About this house rental
Congratulations! You have found Habaru House on VRBO. VRBO is also showing you “comparable units” to look at. But where are those units are located? How far are the places they suggest staying from the places you want to visit in Belize?
We are in the laid-back village of Hopkins, which is a hub of tourism and adventure for central Belize. Beautiful hiking trails and wildlife preserves are close by. Take a day trip to the Mayan Ruins, or turn towards the sea for snorkelling adventures, scuba diving, fishing and paddle boarding.
Hopkins is a unique, relaxed village that successfully transitioned from a traditional fishing village into one with an eco-tourism theme. Walk the streets, ride one of our bicycles or rent a golf cart to explore the various eateries, shops featuring local wares, and grocery stores. This is a destination for the adventurous to see the real Belize in Hopkins and its surrounding area; if you are jlooking for a cosmopolitan, busy, up-to-the-minute place, Hopkins is not it.
Habaru House is a terrific home base for your Belize adventures. Ideal for families, it is fronted by a gentle, sloping beach with little to no walk-by traffic; we believe we are located on one of the nicest beaches in the country. Enjoy the beautiful ocean from the white sand beach or second floor covered patio with its exotic cane ceiling. Beach chairs, a lazy day hammock, an outside "rinse-off" shower and an outside charcoal grill are all available for your use.
South of Hopkins village proper, Habaru House is a 12-20 minute walk to ten outstanding ocean front restaurants and several roadside eateries.
We are happy to inform you that our accommodation is a Tourism Gold Standard Recognized Accommodation, which means we have implemented strict measures to mitigate any COVID risks for our guests and employees including disinfecting all surfaces, cleaning, and sanitation of all high touch areas. We sparkle!
An emergency cell phone is provided for direct contact with our property managers. Additional minutes can be purchased at the nearby Diversity Cafe.
The Habaru House living area is on the second and third floors (see floor plans in picture area). Local artwork and wall hangings enhance the atmosphere. If you choose to "cook in" you will enjoy the fully-equipped kitchen with mahogany cabinets adjacent to the dining and living areas. Or have our housekeeper prepare one or more meals for you; she is an independent contractor and a fantastic cook!
Habaru House also has a deluxe ground floor apartment for two: Habaru 31G, which is rented separately (please see VRBO listing 9714405). The deluxe one-bedroom unit is connected to the upstairs house via an internal lockable stairwell and may be rented in addition to Habaru House to expand the total capacity of the rental.
The flooring in the living area is Italian marble; bedroom floors are barbajalote; all exterior and interior trims are Belize mahogany; and vaulted ceilings feature a mixture of exotic hardwoods. Doors are hand made from local “poison wood”, known for its outstanding wood grain. The spacious master bedroom suite has exotic cane ceilings and the large master bathroom boasts double sinks, a deep soaker tub and a large separate shower.
Habaru House is centrally located to reach many of Belize’s exciting activities.
Water-based activities include:
Snorkelling trips
Scuba diving

The fishing is wonderful! If fresh lobster and conch are in season and something you are looking for, you have come to the right place! The close-by hotels have the best restaurants in Belize, in our opinion. Or even better, go into the village and eat at one of the local restaurants to enjoy a local, cultural “Garifuna” dish.
This home-away-from-home features all of the comforts of your own home: flat screen TV, all appliances, reading materials and a variety of games, AC in all living areas. You will not be roughing it on this Belize adventure! Check out the photos.
Don’t feel like cleaning, cooking, or doing the laundry on vacation? These services are all available for an additional charge. Make your vacation a true vacation!. Transportation to and from Dangriga airport or from BZE International is also available from Kulcha Tours.
A fantastic crew maintains our property. They rake the beach, arrange for the kayaks, and handle any of your concerns; just ask. They treat guests as family and want you to truly enjoy your vacation.
How to get here: Major airlines fly into Belize International Airport (BZE). From there you have options: rent a car and drive down to Hopkins (about a 2-2.5 hour drive on the beautiful Hummingbird Highway, or slightly less on the newly completed Coastal Highway. Or, take one of the regional carriers (Tropic Air or Maya Air) to the Dangriga Airport; from there it is only a short 20-25 minute taxi ride to the property.
Let us help you have a vacation to remember!
Please note: Individuals/groups looking for a "party house" should look elsewhere: this a quiet beach front area and a family home in which we take pride. We value the relationships we have with our neighbours, so if there are complaints, you will be asked to leave.

