The hotel is centrally located, only a five-minute walk from the town centre and the Globe Tavern, well-known to students of Robert Burns.
The staff were warm and friendly, although thin on the ground - to get a drink at the bar, I had to fetch the receptionist from her post.
The room was clean, and the bed was comfortable. There were robes in the wardrobe but they took up so much space that, in order to hang my clothes, I was obliged to lift out the ironing board and place it at the side of the wardrobe.
The original building has been extended several times, such that the overall building is a bit of a multilevel warren. When I checked in, the receptionist told me my room (57) was on the first floor. I followed the maze of corridors and eventually got up to 55, before descending to a conference suite. It was only as I retraced my steps towards Reception that I saw a sign pointing to the second floor and marked 55-62. This sign was round a corner and out of sight on my first pass.
As mentioned below, the room was clean and comfortable, but the floor was very creaky, and the walls were thin, to the extent that one could hear when next door's bathroom was being used ...
Tea and coffee facilities were provided, but the coffee is in bags, which are impractical, given the small size of the cups.

There was a good choice for breakfast and evening meal. The room was clean & tidy. The bed was extremely comfortable.
It took 5 attempts to choose a bottle of wine from a reasonably extensive wine menu to find a bottle that was in stock.
That was the only problem

My husband & I spent Christmas here (2022) ...what can I say ~ why this hotel is not 4 stars is bewildering.
From stepping into the reception it is immaculately clean EVERYWHERE. Every single staff member is exceptionally friendly, polite, courteous, always smiling and whatever they are asked, nothing is too much trouble for them.
They are a credit to themselves and to the owners of the hotel.
The food is of exceptional quality, beautifully presented, the plates that should be hot were, marvellous variety and every taste catered for.
Our room was superb, the only minor was that the heating could not be turned down as the radiator was behind a fixed unit and we were a little too hot ~ personal preference, NOT a complaint, so we dealt with it as guests should! (we opened the windows!) The complimentary tray was highly maintained and we did not have to ask for more milk as so often happens in other hotels, usually only 2 pots of milk! Beautiful bathroom, spotlessly clean. The room was spacious and very comfortable, again spotlessly clean.
A very very minor gripe, we had 7 out 8 changes of table in the dining room. We along with another 2 couples seemed to be the unlucky guests moved around from the original allocated table. Most guests stayed at the same table. I did talk to the manageress, who said it was because when other guests left, the dining lay out needed to be altered.
Suggestion; as guests leave and others arrive why not place the arriving guests on the departed tables? Most of the guests were couples so it should not be that difficult.
Twice, we had to sit on someone else's allocated table. This has a potential (unnecessary) flash point for unpleasant and challenging behaviour by some people not as understanding as we were whose allocated table was taken by someone else.

The pool and gym were fabulous however the steam room and sauna were not hot.
This was disappointing.
The breakfast was very poor.
It wasn't self service
I had to go up to a counter and ask for what I wanted.
I asked for potatoe scone and got half of a full one. It was the same with the haggis, half a small portion.
It was like being at school.

The hotel is welcoming and in a great location. The staff were friendly. The breakfast over our three-day stay was good with a hot breakfast and other choices and kept fully stocked at all times. The breakfast staff were attentive. On a rainy and wet day, we spent the morning in the swimming pool area and made use of the hot-tub, sauna and steam room. All very enjoyable and relaxing.
Sadly, our room had a problem with the heating for the whole 3 day stay, Firstly, there was no heating facility at all in the bathroom, so during a Scottish winter I can imagine having a shower to be a very quick and get out quick affair. I do not know why there was no heater in the bathroom and when mentioned at reception the young man just said yes, I know.
I had to ring reception 5 times over 3 days for them to be able to control the radiator in our main bedroom (which was a lovely big room by the way). I could not understand why as paying guests we could not control the heating in our room which was lukewarm at best, but I was told by various reception staff that they could give it a 30 mins blast to get the room warm. We did not have the option to turn it up or down to our liking. It also did not help that I had a head cold and therefore, feeling under the weather did feel the cold more at that time. The room never felt cosy.
The room we were in (52) was at the far end of the hotel and we did not hear any other guests coming or going during our stay, so it was a really quiet part of the hotel but because of that it felt that our room and the corridors surrounding the room was on cutbacks with the heating side of things. The staff did apologise each time I rung them but could only offer the boost the heat up for 30 mins. After returning from being out and about in Dumfries the room was cold again and reception had to be contacted again so they could turn it up for us once more. I did fill the hotel questionnaire in and handed it into reception on checking out.
