Great location and beautiful property on our way to Tortuguero! Herbie was such a great host. Traveled with four boys who loved it. Loved the location, the cabins, the breakfast, the animals (which Herbie made sure to let us know where they were and what they sounded like) swimming in the swimming holes, the sound of nature around you at night, and a kind and generous host!

Beautiful location in the rain forest. Herbie was a great accommodating host and a great cook! Also there was a cute dog and cat. Slept to the sound of the river and rain. We absolutely loved our stay!

It was totally unique experience! Meeting the owner, eating home made dinner, wishing that we can stay longer to explore amazing gardens.
Thank you!

This place is truly a jungle garden oasis. Listening to the Rio Blanco river as you sleep was the favorite part of my stay. I would definitely refer anyone who wants a nice reprieve away from the hustle n bustle of life to visit Casa Rio Blanco Eco Friendly B & B.
Herbie was available at any time and also awesome to talk to. He is a wealth of knowledge in regards to the property as well as the surrounding areas.

The location beautiful. So very peaceful, and totally surrounded by nature. The breakfast was lovely and the perfect amount to start the day. Herbie was so very helpful , with info on his local are, as well as an excellent source of information, on all things Costa Rican, which was great for us, as we are in process of setting up life in CR. He is also a great cook, so we ate both nights we stayed, with him Mmmmmmmm! See you again for sure ...Ali, and Scott

Cosy b&b, ideal for a stop-over on the way to the Caribbean coast. Owner very kind, cooked a very nice dinner and served a great breakfast.
We had been assigned a different room from the one booked. Slightly pricey, but the owner's kindness makes it up for it 😀

great location as stop off for drive from San Jose to Caribbean coast.

It's a small place, only a few cabins so it's quiet. The cabins are all wood, only screens rather than windows so you can hear the sounds of nature all around. The river provides a constant pleasant white noise. The porch is large and so close to large trees. We saw white faced monkeys just a little ways from our cabin.
Decor was dated. Could be freshened up a little.

We expected nothing and got: everything! Herbie's cabins and house are BEAUTIFUL, welcoming and comfortable! We only spent one night on the way up north but actually would have loved to stay longer! The food was delicious and Herbie was the nicest host. Such an unexpected gem in Guapiles, we would love to go back one day!
Nothing at all :)

After spending the week in Puerto Viejo we made the long (5 hours) drive back to San Jose but wanted to break the trip up so we found Casa Rio Blanco . From the moment you meet Herbie you will have a wonderful stay. He’s a fantastic host, great cook , and knows his country very well if you’re needing any help organizing your stay in Costa Rica. We just enjoyed his company and chats . Our room was big and it was the most comfortable bed I had our entire trip! It’s nice to hear the rain and river as you fall asleep .
Nothing we had a great stay!

Harvey - the south african/ dutch owner and his lovely dog Maxima and his lovely cat (forgot his name) were brilliant. He just cooked us dinner after a long and tiring road (6 hours) which was amazing! We had bolognese pasta and fresh veggies cooked (15 USD). The breakfast is fresh made (omelette with spinach) , fruits and coffee or tea. The wooden house is super cool as you can hear the river all night and crickets singing till morning when you wake up with the sound of the jungle. Harvey is very friendly , fun and nice. We talked a lot at dinner and breakfast and it was lovely to have met him ❤️ . If you want water rafting he’s the man to ask. Thank you for the lovely stay!

Simple but clean and nice garden and room
No wine available; intercontinental food
Very loud other guests; but still recommended as a stop between 2 destinations

Herbie was the perfect host along with the cat and a beautiful young Malinois Maxima. It is the perfect place to stay when traveling between San Jose and Puerto Viejo. More importantly it's a central location if you want to go rafting, zip lining and hiking in the national park nearby.
After leaving there, at Herbie's suggestion, we went to LA paz Botanica gardens and waterfalls, which was a beautiful drive to the very top of the mountains.
Back to the accommodations. While it's described as rustic I was surprised by how how perfect it was. The gardens , cabins and main building was immaculately Clean. While there was no TV ( who cares about that anymore? We all have our own electronic devices) there were numerous outlets and WIFI in the main area. The water in the shower was lovely and warm and the wood work in the cabins was beautiful. No AC but a strong fan and screens everywhere so you can get a good cross breeze. I actually put an extra t shirt on in the middle of the night. The sound of the rain on the roof was perfect and then there is the sound of the rushing River water. Perfect. I just wish I could have stayed longer and spent another night.
I almost forgot. Don't hesitate about asking for dinner it's a small fee and the dinner was copious (pasta bolognese a salad, cauliflower and carrots! and even included fresh fruit for dessert). The breakfast was equally as good if not better, strong coffee and an omelet with fresh fruit and toast. The meals were the tastiest I had on my trip.
The only thing that may be daunting to some is the unpaved road off the highway to the location. If you have been in any of the central American countries you will find the road normal and easy to navigate. If you don't have much experience just breathe and drive slowly and trust your navigation system, you'll be just fine.

A really lovely place. Remote, nice home cooked food and just super chill. We stayed for just a night to break up a long drive, and were pleasantly surprised. Thanks! :)
