Great location, helpful, friendly staff, massive breakfast !
2.5 / 5.0
Really central location, lovely and kind staff, and a special place to stay! (Old, slanty floors and wavy glass windows provide charm!)
We loved how close the hotel was to all the attractions, and the history of the location made it feel extra special!

It wasn’t clear to me that this hotel is actually a pub. Our room was next to the beer garden. We had people eating/smoking right outside our bedroom window. Fortunately it was on,y Thursday night. I imagine it would be unbearably noisy on a Friday or Saturday.

Great location and lovely staff in the pub and restaurant. Clean and comfortable and unique. Our room window faced the beer garden so was a bit noisy, best to ask for a room other than 12 if that would bother you. Could use better lighting for reading, otherwise was a wonderful stay.

We stayed in the suite and it was extremely cold there was no heating in the room and the portable heater they provided was not working, shower was warm not hot which was a massive let down as the room itself was nice clean and spooky.

Quirky pub with character. But wonky staircase and floors felt a bit unsafe. And there was a green light on ceiling of bedroom that affected my wife's sleep.
4.0 / 5.0
The setting is unique; rooms within an inn, within inches of dining customers. The pub closes early enough that their revelry didn’t keep us awake. We just couldn’t freely use the window for light and air because it’s anything but private. But we will remember having slept near Guy Fawkes’ birthplace.

We really felt that this property was overrated, and also misrepresented... it was portrayed as much fancier and cooler than it was.
The room was tiny, cramped, and crypt like, and the overall inn itself was small, dark and cramped as well. It seemed clean on the surface, but the whole experience felt grimy, and I didn't really want to set anything down in our room.
I dreaded going back to the property at the end of the day, and felt claustrophobic and uncomfortable the whole time we were there. Honestly, we should have checked out and gone somewhere else, but we didn't realize that it was an option, as we had prepaid for the stay.
Additionally, the property was located in the most cramped, overly touristy area in York, and there were throngs of people outside at all times. This is a terrible, touristy location.
The noise levels were unbelievable, and I can't believe that there were no warnings about this in advance. The room is over a noisy pub, and there was loud drunken revelry below us and outside the window which kept waking us up.
The staff seemed annoyed by working there, and there was a general lack of care and attention in general.
Also, some people might have thought that the age and deterioration of the building was quaint and historic, but the room slanted really dramatically and it made it difficult to walk around. The bed was loud and creaky, and the sheets were rough like sandpaper.
This was one of the worst places we have ever stayed!

Luv the building, pub, restaurant and rooms. For being a very old historic structure it is well maintained. Rooms are well appointed and very comfortable including the bed. The inn couldn't be better placed to see the old sections of York. Most everything is only steps away or a very short walk. Plenty of sites and dining options close by.

I wouldn’t call the bedroom deluxe, it was adequate. I felt it was in need of updating.
The shower wasn’t great, it was difficult to regulate the temperature. The only complementary toiletry supplied was hand wash. The shower room could do with a shelf, there was nowhere to put anything & we had to leave our wash bags on the floor. It could have done with the mirror being in the middle of the room rather than tucked behind the door, not very convenient when trying to use a hairdryer.
The outside area was a bit on the tatty side & cramped.
On a positive note, the staff were friendly and the food was all lovely and tea & coffee facilities & ear plugs were supplied!

quaint hotel with nooks and niches however a bit dimly lit nearly came a
cropper twice on the bedroom step and the shower was really dangerous without a non slip mat. however staff very good and cleanliness great

Quirky hotel.

Loved this historic building in a wonderful location in the heart of York. The staff were all brilliant, really friendly and very helpful. The breakfast was great too. For a hotel right next to the Minster I wasn’t expecting it to be so quiet at night but it was surprisingly peaceful and the bed was sooo comfy.

Lovely historical building with wonky stairs, lovely rooms and the perfect central location

Parking not great, long way with a lot of suitcases. Difficulties checking in staff very busy. Rooms lovely and just as described. Excellent location in the centre of York.

Do not drive there. No parking close by

Right next to the Minster, it made waking to all interesting areas very easy. The room was charming and made one feel as though it had barely changed since the 17th C. yet had modern conveniences. The one thing I would note is that a good light is needed by the mirror in the bedroom, as I could see only the very top of my head in the bathroom mirror where the light is excellent.

Came for the races, as two cold, basically just stayed for a room over our heads.
Overall comfortable,
But for the price I would expect breakfast to be included.

Staff very friendly and helpful, the rooms very comfortable, however you are paying for the history of the pub and it’s proximity to the Minster

What a treat. It was like stepping back in time! We loved the hotel, the location and had a great breakfast as well.

