About this apartment rental
A beautiful property, with established "Premier Hosts" - pictures have been updated!
Enjoy a 2 bedroom, 2 bath barndominium apartment on 107 acres of pristine Chihuahuan Desert wilderness, nestled in a valley between awe-inspiring mountains. Witness the most amazing sunrises, sunsets and star shows anywhere! See the Milky Way in all it's glory in our "dark skies" territory and from the brand new 6-person hot tub ("hot" in the winter - a "cooling pool" in the summer - you adjust the temperature to meet your preferences).
This location (45 min from BBNP) allows the enjoyment of a huge assortment of wildlife viewing - migratory birds of all colors, shapes and forms, dove, quail, ravens, red-tail hawks, mule deer, javelina, rabbits, fox, wolves, and even an occasional black bear, bobcat or mountain lion. In addition to the wildlife, visitors have enjoyed marveling at the wide and diverse array of plant and cactus life!
Another bonus is that this location provides miles of primitive walking/hiking/biking/ATV opportunities. Be sure and inquire about special excursions offered by the hosts.
If visitors choose to fly-in, to the nearby landing strip, the hosts will gladly assist with transportation (please inquire ahead-of-time).
The apartment is rustically furnished with brand new custom ordered furnishings, including queen-size beds/mattresses. Also, found in the apartment is a TV in each bedroom and living room (with Dish Network), on-site Fiber Optic 5G WIFI, outside lounging furniture on a viewing deck as well as on the ground floor patio. A full-size stove/oven, refrigerator, counter-top ice maker, microwave, filtered drinking water, coffee pot, dishes, pots & pans, linens, towels, washer & dryer (bring your own laundry soap) and an outdoor gas grill are all provided. Tabletop heater and a fire pit are also available to ensure the enjoyment of the outdoors, even on cooler evenings. The apartment comes equipped with a sophisticated mini-split heating and air conditioning system as well as a back-up generator for any unexpected power outage.
The apartment, currently, sleeps 4 but can sleep 6 with the use of 2 new, large, heavy-duty cots with thick cot mattresses, upon request. In addition, if additional space is needed for additional guests, the hosts' original property is also available near by - an RV that can accommodate 4 more guests (please inquire).
The hosts live near, but a bit removed, on the acreage, and are readily available for information/advice and/or socialization (previous guests have remarked how much they enjoyed "happy hour" on the porch with the hosts!) and if any need arises.
The hosts continue to take great pains to insure that our facilities meet and exceed recommended sanitation guidelines.
Please be aware that this is a non-smoking property (due to allergies - both inside and outside) and that no pets are allowed (for your pet's safety). There is a $250 fine for the violation of either of these policies.
Absolutely no hunting or discharge of firearms allowed.
Area attractions include but are not limited to: Big Bend National Park (be sure and see the Chisos Basin, the Boquillas Overlook, the Hot Springs, the Dinosaur Exhibit, Santa Elena Canyon and river tours among others), Big Band Ranch State Park (be sure and enjoy the Hoo Doo's and Closed Canyon Trails), the Terlingua Ghost Town (enjoy dinner at the famous Starlight Theatre, LaKiva, DB's Rustic Iron BarBQ or Long Draw Pizza restaurants), the Lajitas Golf Resort (enjoy a prickly pear margarita at the Thirsty Goat Saloon), the "River Road" following alongside the Rio Grande River (Highway 170 - considered one of the top 10 scenic drives in America) and the casual and quaint, local Bad Rabbit cafe' located just 1 mile away.
Also, and closer to home you'll find the Terlingua Ranch Headquarters office (they sell ice, snacks and trinkets), the crystal clear, cool and refreshing swimming pool and bath house.

Took our family to Terlingua for a quick 4 day trip. Very nice location and stay. Nice to disconnect from the busy life and stay in the middle of nowhere. Relaxing stay, everything was very clean and neat.

We loved our stay at casita de chiles. It was private, away from the main town and great to enjoy the quiet. Lots of birds, rabbits, squirrels and foxes. The stay has a lovely patio to enjoy the wildlife and sunset. Mark and Michelle welcomed us on checkin and are lovely hosts.
The stay is 45-50 min from Big bend; just something to keep in mind if one is planning a sunrise at the park.

We loved this property and it's location within the dark skies area. It was a great place to getaway to relax for the weekend.

We really loved our stay at this property. The mountain view and wildlife were fantastic and my kids loved the hot tub. Also, if you go and want to see the night sky, be sure to check the moon for your dates. You want to stay during a new moon like we did. The night sky did not disappoint. It did take us over an hour to get to the front gate of Big Bend though because of the speed we had to drive down the dirt road. If you have a more rough and tumble vehicle though, that probably won’t bother you.