Gillian's house is an incredible getaway. We were a family of 8 across three generations, and everyone loved this gem in Hopkins.
Gillian, Anthony, and Dana were all extremely helpful and we loved Dana's cooking!
Thank you all for an unforgettable trip.

We had the best stay @ Habaru House. It was tremendously clean and comfy and was stocked with all the things we needed. I loved that they also provided sunscreen, bug spray, water and laundry detergent. The property managers were so helpful and came 2x during our stay to see if we needed anything. The multiple AC wall until were perfect allowing us to adjust our bedrooms to fit individual needs. The house is equipped with kayaks and bikes. Loved having the option for in house chef too. Proximity to all the locals and restaurants made us feel apart of the community, which was our favorite part. House sigs Will definitely stay here again.

We had a little bit of a rough start, but Anthony (the property manager) was there to help us through - when the water stopped running after a power outage, when the airline lost my luggage, when the beach needed some trash clean-up. And Gillian (the owner) was always reachable and very responsive with any/all questions we had (before and during our stay). The house was clean, comfortable, and roomy. The view was gorgeous (although not located for direct sunrise or sunset viewing). It was great to have access to the bikes and kayaks. The bikes would have been especially helpful if we didn't have a car, to get to the restaurants in the village. The bugs were there - but that is to be expected in Belize. Overall - Habaru House was a great place for us to stay and have a great time with our family.

The house was beautiful and clean, the kitchen well-stocked with utensils and gadgets, and the property and view were gorgeous. The covered patio was my favorite spot. The house is located fairly close to the village which was convenient. Only one of the days allowed for kayaking off the beach, but those that went got to see manatees. The host and property manager answered questions very promptly. I do recommend that the procedure to re-start the water pump following a power outage be added to the guest book, but we had no issues getting it resolved quickly with the property manager's assistance. Overall, we all had a really great visit and would definitely stay here again.

The Habaru House is beautiful! And perfect for groups. Clean, spacious, right on the beach, and with four bathrooms! Everyone loved it. We’d also recommend hiring Dana for catering a few meals at the house. Her cooking was wonderful. The sea grass as others have mentioned can build up on the beach some days, and other days it’s more clear. This is no fault of the Habaru House since it is dependent on the tides and larger sea grass patterns, and we communicated with Anthony when the beach needed to be raked. Several people in our group swam in the ocean every morning. We would stay here again.

We had a wonderful family vacation. The house is larger than we expected. Very large rooms.
The large kitchen was great for everyone being able to help cook. The location is close to restaurants and village. However the deck with ocean views was the best.

This place was perfect in every way, location, the beach, right on the sea, but there was one exception. The furniture in the living room was absolutely horrible. You could not sit on a comfortable couch or chair after a day on the water or exploring the village of Hopkins or even any tours. Please put in new living rm furniture so your guests have a place to relax at the end of the day! If it wasn't for that it would be 5 stars all the way down.

Great property. Super location for enjoying the beach. Fishing was good in front of property. Loved using the kayaks and bicycles

Wonderful Stay at the Habaru House
The apartment was perfect for 2 people. It had all the kitchen stuff needed and the location was fabulous as right on the beach and close to great restaurants. Was nice to have bikes and kayaks available too. Bikes were great to get to the village. Only thing missing for us was chaise lounges for suntanning and perhaps more regular cleaning of the beach. Other than that would highly recommend staying here.

