The property looks so good and is very clean.
The rooms were bit small.

Friendly welcome and helpful with any questions. Room was comfy and suited our needs well. Good kitchen and outdoor space.
Shower floor could get a bit slippery but apart from that no complaints.

Wow - what a great place. Karthik and Vikash have done a wonderful job with this hostel. It has a great family/community vibe, without being a party hostel. It’s pretty new (as of Feb 2024) so everything is squeaky clean. Beds are clean and comfortable and AC in the AC dorm is great. Also the Wifi is really fast. There’s areas upstairs and downstairs for chilling out and meeting fellow travellers, and the staff are great at organising activities - like surf lessons and kayaking in the mangrove forest. There’s cafes/restaurants very close by, and the main tourist strip on the Varkala cliff is about 10 minutes walk away. Can’t wait to go back.

The coziest hostel with amazing crowd when you're travelling solo. Super diverse and super friendly, should def stay here if you're looking to be part of a community for a bit :)

Vikash and Karthik are running a great hostel. They are super helpful and make everyone feel welcome. They don’t usually allow big groups which means it’s a super chill place where solo / small groups can thrive - and then occasionally there’ll be a party as well so it is a good balance.

Greatest hosts in all of varkala.
I was nearing my end, at the door of death himself, until the hosts of Barefoot single handedly brought me back to life. Once lost in the void, I was born again in Barefoot.
Beds comfy enough to nurse a sick man like me back to full health. Toast nutritious enough to revitalize an entire immune system. Fridge chilly enough to produce the life saving icy water that helped bring down my raging fever.
I wouldn't choose anywhere else to be ill than Barefoot hostel, they will look after you.

If you’re looking for the best hostel in Varkala, look no further.
This place is the ultimate “home away from home” - Karthik and Vikash are the “Masters of Hospitality” and do an incredible job of showing their guests around the very best of Varkala ❤️ Fish Fry lunches, Juicy Bar Chai Guys and Sunsets at Odayam beach to name a few of the highlights from the visit.
The Barefoot is a place you will never want to leave - thanks for the memories, Chettas!! 😘😘
Nothing - it was flawless 😘

Can undoubtedly say this is the best hostel I’ve stayed in. Barefoot truly felt like home for my 8 day stay. Vikash and Karthic’s warm welcome creates a relaxed and sociable vibe - they’re lovely people that will go out of their way to make your time in Varkala as fulfilling as possible. As a solo or in a group - whatever your situation everyone just seems to be happy here. Beds are comfy, Vikash’s Masala Omelette slaps, location wise it’s perfect and WiFi is good for India

Such a fantastic hostel!!! Staff super welcoming and create a lovely atmosphere, getting people together for sunset swims and lunches out, really nice communal areas and shaded spots with hammocks, lovely affordable food if you can't be bothered to take a short walk to any of the nice cheap spots nearby. Just a great hostel with top people. A reason to come back to Varkala!!!

Just had an amazing time at Barefoot Hostel in Varkala! 🏡 The hosts are super welcoming, creating a friendly vibe perfect for solo travelers like me. As a female solo traveler, I felt totally safe and loved the inclusive atmosphere.
🏄♀️ Joined a 5-day surfing course through PaddleCult arranged by the hostel - starting each morning with surfing was a blast! 🌅
Dorm rooms were squeaky clean, exactly as shown in the pics - this new hostel exceeded expectations. 🌟
Chill spots include two hammocks on the ground floor and a terrace for communal seating. Solid Wi-Fi for remote work too! 💼
Overall, Barefoot Hostel exceeded my expectations, and I highly recommend it for solo travelers seeking a safe, friendly, and vibrant atmosphere in Varkala. Can't wait to visit again! 👏
I liked everything. The hosts didn’t disappoint at all. They made sure everything went smoothly during my stay.

Beautiful Kerala style house, nicely restored and converted into a hotel and hostel. Clean, comfortable and pretty bedroom. Very friendly owners.

It's a great new hostel. Karthik and Vikas were superb hosts, specifically making it a great place for solo travellers. Met a bunch of great people. Great location.

The location of the property will not give you a beach view but is very conveniently located near the main road. A 4-5 minute walk through the narrow lanes will land you at the cliff where you can enjoy the view and chill at the numerous options available.
The property managers have great recommendations and make sure you get your money’s worth.
Try asking for mangrove kayaking, toddy shops, local eateries or get a scooter to go around from the property itself and the hosts will give you the best contacts.
Had a great stay here at Barefoot and made a lot of friends . I enjoyed every bit of it.
It’s a new property and I’m
Hoping there will be further improvements in their facilities.

We loved the location of this property, less than 10 minutes from the beach and the busier strip, but still close to rickshaws, small shops and only a 10/15 minute cab from the train station. It’s quiet and easy to sleep at night if you’re a light sleeper.
The hostel has an amazing vibe, it’s chill and sociable, without being a total party zone. Friendly staff and the relatively small nature of this hostel means it feels like a little community and it’s easy to chat with people and hang out. We experienced kind invitations to barbecues, fishing trips and other excursions, which would make it a really great place for solo travellers to meet other people. We were travelling as 3 women, and female staff members and other travellers made it feel like a hostel with a good gender balance.
There’s also a (very reasonably priced!) cafe in the hostel serving maggi, chai etc.
We had a private room on the ground floor, which has a separate entrance and its own en suite bathroom - it’s clean, comfortable and has lots of power sockets and charging points.
The wifi in the hostel is FANTASTIC - like, video call, stream netflix levels of good. From what we experienced the wifi is strong across the hostel with no dark spots.
We stayed here over the christmas period, and we therefore had to pay christmas time prices. Compared to what we would have paid during non-xmas time we felt the price was quite steep for what we experienced.
We also experienced a few power outages whilst staying, which in the intense heat with no A/C is tricky to deal with. Perhaps backup generators could be put in place in the future? The quality of the hostel and immaculate vibes made up for some of this - and if staying during a non-peak period we would struggle to have criticisms!

Very clean new hostel.
Very noisy with loud music on the weekend.
Not cosy.
The alcoholic drinks which got served and the phrase "Don't worry about the money, we all put together" did cost -at the end- as much as in a bar.

Recomiendo 100%

Very beautiful place! Karthik and Vikash are great hosts who make you feel at home immediately and help with everything you need. Rooms and bathrooms are very clean and comfortable. Sitting area is nice to hang out and also comfortable to work remote. I loved that there is a terrace and a garden to hang out. Generally there is a really good vibe in the hostel. The location is very close to the cliff, so everything is in a few minutes walking distance. The best was definitely the very very delicious breakfast!!! The best porridge and the best masala omelet I have ever eaten in my whole life! I am already looking forward to come back and stay for longer :-)))