Mark and Michelle thanked us for our service in many ways and allowed us to fully enjoy our father daughter time together. Michelle shook my hand and provided a guided welcome to their well furnished, comfortable and restful barndominium. Highly recommend staying here if you enjoy peace and quiet and relaxing. A++

Let me say, I have stayed in plenty of these and this has by far been my favorite. Do not be scared by the distance between the house and Big Bend. The drive is gorgeous and truly most of the length comes from driving within the park itself.
The amenities are awesome, the wildlife and scenery from the windows and outdoor patio areas are amazing as well. Mark and Michelle gave my friends and I a truly once and a lifetime experience.
If you’re thinking about going to Big Bend, stay here!

Our group of 6 chose to stay at Mark's place to be near the BBNP entrance, but that didn't work out quite right for us. Location is ~18 miles down a narrow, winding, lonely road off the main hwy. Then about another 5 miles of dirt road to get to Casa de Chiles. Mark greeted us as we drove up in the early evening. Communication was great and his place is quite clean with some super comfortable beds.
Not the best place for basecamp, but a good choice if you're looking to stay somewhere and disconnect for a few days. Would consider going back!

Clean, well-stocked, decorated so nicely, beautiful views of area and wildlife, the hosts are wonderful people who gave us a great excursion up Christmas Mountain. It was such a pleasure to stay here and get to meet Mark and Michelle! We also enjoyed visiting Terlingua Ranch, Terlingua, and the Big Bend National Park. Would highly recommend this Barndominum for a stay! Enjoyed nighttime sky and hot tub! Such a nice patio and balcony area! Excellent stay! Thank you!

Everything was as advertised in the listing. Owners very friendly and great resource for information on park and surrounding area.

This is a very pleasant VRBO on the Terlingua Ranch property. It’s a little hard to get to, but that’s part of the appeal. The hosts are wonderful. There is wildlife (deer, birds and fox) visible from the porch or hot tub. The Terlingua Lodge and Bad Rabbit Cafe are only about a mile away. The skies are super dark and the stars are amazing.

This place was way out in the dessert. Great peace and quiet, star viewing, wlld life... They provided everything you could possibly need and then some. Bring your own food to cook and a flashlight. Charming cabin decor. Second floor- you will need to be able to manage stairs with your luggage. Owners text you right before check-in with directions, which you will need. Make sure they have a number that can be texted. I'm a low tech (old fashioned phone) person and had difficulty. Also, try and remember to put everything back exactly were it was. Wished we had more time to relax here. I'd definitely stay again, if we get another chance to be in the area.

To say the barndominium was remote is an understatement. Far from noise and light pollution. Owner was great communicator. It was very HOT (can you say 107) when we stayed there and the cooling could not keep
up. But beds were comfy and bedrooms cooled down nicely. The stars were amazing. We saw grey fox, deer, quail and many lovely birds. There were a few little quirks but over all nice accommodations .

We had a great stay with Mark and Michelle. The property had everything we needed, all comforts of home! Its located a bit away from the National Park but they do state this in the description, plus they sent step by step directions to get there. Would most definitely stay again if we are ever back in the area. Thanks for everything! See you next time!

Our family of five very much enjoyed our stay at the barndominium. It was exactly as expected. Very clean throughout, which seems like it would be very hard to do with how dusty it can get in SW Texas.
With eventually realizing how scarce water was down here, it felt like a luxury to be able to take a shower every night and have a hot tub to enjoy!
The hosts were very welcoming upon our arrival.
Our three boys loved the wildlife right outside our deck. It was the highlight of our trip for them to see javelinas on our last night.
We would definitely stay here again and would be surprised if someone could find another option in the Big Bend area that could top what the barndo offers.

This house was perfect for our family of 4. The wildlife, star gazing, and landscape were just what we were looking for! The hosts are very welcoming and made sure our kids got the best experience in wildlife viewing by putting food out for the deer and fox that inhabit the valley. The patio that has the hot tube has many sitting areas that make it very enjoyable to eat outside, and use it for stargazing at night. Would rent again!

It was beautiful. Loved sitting on the porch and watching the wildlife. Enjoyed being close to big bend. I loved how you decorated the place and the flag quilt in the bedroom was beautiful. We picked the best place to stay

Hosts are close by and very helpful- made great recommendations! Enjoyed watching the mule deer, foxes and javalenas come close to eat. The hot tub with a mountain view was nice after a long day hiking. Beds were super comfy. We enjoyed our stay and had everything we needed! Highly recommend this place and would stay again.

