There is extensive parking which is a benefit. The first impression when walking into the lovely building is of an unloved and uncared for property. There clearly has been a lot of thought put into the decor in the hotel's past however scuffed and chipped paint on the doors and old *fashioned unmatching carpets add to the sinking feeling. The bedroom furniture is out of date and tired. The bathroom well at least it was clean however the tiles and fittings are so outdated and tired looking with the grout in the shower/bath being moldy. Nobody wants a corner bath from the 1980's in peach.
Going into the restaurant you have a small bar with tired and ripped flooring behind it - not great when in an area where food/drink is being transported and you require highest hygiene standards.
Service - slack and non attentive. Food quality - started off really well with a nicely presented starter which was tasty main course was OK. However a request for sauces and vinegar resulted in me having to go to the bar and asking for it as there was nobody present in the restaurant. The result of my request was a plastic bottle of vinegar and a plastic bottle of ketchup.
I did not have breakfast at an additional cost of £15 my expectations following the experience to hand would not have been met.
The expectations for the price of the stay were not met. The lack of uniform and formality within the venue does not meet the expectations of paying the price of an upgraded room.

First room I checked into seemed cold and damp and there was a constant noise of the cistern running
Quickly changed to another room thus one was cold and took a good few hours to warm up I left the heater on all night.
Cleaners came twice to clean my room at 10am and at 10.49am check out is 11am
Food lovely and well presented.
Staff friendly lovely old building

Our room was wonderful - spacious, immaculately clean, beautifully furnished and with wonderful views from the windows, out across the surrounding countryside. The breakfast was first rate, and really set us up for a day of adventure in the local area. We loved our visit to Makeney Hall and will definitely be back for another stay in a few months.

Beautiful hotel, friendly staff.
Great location.

Really, really lovely people working there, and the exterior of the building and it’s surrounds are beautiful. Inside, away from the main areas, the hotel itself is very tired looking and in need of attention. Bedroom was a little shabby and the bathroom was very, very dated indeed.
Breakfast wasn’t the greatest, but actually not as over priced as many hotels can be.

I have stayed at Makeney Hall five times now which says a lot. This time I was with my dog and also a friend. I booked two rooms which Expedia said were, "in the courtyard (briliant) pet friendly and on the ground floor". Upon arrival, I was told that both rooms were on the first floor. I explained what Expedia said and reception fixed it so my friend would be on the first floor and me and my dog couldl be on the ground floor. Due to this, despited being told that the room would be ready after three, me and my dog's room ended up being ready around 5 p.m.
For us, it was fine but other travellers might have been upset. Also, after enquiring from reception the time for breakfast, we were told that it would be from 7 a.m. as the next day was Monday. We arrived at around 7.40 to be told that as it was a bank holiday it would be starting at 8. Again, not the end of the world but we are reasonable people and some aren't. We had to eat in the beautiful drawing room which is a fair way from the non friendly restaurant. If I had been travelling alone, this would have been a problem. Also, the drawing room was not set up for our breakfast and so I had to strip a table in the restaurant of napkin, knives and forks. Again, bot the end of the world but I thinik that it can make pet owners a bit ostracized. I still love Makeney Hall and will stay again. This is constructive criticism, only I will always recommend this fabulous hotel.

It was fine, toilet not not great, shower sounded like there were ducks in there and no tv remote, reception didn’t answer to assist

Only had a 1 night stay for a local event. Lovely place to stay in private grounds. The building was very nice although the room in the courtyard was slightly dated and basic but clean and comfortable. We took our dog with us and had an evening meal with friends (8 of us) and they gave us our own private room (a meeting room) which was great and perfect for all of us. Bar staff was very helpful and efficient. Would definitely go back if in the area again.

