History of the Property:
The Orchard House is part of the founding history of Sidney, BC. It was completed over a 3 year period from 1911-1914. It was the original home to Roy Brethour, who was one of 5 sons given each 100 acres by his Irish settler father, Samuel. The fine Craftsman woodwork and flooring was completed by his brother Edgar, who was a major contractor in Vancouver at the time with a company called Snider & Brethour Construction. The Orchard House is on title just by name at city hall. The home has been used for the last 50 years to supplement a hotel and later as a B&B. It has been featured in films and in home and garden commercials in the 1990s.

Old home, needs some work, especially in bathroom. But stay was fine

Great character property in a really good location. Easy driving to Butchart and the Butterfly pavilion. Lots of good restaurants in walking distance and a good supermarket. Bus into Victoria was a breeze.

Beautiful heritage home in the perfect location. Close to the sea, walking to town, everywhere! Great place!

The home was comfortable and beautiful with so many interesting pieces inside to explore. We loved that it was walking distance to the many lovely shops and restaurants of Sidney!

Beautiful historic home, the beds were really comfortable. It was neat and clean and very welcoming. Walking distance to the water and downtown. The chairs in the dining room and the sofas in the living room are kinda uncomfortable to sit on. Otherwise we had a wonderful stay.

All great except Hot Tub should be fixed so it can be used ortaken off listing.
Historic home is clean, central, roomy and full if character.

The home is a lovely character home. Based on previous reviews we knew the dining room chairs were not comfortable. It will be nice when they are replaced, as they definitely were hard to sit on, but the dining room is so nice to be in, we made them work. We were disappointed that for three adults. we would only get to use two of the bedrooms. After contacting the host we were able to get access to the second floor, but at an additional cost of $75/night. It was worth it, as we each had our own room and bathroom.
If you are sensitive to a musty smell, be cautious, as the home when you first come in does have a smell. The second floor was worse, and I needed to stay away.
We had good communication with the host, including getting more coffee, as there was not much supplied, initially.
Paul, who lives downstairs in the basement, was nice to talk too.
Overall, we really enjoyed our stay. It is a beautiful old home.

We loved our stay at the Orchard House. It had plenty of room for our group of 4 + the family dog. We were able to prepare a full Easter dinner as the kitchen was fully equipped. Overall it was comfortable and cozy with charming heritage touches. The house is in a very quiet neighborhood and is only a couple of blocks from the seawall and downtown Sidney. Airplanes do fly directly overhead but this did not affect us negatively. The hot tub was just a warm temperature. The host did try to solve the issue while we were there but the temperature didn't seem to warm up.
The dining chairs and livingroom furniture are beautiful but have lost their padding. This affects the comfort in those areas.
The listing was confusing with respect to needing all 4 bedrooms. The listed price is for the bedrooms on the main floor only. There are extra charges for each of the two bedrooms upstairs.
There is someone living in the basement suite. He was quiet, nonintrusive, and friendly.
The host was very responsive and accomodating. We enjoyed our stay and would stay again.

This heritage home has beautiful woodwork and a good layout. However, you can't sit on the dining room chairs or living room couches - they are super lumpy and virtually non-functional. An email was sent to the host but not replied to. The house was relatively clean, but the dining table had a sticky film over it, the runner when lifted, showered crumbs everywhere, our clothes got covered in pet hair, and the hot tub was filthy. If you are planning to rent this house, keep in mind the following grocery list: hand soap, dishwasher pucks, toilet paper, and batteries for TV remotes. Bring towels: each guest got one bath towel for a 1-week stay, and 2 guests received a hand towel and several facecloths. There are minimal coffee cups and coasters. The beds were comfortable. The location is good. The hosts can easily turn around these deficiencies to provide a more favourable stay.

Beautiful historical home. Being all 75 and more we enjoyed living in the past but we found the furniture very uncomfortable for all our ailments. The beds were very comfortable. Love the area and great restaurants

The house is loaded with character the rooms are all a good size. The beds were very comfy. The location was close to everything. Sadly the furniture (dining and living room) were very uncomfortable. Even with added outdoor cushions they were still hard and uncomfortable. With some new chairs and couches I would highly recommend this place. *also the hot tub was not working after we arrived but was in the amenity list.

Excellent location and wonderful hosts. Easy check-in and quick to respond to messages. We rented this house for 4 of our crew members while working on a Production and they were all very happy to be in such a beautiful, well-taken care of rental. Will from Scott again. Thank you!

