The property is located in a place that has nice views. The compound was old and run down but I didn’t mind it given it’s an old hotel.
Extremely disappointed and horrified by the last of customer service at this place. For a 3-star hotel, one would expect a little more cleanliness and maintenance done. I’ve been to 2-star hotels much better than this. On top of that, I was served raw food at dinner once and there was hair in my breakfast. When I approached the staff about it, they dismissed me and did not attend to my needs. I still had to pay for the food that could have gotten me ill. It got to a point I didn’t dare to eat my food lest I fell ill in the mountains and God knows what will happen then.

The hotel is in a beautiful spot, with a huge room and private onsen.
Unfortunately this hotel did not meet our expectations. The staff were nice, however had limited knowledge of the area and didn't have any recommendations about where to go or what to do. We wish we were more prepared with food and bus tickets, and perhaps even hired a car. The hotel was extremely quiet that it felt eery, and the interior and deck were run down. There is no food or restaurants nearby, and the provided breakfast, and dinner which you pay extra for, are okay but would become repetitive. The dining experience was awkward as we were the only people in the restaurant with the staff watching us. We ended up leaving this hotel early as we felt uncomfortable staying longer.

Nice views and has an indoor onsen (even though they did not tell me there was an extra charge)
Very unsanitary and bad food hygiene. Served raw chicken meat when I was told it was cooked and no need for further cooking. It was only when I bit into the food and told the waitress of which she said she can help me light the fossil fuel again. I was then dismissed and told by the manager the next day that I had to cook it myself which was definitely a lie as I have eaten such meals countless times and this meal was definitely it a self cook sort of meal. I can deal with old facilities and lack of cleaning of rooms, but the lack of food hygiene and risk of poisoning customers and the lack of care for it really puts the cherry on top.
The location is also not great as the bus that comes to the place only comes 3 times a day, if you miss it you have to walk a bit of distance to another bus stop to take it.

I loved this hotel. Yes it is a bit dated and could do with a paint job etc, but the value for money is phenomenal. Staff were lovely, room was huge, and the onsen in the room was amazing. The onsen is fed straight from an underground spring but you are able to adjust the temperature by adding cold water and it looks straight out to the Alps. Bed was comfortable by Japan standards. The meals provided were also excellent value and thoughtfully prepared. I would love to stay here again.
My only complaint is that there is no proper shower, only the onsen shower which is very low to the ground. I got a connecting bus to the hotel which was 20 minutes late, but I'm glad I waited for it as it is a steep, winding road that you have to walk to get to the hotel if you miss the bus.

The private onsen. The secluded position. The beef dinner was extra good. The english speaking staff. The parking lot. Vending machines and laundry space.
Its an old building with old accommodations. I dont think it is 4 stars hotel at all. I booked a triple room and paid extra for it, and asked the staff after getting to my room what kind of room it was and she said double room, as the triple is the same. Why make me pay extra ??? I feel i have been stolen.
It also said mountain view but it wasnt, it was a forest view.
The reception desk is just a desk on the corridor. They dont put away your shoes, they just stay there for everyone to see... in the room you dont even have water bottle or some local sweets to great you. Never saw that in a 4 stars hotel. You get pajamas that are worned out (fabric is really used, not fine for a 4 stars hotel). In the bathroom you only get shampoo, body soap and conditionner in the onsen space. Nothing else, except qtips. No women amenities, no razor, no body cream, so you end up with dry skin.
The towels were so dry, the fabric wasnt soft at all...
The onsen area was really slippery. The wooden bath itself was mushy, i dont think they clean it really often. They say its because of the hot water but i have been to so many onsens and this was my worst experience.
No about cleanning... it was really dusty. Having allergy issue, it was bad for me. I looked over the furniture and it was all dusty. The ground is covered with rug, and they were so many stains. I didnt feel like walking barefoot on it at all.
They were stains on the paper wall and parts coing off.
Well with everything said above, i really dont think this hotel is worth 4 stars and the money. Its an old hotel that need lots of renovations.

Quiet location with a nice 360deg view from the top of the hotel.
Very big rooms with private onsen.
Nice dinner (with the local Hida beef) and breakfast.
The hotel is quite outdated, and that's a shame since the rooms are sooo big and the location is great.
6.0
Large rooms with own private onsen and beautiful location.
Hotel seemed as if it hadn’t been restored in ages… carpet dirty, rooms a bit dirty, terrace etc.

Very big rooms, with comfy beds.
Old building. Bad smell of the sulphur (that comes from the natural onsen). But because of this smell no one wanted to use the private onsen or the bathroom. And that is one of the reasons why we chose for these rooms. We sprayed the room with perfume, because of this smell.
The Nepalese staff was extreme friendly. But we were the only guests in the hotel. And at night there is no one at the reception, so we really felt like we were alone in an 'abanded mansion'. Breakfast was well presented, but was ok. Dinner was great, but not plentyfull and slightly overpriced. No, we had different expectations and were happy when we left the place.

Room is so big and has a private onsen bath room.
Flooring at the roof Terrace was so much warping.
Looks very bad.

The view and private onsen.
Nakao Kogen was the most expensive property that we visited during our trip to Japan, unfortunately it was also the worst experience we had.
The hotel is extremely dated, a lot of stains on the walls and carpets. The towels are extremely old and hard. Luckily they informed us that there were no restaurants near the hotel so we stocked up at the Family Mart in Takayama. There were no plates or cutlery to eat our food with and the mircowave in the lobby was extremely dirty and rusted.
The mountain view, private onsen and staff are good and polite. Please also be aware that you will be paying onsen tax. The place has a lot of potential just needs a lot of TLC.

Perfect location to wind down after traveling through Japan. Location is kind of remote but can be accessed by public transport. The bus stop in front of the hotel only has few busses per day. Really kind staff. Rooms are super spacious and equipped with a private onsen and two big beds. Since it's vulcanic water you smell the sulphur but you get used to that.
Food was good but not really spectacular in my opinion.

We enjoyed the private indoor and outdoor Onsen. The multi courses dinner and breakfast were exceptional!

We loved our stay. The facilities were great and there was more than enough. The Japanese breakfast was very good for our taste.
Everything was a bit dated/old fashioned.

beautiful property, the breakfast and especially dinner is really good! highly recommend the beef set menu. ( make sure to let the hotel know prior to your stay, you can’t order on the day itself)
private onsen is awesome, view from it is very pretty. rooms is really huge
location wise it’s quite far, no hand towels in the room, we requested extra pillows but didn’t go through, there’s no nearby shops or attraction around the hotel

Located in a beautiful area. Hotel staff let us check in early.
Tatami flooring in all main areas
Dinner was good and plentiful.
Breakfast was large. We like Japanese breakfast but just to say no other option
We were the only guests in the hotel! The lights were off most of the time. Our room was right by reception when it would have been nice to have been given a room on the next floor or at least further down the corridor.
The rooms are large but a bit tired
We were left alone in the hotel with the doors locked from 8.30pm
Slippers provided not suitable for European feet and look well worn
7.0
the onsen in your room was the best about the hotel
the smell in the room and hotel, the carpets( little surety) and the
meals were just ok,

Loved the location, the staff were friendly, the onsen in the room was a real treat. So quiet and relaxing looking out at the mountains in the distance. I was there for the fly fishing and the river was really close by (5 minutes by car). The included breakfast was excellent (Japanese-style one day, western the next), and the optional dinners were also good value for money and delicious.
