Not only was this cottage absolutely beautiful , it was spotlessly clean , incredibly affordable and a wonderful place to stay, all people in the village being so welcoming , the host went above and beyond to accomodate ,they even provided a bottle of wine and other bits on arrival , and quick responses to any questions about the local area , I highly reccomend and am azed at the price

Cottage is situated in a lovely village in Devon, it’s very picturesque and first impressions were good. There was a welcome pack of fruit and wine which was a nice touch. I appreciate it’s an old building which adds to the character but it’s extremely dated inside. Old furniture which is uncomfortable, especially in the living room.
Beds are basic, spring mattresses and overly thick duvets for summer made for an uncomfortable nights sleep. Small double in main bedroom meant it was too much of a squash for 2 adults, so I slept in the spare single in other room.
The nearby church clock chimed on the hour so the first night we barely slept and hastily purchased some earplugs the next day which helped. The curtains are also old and thin so eye mask needed for early morning light.
There was another vehicle in the parking bay outside the cottage so we had to park on a nearby junction which didn't feel very safe.
The wifi was so slow it was barely useable and we couldn't plan our day's activities so we used the nearby pub's free wifi which was much faster.
The nearby Carpenter Arms was the highlight of our stay we had 2 great meals including Fish & Chip Friday. Excellent food and service.
Overall the cottage has great potential but is in need in investment and upgrading of furnishings to make it more comfortable. Let's see if this review stays on Vrbo... only the highest ratings seem to remain up. Last one being Sept 2023...

A wonderful cottage with everything you need for a great stay. Very comfy beds for a great nights sleep. The church bells chime every hour, but even through the night I only heard them if I was awake. The WiFi was VERY slow. Thank you for the welcome pack… fruit/milk/tea & coffee and a bottle of wine (left it for next guests as teetotal.)
Would recommend for a great base to explore the area. Thank you Sue x

Perfect for our visit to spend time with friends who live in the village. Loved the traditional features such as the exposed stone walls and fireplace.
Well equipped kitchen and the tea, coffee, wine, milk and fruit were much appreciated after a long journey. We were lucky with our weather so made good use of the sheltered garden enjoying the tranquility of a very pretty part of the village. We liked the fact we were close to the church with the clock tower that rang out the hour but did need ear plugs during the night.
Great location as very close to the excellent village shop, Carpenters Arms, where we enjoyed a very tasty meal, and Ilsington Hotel. Also did a lovely walk from the village.

Basic cottage with mostly good facilities. Some of the furniture was a little shabby and some basic kitchen equipment was missing (e.g. peeler, sharp knives), but this did not impact on our enjoyment or our holiday. Location in Ilsington Village was perfect, with good local amenities (shop, pub) and easy access to all the Exmoor region has to offer.

As Dutch travelers, we booked this cottage hoping to experience some authentical English lifestyle besides the holiday parks and hotels that we visited during our journey. Our romantic expectations were met and exceeded! The awareness to stay at a place that has been there for ages was magical. To top it, the cottage was decorated with beautiful yet functional furniture and stylish porcelain. We felt priviledged to stay in it. Apart from the fact that not everything was brand new which made it so wonderfully characteristic, the inventory was spick and span. I have an allergy for dog and cat hair, and even though dogs are allowed in the house I have not sneezed once which really is an exception. Everything we could think of was available. We had nice contact with Sue and felt warmly welcomed. We were in the cottage for only 2 nights, had we known how pleasant it is, we would have booked for longer. The impressive natural surrounding is definitely worth it, and starts right in the blooming garden of the cottage! The only downside I can think of during our stay in Ilsington is that I personally got the shivers of the tight, hedge-bordered country roads. Though very beautiful, the prospect of an oncoming vehicle and the necessary dodge in the bushes were terrifying to me. If you have stronger nerves than me to that regard, there should be nothing to stop you from indulging in this authentic holiday treat.

Clean and comfortable bedrooms were much appreciated after long days exploring. We self catered all week and the kitchen had a good range of all the essential equipment. Teenagers happy with the WiFi. The garden was perfect to relax in and for the dog to safely sniff about. Village shop very well stocked including a good range of GF food! Sue kindly supplied a bowl of fruit, milk and a bottle of wine for our arrival.

Had an enjoyable short stay in this old traditional thatched cottage situated next to the church in Ilsington. It has a private garden which was perfect for our 2 dogs. The kitchen has everything required for full self catering and the welcome pack provided was much appreciated. With wooden floors and beams a plenty you do really step back in time. There are 2 cosy bedrooms with the double having a view directly of the church .The church bells ring on the hour every hour even through the night so if you are not used to that I would suggest bringing earplugs.
There is a great little community run shop at the village hall which has a surprisingly comprehensive range of good quality fresh bread, food, drink and household necessities .I would recommend anyone to go on your first day rather than assuming that a big supermarket will be better. The Carpenters pub is also very popular and is a short 2 minute walk away.
From the cottage it is a 5 minute drive to the car park at Hay Tor with miles of glorious walks across Dartmoor at your disposal.
Sue , the owner, was great with communication and even posted on a couple of items that we inadvertently left behind.
All in all an excellent stay.

Stayed in this beautiful cottage at a very stressful time, can only say Sue was the most amazing and accommodating host I have ever come across. Yes it is quirky, and yes it is a work in progress, but spotlessly clean, comfy bed and the most welcome, welcome pack.

Quick and easy right from the start. Sue the owner gave great communication and explanation of the process and gave us confidence in the property and location. The cottage had everything we needed and more, ideal for families or couples. Lovely surroundings and garden. Close to Dartmoor and not too far to the coast for great walks and enjoying the outdoors. Local shop and pub very friendly and great service. WiFi was available but a little hit and miss. Ideal for us as we didn’t want any contact but younger families with children might need better internet/ WiFi. Overall very good stay and good value.

Great little cottage in a great location, however would definitely benefit from some TLC & a good clean. Beds were very comfortable & clean. If you like soft fluffy towels take your own. An owners guide to the local area would be a nice touch also as it was our first time visiting Devon but there was no information in the cottage. Lovely little enclosed garden, if you have a dog! The Carpenters arms a short walk down the road does great food & the owners & locals are very welcoming as are the volunteers that run the local village shop. Great communication with owner & a welcome package was a lovely touch!
