This place was an amazing find! Set up in the ranch lands near Hawi, it is a side of Hawaii we didn't know existed. The house itself is decorated as a ranch house. The cowboy decor is gorgeous and a lot of fun. There is a huge fireplace, all laid and ready to light, a claw-foot tub and a loft with amazing views. Our favorite spot was on the huge veranda where we could sit and relax and look out at the horses and goats and then on past the fields, all the way to the ocean. On clear days, we could see Maui. The kitchen is well supplied and Chris has provided everything you could need. I highly recommend completing your stay with a horseback ride with Paniolo Adventures on one of the local ranches.
We can't wait to come back :)

We stayed at this property for a few days and it was amazing! It makes you feel like you are in one of those pastoral alpine locations but you'll find it in the middle of Pacific with the incredible ocean view! The house is also on the best scenic drive in Big Island. Will come back to stay definitely!

This was a wonderful place to spend our final three days on the Big Island. Loved having some space for the kids to run around! The location is absolutely beautiful and so peaceful. It’s away from all of the busy resort areas but close enough that you can still do a day at the beach without too long of a drive. The view from the large porch is stunning — perfect sunset-viewing location and great for star gazing. The lodge is clearly well cared for by the owners and we enjoyed the uniqueness of the decor. Chris was also very helpful and generous in sending us an item that my son left behind. Highly recommended!

This beautiful lodge is undoubtedly one of the best places to stay. It is spotless and has absolutely everything you need to make meals. It is rustic, yet modern, the best of both worlds. I'd stay here for morning coffee and the sunsets from the front porch alone.

Beautiful home and surroundings. Absolutely peaceful. No traffic, leaf blowers, loud neighbors, barking dogs. Sitting on the porch watching the sunset and the owners cool animals. Great place to relax and get some rest. Plenty to do close by.
One of the best vrbo’s we have stayed in. Even comes with a decent guitar and a very nice bass ukulele. Thanks to the owners for making this availability.

This property was everything and more. I wasn't sure if we were in Montana or Hawaii ! The views from the deck were amazing. The animals and owner on the property a real bonus. We barbecued in the evening and sat on the porch relaxing for many hours. Everything was fantastic. We will be back. Thank you so much for an amazing stay .

Seven days at a wonderful place overlooking the Pacific, with Maui in the distance. We relaxed on the porch, took in many of the “must sees” in the North Kohala area. So much to see and Chris’ place is a great center point.
We’d go back in an instant.

We enjoyed our stay at Kohala Lodge while there on a business trip. The grounds are beautiful and I adored feeding Pua the Shetland Pony & Nova the spotted horse as well as the goats! The rustic ambiance of the lodge combined with the dense trees & green surroundings had me begin to relax my city mind & feel close to nature. I felt a real positive energy vibration while there & I hope to get to visit again! Thank you Chris Wej for your kind welcome✨

This is the best VRBO we have ever stayed in. So quiet and secluded. Views were just breathtaking. The host, Chris, was out every day taking care of the huge grassy lot and everything was so well manicured. Hope to go back in the near future and take our grown kids.
Thank you Chris!!!

Kohala Lodge is a relaxing, peaceful, mind expanding, inspirational experience with expansive, wonderous views. Chris & Carol are the most gracious, interesting, philosophical hosts I have ever had the privilege to interact with. The place is impeccable! I feel honored and humbled they allowed us to share their little slice of heaven. My husband and I enjoy places off the beaten path, grilling up our own food in the well appointed kitchen, and snuggling up to a cozy fire. Watching the goats and horses graze in the field, while birds dance across the sky, a rainbow appears, with Maui peeking out from the hazy clouds in the distance. Words cannot describe this amazing place! Bring a warm wind breaker, an open mind, and enjoy the countryside experience. Mahalo! Deepest appreciation.

The pictures on the listing do not do justice to the actual accommodations and location.
The views are spectacular, the grounds are meticulously maintained, and the house is clean, well decorated and the beds are super comfortable!
I highly recommend this property to anyone who visits the big islaand!

This house and location was otherworldly. The feeling of a 100-year-old homestead, with all modern amenities, in a serene setting with incredible views of the Pacific and Maui. We could’ve spent the entire time on the huge front porch. And we appreciated Chris leaving us feed to give to the resident horses and goats. The location also gave us great access to everything up and down the northern Kohala coast. We’d absolutely stay again. Mahalo!

Don’t hesitate.
Book your trip if you want a special experience. Stay in a beautifully curated craftsman home with a front porch that overlooks the beauty of the grounds and the ocean. Prepare meals from local fish and produce in a well-stocked kitchen so that you can choose to never leave and eat on that same front porch. Get a taste of what it might be like to actually live on Hawaii.
There are views from every room in the house, the beds are comfortable, the fire in the fireplace was welcome on cold evenings, and the host welcomed us with stories and great hospitality. We are ready to book our return visit.

There’s no photo or glowing 5 star review that can begin to illustrate the irenic “cabin in the tree line” Chis and Carol have created. My wife and I chose to spend second part of our honeymoon on the Big Island, and were lucky enough to stumble upon the Kohala Lodge while researching our accommodations. This is a truly one of a kind, special place. The thoughtfulness and purpose it was designed, built, and furnished with is evident within the first few moments on the property. If there’s availability at the lodge during the dates you’re looking to travel to the Big Island, I would strongly consider discovering the magic of this place for yourself.

