About this house rental
This house was designed by Dr Mark Dewsbury, Centre for Sustainable Architecture, University of Tasmania. Mark has designed a house that, on the edge of a World Heritage National Park, aims to capture Tasmania's alpine heartland.
The house is a highly efficient solar passive design, capturing the warmth from the sun and releasing it at night. There is also an air-based heat pump that heats the concrete slab of the house. Insulation is extensive with double glazing throughout.
The 100 acres that the house is on was clear-felled 30 years before purchase and now, 50 years on, the forest is thriving. The house footprint is just 86 square metres yet while compact the design feels spacious.
Cradle Cave features
The house design was inspired by the curved seed pods of native hakea plants. High expansive windows provide extensive views of alpine vegetation creating a sense of being part of the incredible Tasmania mountain high country. While sitting in the warmth of the house you can look out at snow-covered trees, feeling cocooned and protected from the elements.
Various native animals can be spotted day and night with an extensive array of birds, the occasional wombat, possums, paddy melons and wallabies. This is an ideal location for a romantic weekend, family gathering or simply time-out from a busy lifestyle.
'When the sun is shining it's glorious, but even when it's grey, and you're sitting in the warmth with a good glass of red, and looking out at the floor to ceiling nature, it's pretty idyllic',
We have excellent mobile coverage in the house for Telstra only.

If you are after a quiet stay in a good location near Cradle Mountain this is perfect. A few DVDs would be good as TV reception was patchy and we struggled with internet connection. The kids really wanted to relax and zone out after a big day of walking. But otherwise lovely.

We enjoyed the peace and privacy of Cradle Cave. A wonderful place to get away and rest and relax and unplug for a few days. The place was just as described, warm and had everything we needed. The walk down to the creek was lovely too. Thank you for sharing your home with us, Gail and Alan.

Wonderful bush location. Very well appointed with all mod cons and comforts. A little bit different and quite special

Pros: The property was lovely and the home unique. It was comfortable for 4 adults. Very close to cradle mountain park entrance (10 minute drive).
Cons:The listing had checked WiFi and a hot tub as amenities but WiFi was only available as a hot spot and our cell phones (T mobile) did not have service there. It was nice to put down the phone but left us without maps of the remote area. We had service when we drove to the visitor center at Cradle Mountain. Would have appreciated paper maps.

only thing missing was an insect screen on the front door.

This is a really gorgeous house, with amazing big windows overlooking forest. The location is incredibly tranquil and is ideal for exploring nearby Cradle Mountain NP. Its design (much like a cave) ensures you will be very toasty inside the house even when its chilly outside. The house itself is on the smaller side with a very compact kitchen, but has been built on a pre-existing clearing as to negate the need to clear more trees, so this is understandable. We managed fine as a family of four adults for two nights. If you're looking for somewhere to stay in this area, Cradle Cave is a great option.

The best thing about the location was the stars and the little Paddy melon visiting in the morning. Unfortunately the interior and furnishings of the house was quite lifeless. Not a cosey homely feel at all. Definitely not for more than 4 people as it's very small. The house itself does actually keep warmth in, but so much so we had to either sit outside or go for a drive as it was to hot and stuffy. Unfortunately with no screens on doors and few windows to open it wasn't pleasant and probably nicer in colder weather. It was beautiful to be literally in the bush and listen to the Wonderful sounds

Loved being secluded and surrounded by trees. So clean, warm and comfortable with everything we needed to self-cater. A fantastic base for exploring Cradle Mountain, which we fell in love with!

Great property. Loved the under floor heating! Beds were comfortable. Would of been nice to of had a few cupboard staples but otherwise a great place to
relax after a day hiking! Highly recommend getting groceries before you get to Cradle Mountain area as there is very limited supplies. We know for next time!
Overall we enjoyed our stay!

Could not have been better. Very nice & helpful hosts. Easy to get to Cradle Mountain yet far enough away & so private to feel a million miles away after a big day of walking. Includes nightly wildlife one being a very cheeky possum. Loved this place.

This property is a real hidden gem nestled in a beautiful bush land setting. With its close proximity to Cradle Mountain it’s an ideal location to explore the whole area. Even if you just stayed in you’d be surrounded by nature and in the evenings entertained by the local Padmelons grazing on the grass outside your windows.