Beachfront Paradise
I enjoyed the property and the people Doug hooked me up with locally were outstanding. Sadie and Kurt with the car rental, Noewel and Bert with the fishing and Anthony were very helpful.
A couple of things that some might have trouble dealing with was the refrigerator, even after turning it down froze things. There was no hot water but I found it refreshing after a day of being out fishing and the TV didn't work. I guess since it was off season it wasn't worth having it. I'm an adventurer so everything was "Great" for me but the more cultured might be offended...

Best Beach Yet
Our stay at Doug’s place could not have been better. Anthony was so helpful and Doug gave many useful suggestions so that we could hit many of the best spots in Hopkins. The beach, location, and proximity to town were perfect for us, especially with the kayaks and bikes. We are already imagining our next visit!

Return to Hopkins
We stayed at this property last year for 4 weeks and loved it so much we returned for 8 weeks this January & February.
On arrival the apartment and beach were immaculate thanks to Anthony and Dana who manage this property and the new bed was extremely comfortable.
We loved watching the sunrise over the ocean every morning while drinking our coffee on the patio. Couldn’t ask for a more relaxing and beautiful view.
We would like to point out that occasionally sea weed & bits of plastic do wash up on the beach but this is in no way the fault of the property owner but down to the tides and the wind and is always cleaned up by Anthony and his crew as soon as possible. Well done boys!
We received a wonderfully warm welcome back from all the local people who remembered us from last year and made lots of new friends as well.
As all of our friends know we are both fishing mad and could be found fishing off the dock most days unless we were out on the river with Fred from the Green Iguana or out on the reef with Captain Burt & Kaleem from Golden Tours. Amazing catches this year including King Fish, King Mackerel, Permit, Barracuda, Snapper and Snook.
If you want to see an amazing sight book the bioluminescence tour on the river which happens a few nights every month.
Our favourite restaurants nearest Harbaru House are The Barracuda Bar & Grill, Rob’s Love on the Rocks and The Lucky Lobster. Great food and excellent service.
If you need to hire a car then you can do no better than Hopkins Auto Rental who can also arrange to pick you up at Belize Airport and drive you back at the end of your holiday. Lovely people who couldn’t be more helpful if they tried. Thanks to Sadie and Kirk senior & junior.
We love it here and hope to return again next year. The apartment has everything you could possibly need with views to die for and would definitely recommend it. Hopkins might be a little dusty with it’s dirt roads which can have a few pot holes in them but the experience of the locals warm and friendly hospitality more than makes up for this.

The house is wonderful with excellent amenities at the beach (chairs, table, hammocks, palm umbrella), for recreation (bikes, kayaks, life vests all in local storage room), and all the necessities for in the house (appreciated local cell phone - internet was not working during our week). We stayed in the 1-br 31G below the 4-br unit. There were never any noise, lack of privacy issues, or feeling crowded on the beach; we enjoyed meeting and visiting with our upstairs neighbors. The beach area has a secluded feeling from the adjacent neighbors. Compared to north Hopkins the sand beach is more narrow (~25 yards), and very fine sand. Sea grass takes over at ~25 yards on the bottom - our upstairs neighbors had a manatee swim under their kayak!! We greatly enjoyed watching the pelicans. We appreciated Anthony and Dana checking in on us, as well as keeping the beach area clean. The property and area neighborhood is attractive with nice landscape plantings, and within walking distance to many excellent restaurants (most have free wifi). We scheduled pickups for daily excursions; it was fantastic! We highly recommend the property.

We booked this house for 4 nights and ended up only staying one night. The house itself is nice, but hard to find. The road to the house is in such bad condition it is almost indescribable. We found the town of Hopkins dirty & not what we wanted. The beach was filthy with garbage and weeds. The only bed cannot possibly be a queen. It is the hardest double bed with brick pillows - and squeaks loudly with every move. And, the WiFi did not work. So, we packed up and went to Placencia.

