About this house rental
Transformed initially from a medieval farmhouse to a shooting lodge in the 1850s, Oughtershaw Hall sits amongst quiet woodlands, surrounded by sweeping valleys and dramatic open moorland. Its years and scale immediately transport you to a different age, and you could forgive one for quickly adopting the role of the landed gentry. Beautifully styled throughout, the impressive original features will come as no surprise. Intricate stained-glass windows, carved panelling and a set of servants' bells are all taken as read. But it would be a real cool customer who wasn't impressed by the original guestbook dating back to the mid-18th century. This rural retreat truly showcases all of Oughtershaw Hall's history, yet is still tastefully packed with all mod cons.
Entering the house through an impressive stone loggia, via the former servants' entrance, guests will find themselves following a fabulous stone-flagged labyrinth of winding passageways. Guided by the enticing whiff of woodsmoke (depending on the time of the year), take your pick from any one of four seating areas - each one an absolute haven of tranquillity. Curl up with a glass of red in front of a roaring fire in the drawing-room. Or perhaps swap stories beside the woodburning stove in the sitting room, where we'll be surprised if the conversation doesn't turn to the stunning stained-glass windows displaying the family's coat of arms. Then there's the historical oak table, inscribed with the initials of previous owner Charles Woodd, in 1876. Or the wooden panel in the wall which hides the original peephole. Why not help yourself to a real page-turner in the cosy library, while away a lazy afternoon to the sound of the babbling beck as it meanders past the house and down the valley. Perhaps unsurprisingly by now, another stove can be found in the snug off the kitchen - it's the perfect space to catch up with the rest of your party.
Oughtershaw Hall's well-equipped kitchen is vast. Open-plan and L-shaped, the spacious breakfast bar or an impressive dining table can seat your entire party. While in quieter moments, the built-in window seats provide restful views out to the garden.
Opposite the kitchen, where once stood an old pantry, now sits a contemporary, spacious utility room. A separate boot room also contains the inviting 8-seater sauna. And should the Yorkshire weather close in, there's a basement games room well-stocked with entertainment for kids and big kids alike.
If the downstairs is relaxing, then the seven impeccably designed bedrooms beckon tantalisingly from the first floor. Rumour has it that Charles I rested his head here - one suspects while it was still attached to his body. Many of the bedrooms have old character features, window seats and luxurious en-suites. A further downstairs bedroom has an en-suite shower room making it the perfect choice for anyone with limited mobility.
The pool, housed in an old farm building, is just a few steps from the main house. It's the perfect example of how the house manages to keep its integrity while offering modern-day facilities. Beautiful, bespoke, water-height windows and underwater lighting set the mood. And if the children haven't sprouted gills, perhaps you can snatch a quiet moment to float leisurely on your back. Gaze up to a lofty roof complete with characterful wooden beams.
The houses' original entrance - complete with ceiling rose, brass chandelier, and even more seating - is now the access to the gardens. Guests can follow the romantic ghyll through the verdant thicket as Oughtershaw Beck tumbles and turns to meet the River Wharf. There's more than one perfect picnic stop en route.
Back at the house, intrepid explorers or mooching meanderers can take to the patio and marvel at the extensive views. A stone inscription on the hall's wall proudly reads: "Welcome as the flowers in spring." Say no more.

I'm lucky enough to have enjoyed several stays at Oughtershaw and it never falls anywhere short of brilliant. The new riverside walk is a fantastic addition to the estate and was enjoyed by all the members of our family from George (1) to Great-Granma (84). We had birthday and retirement celebrations, a murder mystery evening, and lots of time just enjoying the house, the facilities and the surrounding countryside. The walk down Langstrothdale to 'Helen's House' has to be one of our favourite things to do in the whole world and this year I even made it up the ramp at the end of the return leg in one go. We love it here and hope to be back again very soon.

Oughtershaw Hall has everything you could possibly need. Ben and Tara cater to all your needs and go above and beyond to make sure you have everything. Once you get to Oughtershaw, you don't really need to go anywhere else! The property is top quality and has enough space that everyone is more than comfortable. There are plenty of places to explore, relax, cook and even swimming and a sauna. It caters for everyone and I wouldn't hesitate to return.