We spent four perfect days at Cradle cave. The setting was secluded but very close to the national park. We enjoyed the walks on the property, especially the enchanted forest along the creek. The house had everything we could need to cook our own meals for three nights. We had a great dinner on the fourth night at Lemonthyme lodge in Moina. We will definitely be back in winter to take advantage of the heating.

Loved the home, the serenity and the private trail through the forest. Easy drive to Cradle Mountain. We stocked up on food before we left and enjoyed cooking our own meals (nothing close by in terms of shops and restaurants but this wasn’t a problem as the house was so pleasant to be in)

The photos do not do it justice, this property is beautiful and we loved our stay. Wish we could have stayed longer!
The kitchen and bathrooms were well appointed with everything you could need and everything was clean and comfortable.
We had a little bit of reception with Telstra but we wouldn't have minded if we didn't — it was nice sitting outside listening to the birds, watching the Pademelons or stargazing.
Thank you Alan and Gail!

A modern designer house 15 minutes from Cradle Mountain visit centre. It is also near the Peppers Cradle Moutain Lodge where one can find 3 restaurants. Alan was helpful and gave us tips of what to bring and where to find wombats. A gem place, will fully recommend.

Wonderful to stay in a house that has had so much of a sustainability effort applied. A great use of natural energy and has everything you need without being wasteful. Beautiful spot in amongst the bush. Fabulous stars at night!

Stunning, peaceful and private surroundings. Well appointed kitchen, bedroom and bathrooms.
We found the lack of Wi-Fi (and cell service) a nice change to switch off and relax. Would have liked a few more board-game options/books.
A stay here will need some minor preparation for food supplies as there is no supermarket close by, but that is all well communicated by the hosts before hand.
Perfect location to base yourself in Cradle Mountain for hikes etc.

We had a lovely time. the property is nestled in a bush clearing that is a sun-trap when it decides to come out!
The only downside was no wireless internet, which I had expected, due to being on the property description at the time of booking. We were pleasantly surprised that on our return from our day's walking to find fresh towels had been delivered and some cleaning had been done. So glad we had left the house in a tidy state!
We would be happy to recommend this property and would stay their again.

Thank you for sharing your lovely home. We were very comfortable and had everything we needed. Very peaceful. Loved the large windows that framed the surrounding trees so beautifully. Convenient to gorgeous Cradle Mountain. Thank you.

We had an amazing, relaxing time out in the bush close to Cradle Mountain for Christmas. We saw pademelons and echidnas right by the house too.

This property has everything you could want. It's a short drive to the Cradle Mountain visitor centre for access to many walks. The house is comfortably heated through the floor, the facilities in the kitchen and laundry were very useful, and the beds were comfortable. The floor to ceiling windows had a stunning bishland vista and a pademelon visited a couple of times, as well as some birds. A perfect luxury cottage in serene surroundings. Just be aware there is no wifi, so if you are with Optus you will need to drive to get reception, which is a little inconvenient when trying to check mountain conditions or other local facilities. However, it also makes it a nice quiet retreat.

This place is in a great spot, so close to Cradle. It's in a quiet spot surrounded by bush with lots of birds and the odd wallaby or Wombat come to graze just in front of the house.
The house itself is really good, warm, clean and well appointed. Really enjoyed our stay. :-)

Secluded, comfortable hideaway very close to Cradle Mt. National Park ... perfect for those who don't want the crowds

Nice and close to the National Park. The property itself is stunning.
My only note would be- there is no Wifi despite the listing advertising it. The only phone reception available is to Telstra users. I would recommend removing wireless internet from the amenities in your listing as we booked assuming wifi would be available and it wasn't. This was a big inconvenience to us.

Beautiful setting among the trees. We enjoyed the silence, the cosiness, the heated floor… in fact, everything! Also just a short drive to the park.
Highly recommended.

I cant imagine a better base to explore Cradle Mountain. It snowed overnight up on the Mountain, during our stay in December. It was 5 degrees outside the house in the morning. We were a comfortable 17 degrees inside. I dont even think we had the heating on. Truly an amazing house, embedded in its natural environment. Fully equipped kitchen, fluffy towels, comfy beds, amazing views. Bring some food to cook at the house, as there isn't much to buy when you're in Moina. Thank you for a heavenly stay.

Just 10 minutes down the road from Cradle Mountain Visitor centre, this was the perfect location. The house was beautiful, everything we needed to cook meals etc... And the heated floors were just gorgeous. We would stay here again without a question.
