Overall a great stay at the Merchant. The girl at check in was very friendly and helpful. She also made some banging freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. Our room was room 7 on the third floor. The room was very spacious, the bed was comfortable and clean. The room could have used some more decorations but that’s not the end of the world. The bathroom was ok; the water splashed out underneath the glass which was not ideal. The water pressure was a little low. The bathroom had essentially no counter space, had to resort to using the toilet seat as a countertop. The morning breakfast options were ok, maybe more variety or changes of options would’ve been nice. The location cannot be beat, super convenient. Also fun that almost every ghost tour comes by, but sadly my husband and I did not have any paranormal experiences here during our stay. All in all, would recommend and would come back.

A real gem near Marbelhead. Everything about this hotel was perfect!

It was great and hit the spot. The only thing I might work on is the email for late arrivals and finding the parking lot. For first timers to Salem it was confusing but we made it.

We checked in after hours so no staff to help us but the directions for what to do after hours was spot on. We just had a difficult time with our heavy luggage walking up 3 flights of stairs. All the snack amenities were awesome. We always got in too late at night to enjoy a fresh hot cookie but it’s a great touch.

The entire experience was phenomenal from start to finish. The staff was sweet. The after office hours check in went smoothly. Our room was absolutely perfect. The fresh snacks every day were top notch! The coffee bar was nice. Everything is within walking distance. Will definitely be staying here again.

The entire experience was phenomenal from start to finish. The staff was sweet. Even when I accidentally parked in the wromg spot and had to move, they were very nice about it. The after office hours check in went smoothly. Our room was absolutely perfect. The fresh snacks every day were top notch! My girlfriend was so excited about them every day. The coffee bar was nice. Everything is within walking distance. I will definitely be staying here again.

The Merchant is a wonderful place to stay within walking distance of many wonderful sights in Salem.
It is a beautiful old building converted into a splendid B&B.

Enjoyed our visit to Salem and the Merchant. This hotel was on my wife's bucket list. I would have looked for a first floor room when I booked if I realized I would have to climb to the third floor with significant disability of my legs. We may return to the Merchant if we can get first floor accommodations.

We stayed in the room on the top floor which has the only tub in the hotel. It also has a ladder leading to the roof where there is your own private balcony. It is not for the arthritic, though, with lots of stairs and you carry own luggage, no elevator but that is not a complaint - it is to be expected from a centuries old building.
Be sure to breakfast at the Ugly Mug nearby.
We found the kitchen to have remarkable coffees, cereals, jars of goodies in the fridge, juices and filtered water for refills so no wasted plastic.
We dined at Rockafellas just across the street and the leftovers can be stored in a fridge for microwave later.
The staff is gone after 5 pm but being on your own in the common room is just fine.
There is something about walking in a building where President George Washington walked. Be sure to sit beside the fireplace nearest the kitchen, it is original and he may have warmed himself beside it with Martha by his side.

Not only was the property and room absolutely adorable and homey but the amenities were next level amazing… the chocolate chip cookies OMG. The fireplace in the room was wonderful and kept us nice and toasty! The bathroom floor was heated and felt amazing! Bed was super comfy, it made us not want to leave! The stairs were beautiful but carrying luggage was a bit difficult, we appreciated the staff helping get bags up to our room. Not only were the cookies to die for but the fridges were stocked with delicious goodies as well (I personally enjoyed the quiche and yogurt parfait!)!!!
If you are wanting to walk to all the historic sites, the Merchant is in the best location!
The staff was so nice and helpful! They even allowed us to keep our luggage there while we continue to explore the town after check out.
We will definitely be returning back to The Merchant for our next stay in Salem!

Google maps took us behind the property. It was a bit confusing but we called the hotel and they were very helpful. Lovely place and so convenient.

It was interesting that it was a Historical house where George Washington slept. But offered no amenities . No bar or breakfast served.

The Merchant was a very unique stay. The front desk people were very friendly when making the reservation for the property as well as one of their parking spots. The room was gorgeous and very well cleaned. The snacks and drinks offered in their kitchen was a very welcomed treat upon returning at night.

The property is perfectly located.
We truly enjoyed the hotel and the staff.

Staff was very welcoming and friendly. Room was very clean and well-maintained, and the overall ambiance was nice. Location is perfect for walking around Salem, and a pretty easy 5-6 minute walk from the trains. Parking is available, but very limited, so make sure you contact the staff and discuss parking options. Since this is an older property, I believe stairs are the only option for the rooms on the higher floors, so if you have issues with stairs you might want to discuss this with staff as well. Overall, a lovely place with friendly staff and a great location. I would definitely recommend it.

Shared fridge was not ideal. The air conditioning wasn’t great, but the staff were kind and helpful. During our stay, there was construction which made exiting with our luggage more strenuous than expected. Really enjoyed the heated bathroom floor and fireplace, however the room was smaller than desired. Will not return to this hotel if staying in Salem again.

The only thing we found strange was that the TV was on the same wall as the bed and could not be turned to face the bed so you had to watch on an angle. Maybe add an arm that can turn or put it on a tv table to make it more accessible.

Parking not ideal
They did not have anything for breakfast but warm scones and they were not available until after 9 am….not what I am looking for in an Inn

we are 70 year olds with luggage, the room was a third floor with steep stairs and the was no elevator nor a valet to help out.

The hotel is well situated and the common areas very pleasant. Our room was fine other than the carpet which was dirty and stained. The shower control was broken and fell off constantly. We also didn’t get our room cleaned because we did realise you had to hang a sign on the door to request it!
The staff were nice and the complimentary tea/coffee etc a nice touch.