We spent an amazing 2 weeks at Orchard House over Christmas. It wasn’t hard to fall in love with the historic home - it’s a great location. It’s walking distance to the waterfront, parks, and the adorable downtown. The house itself was comfortable, and all the small touches that Scott and Meredith provided, like the set up, Christmas decorations and warm welcome helped to make it feel like home. Scott and Meredith were easy to get a hold of for any questions I had, and we really felt taken care of. The house is close to the airport, but that just provided endless entertainment for the kids, who enjoyed watching them fly overhead. We will definitely recommend this home to anyone looking to stay in the area.

Perfect place for a family vacation; only a few blocks to beach/shopping/a FANTASTIC cheese shop/ great bookstores and lovely road biking ; even cooked a thanksgiving turkey and when we didn’t have a dish for the scallop potatoes, the hosts brought one over ; would stay here again in a heart beat

Scott is a very responsive host. The house was lovely!
Interesting touches and oozing with history; the wood features are beautiful.
Easy walk into downtown Sidney and to the water.
The hot tub was not very hot so we did not use it.

The property is spacious and in an excellent location for the sea and downtown Sidney. It had everything we required for our two week stay.
The historic home had great charm.
The owner was very good to communicate with.

This is a lovely house and very well located. It needs a lot of TLC.
The hot tub was leaking and not hot, so we didn't use it. There is no fire pit and the cushions need to be replaced.
We were there a month during which there was some hot days. It was difficult to create cross ventilation. The dining room chairs need to be repadded . The lighting throughout the first floor is very dim.
There is a renter in the basement. A very nice gentleman, who gave us tips on the area.
The house is in a flight path, so a bit noisy.
The hosts were responsive to our concerns but it would have been nice if they had been proactive in some of the repairs.
6.0 / 10.0
We were disappointed in this stay. Girls getaway, we picked this spot for the outside space, very disappointed, pictures of the space were not even close to what we expected, missing furniture and no fire table at all. ALSO, there is a renter in the basement, we did not expect this, so, we did not use the hot tub. The furniture inside needs new seating, all chairs and couches are sunken in, hard to find a comfortable place to sit. ALSO, needed are some maintenance items to be completed in the house, door knobs falling off, curtain rods coming apart. It is a heritage house and has that charm.
10.0 / 10.0
It took a bit to get used to the airplanes flying in and out.
Didn’t trust the use of hot tub because there was no way to test chemical balance.
8.0 / 10.0
This is a lovely heritage home in a great location. It has everything necessary for a short stay and some useable outdoor space. Indoors, the living room is quite dark and would benefit from some more floor lamps. There is a “caretaker” living in a basement suite under the rental space. While we were there the owner of this VRBO was parking his expansive motor home and truck in the parking space adjacent to the outdoor patio which was advertised as parking space for the VRBO renters. The yard and gardens could also use some care with regular maintenance.

This charming property took us back to memories at our grandparents home. The property was clean. The beds are very comfortable and afforded a great night’s sleep. Lots of channels on the tv. The owners were easy to communicate with. And the porch an added pleasure. It clearly was well suited to us as retirees.

We were 4 ladies on a golf trip and the house was absolutely perfect. Well equipped. Prefect location. We walked into Sydney and down the waterfront to some excellent restaurants. The house is furnished with antiques and beautiful China dishes as well as lots of regular dishes and utensils. We especially appreciated having 4 VERY comfortable beds with soft sheets and fluffy towels. We slept so well. The house is in a quiet community. We will be back! Thank you Scott

Our family had a great time in this lovely old house. Everything was very convenient, clean, and spacious. It was a great location and we could easily walk to most places in Sidney, with short drives everywhere else. If you like old world charm this is the place to go.
4.0 / 10.0
This old house is in a great location but it is run down and there were a number of issues, most importyantly, it was not well cleaned before our arrival.
The cable tv and pvr are shared with the resident in the basement, which caused problems. Internet was good.

I couldn’t ask for more. We enjoy the city, the house, the neighborhood . The house is espectacular. The welcoming downstairs neighbour with a very good suggestions. Our weekend off was espectacular.
Every corner of this house is awesome and beautiful.

Overall, Orchard House is an exceptionally beautiful house that we enjoyed every minute of. There were a couple of cleanliness issues. HOWEVER - as a business owner, I am aware that the owner must at times trust that his staff are reliable. When we spoke with Scott, he was more than approachable, very friendly and attended to anything we mentioned.
Would highly recommend - perfect location for everything in town!

Review of property
This property is close to grocery stores, playground, beach walk and restaurants. It has a very nice outdoor space. You need to be aware that it is 3 blocks from the airport runway and airplanes fly right over the house 24/7 making it hard to sleep .

Great stay
We stayed here for 2 weeks and had a great experience. The house had books, games and of course a tv to entertain us on a rainy day. The basement tenant took us by suprise but he was no disturbance at all (as he has a seperate entrance)!
