Then s’mores at the campfire next to the river and the sight of more stars in one night than you’ve likely seen in a lifetime. Leave your 'Sounds of Nature' white noise maker at home, crack the sliding door, and nod off to the sounds of the river just 33 feet from your King Size 'Select Comfort Sleep Number Bed' in the master bedroom. Or choose the 2nd bedroom upstairs, open the slider and nod off to the sounds of the river.
You might be treated to owls hooting the evening away or Coyotes singing you to sleep from "Coyote Gulch." Yes, that's the name of the ravine across the river.

* Large soft snuggly bath towels.

* Themed decorating that highlights local history and the great outdoors of Montana (The Lewis & Clark trail, Nez Perce Indians, Big Sky country, and of course fly fishing.
* Enjoy the themed bedrooms. The second bedroom with the deck overlooking the river has a cowboy and cowgirl theme. The 3rd bedroom has a Montana wildlife theme.

When we started looking for a vacation house as a fly-fishing base in Montana and our Realtor sent us information on The Riverhouse, I literally said, “O-MY-GOD Patty, you have to see this.” It's location, RIGHT ON THE EAST FORK, with its great dry fly fishing... and its close proximity to a half dozen world class rivers and dozens of great creeks blew me away!
Then we found out about Lost Trail Powder Mountain skiing 16 miles away - all of the great wide Montana sized trails (if you're used to skiing the mega resorts with huge crowds you won't believe how much room you have to yourself).
The history... RIGHT HERE! The wildlife, right on the property, in the river, and across the river - and all that the Bitterroot Valley and surrounding mountains have to offer... The minute we drove onto the grounds of The Riverhouse, Patty and I knew this was our second home.
When we bought the Riverhouse I expected to spend a lot of time fishing those other world class rivers and streams close by (see the list below), but after fishing up and down the river right off the deck, I seldom go anywhere else. I’ve fished all of the famous rivers in Montana and scores of creeks, and it doesn’t get any better than up and down the river right here at the Riverhouse.
FISHING - NO HOOT OWL WARM WATER CLOSURES!!!!!
In the 20 years we've owned the Riverhouse the river has never been closed because of warm water. When the water temperature in rivers gets to 73 degrees, The Montana Department of Wildlife closes rivers all day or in the afternoons due to warm water. The fish don't recover well after being caught in warm water. This doesn't happen on the East Fork of the Bitterroot. The elevation at the Riverhouse is 4,000. We're a FREESTONE river. That means there is not a dam above us to warm the water. Even on the hottest summer days the temperature gets into the 40s at night. The water coming to the house comes from even higher and cooler temperatures. The East Fork has not had any "hoot owl" warm water closures in the 20 years that we've owned the house.
NICE COOL NIGHTS FOR SLEEPING ALSO.
Please remember, it is always illegal to keep any cutthroat trout on the East Fork - and to keep this one of the best places to fish in the world, please practice catch and release with all fish.
Remember what Lee Wulff said in 1938, “A good game fish is too valuable to be caught only once. Releasing the fish is your gift to other anglers.”
If you need a fishing guide, just ask us.
NEARBY WORLD-FAMOUS RIVERS AND STREAMS

P.S. I've started mountain biking since we bought the Riverhouse. My favorite ride is to drive to the Crazy Creek campground, 4 miles away, and then bike up a mile or two and fish. It is beyond awesome.

My wife and I stayed at the riverhouse in late August and my daughter and grandson visited with us for 5 days of our 2 week stay.
The pictures tell it all. Beautiful location, great fishing and lots to do in the area. The home is very functional and the kitchen is well equiped for cooking and dining.
Working with the owner was easy and the few minor issues we had were resolved easily.
We hope to return and stay again

Plenty of space, great location far enough off the highway for quiet, well maintained grounds, nicely stocked. We had a minor hiccup but came to terms with the owner to rectify it immediately. We’d definitely stay again.

Absolutely amazing quiet vacation we needed. From Montana but did a staycation this year for our family summer vacation and will definitely book again. Went on the senic drive suggested by owner and seen the big horn sheep about 10miles up. Great communication with owner. It was nice our 14yr old could fish right in front of the deck while I sat and read my book.

Great property in an unbelievable setting. Keith is a great communicator and full of valuable information. We enjoyed all aspects of our stay (fishing, sight seeing, hiking, exploring nearby towns), but most enjoyed relaxing by the river and watching big horn sheep and bald eagles. We will be back.

The Riverhouse cabin is just a spectacular spot on the Bitterroot River. We enjoyed the solitude, stars, wildlife not only here, but in the surrounding area.
Trips to Salmon, ID, the Big Hole Battlefield and the Jackson Hot Spring were some of our adventures this week. The mountain vistas over the passes were gorgeous.
Best spot on the River to relax, read and enjoy nature at its best!

