A bad experience and certainly not a 4 star rating worthy, poorly maintained . Dirty carpet and lifting floor boards .

The Balmoral gives value for money but the infrastructure is quite old.

The personnel went out of their way to make it a good experience. The politeness of the staff was evident right from the security guard outside to the cleaners.

Old style colonial hotel like going back in time! Very helpful staff. Lovely setting right on the beach in Durban. Some of the fixtures and fittings could do with refreshing or updating - for instance stair carpets very worn. Overall a very good experience though.

Totally appalled to arrive home to the UK to be informed that my credit card had been subject to credit card fraud of a few hundred GB pounds and I know that it had to be by a member of staff at this hotel. So watch out there are criminals at this hotel.

Great hotel, nice room and friendly staff plus in the best location in Durban.

Other guests are noisy and security is slack in controlling the noise. Street noise (prostitutes) are plentiful - keep windows closed

Historical Colonial hotel. Well maintained and clean. Attentive staff.

The hotel is a bit old, but it was fine overall and had a touch of class given its age, which i liked. Room was a little small but not too small and was fairly clean. Street was a little noisy and the guys on the street yelling and talking in front of the hotel. For the price, its reasonable, but not great. I asked for a late check out - leaving on a Monday - I came to check out 30 minutes after the time and the guy at the front wanted to charge me. With all the hotels and traveling I have done, that was the first time I have had someone say that to me, especially after I informed them of a late check out. I refused but it left a sour taste in my mouth, so to speak.

Nothing special. Good location. Good staff. Hotel is under renovation. Spacious. Safe parking

The hotel is outdated. It was probably a good hotel around 10 years ago. Its in bad condition (our shower didnt work and they had to fix it) and even the floor is uneven. The staff were very nice and food was good.

Arrived at the hotel and was immediately seen to by a member of staff, offered a welcome drink and then alas it went down hillWe were shown to our room that had a strange smell, there was only 2 plug sockets that could be used, which means you had the choice of the refrigerator, tv or hair dryer, let alone if you needed to charge anything else, the safe had the wrong instructions on it( the deputy manager had already pointed this out to his boss but nothing been done), the ceramic in the bathroom was stained and generally in a poor condition. Wifi was not working so could not see places to eat or doThought we would try the restaurant, no Rose wine or local beer, and to be honest food was not great (would not recommend eating there)By this time I asked to speak to manager, who was polite and offered room upgrade, and a complimentary ice cream. Went to pay the bill, but unable to do so as they did not have cash held in the restaurant or appears anywhere as would bring the bill to our room later that nightRoom upgrade was better but still in need of some TLC, the bathroom especially same tired look as you chased the toilet roll around the floor cause the holder was broken And finally dont rush to get up for the breakfast So in summary staff could not be friendly enough but the hotel is a shadow of its former glory

Raya hotels should rate it a 1star, its revolting from the smell of the 4 rooms we were offered to the food&broken furniture and much more, wouldnt recommend it to international guests either,it was a nasty experience and it looks nothing from the outside to the inside, they should improve their service or close down

the staff were really amazing...the attention to our check-in, comfortability and help were exceptional.

Nice place but hotel is too old but on the other hand service is really good. Location is very nice just opposite to beach but you cant go out on the beach at night. The area is dangerous
3.0
The hotel is conveniently located right on the beach road, but otherwise it's in a not especially charming part of the city. At night the area is a bit dodgy and it's not the place to go if you're looking for great amenities or some place to relax after a long day of sight-seeing, etc. The hotel itself is secure and well-kept, and the complimentary breakfast is good.
3.0
The hotel was mediocore in style and amenities (i.e. washcloths were not available). However, the daily breakfast buffet was excellent and included in the room rate. I would stay again.
4.0
A very nice hotel on the beach front . The staff are extremely helpful and nothing was too much trouble . Will be going back next year
2.0
This hotel is very dated. Service was good. But rooms are 50 years old. Old carpets, old furniture, old TV, old bed and linen, old A/C. Not even double glazed, so all the traffic keeps you awake during the night. Certainly 4 star in 1950, but not 2006. Needs a complete refurb. Not worth the price. Many better hotels at the same price around.
