About this cottage rental
The Duck House is the quintessential rural retreat from which to immerse yourself in the splendour of the Lake District. Perfectly situated in the picturesque village of Braithwaite, you will be ideally placed for exploring the multitude of local attractions, whilst enjoying the quiet countryside idyll in this homely and inviting bungalow.
As you enter there is a spacious hallway, opening up to a large bright triple-aspect living and dining room, complete with a traditional wood-burning stove in the fireplace, and plenty of space to sit and relax after a long day of adventures. The large dining table offers ample room to serve up a feast for all the family, and is easily accessible from the kitchen.
Being in a modern country style with the work surfaces finished in local green slate, the generously sized kitchen is very well-equipped. With full size fridge and freezer, a dishwasher, 5-ring gas hob and full oven, you have everything you need to easily make the family’s favourite cuisine at any time, whilst the breakfast bar complete with stools offers additional seating if needed. There is also a further utility cupboard with washing machine, tumble dryer and airing rack.
On through the kitchen you will find a bright and welcoming sun room, which has double doors opening out onto the patio with views across the garden and onto the hills beyond. Nicely furnished with rattan table and chairs, this makes a perfect space for your morning coffee whilst you make plans for the day.
The bedrooms are all light, airy and spacious with ample storage. The master bedroom has a king size bed, wall-mounted television for that holiday lie-in, and a modern en-suite bathroom with a smart shower enclosure, glass-surround basin, and toilet. The second bedroom has zip-link twin beds - normally made up as one king-size bed, although you can request twin beds if required. The third bedroom has one full size single bed.
The main family bathroom, is fully tiled, and offers a bath complete with mains shower over, basin and toilet.
There is high speed broadband internet connection available.
Outside, there is a very well-proportioned garden, with a sunny aspect, multiple features of interest and stunning views out across the fells. There is a large patio which can be accessed either through double sliding doors from the main living room or from the sun room. There are two sets of wooden table and chairs to seat four and two respectively, offering the opportunity to dine al fresco in the summer months.
A natural stream known as Chaplin’s Beck flows through the garden, often complete with ducks paddling along, giving the house its’ name. There are also beautiful planters and borders, making it a colourful and pretty place to sit and soak in the views whilst listening to the murmur of the water.
Please note that the garden is not enclosed from the road nor the stream, and as such children must be closely supervised at all times.
The village of Braithwaite offers many amenities, including a local shop, a tea room, excellent pubs, and multiple glorious valley walks right from the doorstep.
Only 2 miles away is the picturesque market town of Keswick, where you will find various café’s, independent shops and deli’s.
The surrounding area offers breath-taking scenery of the north-western Lake District, with Braithwaite being at the foot of the Newland’s Valley, and the well-known Buttermere Valley only a 15 minute drive away.
If you enjoy a spot of hiking, why not head up the fells to Grizedale Pike, or the Coledale Horseshoe for some unforgettable scenery. Also within easy reach is Bassenthwaite Lake, a known nesting site for Ospreys.

For our first stay in the Lake District, The Duck House in Braithwaite was in a perfect location for Keswick and the surrounding areas. Braithwaite is a lovely little village and we were within walking distance of a couple of pubs which served lovely food. The house had everything we needed and we had a great stay! We can definitely recommend this property.

Lovely bungalow - nicely furnished and decorated, very well equipped. Comfortable beds, great shower. Wi-Fi worked well. We enjoyed sitting in the sun room looking at the lovely view. There is a nice back patio with a table and chairs which would be lovely on sunny days. Off-road parking. Great location for access to village shop and pubs plus beautiful walks from the door. Buses run through the village into Keswickit’s a nice walk. Hosts were helpful and friendly. We appreciated their efforts to recycle, reduce single use plastic and to use non-polluting cleaning products. We would definitely consider staying again.
Phone signal wasn’t great but that’s due to the village location - not the property.

Lovely, spacious house. Quiet location with easy access to Keswick and the rest of the Lake District.
The access to the driveway is challenging, particularly with a larger vehicle. You certainly need your wits about you! The location pin provided by the host was not accurate but the written directions were. You are asked to strip the beds and do some other things before you leave (more than I've come across in other stays). Check out time is 9.30am so this was difficult with a small toddler. Overall we enjoyed the stay and these are just very minor gripes.

The Duck house is a gem! In a fantastic location for walking, with easy access to Keswick. It is clean, comfortable, tastefully decorated and very well equipped. Lovely comfortable bed, smart kitchen and very modern bathrooms powerful showers and a huge deep bath! A lovely conservatory with a huge picture window looking over beautiful countryside. The Duck House is surrounded by mountains... with great walks from the door. Private parking, and a short walk to the village store, The Royal Oak and Jasper's coffee shop. We loved our stay and recommend it highly.

Cottage was beautiful, clean and well appointed. Central Braithwaite village. Great to stroll to the village shop. All local areas easily accessible. Great walks on the doorstep.
We found the key safe a bit of a trial as we were in and out quite a bit but that is really a very small thing. Probably need a stash of parking discs as they are easy to forget to return

The bungalow was great. Exactly as the photos and spotlessly clean. It had all the facilities we needed and was a fantastic base for days out in the lake district.
