If you’re looking to unwind and rejuvenate, this tranquil beachfront getaway, with 200 feet of private soft sand beach, could be just the place for you. The home is located in a peaceful, low-density area with lots of open space teeming with birds and wildlife. We enjoy some of the best bird-watching on the Eastern Seaboard so if you forget your binoculars don’t worry, we have a pair ready for you. Eagles, osprey, blue herons, pelicans, and seagulls fishing in the wide-open waters or feeding on the sandflats are just some of the birds you may encounter each day. From time to time, you will even spot schools of dolphin swimming just offshore. Our home is located in a “Dark Skies” area so evening moon and nightly stargazing are incredible. As are the spectacular nightly sunsets.
The large back deck overlooking the Chesapeake Bay is the perfect area for alfresco dining, lingering over a morning cup of coffee, or relaxing with an evening cocktail. For quiet, private time there is a cozy library with a gas fireplace, a peaceful upstairs sitting area, or lower level patio seating to take advantage of golden sunshine, blue skies, and pristine, sparkling water views.
During the summer, rental companies are available to deliver paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes so that you can enjoy your favorite watersports. Comfortable mattresses, soft, high-end sheets, and plush towels are provided. We’ve tried to think of everything we would want to have in a dream vacation getaway and have done our best to provide it for you.
When you do want to visit restaurants, shopping, and galleries they are just a short drive away. The 2 largest historic towns on the Shore, Cape Charles & Onancock are about an equal distance away, about 20 – 30 minutes. This was a great place to stay as a family (7 adults and 4 kids)! We would definitely consider a return trip! The water access and sunsets were so good.
Communication with property manager was great.
(There has been a little remodeling in the house since the pictures were taken. I wish these were captured better in the listing, but it wasn't a deal breaker.)
Tips for prospective guests:
-Bring water shoes.
-Low tides are the best.
-We rented paddle boards and kayaks from Poseidon 45min away in Cape Charles and would recommend.
-Bring a tube float to relax in.
-No cell coverage, but house wifi worked well.
-House is well-stocked (kitchen, games, beach stuff).

The house was beautiful with so much space for all 10 of us to spread out. We truly appreciated having beach chairs, umbrellas and beach towels available for our use. We thoroughly enjoyed the sand bar and had a very pleasant and relaxing vacation. (Accuracy of listing is understandably difficult with the ongoing improvements, i.e. 6th bedroom, so no air hockey and no bunk beds)

Pleased that another shower was added.

The rental home was absolutely beautiful! There was plenty of room for everyone and the amenities were GREAT!
There were only a few things that were a disappointment. One was a tick we found upon our arrival on one of the beds. During our stay four family members ended up getting bit by ticks.🙁 The other disappointment was the seaweed bed covering a large oyster shell bed. Two family members cut their feet on the oyster shells. Swim shoes are a definite MUST!! Lastly, the beach area was much smaller than it appeared in the photos. The natural lowtide sandbar areas, however, were fantastic for the parents and the children to spend hours of sun and fun! All in all, our family had a wonderful vacation. I highly recommend this rental home.

Our family enjoyed our stay at The Sandcastle. We were able to relax and take advantage of the beautiful views, sunsets and hanging out in our own space. The only surprise was that our neighbors, who couldn't have been nicer were closer to us than we expected. It is hard to see the proximity of other homes on the site, but overall, we had a wonderful time.

We had another great stay at this property! There have been some improvements made since last time which was great and the realtors took care of any issues immediately.

This home is simply amazing. Very clean. Comfy beds. Sand bars are great for kids and adults! More than enough room for our large familt! Will def stay again when we come back to the area!

A perfect place to chill out
All of us (three generations) had a very enjoyable time together. We loved being on the Chesapeake Bay- brought kayaks, rented paddle boards. The sunsets are amazing.

Already booked it again
We enjoyed a wonderful week! Quiet and peaceful. Woodpecker nests in the yard. Heron, egret, osprey, eagles…always around. We fished, we crabbed, we enjoyed the breeze, we ate - and ate some more. Looking forward to coming back next year.

