About this house rental
Summary:
Fossil Knob Ridge One: Relax is Style at this Ultra-Modern Container Home Near Terlingua Ghost Town
The Space:
High Clearance Vehicle Recommended due to rough and rocky roads.
Book your vacation at the ultimate modern vacation rentals in the rugged outback of the Big Bend region. In a land of endless mountain and desert vistas that is famed for ghost town ruins, rustic adobes, and Old West ranch homes, the Fossil Knob Ridge vacation rentals offer a unique contrast. The ultra-modern vacation rentals at Fossil Knob Ridge are contemporary homes built from recycled shipping containers. Yes, you read that right. These vacation rental homes are constructed from big metal boxes that were originally used for transporting cargo across the globe on trains and ocean freighters. The owner purchased them from a shipping company and converted them into contemporary and stylish living spaces. Don’t worry though, they are far more than just metal boxes with some furniture. Indeed, these homes offer the most neoteric lodging in the Terlingua area.
The Chisos House is an ultra-modern home built from two recycled shipping containers, one forty feet long and one twenty feet long. They are joined together at a 90° angle around a large, shaded patio. The forty contains the living room, dining area, and kitchen. The twenty contains the bathroom and bedroom. Modern design, styling, and art are featured inside and out. Please view the photos for the best description.
Chisos House sleeps two to three guests. The bedroom has a king-sized bed and the living room has a sofa. The sofa does not fold out but it can be used for one person to sleep on. If you have a larger group, or simply want more space, there are five modern vacation rental homes at Fossil Knob Ridge. We'd be happy to rent you more than one. Check out the other Fossil Knob Ridge listings. You are welcome to rent as many as you want.
All four of the Fossil Knob Ridge Rentals are on the electric grid for reliable and ample electric power. Both are fully air-conditioned and heated and have modern electric appliances. Potable water is trucked in and stored in holding tanks for your use. There is plenty of water available but trucking it in is expensive. We ask that you conserve it, but not so much as to compromise your comfort.
Located just one mile northwest of the world famous Terlingua Ghost Town and twenty miles northwest of the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park. Fossil Knob Ridge overlooks the Ghost Town and has breathtaking mountain views, including the Chisos Mountains and into Mexico.
Relax inside the house or on the shaded patio. Explore the fossil strewn 20 acre property. Drive or walk into the Ghost Town to explore the historic ruins, dine, drink, enjoy live music, or hang out with local and travelers from around the globe. If you play an instrument or sing, join in on an impromptu jam, session on the porch of the old trading post. Drive into Big Bend Nation Park or Big Bend Ranch State park for endless outdoor adventures. Book a river trip, jeep tour, horseback ride, mountain bike rental, guided hike, or guided hunt. Enjoy a controlled campfire. Marvel at the night skies. Watch the stunning sunrises and sunsets. Do as much or as little as you like. Then, come back again and do even more or less.

We stayed 3 nights and had an amazing time! The beautiful sunrises, morning hikes looking at fossils and plants on the acreage, evenings by the fire, grilling at sunset with Mountain View’s! We had everything we needed and it was great being so close to Terlingua Ghost town and a short scenic drive to Lajitas..great spot!!

Property is exactly as described. Very comfortable stay with great views. The road up to the property is extremely rough. The property is worth the rough road.
Has everything you need! Enjoyed our stay very much.

What a quiet & peaceful place to celebrate my husband's 60th birthday! Terlingua has been on our bucket list for quiet some time, and we finally got to experience what everyone has been raving about! Chisos was absolutely beautiful. The kitchen was fully stocked with the essentials, and had everything we needed to cook a fabulous meal. The directions to Fossil Ridge were very detailed and helped so much! As previous reviews mentioned, make sure you have an all terrain vehicle. The last mile or so is extremely rocky, and you will want to take your time navigating the rocky path during daylight if possible! We will definitely recommend Fossil Ridge to family & friends, and can't wait to visit again!

The Chisos house at Fossil Knob Ridge was clean and comfortable. Loved staying in the container converted to a house with beautiful views of Terlingua and the Chisos mountains. We had everything we needed and greatly enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the property. Highly recommend and we will be back!

We absolutely loved this shipping container unit! It had everything we needed for our trip! Such a peaceful place to stay- The night skies were breathtaking - and the town of Terlingua was so much fun! We could easily have stayed another week!
Make sure to bring some extra drinking water so you don't use all of the water at the rental.
Please heed the information about the drive up - the last leg of the road is quite bumpy - it's doable in a smaller SUV like we had.. but a Truck or higher SUV would be preferable.

