No breakfast, location great
Was put in a room in the basement with a stone floor, brick walls, no central lights to speak of, no wardrobe, with the thick dank smell of deep earth and a pervading sense of moisture in the air. The hot water took a full 3 minutes to reach the sink or shower and the open aspect of the toilet and shower left no audio room for doubt. I imagine, given the dungeon/prison cell aspects that the room was more likely to be rented by the hour.
We really just asked for a normal hotel room - nowhere did I notice on the website that I may undergo some kind of historic re-enactment. It appears that wrist restraints or something had been removed from near the head of the bed so thankyou to the staff for that. They were attentive and kind but I couldn't avoid noticing an air of incredulity that a sixty something couple were allocated a room with a view to middle earth.

I liked how different it was to your standard hotel. The decor was very quirky and felt very private.
At times I found it just a little too dark, and the bathroom was very small so didn’t feel we had much space.
4.3
The staff were very friendly and helpful lovely touch with the whipped soap you get to choose. The room was stunning very spacious and amazing design. The terrace and hot tub added a wonderful unique twist to the room. Had a fantastic stay we will be back again!
The stairs up to the terrace are very steep and can be slippy if you have been out in the tub. The hotel provided no slip slippers however.

The hot tub was very nice and bed the pillows

Very old building, made into a very modern hotel.
The noise. Unfortunately we stayed underground, our neighbours were very loud. The night staff was very efficient and dealt with the noise accordingly.
But apart from the guests next door the stay was incredible.

This hotel was amazing, one of a kind! This is a hotel that truly has to be experienced to u destined. The room was out of this world and I doubt you will find another one like it. The bathroom was one of the main features and they provide you with bath a bath bomb and a bath Whip on arrival. The hotel is as central as you can get to York.
You could hear people walking above early hours and the Tv however we were provided with ear plugs and it’s an old building to be expected.

The rooms are beautiful and the decor is excellent. Rooms are completely gorgeous. So many interesting touches, details and the ideas behind the rooms and the design of them is amazing.
I could not check in with bags easily because I could not drive to the property. When asking about this in advance on the phone, staff did not tell me that the city centre access is blocked by bollards that will not allow you to drive into the city centre at most times of the day anymore. So I had to park about a ten min walk away and then drag my suitcases across town. This was not fun. It's also very noisy around there, although the Motel warns you of this in messages after you check in.

Liked the feeling when walking into the motel itself and it was nice and warm due to it being cold weather. Staff was friendly and helpful!
The room we stayed in was a windowless room and had a certain aesthetic. Had concrete walls all round the room, this is clearly the quirkiness of the motel which I can understand and appreciate, but the bathroom side of things definitely put us off. The toilet & shower were separate cubicles behind the bed with no doors to them which takes away privacy and doesn’t separate from the “bedroom” and flushing the toilet was loud so it would disturb anyone in the middle of the night if you’re a light sleeper.

Staff we're fantastic, from the little personal touches to how unique the place is it was a really fantastic stay.
Room was spotless with everything you'd need, really nice finishing touches, very comfy bed and nice and warm given I chose a basement room and it was a very cold night.
We were situated close to their bar and was a little worried about noise but it really wasn't an issue at all and I didn't need the ear buds the staff provided.
Absolutely nothing.

Quirky and very central, romantic with a dungeon twist warm and cosy room perfect for any special occasion
Everything loved the location the decor the extra touches
Complimentary slippers bath bombs etc
4.3
Quirky, great location and just that bit different
Basement rooms are quite ‘snug’, but to be fair they made this clear at the point of booking.
4.3
Quirky!!! Fantastic location. Atmospheric room in the basement x
Could hear every word from room next door just talking

I loved the decor in the reception, the hallway and the bedroom.
I liked the comfiness of the bed.
There were several things within the room and welcome we received that differed from other hotels I’ve been in, which seemed a bit unusual.
Firstly, upon arrival two of us were greeted by 3 members of staff which didn’t feel welcoming, it felt daunting. Then two male staff took two of us females to our room and then shut us all inside the room together- this was particularly uncomfortable and didn’t sit well with us. There was nothing untoward in the behaviour or demeanour of the two male staff, it just oversteps a few boundaries.
The shower in the bathroom leaked and the floor was consistently wet which was a hazard.
We were in the Splendid room, and the double plug socket next to the right side of the bed wasn’t secured to the wall.
The minibar wasn’t in a fridge so the beverages weren’t chilled. There was water under the bedside table but because of where it had been placed we didn’t notice it until checking out!
There was no headboard so our pillows kept slipping down the back of the bed. This wasn’t perfect nights sleep either.

