Great location and provided everything we needed.

The floor felt a gritty as if it wasn't vacuumed; no kleenex in the room; window was cracked and cold air was getting in. Otherwise, sheets and towels were clean. Shower had hot water. All else was ok.

Hotel needs serious updating! Mattresses were atrocious, vinyl flooring, room was 80 degrees with no way to moderate or control temp, mouldings, wall paper, paint, etc. was old scratched, chipped and in poor condition…same with hallway carpeting. No idea how you have this hotel rated as a decently rated hotel!

Loved the friendly staff and this place - excellent location. It’s older but great price because of it - we had 5 rooms - would ask for room inside vs street - we had one street side and it was noisy all night. (I played white noise on my phone and got ear plugs). We would stay here again -

Location was great for our adventures; staff was friendly and accommodating.

My friends and I stayed in two rooms for two nights. The location was excellent and the rooms were clean, but as for the rest, the stay was extremely disappointing. The rooms did not look *anything* like the pictures, but were spare and somewhat run-down versions of freshman dorm rooms. The mattresses in my room were fairly new and comfortable, but my friends in the other room reported springs they could both feel and hear. The single radiators were on only part of the time and the temperature could not be controlled in the rooms. There was an actual open gap under the window A/C units, so there was a strong draft of sub-freezing air all night. We stuffed towels under our unit to reduce the draft, but our friends did not want to do that because they were trying to get rid of a strong smell of cleaning fluids in their room. Obviously the window gap also admitted loud early-morning (pre-5 am) construction and street noises. The showers supplied about five seconds worth of hot water on both days, after which they turned lukewarm.
Certainly as far as comfort went, this stay was the worst we’ve experienced in NY so far. The rooms bore no resemblance to the advertised pics. They were somewhat less expensive than some others we considered but in hindsight we would have gladly paid a little more for climate-controlled rooms with hot water and a coffee maker! Definitely do NOT recommend.

Took a 5 day trip to NYC with our Son and Granddaughters.
The St James has the perfect location for roaming around Mid-Town. Easy walk to the Empire State Building & Macy's. Just a block off Times Square and a couple of blocks from Rockefeller Center. Most of the major theaters are within easy walking distance. South end of Central Park is less than a mile away if you are in for a little longer walk, or just a quick taxi away. Christmas time in NYC is always amazing.

Friendly, clean, convenient.

Great place geographically, so close to Times Square and all the nonsense. Room painfully small, but clean as a whistle. Honestly, if you go there for a hotel break then you’re missing the point. It is a great place to use as a touring base, and a decent place to crash at the end of the day. Now the dude behind the desk (Joey) deserves a medal. What a guy! So helpful and makes the the place complete. 10 stars to this fellow. I will be back.

The staff is very nice but the hotel is old, it needs some work. The beds are terrible, too noisy, mattresses are old and soft.
We had some water issues in the bathroom, the water color was brown.

Very cozy and exactly what we needed.

The staff was very kind and accommodating. I was given a room by the elevator that was very loud. They found me a better situation and were very helpful.

For the price, you can't beat it. There's noise pollution, so it was difficult to sleep through the night. There's no central air - only window units for AC.

What a lovely hidden gem
Great hotel, incredible location and lovely staff

The hotel appeared to be clean and well-maintained. It features vintage decor and furniture in certain areas. The elevators are slow, so one needs to allow time in leaving the building to be somewhere in a hurry. The room was spacious with a table and two chairs. Joey ay the front desk took time to welcome us and chat a bit; he is a gem of an employee and made our stay even more pleasant. I would definitely stay again.

Great stay for the price

This hotel was charmingly old school, but also could use some updating. Service at the front desk was very sweet and helpful. Our toilet overflowed and I'm not certain they cleaned the bathroom afterward.

Comfortable clean and excellent location

Perfect location! Less than a block to Times Square, a couple of blocks from the subway, short walk to 30 Rock, shopping on 5th Ave, NYC Library, etc., lots of good food nearby and a market next door. Quiet, comfortable, actually a good sized room for NYC. We had a renovated room at the back of the hotel. No view there but also no noise! Perfect for our family. Extremely friendly and helpful front desk. We’ll be back!

I had another excellent stay at the St. James Hotel. Joey is the best front desk attendant. He always gives me a great welcome back at every stay. This property is one of my go to accomodations when visiting. I love the cleanliness of the rooms and comfort, at an affordable price.

Our check-in was great. Joey was very helpful and accommodating, as well as funny. He went out of his way to help us.

Everything was almost perfect except for a few things:
1) the bed mattress needs to be replaced in our room. always felt like I was going to roll out of it
2) hot water not always available
But, I would definitely stay here again. They have done a lot to improve it, they just need to continue to make it more comfortable.
3.0
Convenient location, but very limited amenities. The property itself is really showing its age and needs a total refresh. There are even just window air conditioners and no wall thermostat. The staff is pleasant, but obviously there is nothing they can do about incredibly noisy road work outside that began at 4:40 am. The windows are so thin that I could hear voices on the sidewalk below despite the fact that my room was on the third floor.

Always love staying here. Good hotel great location.

Nice hotel. Friendly staff.

This was the perfect stay for our 3 days of Broadway therapy in New York. The front desk was extremely helpful and friendly; the location was perfect for our show experience; and the hotel was basic and clean for our comfort. Right next door is a great source of breakfast, snacks or quick meals, so the lack of a breakfast is not a problem.

Excellent place to stay. Connolly’s is great and Cooks Eatery is a hidden gem.

Great hotel. Simple and clean. Allowed us to check in early for a small fee. Very accommodating. 5 minutes from Times Square. Walkable!

Great place to stay: roomy room, so centrally located I could walk to the Broadway play I was seeing. Such a value!

The hotel is vintage and cute. Very clean. Excellent location is very walkable for many sight seeing opportunities. The staff is friendly, especially Joey, who was so nice and helpful! Room was decent size for NYC, clean, well stocked bathroom. Bed wasn't terrible but wasn't great. We slept good though. No complaints for a basic hotel, but a mini refrigerator would be nice. Right next door is a great little store for food, drinks, snacks, etc. For being so close to Times Square, it's pretty quiet and feels safe. We would definitely stay again.

Perfect location. In the heart of 5th avenue and Times Square

Like the staff and cleanliness. Only issue was the room was not being cleaned daily.
Great location!

It was nice enough. Staff was great. I think this was a set for the movie Crusing. Lol

Property and service was great. Water in the shower was tepid at best

The room was slightly outdated, however it was really clean. Perfect location, in the middle of everything we wanted to go see during our visit and it was surprisingly quiet. Staff was really nice, luggage storage was really useful. No complaints at all considering the very reasonable price, would definitely go again!

Close to dining. Walkable to everything. Friendly staff and took care of my transportation need to airport! Excellent place to stay. Will be back!

This was a clean basic hotel in a great location. If you want a landing spot to enjoy the city, theatre, shopping and busy New York than this is perfect spot.

In the middle of NYC. 2 minutes to Times Square, 4 minutes to 5th Avenue, 10 minutes to the Rock.

I loved the location. It was clean and staff were friendly . We didn't require much help . Room was quiet and clean . Would easily stay again .
4.0
As far as 2 star hotels go, the look and everything meets minimum expectations. However, good luck getting hot water for showers. I had one shower with a couple minutes of lukewarm water.
Also, you have a choice between AC or sleep because the window AC unit is a bit loud.
