About this house rental
WHERE ARE WE GOING?
The name of this house, Wind Dreamin', kinda says it all! The wind is here. If you want to kiteboard, windsurf, sail, or enjoy other water sports, this is the place.
This is a spacious Sound-front home which boasts sunsets and sound views galore. This home is directly on the Pamlico Sound. There are fewer than 70 actual Sound-front homes in the Salvo/Tri-Villages area, this is one of them. Don't be fooled by other advertisements that make a rental appear to be water front. "Sound view", "semi Sound-front", and pictures showing a view of the Sound, are not Sound-front. From many of these homes the water is tantalizingly close and yet you have to drive a mile or more to get to public access to the water.
IMPROVEMENTS IN 2019
New heart pine wood floors and fresh paint in both master bedrooms. Wood floors in most of the house now. Cleaner, and allergens are greatly reduced. New king beds and mattresses in those rooms as well.
WHY CHOOSE WINDDREAMIN?
We get the question all the time, so, yes, there is WIFI, good WIFI.
This home has a private dock and a private walkway that stretch onto the Pamlico Sound. Two ways for kiters, wind surfers, kayakers, and other watermen to enjoy the Pamlico Sound. The backyard of this home is on the Sound. No access issues. Backyard access to the water. Kite, paddle, SUP, windsurf, jet ski, sail, water ski, wake board, all right from the house. Most Soundfront homes on Hatteras have a sea wall, stairs, sea grass, marsh, or other impediments between the home and the Sound. Wind Dreamin offers direct easy access to the water from a semi-sandy tiny beach near the water's edge. Yes, the water sometimes a bit muddy the first few feet, but get out into the Sound any distance and the footing is back to sandy. Arguably we have the best access to the Sound in the Tri-Villages area and one of the best on Hatteras Island. A deck at the end of the dock makes it large enough for the picnic table we have placed, nothing better than a meal over the water at the end of the dock.
THE COMPETITION?
Many of the homes on Hatteras that are Sound front do not have direct access to the Sound. That includes the houses in the Wind Over Waves subdivision, on streets like Otter Way, Turtle Court, and Sand Dollar Court. The houses in Mirlo, which is at the north end of Rodanthe now have an elevated highway built in front of them. It is sad, but the noise a problem, and their views have been decimated. You can paddle under the elevated highway but not kiteboard. Many other homes on the Sound have sea walls, not sill fences, with slippery steps to the water, and problematic access for water sports.
WHERE IS IT AGAIN?
The house is located in the Outer Banks on Hatteras Island. The geography is unique. The house is in the tri-villages area of Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo. The house is located in Salvo, NC, and Hatteras Island becomes very narrow here. The island is only 12 house lots wide. Three to four lots on the west side of NC 12 and 8 or so lots on the east side. That means that you can enjoy the roar of the Atlantic Ocean, huge waves, big dunes, and the best surfing on the East Coast within a 5-7 minute walk from the house. With the house on the Pamlico Sound, and mainland North Carolina 15 miles to the west the sun sets over the water, the most spectacular way to begin an evening. Walk to the Blue Whale for coffee in the morning, enjoy the sunrise over the Atlantic, body surf during the mid-day, walk back to the house, kayak at dusk, and jump in the hot tub to enjoy the sunset, all never more than about 1900 feet from the house. Go to this link for more information on the Outer Banks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Banks.
Hatteras Island is better than the North Beaches area of the Outer Banks. The North Beaches areas of Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Corolla, Duck, and the like offer Home Depot and Lowes, McDonalds and Burger King, Walmart and Kohls. Hatteras Island has hardly any chain stores or chain restaurants, and more than 36 miles of undisturbed national seashore, much of it accessible by four wheel drive vehicle. Hatteras Island offers easy access to the best parts of the Pamlico Sound with endless possibilities for water sports. The Atlantic Ocean beaches on Hatteras Island are wide and flat. In the North Beaches area long sea walls and narrow beaches abound.
WHAT IS THERE ONCE WE ARRIVE?
A convenient entry via a drive up ramp to the first level makes unloading a breeze and provides purpose built handicap accessibility. The first floor offers gorgeous Sound views from the living, dining and kitchen area. There is a large full bath on the first floor that is handicapped accessible. Also on the first floor is a master suite complete with king bed, and an ensuite bath that features a European wet room shower, ideal for a handicapped person as the shower provides roll in access. The other bedroom on this floor offers a queen bed and a twin bed, perfect for just about any configuration, couple, couple with small child, even two guys. The sound front deck on this level offers a hot tub to relax after a hard day of play and boasts awesome sunset views.
Venture upstairs to the spacious second level with a sitting area, a half bath, a full hall bath and the remaining 3 bedrooms. The master suite with king bed, the bunk bedroom (2 pyramid beds which can sleep 4-6 kids) and the final King bedroom all have deck access and views overlooking the Pamlico Sound.
Bed linens and bath towels are provided. Bring or buy beach towels. Please do not bring bath towels to the beach.
There's an enclosed outdoor shower to wash off after a day out on the water. There is a dock to the Sound and a small beach which provides a staging area for water sports including kite boarding, windsurfing, sailing and kayaking. This home provides kite-in/kite-out access to the Sound. Leave your kite gear, kayak, or SUP board at the water's edge, have lunch, go right back out for an afternoon session. If you wish to rent kayaks, Hobie cats, jet skis, SUP boards or even bicycles just walk next door to Hatteras Water Sports, check their website, or call them.
WindDreamin' has a little sandy beach at the edge of the Pamlico Sound. WindDreamin' is 2000 feet or 4/10 of a mile from the Atlantic Ocean beach. Walking time is perhaps 7-8 minutes. The drive is as little as a minute or two. To get to the beach go down Sunset Drive back to NC 12. Go right onto NC 12. Go left onto Dory Road. When Dory Road turns parallel to the beach there is a sandy path that provides public access to the beach. There is a large sand dune go cross on your way to the beach. Senior citizens may find walking on the sand dune challenging.
The kitchen has stainless appliances, granite, and wood floors. The furniture has been upgraded, the bedding is new, the paint is fresh.
This house has a private feel. Pull down the driveway lined with trees and bushes and you feel like you have arrived at your own private little oasis. Kids can play safely on flat spacious grounds, and the water's edge is so gently sloped it feels like a zero-entry swimming pool.
TRIP INSURANCE
We recommend that you purchase trip insurance and to not rely on an owner cancellation policy. Cancellation policies don't help most of the time. We highly recommend the insuremytrip website. We are not affiliated with that company, and make no money from that referral.
We use insuremytrip for our personal travel, great price, and superior customer service. They answer their phone, their CSRs speak English as a first language, and they are knowledgeable. But by far the most important reason to use insuremytrip.com is that they waive the pre-existing condition clause in the policies they sell.
So why is waiver of the pre-ex clause so important? Trip insurance covers you if you or someone in your travelling party, or a close relative gets sick. A pre-existing condition is something that existed at the time of purchase of the coverage. So if your mother is ill with heart disease when you book your vacation, and she goes in the hospital with heart failure 2 days before your trip then most travel insurance companies will reject the claim on the ground of a pre-existing condition, and of course you're long past help from the owner's cancellation policy. The problem is that almost all the events or conditions that could cause you to miss your trip were pre-existing at the time you book your trip. So the pre-ex clause swallows up most of the situations that might occur and routinely denies you coverage. Therefore a waiver of this clause is the single most important aspect of purchasing trip insurance.
The thinking at insuremytrip is that no one books a trip intending to not go, but many of us have a loved one with some pre-existing condition.
So why purchase trip insurance as opposed to relying on the cancellation policy of your travel vendor? Because most causes of not going on vacation are not known until very close in time to departure. Hurricane, power outage, or again, imagine Mom has heart disease. If she is in the hospital a month or two before you go, chances are she is going to be out by the time of your travel. You don't know she is going to have another decline and hospital admission until days before you depart. At that point almost no travel vendor, and certainly no VRBO rental cancellation policies, are going to refund your money.
So, again, we wholeheartedly endorse purchasing trip insurance from insuremytrip. By the way, the foregoing has been composed by the owner of this rental house, who is a lawyer, and has studied this area sufficiently to be well informed on this topic.

