We recommend Gozan and would stay again!
Gozan is a unique, comfortable, welcoming property in the best location, transportation everywhere, short walk to Gion, tons of restaurants, the market, scenic river & river walk. The property is spotless. The beds are comfortable. We chose the best place to stay while on our extended trip to Kyoto. The lobby included free water, coffee, tea. We felt at home at Gozan. All front desk employees are very good and accommodating. However, we must give special recognition to ‘Axe’ at the front desk. Axe was exceptional in his professionalism, friendliness, and excellent proficiency with the English language. He was knowledgeable and always helpful. Axe was enjoyable to interact with and an absolute pleasure to see at the front desk. He is an asset to Gozan, definitely, and we thank him for making our stay even more enjoyable. Because I read negative reviews…Regarding the breakfast in the next door cafe, we used the coupons but paid a little extra for a latte or cappuccino, as the regular included coffee was not the best. Our room had a kitchenette with a good size refrigerator and microwave - so fruit, nuts, seaweed we stock up on anyway when traveling. Gozan was the perfect base for us to comfortably experience Kyoto and beyond. We took buses easily for trips to temples, Miyajima off Hiroshima, Miyama, Uji, Amanohashidate, Ine Bay, biking through Asuka Village (lovely) etc etc. We would stay at Gozan again. Thank you everyone at Gozan, and thank you, Axe.

beautiful room that’s extremely close to a train station, Gion, and Pontocho
- Beautiful room - so so close to Gion and Pontocho, down the street from the train station - friendly staff who spoke English
- a bit strange that you handed over your key when leaving but it was nice not having to keep track of it - advertised 24/7 staffing but once tried to leave around 5am and no one was at the desk. had to wake someone up to let us out.

Enjoyed my stay here with extremely well-located, clean and well-equipped rooms. Nice staff.
Very well located spacious room with washer/dryer and equipped kitchen. I used the wash only cycle and hung things to dry. No problems. The kitchen has a range of plug-in appliances. In the lobby you can always get more water and when the desk is open there is good quality expresso coffee available as needed for those staying at the hotel. Nearby to the hotel is Sanjo Station and across the street from the station are local buses. As a tourist, I enjoyed the buses so I could 'see' the city. There is also a mart to get basic supplies between the station and the hotel. This hotel is central to the Gion District. I spent three separate days east of the Kamo river to see these main things and more - 1. North - Shirakawa River walk, Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art, Ginkakuji (Silver Pavillion) and Philosopher's Walk. 2. East - Jidai Matsuri Festival of the Ages Oct 22 procession passes by this hotel, Higashiyama and Hanamakoji street. This Matsuri together with the Blue Note Tokyo and Osaka Aquarium were the three best things I did over a 29 day trip to Japan. Try to get to this Matsuri which is more rewarding in person than the excellent YouTube video of it. 3. South - Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka streets, and Yasaka Shrine. I also went on a different day to Fushimi Inari Shrine which is south of Gion and only an 8 minute train ride from Kyoto Station. Across the Kamo River is a Starbucks and the Pontocho alley full of restaurants. Venture a little bit further to the Nashiki Market. Fabulous location this hotel. If you are changing accommodation from Kyoto to Osaka or vice versa, I recommend the Rapid Limited Express Kyo-garaku train from Kyoto-kawaramachi Station to Umeda-Osaka station running weekends and public holidays at the standard fare. Will attach two photos of the train and yes there are gardens in two of the carriages.
I wrote the things below so that people would be aware. I don't think any of them are more than slightly inconvenient. - It is hotel policy to leave your keys at the desk while you are out. On my first day, I headed out to Amanohashidate and Ine Bay at 6.30am kind of dropping my keys under the counter. It might be a good idea to have a secure box to leave keys for when the desk is not yet open. - There is very limited food-prep counter space in the kitchen although all the appliances you would likely need are there. - I stayed here for seven nights and my room faced the street on a high floor. There was a lot of truck traffic one only morning that woke me. Ambulances also use this street and you are lucky if your only involvement is to wake for a minute and identify an ambulance is passing by.

It was a good central location for us to explore the historical areas of Kyoto. It was a reasonable price and the staff
Good location
Although we had everything we needed it was tight quarters as is typical for Japanese hotels.