Everything as described. Just sitting on the deck watching the river flow is extremely relaxing. Even better with a drink in hand. Fishing close to the house. Watching the stars. Very comfortable stay. Very hard to leave. Keith will take care of any questions you might have.

As expected, this was a top-notch vacation for everyone in the party. The views all around are outstanding, and there is much to do and see in the local area, though it was really hard to leave the back porch for very long. We appreciate the care and comfort of the house, and we hope to visit again.

We enjoyed our week at river house. The property is indescribable. Solidarity and peace and quit was amazing we had the fishing spot on the entire rover. Our host was amazing they had a ton of landmarks and soggts naked out in a binder to help us fill some extra time. This was a wonderful experience and i would highly recommend this property and host!

This property was comfortable and well equipped, the perfect place for our father and sons getaway. Super location to experience all of what makes this area so special. Scenery, wildlife, hiking and fishing among others. Keith is a very responsive host and great source of information regarding anything about the area. We hope to be back again next year.

We fly fish. This house is right in the middle of outstanding access to great fishing. And that starts a few steps from the back porch to cast into the river! Rainbow, Cut Throat, Brown trout right on the property.
It’s centrally located to fish East and West Fork, Upper Bitterroot, and various creeks. 20 minutes to the quaint Western town of Darby for groceries and good food. The wildlife watching in the area was exceptional. Doe and fawn in front yard every morning, beavers, elk, Big Horn Sheep, so many birds to watch from the deck.
The house is set up for anything you could possibly need. Very clean and extremely comfortable. The owner was terrific helping with our fly fishing questions. We enjoyed the Knotty Nymph, Big Cat, and Little Blue Joint restaurants for dinner.
We ordered a meat/cheese tray, breakfast pastries, and a dessert tray as well as their amazing breads from The Red Rooster Artisan Bakery in Hamilton to make our packed lunches every day. I can’t say enough good things about both their food and customer service. The People’s Food in Darby has really good fried chicken and deli selections for a picnic.
We had a wonderful week. We highly recommend this property. It’s wonderful. Book it right now….

The Riverhouse is in the most beautiful secluded location! The river off the porch is so soothing to listen to. We enjoyed all the areas to fly fish and the small towns that were nearby! Keith was an exceptional host and was there for everything we had questions about. Our 10 year anniversary was celebrated perfectly in this little slice of heaven! We hope to be back and bring our family next time.

Property was comfortable, spacious and had most everything to cook your own meals. Shy on the sundries, in particular soap. Beautiful view of the river. Wish I had brought a finishing pole. Would be a fun spot in the summer.

Out of 5 stars I give this place 10 stars. Owner obviously cares and takes care of this place. Has everything you need to get away from the "noise" of everyday life. Closest enough to get to a town if needed and far enough away to be in the country. Big Horn Sheep on the mountain everyday. Mule deer and occasional White tail deer were seen as well. Anything and Everything that one could ask for or want was at this house. Even a garage to put all our hunting gear to keep out of the elements and keep from freezing. Thank you for making this family trip so memorable!!!! Will cherish this time at this cabin forever.

We always have a great time at the River house and always see different things. This time a bear ran through the yard and splashed through the river. On our last night we saw a couple of October Caddis. Who ever is there this week should have a GREAT time!

Beautiful house in a wonderful location
Keith was very communicative and sent us great check-in instructions with info about the property.
The property was beautiful and had everything we could have hoped for! We loved hanging out in the living room and kitchen area. The fire pit was also very nice to have to enjoy some star gazing in the cold. Driveway is a little tricky to 3-point turn around in - especially with snow hiding it's extents. It's a good chance to practice backing up ;)
The location is unbeatable if you're looking to make daily trips up to Lost Trail Ski area!

Skication on the E Fork of Bitteroot
The River House is great! Our 9 person family had an amazing time at this property. It has scenic river front views and we also enjoyed it being in the heart of Lewis and Clark history.
It is not a large home, but the layout is open and has a good use of space, so we did not feel crowded. The living room had enough seating and space for a board game for all of us..
Good location, as It’s only about 20 min from Lost Trail Ski Resort which has ample open terrain with lots of powder and no lines with a friendly retro vibe. It is an awesome family mountain!
Additionally, this home would be an amazing fishing retreat as the theme of the house attests to— as it definitely has ‘ A River Runs Through it’ feel…. One can picture Brad Pitt in hip waders the just off the back porch ….
We Highly recommend the River House!

We thoroughly enjoyed our week stay for annual Sister Trip away. Very relaxing atmosphere with the river right outside your door to lull away the hectic worries of life. Plenty of day trip adventures to explore the area also. House was clean, kitchen equipped for meal prep and lots of room to just sit and enjoy. Keith was great with communicating and would return again. Thank you for sharing your house with us.