The place was beyond safe, clean, and comfortable. It was roomy, updated, had cell service and 3 large tv's with satellite. It had all the little thoughtful items that count in a week long stay. The owners were gracious, knowledgeable, and available while allowing privacy and separation. Great little restaurant, laundry and pool on shared property. Lots of great wildlife, heaters, fire pit around the barndominium. Comfortable outside space/balcony. Snacks and water bottles on arrival. Suggestions and recommendations for near businesses of interest in a folder. They also offer excursions if interested. I couldn't possibly list every detail, but I'll be back!

We came down to view the dark skies and hike in Big Bend National Park.
The Barndominium was perfect. Plenty of space for all of us, extremely well stocked kitchen and bathrooms. We didn’t have a need for anything. Thank you for having good pots, pans, plastic containers, and ziplock bags.
It was a very clean place and we had a nice welcome from the hosts. There was a small snafu with the hot tub, but the hosts worked hard to get the issue taken care as quickly as possible. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting in the hot tub after our hikes and early in the morning. Stargazing from the hot tub was great.
I would definitely recommend this place! Thank you to our hosts!

Property and amenities were above expectations. Lots of wildlife nearby and great outdoor experience for my family!

Property is a bit out of the way, but so worth it. Friendly hosts, squeaky clean house with all the amenities. Kitchen well stocked, nice sheets, towels, etc. And outside? Lovely deck and patio, nice furnishings, and incredible view. Wildlife right below the deck in the evenings. Hosts obviously take pride in their property. And, no long list of chores before leaving.

The property is absolutely amazing. Surrounded by mountains. It is 15 miles off the main road which we did not mind. The owners were very hospitable and we enjoyed visiting with them. If you are looking to get off the beaten path this is your place. We loved every minute.

Mark and Michelle are very friendly and accommodating hosts. We were witnesses to the daily routines of various wildlife and entertaining ravens, beautiful skies and starry nights! Nice property just a bit more remote from TX-118 than we expected for going out and about.
5.0 / 5.0
Traveled to Big Bend with the family and stayed at Mark and Michelle's place for 3 nights. The barndo was clean and stocked with all the comforts of home (minus) drinkable water. The country is pretty remote and having to trailer water is a common practice. However, we did not have a shortage. The wildlife on the property was a joy to see each day and night.
5.0 / 5.0
Michelle and Mark were great hosts. The barndominium is best for stargazing and viewing the milky way, we really enjoyed our stay. The property has a well stocked kitchen and lots of games for kids.
The last 4 miles to the property are unpaved - cars with very low ground clearance not advised.

This place is phenomenal. Beautiful dark skies at night and great sun rises and sunsets. Mark is a wonderful host and was very informative. We plan on another trip to Casita de Chiles again!! Thanks!

The place was very comfortable to stay at. Our hosts gave us a tour of the place to let us know where things were located. The kitchen is well stocked with cookware and utensils. There's plenty of outdoor seating as well and at night you're able to see all of the stars. It is about an hour from Big Bend, so it's not too far. One thing to note is that the last 2 miles from the property is on gravel road so bring an appropriate vehicle and not a sedan :). I will definitely stay here again in a future visit to Big Bend.

This 2 bed room, 2 bathroom with spacious kitchen & living room cabin is a perfect getaway from city life. I timed it with a new moon to be able to soak in the dark starry night & it is a little over an hour away from the observatory. Mark & Michelle are perfect hosts, communiciative and just wonderful people to share these views with others. Mark feeds the animals so it truly feels like a disney movie at times with deer, foxes and every kind of bird. As always, a beautiful stay and I hope to return.

This stay was everything we needed and more! The kitchen was fully stocked with every essential covered, making cooking for our family very easy! The simple touches around the house made it feel like home and my family very much enjoyed ourselves. The property is breathtaking and Mark even feeds the deer each evening. The first night we saw 14 deer on the property.
Mark was very communicative with us throughout our stay and was also helpful with Tire Shop recommendations when we ended up with a flat tire inside Big Bend Park - fun times!
We highly recommend staying here!

Mark and Michelle were great hosts for us. Mark met us on arrival and explained everything and was super helpful. The property is about 15 miles off the main highway (roughly a 30 minute drive based on roads), but that is just how things are out west. It was a little over an hour to the visitor's center at Big Bend. The barndominium was an excellent place for our family and the mountain views were great. Appreciate all the amenities including the great kitchen tools. Also appreciate the fact they offer a break for military folks. Highly recommended!

What an amazing place to enjoy the solitude of nature. Mountains and desert landscape is so amazing and all the wildlife is a joy. The hosts are phenomenally nice people and have taken well care of everything!

Michelle and Mark were amazing from beginning to end. Amazing property in the private mountains of Terlingua. Saw tons of wildlife as promised! VRBO had everything we needed plus more! The electricity went out due to a storm and they had back up generators. Truly friendly people who wanted our family to have a great vacation!
