Great historic hotel. Nice bar too. Lovely river and beautiful little Thetford is nearby. A must for Dads Army fans.
3.6
OK place to stay - friendly and helpful service - steeped in 'Dads Army' memorabilia.
Probably in need of a lick of paint here and there.

Nice friendly welcome and helpful staff, good food Great Breakfast.

Check in was a good experience. The lady was very friendly and helpful. The only detail she got wrong is that we’d booked two single rooms and she was under the impression we’d booked a single and a double. She looked again and corrected herself. She gave us the keys and one of the rooms was a double….. we paid for breakfast up front when booking. At checkout, the lady (a different one to the previous) tried to charge breakfast for one of the rooms - the double we were given. I explained that we’d already paid up front for breakfast and that I would show her the email as proof. She didn’t want to see the email and told us not to worry about it. I can only gather from this that the lady who checked us in, still gave us a wrong room, despite me telling her we’d booked two singles, hence why we were asked to pay breakfast for one of them. Anyway, the lady took the keys and we were gone. Two hours later, I received a phone call from the lady asking where the room keys were. All very odd. I reminded her that she took them from us at check out. She said she’d have another look for them. We never heard anything back.
As for my room, there was dry urine on the back of the toilet, the soap dispenser was completely empty, the bathroom door did not close, as the door was too big for the frame (clearly moved or warped over the years), the mattress was lumpy and windows drafty.
Breakfast, however was lovely - couldn’t fault it.

The room was very tired probably fitted out in the 70s. The shower did not function properly so asked the onsite manager what could be done. She moved us into another room which was better but still in need of a make over. Asked the new manager there was a problem with the cleanliness of the room and she promised this would be done. It wasn't. Waited 45mins for our food to arrive in the evening and was told they had a party of 20 in no apology. This is our second Green King holiday we have had this year and both hotels were the same. Very very tired and the management does not seem to care. We shall not use them again

Like the front garden and free car parking. Property in need of renovation and brought up to modern standards such as new carpets, air-conditioning and high speed free WiFi.
3.6
Property is dated but comfortable
3.6
I agree with several other reviewers: service at The Bell is excellent, the food (we had) was very good and our room was comfortable . However, it's a shame that Greene King do not seem to be attending to items of wear and tear in the building. Overall though we were very happy with our stay, and felt it was good value for money.

Was very friendly staff nothing to much
Would stay again

Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The location is excellent. The room was clean and comfortable.

Very comfortable stay

Lovely friendly and helpful staff, amazing food.
Great building, though some of the property was tired and could do with a refurb, though it was all very clean.
3.6
Staff were excellent, breakfast very good.
Sadly paintwork and furniture vary dated.
Generally everywhere was well cleaned and bed linen was very good.
3.6
Good. Clean.

The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. Although I am a lone woman, I didn’t feel at all uncomfortable either staying at The Bell, or walking around Thetford in general.
I thoroughly recommend The Bell, and will be staying there again. I had previously stayed at the Travelodge in Thetford.
3.6
Very tired and dated rooms
No hot water in the morning, so cold shower, unacceptable
Won’t be back
3.6
Beautiful old building but needs some TLC.
3.6
Desperately in need of update and renovation
3.6
Bed was comfortable but building felt a bit run down.

Hotel was looking tired and needed updating. Toilet were leaking with urine on the floor and our bedroom tap was leaking. In the bar I asked if I could pay extra for the beer I liked instead of the cheaper beer offered with the meal. He did not know and was of little help. So I told him we would not order and would eat in Weatherspoons instead, which is what we did.

Great experience.

Found the pillows uncomfortable. Television wouldn't turn off. Overall it was ok
3.6
Very central
3.6
A pleasant place to stay and I would imagine it would be better in the summer. No helped with sll the flooding after the recent rains.
3.6
Rough and ready
Needs some tlc as certain things need addressing broken tiles
Broken wall sockets
Feeble shower
3.6
Disappointing for a Greene King inn. The room was dated with bare minimum provisions. Bed was comfy though & room very warm. The whole place overall seemed tired and there was a general lack of care or enthusiasm.
3.6
Lovely staff.
Hotel badly needs modernising.
Tiny tv had annoying buzz coming from speakers rendering it useless for watching anything. The crappy aluminum 1950's window frame was damaged so one side would close and the other had a 3cm gap. The bathroom while clean was very dated with grouting and mastic sealing needing a great deal of love.
3.6
Rooms very dated lighting poor and bathrooms like back in the 70,s need to spend on refurbishing and at £80 is too expensive maybe Dads Army liked it but it’s 2023

The staff are lovely. It was perfect for me to spend the night to see my partner. Room was very nice. Bed was comfy, reasonable price, lovely walk down the canal that backs onto it. Very accessible to come and go as I pleased. The carpark to the rear when you get there looks like it’s paid, but once you go inside and give your reg details it’s free. My room was room 1. The heating was on (it’s end nov) so it was a lovely temp.
3.6
Hotel is good for the price but it could do with a little bit of a upgrade the staff are really nice and go out of the way to help will definitely be coming back
3.6
I was in the older part of the hotel and certain areas like the bathroom really demonstrated this. I couldn’t get the cold water tap on the shower to work. Staff were very friendly and helpful
3.6
Very comfortable nights sleep. Staff helpful & polite.. certain areas could do with a tart up but it was very clean
3.6
Friendly and helpful staff. Good size room and bathroom. Good food and bar.
In need of refurbishment.
3.6
What could be a lovely old hotel was very run down and grubby looking (although closer inspection it was clean). Room (16) bath surface very poor & needed re enameling, sink plug hole broken, shower didnt run away. Window was stuck open until helpful receptionist climbed up and sorted it for me.
The whole place looked like it could do with a major refurb, felt sorry for the staff who were very friendly but working in a poor quality establishment.
Certainly not worth the rate I paid.
3.6
Very outdated and run down, toilet would make a loud long noise when you flushed, TV hummed louder than the volume. Walls and tiles were cracked and falling away, window wouldn’t shut properly, main light in room flickered and hummed when on. Needed more maintenance and repairs to be done to make it a comfortable stay.
3.6
Room was adequate, bathroom is in desperate need of a refurbishment.
Our window was over the function room / car park and was very noisey, had to leave window open as there is no air conditioning in the rooms.
We only ate at the hotel on Sunday evening, when they had run out of roasts, had limited menu, which was further restricted as their fryer had broken down. Not value for money at £100 per night.
3.6
As soon as we got there it felt off we wasn’t happy with the creaky floor boards and lopsided floors. The smell was damp and musky we thought we would give the room a chance soon as we got in we quickly darted straight back out there was huge cracks in the ceiling and spiders on the ceiling and all in the bathroom and bath. The grout was orange and mouldy and just felt like the roof or floor would cave in. The pictures on websites do NO JUSTICE they are selling completely opposite to what website offers. Wouldn’t recommend. Very old very used and outdated really needs freshening up and a lot fixing And cleaning. Although staff were kind and friendly
3.6
Helpful staff and bathroom was not cleaned
3.6
The hotel was reasonable with excellent affordable dining It was a bit noisy but that was due to the location rayher than the hotel which was reasonably quiet The room was fine albeit bit dated but the bed was very comfy The one thing that let it down was the state of the bath It had obvious not had a deep clean for months It had brown run marks all round the inside and there was build-up of dirty hard scale round tap end and plug hole. We did not feel able to use it at all. We came back late and left quote early so did not have the energy for the 4 flights of stairs again to go and complain We are both nearly 80 It was a shame that a 10 minute job or a regular proper clean spoilt the night.
3.6
Lovely old hotel. Staff were lovely. Food excellent