Great historic property smack dab in the middle of York. There's a lovely pub on the first floor, so it really does feel like you're staying at inn from days of yore. We loved this about the place. Others might like it less. Personal preference. Breakfast was really good, so be sure to get that if you stay here.

It is a very unique place. The staff was very helpful and were willing to store our bags before and after checkout. We really enjoyed it a must stay.

If you’re looking for an authentic old English pub stay then this is it. Such charm and character right in the centre of York. Yes the timber floor squeaks and rooms have a lean to one side but we loved everything about it. The drinks and food were great too.

Lovely stay. Shower temp was unpredictable but otherwise and excellent stay!

Staying in the back of the beer harden. Cosy well apponted room. Welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff, very close to everything York has to offer.

Fantastic location. Lovely room. Helpful staff. Beer gardens covered over which was helpful when it rained! Great for drinks and food too. Only issue was getting the shower to stay at temperature. Hearing the bells of York Minster and seeing it from the beer garden was lovely.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this unique, charming, and fascinating inn. We stayed in Room 10 and it was over the top - amazing design that doesn't let you forget whose inn you are staying at! ;-)

Shockingly comfortable bed, plush pillows, excellent central location and a cool bit of history!

What a fun, convenient and historically rich place to stay. The location was convenient to transportation and anything was a short walk away. The room was spacious, bathroom luxurious, bed extremely comfortable and people friendly and helpful. How nice it was to enjoy a drink outside our room after a day of touring York with a snack in the shade. Being right beside the cathedral was a bonus. Late check in was no problem and staff stored our luggage safely after checkout.

The age and character of the building. Staff very pleasant.

We stayed in the Belfry Suite (in the attic above the pub). This was by far the most unique room we have ever stayed in. The sweet includes a bedroom, bathroom, a living room, and a room that we used as an office. Low slanted ceilings with beams, brass fixtures, wooden furniture, velvet curtains & ottoman, cracked leather couches, wool blankets - the colors and textures in this room add so much to the experience of staying there. There was a mini fridge and electric kettle available for use. The wifi and television worked great. Location is only a few steps away from shops/food/Shambles. There is a Tesco Express & a Sainsbury's nearby. The pub staff are very friendly here, the food is good, the atmosphere is very comfortable. We ordered breakfast on our last day. The food was good ( we got the Full Yorkshire & the pancakes with strawberry compote and clotted cream). They also serve you coffee or tea, and there is a side table with juices and cereals- all included in the breakfast price. Housekeeping does a great job, and are very friendly.
**There are a LOT of stairs to get up to this room. And once you unlock your door, there are MORE stairs and it is a very steep and narrow staircase. Not everyone will be comfortable getting up those steps. Also, the ceilings are low and slanted. If you are tall (and even if you're not!), you will be hitting your head constantly. All of that being said, this room is AMAZING and we would rent it again in a heartbeat! HIGHLY recommended!

My room (5) at Guy Fawkes Inn was small, but comfortable. It had plenty of power outlets for charging my devices. The radiator in the room was perfect, but the one in the bathroom did not work. The bed was very comfortable. The room could stand a bit of a deep cleaning. The check-in process was a bit chaotic as the check-in staff also manage the bar and the restaurant. The location of the Inn within York is brilliant. When preparing to leave, I asked for a taxi to be called … I was told that there was no need because right around the corner was a taxi stand that was manned 24 hours a day. After checkout, I went to the taxi stand … I waited 45 minutes for a cab to the station.
The restaurant at the Inn was excellent with a varied menu including vegetarian and vegan options. The on tap berry cider was delicious.

A fantastic place to stay. The steak pie was fabulous too!

Not so great.. for the money we paid we were disappointed. The decor was really nice but the finishing touches just weren’t there. There wasn’t a proper check in desk or staff, it was a waiter at the bar you spoke to on arrival, they were all quite young and seemed uninterested while you were stood in the way of everyone at the bar with your luggage. They didn’t have information that I had already paid via hotels.com so asked me for payment then had to check that I actually had paid. When checking out, they were all talking amongst themselves and took the keycard off me without asking how our stay was etc. The shower was either scalding hot or freezing. Kettle had a lot of grit and limescale in so we didn’t use. Glasses had lipstick and water marks on. Not a terrible stay but wouldn’t stay here again and certainly not worth the price we paid. Bare in mind the noise from the bar will go on until 11pm but we weren’t too fussed about this. Great location right next to the Minster.

A really great place. We had the top floor with the brass tub and windows looking right out at the cathedral. Very quirky decor and not at all suitable for those with mobility issues, but one of my all-time fave hotel rooms.