Reviewer Comments:
Great home to get away from it all. Amenities are as described, views are exceptional. This is not our first time staying with Blue Heron Realty properties... they are easy to do business with, attentive and go above / beyond to ensure their guests have a great time. Highly recommend the Eastern Shore as a place to take your family and reconnect.

wonderful relaxing time
The location is terrific. Quiet and tucked away, with beautiful view of the Bay, birds, sun, ships, and stars. The house is spacious and clean. That the master bedroom is on main level was useful to us. Note, BR2 has tub but no shower, so the hallway bath is the only shower on level 2. The kitchen is well stocked with kitchenware. We experience a couple of issues (1) the oven was unusable, the property manager came over took a look and provided a replacement electric toaster oven (large) which was useful for warming stuff but not adequate as a real oven. (2) The gas grill on the deck did not ignite. (3) Network bandwidth is very low, and the wifi range does not cover the whole house, also the cell phone coverage in this location is poor - all together rendered this location a great place to unplug and unwind. Some of us attempting to work remotely from here found the network service inadequate. Overall, a very enjoyable stay, terrific place to slow down and relax.

We really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful house and being right beside the water. When the tide was low we enjoyed walking on the sandy beach & paddling. It was so great that our dog was able to enjoy the small private beach too. The house is really well decorated with lots of comfortable seating areas and the kitchen is very well equipped. The main sitting room with huge window looking out onto the bay is particularly appealing. As previous guests mentioned, the dining table only sits 6-8 but we just added a small extra square table to seat nine of us. There’s also a kitchen table but it’s taller so not suitable to extend the dining room seating. There are only 2 showers but the third bathroom does have a bath and there seemed to be plenty hot water.
Also to note is that there really isn’t anything to visit nearby so this house would better suit families and friends who are just happy to chill out and enjoy being away from everything. Cape Charles is a nice place but it’s a 35 minute drive.

Our family got together for New Years and really enjoyed the house. The owner was very helpful and welcoming. The only downsides was lack of cell service and only 2 showers in the house. Would recommend to anyone looking for time away from home.

Disappointed fireplace and air hockey not working HOWEVER owner EXTREMELY responsive to any questions/issues. Family Thanksgiving week was wonderful. Beautiful sunsets, star gazing, daily eagle sightings, peaceful beach walks, bicycle rides (brought our own bikes).

Wonderful!
I visited this home with my extended family including a 3yo and 1yo and two dogs. The property is wonderful! Like other reviewers, I recommend water shoes to get through the oysters and eel grass, but once you get out to the sandbar the sand is clean and soft. The water was shallow and calm—perfect for the kids. The owners were great. We had an issue with the grill and they brought over a new one the same day! They were very attentive to any issues we brought to their attention. One thing to note is that there is one room (the front center with rounded windows) that does not have any air vents. The master bedroom also didn’t have great airflow but there were box fans available in a few of the closets that helped. I also wish there was a larger dining table. The home sleeps 12 but the table only seats 6. There are two folding chairs and a high chair, so this year we were able to squeeze everyone in but that’s one update I would recommend. Other than that, it’s a great place. We’ve already rebooked for next year.

1st time in 25 years we did not go to OBX. Nice change to have the kids in peaceful water and quiet setting

Beautiful well equipped home with an exceptional location for our family, ages 1 to 73. Swimming, kayaking and fishing. It was just perfect. We hope to return again.

The location is lovely (outstanding sunsets). The kitchen was smaller than it appeared in the pictures, but was quite serviceable for our resident chef. Some maintenance issues that we were able to work around (no working lights in the laundry room, inoperative fire place, broken/missing toilet paper holder and hot water that was excessively hot).
The house was very clean and stocked with sufficient towels, beach towels, beach chairs and kitchen items. the furnishings and decorations were very good (albeit a little too tempting for an active and curious 2 year old).
Overall, the seven of us that spent the week there enjoyed our stay immensely.

Our family had an amazing stay at Sandcastle!! This house is right on the Chesapeake Bay and has huge windows to appreciate the view in just about every room.
The house provides just about everything you need....stocked kitchen, lots of space, decks looking out over the bay, beach chairs and umbrellas.....and private beach!! We spent many hours out on the flats (sandbar).
The neighbors were very friendly....they chatted with us and even stopped to check on my mother-in-law when she was out for a walk on a hot day.
Montaigne and the folks at Blue Heron were fantastic to work with. They responded to every concern and very quickly.
We hope to come back again and again!!