This property is lovely, from the home to the setting, from the sassy pony and goats to the incredible hosts Chris and Carol. Pictures simply don't do it justice, nor do all the rave reviews. It's simply perfect.
The home is beautiful, and the second you walk in, you feel at home, not like a guest trespassing in someone else's house. Sitting on the porch and looking across the channel was such a pleasure that it made it hard to leave to go explore other parts of the island! As the sun sets and the stars come out, you feel like you can see every star in the sky all at once. And in the morning, after a quick rain shower, beautiful rainbows come out, and I swear the animals know this and pose under them so you can take a picture!
I can't stress enough how kind, lovely and welcoming the hosts are; in fact, they are one of the best parts of staying here!
Kohala Lodge is a place you want to rate as the best of the best and shout how awesome it is from the rooftops, but you also don't want to leave a review for because you want it to remain your special secret! My highest praise is that I would come back here again and again, and each time I wouldn't want to leave. We came in during our second week on the island, and thought we were already relaxed, but by the end of our first day at the Lodge, we truly were. It's got the magic power to help you totally unwind and find joy in your surroundings.
Thanks for a lovely week and memories that we'll carry with us. We'll be back soon!

Every attention to detail was acknowledged. Such a peaceful slice of heaven. It was more like staying at a friends home vs a Vrbo.

This house has an expansive ocean view and Maui Island view from every living space. The cabin sits on a small hill with a 3 acre green field in the front of it so it is very private. The view is of nature and not other peoples homes. The field is home to goats, horses, a pony, and wild pigs. The front yard provides a 180 degree view of the ocean through the field of animals. The smaller back yard has a pine forest and hammock. The cabin sits far off the main road but is easy to reach. This is a true escape and one of the most beautiful locations on the big island. It’s one of those wrap around porches that you can sit on for hours just watching the animals, geckos, and butterflies. It’s hard to imagine anyone being disappointed with this location or cabin. The owner has created a beautiful western decor with saddles, lassos, and boots. You will have everything you need for a long term stay in the kitchen. I would recommend buying some hot cocoa for sitting on the porch at night. I would also recommend buying groceries to make a country breakfast in the morning. The town of
Hawi is lovely and worth a day of meandering.
I love this cabin and the people who own it are kind and generous for sharing it with us.
Thank You!

It's pretty much impossible to leave the porch...photos can't capture the amazing view. The upstairs loft is set up perfectly to inspire you for some yoga. There's a telescope there too so you can get a closer look at the windmills along the coast--and on a clear day the windmills on maui! Cute lawn ornaments come by for a treat--including pony, and a lovely saanen goat. Loved it all.

We could not be happier with our stay. The property is beautiful and was the perfect way to disconnect. We enjoyed the stunning ocean views as well as the goats and horses we were able to pet each day. I cannot recommend this property enough and hope to be back soon!

The property and house were amazing. We have stayed at homes around the world and this one was just perfect. The views were amazing and the mini farm with the cutest goats and miniature horse were a great bonus.

The lodge was clean and everything was functional. The structure was constructed with sturdy timbers and a open design which made it feel large.
We were there 2 weeks in February for cycling and it was windy with periodic showers.

We’ve been coming to the big island for years and a have stayed at many different places, resort and vrbo, but this place wins. The pictures don’t do it justice. Go check it out for yourself. Chris is a great host, btw.

Kohala Lodge is an absolutely lovely (and very soothing) slice of paradise on the Big Island. The lodge is spotless and gives the feel of a well-appointed cabin plucked from the Rocky Mountains on the mainland and dropped onto the Big Island's green slopes, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The view is unparalleled and the atmosphere could not be more relaxing. If you are looking for a wonderfully unique, tranquil, less-travelled Hawaii experience, look no further. We only wish we could have stayed longer....

We have just stayed at Kohala Lodge on the Big Island in Hawaii and we never wanted to leave. This property won our hearts from the very start. We stepped onto the front porch and stopped to see the view. Grass pastures filled with horses, goats, a miniature pony and beyond the sea with Maui in the distance-this was our first impression and this was just the beginning. The house itself was a jewel. Chris and Carol have built a ranch house-a bow to the ranch lands that surround it. The furniture is comfortable, the kitchen is well equipped, the bed was perfect. There were wonderful touches everywhere .The one thing we felt we needed here was a longer stay. This desire was repeated again and again in the guest book. I absolutely recommend this wonderful place for any couple in need of peace, quiet, and romance. Isn’t this all of us?

A trip to Yellowstone with a view of Maui ;-)
The person who invented the panoramic mode on your phone camera obviously stayed here and got the idea just sitting on the front porch. My wife loved feeding the goat and miniature horse. We got the prime rib and lobster at Minnie’s takeout one night and ate it in the cabin after hiking down to Pololu Valley to work up an appetite - life doesn’t get any better.

This was by far the best home we have ever vacationed in. Words cannot express the beautiful setting...ponies, pet horse & goat, birds, green green green grass & trees, lovely occasional rain and wonderful sunny views of the ocean below and Maui on the horizon. Chris was a wonderful host. He clearly loves his little corner of the island, and the condition of virtually everything reflects this. Absolutely no disappointments. It was difficult to pack up and return home this time. We will return soon.

Magical!
Truly a special place! Thank you Chris for sharing your slice of heaven with us. We had an amazing stay - what a stunning location and beautiful home. We loved everything about this magical place and will definitely be return visitors. The house is beautifully appointed and had everything we needed. And the views from the lanai are breathtaking. We sat out there for hours on end - hard to describe but its stunning. Having access to the wonderful musical instruments to play was a huge plus - we really enjoyed that. Thanks again for sharing this beautiful place with us - it was truly a special experience!