Great location! Very convenient access to house since it had a dive up ramp to main floor. This house was perfect for our family. We love the southern towns yhe best. Thank yiu!
2.0 / 5.0
Good things - LOVED being on the sound. Beautiful sunsets on the deck and a quick walk to the surf. The layout of the house was ideal. Enough space for all of us with the main floor being an open floor plan. The bedrooms were all large. Perfect spot on the sound for my kids to hang out and swim.
Bad things - Dirty. When I came in I had to wipe down all the countertops as they had crumbs. Also had to wash a bedspread and the blanket on the couch as they were visibly dirty and smelled. Also bought Fabreeze to try to get the smell out of the rest of the house. Found a live cockroach in the kitchen. The kitchen also had ants. I emailed the property owner who said to buy roach spray. Not my responsibility. The slider to the deck was EXTREMELY hard to open. My 12-year-old couldn’t open it. Also emailed the property owner who said she couldn’t do anything as the slider is heavy for hurricanes….. but we’ve stayed in multiple houses on the ocean with sliders and have never had this problem. The door needs to be replaced - then the problem would be fixed. The bathrooms are all outdated (which I don’t really care) but some renters may care. Yellow stains on the ceilings can be found throughout the house, mold on the floor under some of the windows, laminate and cabinets in the bathrooms bubbled up or peeling in places. It’s a rental and it looks like one. So…. If you’re a clean person, pick somewhere else.