Loved Every Minute
We spent 4 weeks this January at 31G Harbaru House and can honestly say we had the most amazing time. The apartment was very clean and roomy with everything you need supplied and it’s right on the beach. Anthony and Dana were about most days to make sure we had everything we needed and you must try Dana’s excellent cooking.
We love fishing and could be found most days on the public dock with our fishing rods and caught bucket loads of fish including jacks, snapper, snook, barracuda and even a nurse shark.
Our favourite restaurants were The Barracuda Grill, Chef Robs and the Lucky Lobster all of which had excellent food and great service.
We also enjoyed zip lining and the waterfalls at the Mayan Sky Canopy Tour and the Xunantunich Maya Ruin which has an incredible view from the top. Belize Zoo is also well worth a visit even if you don’t normally agree with the idea of zoos as none of the animals were taken from the wild. They were either injured, orphaned or born there and wouldn’t survive in the wild. The up close and personal encounter with Chiqui the Jaguar is a must, what a beautiful animal.
Fishing trips out to the reef can be arranged by Beaches and Dreams and we found the crew very knowledgeable and experienced. Mega catches 2 days running including Pompano, Spanish Mackerel, Jacks, Snapper and Barracudas.
Hopkins Car Hire is the place to hire a car from. Very reasonable rates and great service and they will even arrange pick up and drop off at Belize Airport.
Thanks go to Doug for answering all of our questions before we set out and for supplying such a wonderful place including the kayaks which were great fun.
We would definitely recommend a visit here and found the people of Hopkins to be friendly, polite and helpful.

Nice place
Very nice place. Beach was a good view but had a lot of trash on it. House was clean. Have Dana cook a meal for you. Outstanding. The road is like the surface of the moon but they were working on improving it when we left.

Really great stay
Excellent all around
Doug was very prompt in responses, welcomed all questions and provided advice and was very accommodating to allow us to come a day early.
The apartment was beautiful, spacious and well appointed. Everything we needed was there. We loved the convenience of having the washer, dryer, bikes and kayaks, bottled water, hair dryer, AC, cell phone, TV and flashlights for night excursions on site. Golf cart on site also available for rent. We had no trouble with internet service. The security guard patrolling the area after dark was comforting although we never had any concerns for our personal safety.
The location on the beach is perfect, with plenty of lounging, sitting areas. There is a wonderful bit of a jungle feel to this area on the beach with parrots etc... chirping in the trees. We enjoyed being "on the beach" under the covered porch while it rained. It is a public beach but it was relatively private during our 8 day stay, only a few people walked by. Several restaurants and bars within walking distance, Many more restaurants and grocers a (bumpy) bike ride away.
Another highlight of staying at Habaru house is the use of the kayaks at their other property Bocawina Bank, which is a bike ride away and directly on the Sittee River, excellent kayaking!
Anthony was helpful with the bikes. Next time I would definitely have Chef Dana prepare a meal for us. I would recommend hooking up with Charlton from Kulcha tours if you do not have a car (we were happy that we didn't rent a car) He took us to and from the airport and was available as we needed, was flexible, funny and extremely knowledgeable about Belize and all the things to do and see. Happy Go Lucky tours picked us up and dropped us off right on the beach for an awesome day charter on the water.
We stayed in the downstairs apartment 31G which was perfect for us but next time we would love to rent the upstairs and downstairs and have our kids and their families join us!
Bring your bug spray, itch cream and you will have a great stay!!

A Great Vacation Property
My wife and I recently spent 5 nights at this property. It is fantastic, right on the beach; we have rented it 4 or 5 times and we will keep going back. It is close to good restaurants and to places to take you snorkeling or diving (Hamanasi does great snorkeling trips) and it is not far from parks for hiking, bird watching and river tubing. The apartment has everything you will ever need, and the local property manager is very friendly and will take care of any issue that might come up. We love this place.
4.8
Clean comfortable, central
The apartment was well equipped, comfortable , and close to the water. We had beautiful breeze, but did have a little seaweed accumulation. The men rake the beaches every day so it was not a problem.
Snorkeling was great, zip line and the falls are close.