We stayed in Court Yard. Very tired area noises guests late night dogs barking constantly. Worst hotel ever stayed in. Reception not bothered

Coffe facilities poor, breakfast minimal, room dirty cobwebs, dust and sink hole was full of dirty gum, chair in bathroom rusty, cobwebs, upstairs up at 6 and loud creaking floors with loud bathroom water most the morning.

was not told a wedding reception was taking place! had to move rooms as noise was awful

No handrail to hang bath towels, bed didn't feel clean (duvet). Toiletries and refreshment for one person, even though it was a twin room. Room very basic for the price.

Polite and friendly staff. Cleanliness was obviously a priority. The hotel proved a wonderful centre for the places we had planned to visit and a great place to return to to rest. The meals we ordered were splendid and the breakfast choices were splendid.

Friendly, helpful staff. Beautiful old house and grounds. Didn’t eat there so can’t comment on the food. En suite needs an upgrade.

All I can say is they are very good at photo shop, the pictures on all booking sights are misleading, if your expecting an exutive room be in for a surprise, a small dank room that smelt of mothballs, the decor hasn't been updated since the great war, a bed so small and hard even one of the seven dwarfs would struggle to sleep in it, you would get a better night's sleep on a park bench using a pigeon as a pillow and using the Sunday times as the quilt, the beds were 2 singles pushed together and a nylon sheet on top, upon inspection one off the mattresses was soiled, slept on only one single bed, I tried to complain but the manager was harder to find than Lord Lucan, the hotel room electrical appliances and lamps safety inspections were years out of date, so if your looking for a soviet era Moscow hotel experience in the beautiful Derbyshire country side, come visit the USSR Fawlty towers in belper, avoid at all costs!!! Only positive was the exit road and the views

Comfortable and friendly, certainly be staying again at some point

The location is lovely but it's a old, tired, worn out hotel in much need of renovation - the sash window was broken so wouldn't stay open, the toilet seat broken, thread-bare carpets, the shower was a trickle and the taps broken. Admittedly the room was cheap, but it wasn't great.
3.0 / 10.0
All mostly fine, although only having bath in the room with no means of attaching the shower head to the wall was less than ideal.

Great decor in my room- double with single occupancy- and very comfortable bed.
Really liked the sense of history around the place. Usually stay in a Premier Inn when I come to the area- can’t see that I will go back there after this stay at Makeney.

Was only there for 1 night before heading off to Cornwall very early. No problems at all, staff were friendly and welcoming and the room exactly what I needed. Highly recommended!!

Room was lovely and comfortable with everything you'd need, couple of loose tiles on the bathroom but otherwise room was great.
My only criticism would be the limited menu-what I had was nice but v.little choice and there wasn't a low-fat menu choice.

I couldn't have asked for more from my one-night stay. The location of Makeney Hall was perfect for my needs, with errands to run nearby over a couple of days plus a football match in Derby on the night, so it was nice and accessible. The room was clean and comfortable, quiet too, all the staff I spoke to while I was there were friendly and helpful.

Clean, friendly staff.
Nice local pubs in area.

Lovely large room with a great view. Breakfast was very disappointing…mushrooms hardly cooked anemic and general quality and lack of availability spoilt our morning. We expected better given its an extra cost. Would definitely stay again as hotel is gorgeous but would be good if the hotel can improve its breakfast service. Thanks

A lovely Hotel, only comment is that is quite large and obviously expensive to heat so was cold. The Room did have an additional blow heater but the Restaurant and Bar needs to be warmer in cold weather

Really lovely hotel and nice staff.

This is a lovely building with many original features, set in beautiful and well-kept grounds.
I just found the room a little small, the taps in the bathroom, very annoying and the fan noisy.
Breakfast was also disappointing.

Excellent hotel comfortable room after free upgrade to junior suite. Breakfast very good. Only downside was low water pressure in shower and poor Wi-Fi.

Very clean and comfortable, as I arrived late and left early I didn’t get to see the grounds or sample the food, I would have happily stayed longer if I could

Beautiful grounds, well maintained building with traditional yet modern feel
Great value