Really enjoyed small town feel south of Nags head. Amazing view and water access. Would definitely stay here again. Kids loved the kayaks

My family has been coming to OBX for almost 20 years. We usually stay in Avon oceanside. This year my step dad lost his leg and is in a wheelchair which was a game changer. This trip was a lot of "new" for us, but this house was perfect. The sound access and deck made it easy to kayak, fish, crab. The hosts are very responsive, even called me when I booked to answer questions and tell me about Salvo, the house and things to do in the area. When we arrived and had a few questions, they again were very quick to respond. Highly recommend this rental for anyone with disability. The ramp to the main level made everyone's unloading convenient!
5.0 / 5.0
The house is advertised as the best handicapped house in the OBX. We concur this is absolutely correct. The ramp up to the main living floor was very convenient for unloading your vehicle. Everything on the main living floor was accessible including the dock. The location is next to Hatteras Watersports where jet skis and kayaks were available for rent - very convenient! The owners were very responsive to any needs/concerns. For sure, the house rates a 5 star! We look forward to going back!

Beautiful property, great views and proximity to ocean, sound, and entertainment (jet ski rental).
4.0 / 5.0
We loved our stay!!! The outdoors were just perfect!!! The beach access was very close and we were able to spend so much time soaking up the OBX sun. There are some updates needed at the house including the outdoor grill and kitchen supplies that are typical with VRBO (trash bags, towels, etc). The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was equipped with serveware and flatware. The hot tub was nice but the wood was extremely slippery when getting out. Overall, our stay was great and we are so appreciative to have had a comfortable place to come home to after long days out in OBX.

Our multigenerational party of 10 had a great time on this vacation. We were pleasantly surprised to find a gas grill instead of the charcoal that was in the description. Everything else was as listed. House is in a great location with beautiful views, water access of the sound and only 7min walk to the ocean side.

Our family really enjoyed our stay in Salvo. Close enough to everything you need. You can walk for ice cream, a convenience store and the beach. Plenty of room for privacy in this home as well. I would recommend!

When we walked in, we found dust, dirt, and scum everywhere in this house. Floors, windows, furniture, bedrooms, and kitchen were dirty. My wife spent the first 3 hours we were there cleaning the kitchen, just so we could feel safe to use the dishes and silverware for eating. The kitchen counters were sticky and dirty. The cleaning fee was definitely a rip off or they should fire the cleaning company. My feeling is that this place is cleaned once a month at the most. The couches were dirty and stained. Covered with hair and had food remnants under them. Another example of a lazy cleaning job. You could see the floor was swept around the couch, but not under it. The bedrooms were not much better. My daughter’s bed had hair on it. The laundry closet was dirty and had animal fecal matter on the floor. It was either mouse or rat poop, which gave us an even worse feeling of staying there. The bedroom my wife and I stayed in was on the other side of laundry room wall. On a couple of mornings, we woke up to the sound of an animal or rodent trying to loudly scratch through the wall. We did not call the owner during our stay as I don’t know how they would have been able to fix all the things that we found without us moving back out and ruining our 4 night vacation. It should have been cleaned before we arrived. If this was the example of their cleaning service before we arrived, what would have been the point of calling to complain.
No, I would not stay here again.