This was our first time at Oughtershaw Hall and we had an amazing time. The home is absolutely stunning with spacious rooms to accommodate everyone. Its a grand space with a cozy atmosphere. The team that look after the property are friendly and helpful. The house has amazing grounds which can be enjoyed all year round. If your looking for some where special to make happy memories Oughtershaw will not disappoint!

This property is outstanding along with the location and grounds it sits in.
We are a large family catering for needs from an 88 year old to 6 month old baby and we did not want for anything.
The facilities were excellent with the added benefit of swimming pool and sauna .
The property was spotlessley clean and very comfortable ,there was also ample parking.
Ben who met us at the property was great ,he explained everything to us and even produced a bottle of wine as it was my sisters 60th Birthday celebration weekend.
We would have no hesitation to book again and we are actually planning for next year,
I would also suggest for Sunday lunch to go to The George Inn which is about 5 miles away

The most amazing weekend!! Oughtershaw is the most stunning venue, and we will definitely be back.
All of the rooms are individual and have their own character. Every single person in our group was stunned by how beautiful the hall was, the grounds and the hall are breath taking. Everything was super clean, the beds were really comfy and to have a sauna and a pool was amazing. We were all excited about the weekend and kept looking at the video and pictures, I can honestly say the pictures on the website just don't do it justice. It's more fabulous in reality.
I would also like to say that from my initial contact with Tara and the welcome received from Ben, I could not fault the personal customer service. 5 star if not more!

We enjoyed our family time together at the lovely Oughtershaw Hall. There was always plenty to do, from water volleyball in the stunning pool, walking round the gardens, playing games in the cellar, sitting by the fire chatting, barbecuing, playing board games, sweating it out in the sauna, watching the wild life in the garden, playing football, gathering round for family meals and a wonderful place to have a treasure hunt! The facilities were super, luxuriously warm everything so well stocked. We enjoyed some scenic walks (one in the rain and some in the dry) and it was always lovely to return to the welcoming Hall with only the sheep to disturb if we were laughing too loudly! Ben was very helpful, respectful and unobtrusive. We have all come home with some marvellous family memories.

A truly spectacular property in very good condition, with everything you could need. Scrupulously clean. Well equipped kitchen which was a joy to cook in. Lots of comfy places to curl up with a book or join in family games. The pool is gorgeous.
The only setback for us was that the house is very isolated and there was nothing (apart from spectacular walks and views) for miles around, so every trip or meal out for our group of 11 meant 3 people did a lot of driving, on top of long journeys to and from Yorkshire (from as far as Brussels). None of this detracts from the loveliness of our week or our desire to return.

This is the 2nd stay at this wonderful place. Absolutely fantastic house with great facilities. The pool & sauna were even better in the cold weather. The caretaker Ben was amazing, nothing too much trouble he even came to help did the cars out when we had a dump snow. This added to our enjoyment and the Christmas season. We hope to return very soon.

Family from around the globe gathered at Outershaw Hall to celebrate Mum's 90th birthday. From the minute we arrived and were welcomed by Ben, to our leaving and once again chatting with him, we all had a wonderful time. With ages ranging from 18 to 90 there was something for everyone, meeting in the evenings for dinner in the kitchen/dining/lounge area: a space so perfect for us that many of the other ground floor rooms were never used.
The bedrooms were all comfortable, with lovely views, and the bathrooms spotlessly clean and warm. The kitchen was well equipped with all we could possibly need, and we made good use of the sauna, swimming pool and games room.
We enjoyed lunches at The George in Hubberholme, and the wonderful walks right on the doorstep.
The welcome basket and bubbly were an unexpected and much appreciated surprise. Thank you for a most enjoyable and memorable stay.

