well, you know you’ve had a good vacation when no one wants to leave!! We had a family gathering of 6 of us staying in the home, and a few day guests come by who were staying nearby inMaine. Everyone loved the house, especially the porch. We rented kayaks and Stand Up paddle boards for a week. So easy and fun to just walk out to deck and paddle on. The South Bristol Lobster Co-Op is just down the street and we went almost every day. Thank you, Natalie, for a wonderful vacation.

Enjoy the charms of South Bristol and Rutherford Island
This is a perfect place to sit on the back porch and watch the working harbor. Put a kayak in off the dock, and paddle over to Witch Island, where we saw two eagles. South Bristol and Osier's have lobster fare. The bakery "kneaded provisions" has croissants, coffee, and a nice selection of wine. There's a small, charming beach just up the road in Rutherford, past Christmas Cove at the end of Route 129. Really, what reason is there to go anywhere else?

Very nice experience. Beautiful old house with gorgeous location
At first we were a little surprised at age of house, but after awhile we really kind of fell in love with it. It is a work in progress but has good bones and is well maintained. We were hypnotized by the boats coming in and out of the "gut" and the surrounding area is spectacular. We thoroughly enjoyed it.