We all had a wonderful time on vacation. The property was in a beautiful location - we enjoyed the sunset each evening from the deck. The house was nice and we took advantage of activities on the sound and really appreciated the fully stocked kitchen. There were a couple of maintenance issues that should probably be addressed - water damage on the ceilings and rough wood on the decks, but those things did not take away from our enjoyment of our vacation. Our biggest recommendation is that the owner install some sort of drapery/blinds in the living room/eating area so that when you are having dinner, no one is blinded by the setting sun. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay!
5.0 / 5.0
The property gave us plenty of space for our family with easy access for my mother who is an amputee in a wheelchair. We enjoyed the deck on the sound, and the beach was just a short drive away to one of the public access sites. We found the walk to the ocean a bit challenging with carrying chairs, blankets, and coolers.

Great week at the beach
Large multi-generational group. Fantastic house for the group - we rented kayaks for the week and enjoyed most of our time on the porch. Fishing from the dock and from kayaks was enjoyed - not much caught but a few were caught and released. We loved watching the paddleboarders and the jet skiers. The sunsets were glorious and the people who had to do the beach were easily dropped off and picked up from the access point. We did end up renting 3 coolers to hold all the drinks so we could keep the fridge for food. We also rented a large rectangular table to put the snacks out.

Learn to KiteBoard
The location was beautiful, the property was exactly as it looked in photos. My son and i went to learn how to KiteBoard and we were truly inspired by this location and its views. The owners were friendly, responsive and helpful. We will definitely, joyfully, rent this house again.

beautiful sunset views, kayak for use
loved staying at this lovely soundfront property. easy access to the main floor for offloading at arrival with the elevated drive. great for anyone with mobility issues if you stay on the main floor with accessible bathrooms, showers etc. second floor had a gorgeous sound view as well from the bedroom decks. this is the best equipped beach kitchen I have ever stayed in for people who love to cook and I've been coming to Hatteras for 20 years. And although we brought our own kayak and small sailboat the extra kayak provided by the host was another unique and generous offering. the soundfront dock at the end of the walkway was also lovely and had a table for dining if you wish to hang out. We plan to be back!

Beautiful property...amazing sunsets
The property was clean and ready early, however, we were not allowed to check in until 400 pm, all the outside amenities that were advertised were locked up and we couldn't get to them, the house is nicely decorated, however, it could use more seating in the living room, the dining room chairs placed in the living room for seating were not comfortable, we would stay here again, hopefully, this can be an annual trip. We loved the pier and fishing was good. The property owners were easily reached and responded promptly.

Great location
The location is awesome! Also loved the ease of loading and unloading of guest vehicles due to the “ramp”. With two elderly grandmas, it helped. The dishwasher didn’t work (the two teens got that job). Needs a little TLC here and there. Again, location is good. Decks afford great access to the sound. Watching the kiteboarders was fun.

We had a great time and the location is hard to beat. Had a few minor issues. Had received a couple of bed linens that was the wrong size (too small). Looked at the information provided in all the emails and tried to contact the property manage company. Phone number was incorrect or reached a head quarter in Georgia. Had to Google to find the correct phone number. Was told we should have the correct sheets delivered, they never came during our stay. The password to the internet was incorrect and had to call to get that sorted out as well. If you update the email information sent out it would have made it easier. But all in all we had a great time and the stay was enjoyable.

great location, beautiful views, house could use some TLC
This home is well located on the Sound. Beautiful views and great spot to fish, crab and boat from private dock. House is spacious. House could use some TLC. The dishwasher did not work and some balcony railings are missing. We missed half our week due to Hurricane Isasis with no refund for days lost.

The location was great. And the sunsets were beautiful every evening. The long dock and easy access to the water was fantastic. While we had a wonderful family vacation the place needs some TLC. For example; the deck was missing some railings and the dishwasher did not work.

Great place to spend to spend a vacation during a pandemic!
House was extremely clean and we could tell additional procedures were in place for COVID 19. The space was great for 2 adults and 6 teenagers. The view was awesome and the kids loved being able to fish, kayak, etc. right off the backyard. My only complaint was that getting to the beach required a long walk over the dunes on very hot sand but the beautiful beach was worth the effort!

Great time in Salvo
We had a wonderful time! House was perfect for my mom who is in a wheelchair- she was able to easily navigate the first floor and we sat and ate down at the picnic table on the pier. Note- the king master on the first floor had a VERY high bed. Way too tall for my mom to be able to get into, but we were able to put her and my dad in the Queen/Twin on the first floor instead. (Both first floor bathrooms are accessible.) Beautiful sunsets, friendly neighbors, the beach a short walk away—we will definitely return!