We have visited Oughtershaw Hall several times over the last few years. A group of 16 friends coming together for a week in a splendid property in a lovely part of the world.
We made full use of all of the excellent facilities - swimming pool, sauna, games room, thoroughly enjoying ourselves. Now, with a covered walk way through to the swimming pool, there's no need to brave the elements going for a swim.
The surrounding countryside has many excellent walks, good pubs, great views and, is in God's Own County, who could ask for more.
The bedrooms are warm, airy, comfortable, clean and tidy.
Cooking facilities can exercise the organisation of Sunday Lunch somewhat challenging, but a large lunch was served to everyone's satisfaction.
Help is on hand should there be problems, Ben is a real asset. Always cheerful, happy to oblige, and rapidly responsive if there are problems.
All in all, a great week (again) in a great property.
Would we go back again? A resounding "Yes, most definitely".

Fantastic accommodation in a very beautiful location. Everything about Oughtershaw hall requires superlatives to describe:

Just returned from an amazing family weekend at Oughtershaw Hall for my mums surprise 70th. The perfect venue for our party of 16.
The property was very grand with plenty of room for our party of various ages to all feel comfortable and enjoy the house and the impressive and well maintained grounds.
The house was lovely and clean, extremely well equipped and the pool and sauna were the icing on the cake.
Ben met us on arrival, he was very helpful and was only a phone call away if needed.
The welcome hamper, flowers and champagne were a lovely touch.
A fabulous weekend was had by all, lots of great memories made and we hope to return again in the future.
Thanks for having us

It's hard to imagine a more perfect setting for a family gathering. We got everyone together for Granma Dawn's 80th (two years late due to Covid) and the first time her family had all been together for over 20 years. The first reaction from everyone was 'this place is amazing' and so it proved. The layout, decor, fixtures and fittings all contributed to the atmosphere of relaxation, celebration, and togetherness; the pool and sauna provided that little touch of luxury; while the setting in the Dales gave some of us exhilarating (and sometimes breathless) views from the saddles of our bikes. We will definitely be back.

Fantastic house and gardens for a family get together
3 generations getting together for family holiday - ages 13 to 88. Loved the space in the house and the mix of original features with modern upgrade. Really clean with everything you could need. Extremely comfortable with plenty of space inside (several living rooms) and outside. Beautiful gardens and surrounding location stunning. We had a chef with us and the large kitchen worked perfectly for great family dining. Great cycling and walking from the doorstep though walking best if you drive a couple of miles first. Swimming pool was 12m and lovely and clean / fresh

Stunning
We had a fabulous family time away. The house and gardens are beautiful maintained and cared for, the views are stunning. We all loved the pool and temperature was perfect for all. The beds are all comfortable and we slept well. The WiFi is really good in the house. The chip shop in Hawes was a winner and the ice cream shop was a great treat.

Wonderful house in a fabulous location
We were a party of 15 aged between 6 months and 73 and it met all our needs perfectly. The house is great, impressive but also homely and the kitchen equipment was excellent.
The pool was a perfect temperature for little while ones to splash around with the added bonus of huge inflatable ducks! There was even an automatic inflator provided.
We loved the location and were blessed with sunny weather to explore.
We definitely plan to return!

Beyond our high expectations!
This beautiful property is just breathtaking, it is so welcoming & enfolds you like a warm hug. It is well equipped & very luxurious from the beautiful linens & towels to the cutlery & place mats, everything has been considered & executed very well. Ours was a family stay 5 siblings & partners staying under the same roof for the 1st time in 55 years. There is sufficient space that being together or seeking solace alone is seamless. The pool & sauna leave you feeling like you are at a luxury spa & we were lucky enough to have the weather to make the most of the bbq & patio. We enjoyed our stay so much that we have decided to make an annual event of a spring break together and cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with this jewel of the Yorkshire Dales.

A relaxed long weekend with a group of friends staying in an exceptional property
Our first stay at Oughtershaw Hall was a truly wonderful experience. The Hall is set in beautiful, tranquil surroundings with views of the river from the back of the house and walks on the doorstep. Each room has it's own character with working fireplaces creating a warm, comfortable atmosphere. An added bonus is the heated swimming pool and sauna. The kitchen is well equipped with everything you could possibly need to create a dinner party. The manager, Ben, couldn't be more friendly and helpful and he only lives 5 minutes away if anything should arise. We couldn't fault our visit here - we'll be back!!