Post Covid family reunion
Location location location. This was the most beautiful spot to gather my family for a holiday vacation together. The house had so many wonderful features and its location right on the water mad it easy for us to go back-and-forth throughout the day. The water was warm. The tall pine trees in the yard gave shade for those who wanted to stay out of the sun. The house came with ample beach chairs, umbrellas, beach towels etc.We are already talking about booking it again!

I have to say that this was one of the most relaxing beach vacations I've had. The scenery and view were amazing! It was very quiet and very peaceful! I recommend renting kayaks and paddle boards to explore the area. The sand bar was a great place to hang out. We paddled over beach chairs and a cooler, and enjoyed the beauty., including different sunsets every day. It's very shallow in spots, great place for small children. I do recommend having water shoes, the area in front of the sand bar is very grassy with rocks. Once past the sand bar, it's beautiful with soft sand. We also went into Cape Charles and rented jet ski's from Poseidon Water Sports, same place we rented the paddle boards and kayaks from, they were great. Another fun outing was the Chatham Winery. If you are looking for a relaxing, chill vacation this is the place. It's not your typical crowded, touristy beach town which I really liked.
We had a couple of issues when we got there, but Doug was very responsive and handled everything really quick. We were all very sad to leave and we would definitely love to go back.

If you are considering renting this property, I strongly encourage you to read this entire review as there may be some “dealbreakers” here. I’ll start by saying that we had a fantastic time and really enjoyed our trip, but there were some concerns.
Cons:
1. The neighbors are not friendly, and they are vocal. This rental property is located in a remote area with locals who live there year round. They are clearly unhappy that this home is a rental property and they will complain. This did not bother me, however it made some members of our party very uncomfortable.
2. One of the bedrooms upstairs does not appear to have a vent for the air conditioning, meaning it gets to be *extremely* hot. As in, unusable. The air conditioning unit that serves the third floor of the house on the side where the kids room is, has a mind of its own. We could not figure out how to get it working consistently.
3. There is only one shower upstairs. This shower serves 4 bedrooms. Yikes.
4. Little to no cell service. This could be a pro or a con depending on your group.
5. The stairs. If anyone in your group has mobility issues, this is NOT the house for you. There are steep stairs all throughout this home, including stairs to get to the beach.
6. The landscaping around the home is..uh...lacking. It’s mostly weeds. This doesn’t bother me, but if you are someone who values well-kept grounds and a groomed aesthetic, keep looking.
7. There is no way to block the sun from getting into the bedrooms. Although beautiful, the windows do not have drapes of any kind so the light comes streaming in bright and early and will stay that way until sundown. If you enjoy sleeping in, bring a sleep mask. If your kid sleeps in blackout conditions at home this will be difficult (you cannot put temporary blackout curtains on these windows because they are so high off the floor)
Pros:
1. The rental agent was fantastic to work with.
2. The water, beach, view...it’s all amazing. So peaceful. And especially great for young kids.
3. The house is well stocked with kitchen supplies, many of which appear to be brand new.
4. The beds are very comfortable, and there are several plush blankets spread out throughout the house.
5. The house was very clean!
Overall we really enjoyed our stay. Will we rent again? I’d say it’s a solid “maybe”.

Wonderful stay on the bay
We appreciated the beauty, design and location of the house. We loved how close it was to the private beach and water, and thoroughly enjoyed the perfect views from the back deck and even from inside the house. The house was clean, spacious, and provided us a very comfortable stay. We cooked every night, and were pleasantly surprised by the quality and quantity of all the kitchen cookware and cooking accessories- this was a huge relief and made cooking in each night easy. The beach was beautiful, quiet, and perfectly clean. Most of the days at low tide we would walk out to the sandbar with our dogs, which they absolutely loved (I would recommend bringing water/boat shoes for the walk out). Would definitely recommend and we will certainly consider staying here again for future family vacations.