My husband and I booked this weekend away for his birthday treat.
The room exceeded both of our expectations. It was above and beyond what we ever imagined. The attention to detail was spot on and the cold hand flannels on arrival was a great touch.
We loved that we could choose from a variety of soaps and have a sample for our room.
In addition, the ear plugs that were given were a great touch also as this made all the difference towards a peaceful sleep.
We will deffinately be back, and we have already been recommending you to our friends. We are wanting to try the rooms with the jacuzzi in next time.
This would have to be the best couples experience to date.
We also loved the fact that you are located right in the middle of the town and are only seconds/minutes away from the pubs, restaurants and attractions.
There was nothing that we did not like about this place. It ticked ALL of our boxes...and more!

Hotel is very quirky in an amazing location for bars and shops.

I liked hiw central the hotel was.
The rooms where extremely small.
Bathroom was tiny when you sat on the loo your knees touched the wall in front. Tge toilet was loose from the floor so wobbled when i sat on it. Sink was minute you couldn't wash in it.
Very disappointed considering how much it cost.
The bar manager James in pink cocktail bar was extremely rude and refused to serve one of my friends saying he was drunk and slearing his words which was rubbish.
4.3
Friendly & approachable staff.
Comfy beds
Too dark, was in the underground room, felt like I was in a dungeon.
4.3
The location was ideal, property was quirky and had a subtle dark emotion to it. The soap selection on check in is a nice personalised touch. Staff helpful and very clean.
There are communications about the noise due to it being a central location. The property definitely needs sound proofing from external noise. I got zero sleep, the street noise with drinkers went on until 5.30am, when this stopped the road sweeper went on for the next hour, then the glass recycling started! I couldn’t wait to get home to get some sleep! If I stayed again I would book a room with no window!
4.3
Loved the style/decor, the recent addition of air con, personalisation (soaps), friendliness of staff and the location. It was a busy time so outside noise was expected so staff gave us earplugs too!
4.3
Very nice and beautiful, excellent staff, the design is very modern,it's quite clean.
Not very comfy - bathroom is very small, too dark in many places.
4.3
I liked the quirkiness of the motel. It gave a different and more exciting vibe than something as basic as a premier inn or travelodge.
The only thing I thought was a little too out of the ordinary was not having the “toilet” be separated from the main room. There was a partition, but even so, while lying in bed, my head was less than a metre from the actual toilet itself.
4.3
Everything was perfect and the staff went the extra mile
4.3
Absolutely everything it was fantastic
There was nothing we didn’t like.
4.3
The decor was nice and the hotel was in a good location. The waterfall shower was lovely.
The room felt a little damp so all our clothes felt damp in the morning. There was no door to the bathroom which I was not aware of before booking
4.3
The style was very different staff were friendly
Once shown to our room I’d prefer to figure the room out ourselves not a 10 minute demonstration in the room I just want to relax
4.3
The check in process was good, the room was very clean,
Complimentary bath bomb and soap was also a nice touch.
Staff were pleasant and professional
Due to being in the basement and the rain the whole bathroom was flooded with water.
We also were unable to use the TV as the TV would not work and neither would the connection to out phones, someone did try to fix this however this was not successful. Its a shame seeing as we paid over £250 for a new hotel opened in 2022 to have a bathroom flood and a tv not working. We asked if we could pay for a film as that was all that was working and then if a refund would woek but they stated this is not possible due to the money going elsewhere.
We spoke to the duty manager regarding our however she was unable to offer us any discount/refund and stated the manager would call us tomorrow to see what can be done.
4.3
Staff very friendly and welcoming room was absolutely stunning and couldn’t ask for more.
4.3
Everything about this hotel was amazing! The decor was beautiful throughout the whole hotel. The service from every single staff member was absolutely outstanding. We were offered a cold towel on arrival, chose our own soap & bath bomb for the room. And our luggage was already waiting in the room for us!
There was nothing we did not like or enjoy about our stay in this hotel. It was absolutely perfect
4.3
The staff were impeccable in my brief interactions. I was greeted with possibly the warmest and most comprehensive welcome I have yet had. The decor and location were both just superb.
I understand the bathrooms differ in each room, I found mine usable but very cramped. I'd suggest adding a shelf above the sink at least given the very limited space. This did not overall affect my stay.
4.3
Decor was great
Great location
Comfy bed
Dressing table with no mirror
No Netflix as stated
Small bath /tiny sink/bathroom curtain broken/ noisy air con with little effect....thin walls ( could hear next door talking to 6am)