Perfect Family Vacation!
Wind Dreamin' was perfect for all our family's needs! We hardly ever left the house. Our fishermen fished and crabbed from the private dock from sun up to sun down most days. They caught Spotted Sea Trout, Red Drum, Black Drum and much more! The house was open and spacious and decorated beautifully. We had plenty of room in the kitchen and loved the big family table for all our meals. Hatteras and Bodie lighthouses were just a short morning trip. We thoroughly enjoyed our first trip to the outer banks!

Great time in Salvo
Just got back from a great week in the Outer Banks. The property was exactly as advertised. Our group was 6 adults and 2 young kids and the house was plenty spacious for our needs.
The sound right out the back offered our kids a great place to swim, fish and crab. We also took advantage of the kayak that came with the property. The house was in great shape and the Bedrooms were spacious and comfortable. The drive up ramp to the first level was also extremely convenient for loading/unloading. Overall a really great property in an excellent location. We all had a wonderful time.

Family week
Overall our week was enjoyable. The cleaning staff did not leave until after 6 pm the day we checked in. The sliding back door was very difficult to open and close. The refrigerator kept our food cool but not cold, but nothing spoiled. Drinks were definitely too warm. The house was clean yet cob webs and sand were still present. We saw two rather large cock roaches in the kitchen over the week.
Laundry was adequate. House size and location and amenities were well described and as expected. The kayak was a nice touch that our children enjoyed.
Overall our family had a good week.
Thanks!

Exactly what we wanted
Awesome location right on the sound. Entire family enjoyed the water, hot tub and sunsets. Exceptional location for kiteboarding. Very comfortable rental, exactly as described.

This place fit our needs perfectly.
It fit our needs perfectly - even a place to park the jetski for teaching kiting. We liked that it was not overstuffed with furniture. The car ramp was handy for unloading groceries, etc. The board racks were great. The neighbours (all windsurfers) were generous with their rigging space. The rooms are large. The main bathroom is spacious and handicapped accessible. Would rent again for kiting. Foiling can be done without having to go out very far.

great soundfront location
This is a lovely location to enjoy the sound and the laid -back TriVillages area. The house has unique ramp that allows you to drive up to main floor level — perfect for anyone with mobility concerns. The back covered porch is fantastic — astounding sunsets, usually pleasant breezes, hot tub overlooking the sound. House has a pier and another boardwalk out to waters edge and a small protected beach, with a two person kayak that made it easy to explore the coastline nearby. The house had a kitchen that was well equipped. and comfortable furnishings. The house has nice sense of privacy too. The local area has several small groceries/ convenient marts, a couple of decent eateries and fish market. We walked to Salvo day beach with our dogs each day for a swim on the lovely beach. Ocean access was about 15 minute walk. Island Cruisers one mile away provided us with a jeep to drive out to beach. Appreciated the touchpad key entry that we could customize. Overall, the house exceeded expectations and would recommend it highly.

Nice location but...
The property is located in a lovely area of the Outer Banks. Perfect access to the sound for kayakers, kite surfers and jet skiers. Unfortunately the house itself didn’t meet our expectations. The home would benefit greatly from a little TLC.
In spite of the issues we had with this rental, our family enjoyed our vacation and introduction to the Outer Banks.

Excellent ACCESSIBLE Home
My wife has been wheelchair bound for the last year, so our children discovered this wonderful place in Salvo, NC. This spacious home is on pilings, with parking underneath and stairs to the living area, as with most of the area homes. However, this home ALSO has a ramp to drive a car right up to the living area porch. My wife rolled her wheelchair from the car, onto the porch, and (with just a little help over the exterior door threshold) into the dining/living area. From there, we had a choice of two bedrooms, one with its own roll-in shower. It was wonderful! Although she wasn't able to climb the interior stairs to the upper bedrooms there was no need to. Further, the common rooms (LR, DR, kitchen, bathroom) were huge, and the dinning room table accommodated all 11 of us (one in a high chair; four families altogether), with plenty of wheelchair access to get around. I should add that we made a number of inquiries to the owners prior to our stay, and every one was answered within hours (and we were very pleased with the answers). The house was really comfortable for all of us, we had our own access to the Sound, the sunsets were amazing, the accessibility was exceptional, and this property was a real blessing for all of us!

Great house for multiple-family retreat
Loved the sunsets every night! Especially in the hot tub on the deck! The kids preferred the “surf-side” to the sound and it was more of a 5-10 minute drive than a walk for us (although maybe we just never found the walkspot the owners referred to) but the house was clean and two master suites were perfect for our needs with three other rooms for the kids.