Fabulous place.
We stayed at Oughtershaw Hall for a family get together for us, our children and our grandchildren…..age range 70 down to 4 year olds. The property was ideal as it catered for everyone, with huge gardens the children loved playing in, a little games room in the cellar (should the weather be inclement) with a football table, air hockey table and a child friendly dartboard, lovely indoor swimming pool and a sauna. With 3 separate living rooms as well as a huge kitchen there was enough room to not feel on top of each other. Had we stayed longer we would have explored some of the walks in the beautiful surrounding countryside. We would love to stay again but as our family is rapidly expanding we may sadly exceed their occupancy capacity soon. Highly recommended!!

Our 3rd visit to Oughtershaw Hall and we don't tire of it.
We have been visiting Wharfedale for c. 40 years. A family of 5 has increased to 16 in that time and so Oughtershaw Hall is ideal for special family holidays. A 40th birthday in 2017, Christmas 2018 and the recent half-term to celebrate our Golden Wedding. Obviously it is not cheap but for a large family or several smaller groups It is not expensive - if that makes sense!
The facilities are superb and there is oodles of space and several reception rooms to permit a quiet moment if needed. The ability to all eat together, the log fires, the pool, the sauna - need I say more.
Ben takes great pride in keeping the house and surrounds in good order and is only a phone call away in the event of a problem.
Great walking can be had from the house or is just a stones throw away.
A very special place. We have already booked another Christmas!

An outstanding property in a magic location
For the ultimate in luxury in a wonderful location where you can enjoy peace and quiet with family or friends look no further !
This beautifully restored Hall is in an area which has probably seen little change in several hundred years and is ideal for walking
If you have a chance of going to Oughtershaw Hall take it !

Mrs Hopwood-Casson
An amazing house with the most superb facilities. We booked the house the accomodate our now very large close family to celebrate our Golden Wedding. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect location and young and old made full use of the fabulous pool and sauna. With an age range of 86 years to 5 months its a big ask to find the right place to suit everyone but we certainly managed it.

Oughtershaw revisited!
A second visit to this beautiful house did not fail to disappoint! The grandchildren had spoken of nothing else for weeks before we arrived. The swimming pool is such a hit - parents dragged along to supervise three times a day! Two of the youngest overcame their apprehension and achieved success swimming unaided. Great country for the triathletes, great walks, great river for messing about in - it really is a wonderful location. The house itself is so well appointed - everything you need for a great relaxing week. Ben most welcoming and able to help with any queries. All in all just a great place for the gathering of the clan!

A marvellous place for a largish family gathering in a beautiful part of Yorkshire
Eleven members of the family (7 adults & 4 children) spent a week for some senior birthdays in this lovely hall, where I had stayed for two weeks in 1952. My memories of a very happy holiday many years ago were not disabused by a return visit, not just because it now has electricity and hot water! The house is as magnificent as ever, but the big difference is that it has been extensively but tastefully modernised inside and most of the old features of the family who originally owned the house have been retained. There are several large rooms and a massive well fitted kitchen. All eight bedrooms are spacious and beds are very comfortable. Four are en suite and bathrooms are large. The large terrace is excellent for eating outside with views down Oughtershaw Beck, (not just eating - barbecuing, drinking and loafing and just enjoying the serenity). The garden is long and slopes down to the beck, but croquet is playable if not up to Hurlingham standards. It is a great place for walks and wildlife. (Spotted flycatchers abound). There is a heated indoor pool in the coach house, much used by young and old. Ben, the house manager is very helpful in explaining everything and helping with problems. It is simply a wonderful place and I really can not fault it.

A dream house in an amazing location.
Fantastic house in a stunning location, on a dark night the sky is so big with no light pollution.
The house was warm immaculately clean with plentiful supply of kitchen utensils for cooking a celebration meal.
Ben the house manager very helpful and keen to make our stay special. Ben had the log burners roaring for our arrival which was a lovely touch.
The swimming pool was a massive hit with the children.
What a special house, can’t wait to return.