Lovely quiet private beachfront rental near Hopkins, Belize
If you are looking for a very comfortable spot to chill by warm, shallow Belizean waters, Doug's place is definitely worth a second look. You will be about 15 seconds from the water's edge; a short walk (or less than 10 minute drive) away from over a dozen restaurants, two big grocery, beer & wine shops, numerous snorkel and dive tour operators to connect you with the reef; and, with a little additional poking around, a variety of local Belizean services - art, crafts, baked goods, local Mennonite veggies, awesome pizza, and herbal teas and medicines. Jump in the car one day and visit Dangriga on market days, or the fascinating Mayan archaeological sites that lie south, towards Punta Gorda. If you continue to follow the Southern Highway south to it's terminus in PG (as the town is called), right where the road becomes a one way (after you pass through Cattle Landing) you will find Jacqueline's Restaurant on the seas side of the road, across from the gas station. Order the fish. Back at Doug's, you will find Doug's property manager to be a wealth of information and concerned about your comfort and well being. Likewise, the security guards are great people to chat with about Belizean culture and customs as they perform all-night rounds of the beach properties in the security zone. We had one local entrepreneur come by of an evening, selling beaded trinkets but he was very respectful and disappeared instantly when we said we weren't interested. Sometimes vacationers will strolled by the place, but not often.

Harbaru House, Apt 31G was the perfect place for our Belize vacation!
The apartment was exactly the way it appeared in the listing. Clean and very well maintained. Perfect beach house - open and breezy. Swimming everyday in clear water right out from the apartment. We loved having the kayaks and bikes available for us to use at our leisure. Doug's map and info packet were really helpful. We enjoyed the wonderful high end restaurants just a walk down the beach and the local cuisine in the town of Hopkins, just a bike ride away! Our trips to the nearby parks were incredible. We hope to come back again soon!

A quality home with everything you could hope for.
This home is well equipped for the traveller who wants their hands free at the airport. The owner has thoughtfully outfitted the home with a good selection of spices and basics. The first aid kit is great. The bikes are tuned and ready for you to ride. The kayaks are at hand with plenty of life jackets. There are bbq coals and fresh water at hand and all the systems for arrival are in excellent working order. Staff are well trained and can answer all your questions. The town itself is great. Do not hesitate to book this home. You will not be disappointed.

Private & Peaceful
We stayed from Dec 24 - 31, 2016. This property is on quiet beach with barely anyone walking through there. The downstairs unit has lot of space, with big living, dinning, and Kitchen area. It is well stocked with pots & pans, and some condiments & supplies. It has a huge porch with lots of chairs. Beach area is well shaded with trees, and grill with coal & lighter fluid. Bicycles available were convenient to go to village for lunch, and there are other restaurants on the beach resorts.
While we were there it was raining every morning, so the beach was covered with leaves/sea weed, which the cleaning crew did not clean. Yes, there are bugs/sand flies, which you cannot avoid anywhere in Belize, so use lots of bug spray. When we went for ziplining & Rappelling in to the forest, we got eaten alive with bugs (botlass may be), which leaves drop of blood with every bite, and the itching is really painful for days. Itching continued for 3 days after we came to the States. TAKE LOTS OF BUG SPRAY, ANTI-ITCH Cream, or whatever helps you. Other than that, we had a great time in this beautiful place with really nice people.

Habaru 31G
We recently spent a week at Habaru House 31G. It is a 1BR-1 bath, that is downstairs. The accommodations we more than we could have expected. They were clean and well kept. It has everything you need for your stay in Hopkins. All of the appliances were new and kept clean. The shower is awesome. Our only wish was that the bed was a bit firmer.
We had access to the beach just steps away. Anthony and Gil checked on us daily and made sure we had everything we needed. They also suggested things to do and see. They will even call the tour guides to set up your trip. Also, Charlton (Charlie) picked us up at the airport and showed us around. You will enjoy him as he is a very knowledgeable guide. Use Dougs favorites that he will send you as they are spot on.
I recommend renting the golf cart if it is available. We used it daily as we went into the village every day. Most days more than once. We also drove to the marina twice. Some of the restaurants are walkable, but the village and markets are about 3 miles.
Overall we had a great experience and we would stay here again.
