About this villa rental
The Winthrop Estate is a registered Great Estate built in 1875 for Henri Braem, US Ambassador to Denmark and Partner in Cunard Steamship Lines, famous for the ultra-luxurious Queen Mary ship line among others. Braem sold the property to the Winthrop family, descendants of John Winthrop, the founding governor of Massachusetts, from which the property took its current name. The manor is now freshly renovated with modern touches thoughtful of its origins and includes diverse amenities. The 32 landscaped acres have expansive views of Lenox Mountain. Enjoy the library room, paneled with rare Purpleheart and its array of art and literature books, as well as a sitting room with fireplace and luscious conservatory. 100% carbon neutral.
The home includes a dining room, professional kitchen, fire pit and expansive stone patio. We provide a long list of amenities, for kids big and small we offer a virtual reality gaming room, PS4 gaming setup, foosball table, board games and more. For outdoors you will find bocce, lawn croquet and badminton equipment, large Jenga and more.
The Berkshires is one of the country's top cultural centers and the Winthrop is steps away from many leading national institutions: Tanglewood (summer home to the Boston Symphony Orchestra), Shakespeare and Company, The Norman Rockwell Museum and Edith Wharton's The Mount. Clark Art, Jacobs Pillow, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (the third largest in the US), Kripalu (largest yoga center), Williams College (#1 Liberal Arts College in the US) are all nearby.
The Berkshires is also home to a variety of outdoor destinations: Bousquet, Butternut, Catamount (longest zip line in the USA) and Jiminy Peak.
We provide local coffee, popcorn, biscotti, teas, cocoa, graham crackers, chocolate, candy and more. A welcome basket of local goods and fresh cut flowers greet your party.
Manager's previous property was #1 on VRBO in the Berkshires, and was showcased on Netflix's "World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals" series.
The thirty acres are very private, but you are also steps to downtown Lenox, the heart of the Berkshire hills. Lenox is home not only to a variety of leading cultural institutions, but also to many fine and farm-to-table dining experiences.

What a fantastic summer getaway and reunion with family and friends. We had 22 folks stay here and from the start the stay couldn't have been better. Jamie (owner) was kind enough to give us a 45 min tour and background when we arrived. Of the 6 reunions we've had in the last 9 years, this was clearly the most memorable and most cherished.

Absolutely stunning property - truly incredible stay. Recommend to anyone looking for a large group getaway. Fast WiFi, commercial grade kitchen and plentiful supplies make it easy for large groups. beautiful property and room for activities on a huge lawn. Highly recommend.

Lenox’ tradition of luxury dates back to Gilded Age ‘Summer Cottages’ where high society entertained friends and family at private country estates. Today these luxuries are found at resorts replete with spas, fine dining, recreation and more. Yet they don’t offer the ultimate luxury: privacy.
The Winthrop Estate is a true break from the world. We were struck by the privacy: nobody in sight, nothing competing for our attention. Relaxing with a partner in an environment like this is priceless. Time for quiet contemplation is scarce; we highly value opportunities to embrace it.
Ethylwynde captures the spirit of the Gilded Age while offering tasteful modernizations. From reliable WiFi to updated amenities, it seamlessly blends the best of both eras.
We enjoyed dinner at Alta before retiring to Ethylwynde for the best sleep we’ve had in ages. The walls of the master bedroom are lined with an acoustic treatment that blocks any ambient noise. The bed is massive, and fitted with decadent linens and pillows.
We slept in and had breakfast at Haven. We took our coffees back to the estate for an unrushed morning and settled into a pair of antique leather chairs to play a game of Scrabble.
Packing up was painful; you won’t want to leave, either. Whether to celebrate a special occasion, or just quietly enjoy one another’s company, Ethylwynde is an absolute dream. If you want to live your best life, you’ll be hard pressed to find better accommodations than the Winthrop Estate.