Property itself and location were amazing. A bit scary going up but very much worth the location. the container home was absolutely beautiful and peaceful. Only unsatisfactory item was the surprise $100.00+ charge for using VRBO above what was already paid for the rental of the property.

House is beautiful and super clean with all the amenities - Gorgeous Sunrise views from inside and out side, great directions to the site, definitely need a vehicle with somewhat high clearance. Highly Recommend - will come back :)

Perfect Getaway!
I had the best time at Fossil Knob Ridge! The instructions were great and close enough to hike everyday in Big Bend National Park. As a single female staying alone, I felt very safe in the remote atmosphere. The property manager was extremely helpful on more than one occasion. I did have to work one afternoon, and the WiFi held up great. I cooked most meals at the house, but the local breakfast spot and bar were great too. I can’t wait to be back and bring my son!

Great container mountain cabin
Off the grid, but close to Terlingua ghost town with some cool restaurants and bars. The road up is rocky and bumpy, much better in a higher clearance vehicle. Great location for sunrises, sunsets, stars, and Big Bend State Parks for hiking and mountain biking.

Spectacular!
Great hosts - we were able to seamlessly cancel our trip 2 years ago due to COVID restrictions. This year we rented Chisos and our friends rented 248. The location and accommodations exceeded our expectations. The view of the night sky and Milky Way were a highlight. We did not realize the property was part of the Dark Sky program with McDonald observatory until we went there; now we know why the outdoor lights are red!

Great rental property overlooking the Big Bend mountain range
We spent 4 wonderful days in Fossil Knob Ridge Chisos house. It's a very innovative, modern, clean rental place that offers everything you need for your stay. Property owners are easy to communicate with and easy to reach.
Beautiful view of mountains, sunrise and dark sky to few the stars at night!

Location is fantastic and views incredible! Went for the skies at night and hiking. Absolutely worth the experience. Communication with property manager seamless.

Relaxing stay
The cabin is small, clean, and comfy. 1 bed and a couch sleeper. The couch is rough (hard) on an adult. The drive up the mountain to the cabin takes time and patience. You better have a truck or an SUV that can take the rough rocky road. But once you make it up, the views are amazing.

Perfect Big Bend Get-away!
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of staying at this property! The house was clean and modern and the views (the stars, the sunrise, the Chisos) were amazing! I've been a fan of Big Bend for many years now, but my wife had never been; however, thanks to these accommodations and the spectacular surroundings, she's a fan now too!

Wonderful stay!!
This is a fun, quiet, comfortable place to stay right between the National and State Parks and enjoy Terlingua. The night sky is beautiful, and we loved the patio and outdoor amenities. Plus the kitchen was great to make all of our meals. The bed was dreamy and we loved all the comforts of home in the unique container home. Loved it all!

A Well Designed Home with a Spectacular View
We loved the beautiful, well designed home made from shipping containers. The home was beautiful and took full advantage of a spectacular view with full length windows the length of the house. The kitchen, living area, bedroom and bathroom well artfully decorated, clean and well maintained. The outside has a gorgeous view with a nice fire ring, grill and comfortable seating. A wonderful place to sit by the fire and watch a million stars come out at night. This is a great place to stay. We will definitely return.

Great location and view!
The view of Big Bend and the Chisos Mountains from the front of this property was amazing! We got to see the sunrise every morning and it was spectacular! The location was great in terms of being close to Big Bend. The 1.5 mile drive up to the house takes time as the road is quite bumpy and we were glad they encouraged driving a high clearance vehicle. The property manager was helpful and responsive.

Comfort and space in remote West Texas
This property was exactly as advertised - there were no surprises whatsoever. The owners were great about communicating up front, and were extremely flexible about accommodating potential changes to travel due to COVID restrictions on the nearby Big Bend National Park a month out. The location is perfect -- close enough to the park that it's an easy drive in for day hikes, but remote enough that you're not dealing with lots of noise and light pollution, which is particularly welcomed amidst the big, beautiful dark skies out there. We loved it so much, we booked a return trip before the first one was over!

A Great Experience
I cannot say enough good things about our stay - what a cool setup. This was our 2nd time to the Big Bend area - Fossil Knob Ridge made this visit a special visit. It was quite apparent that the owners invested a piece of themselves when completing their project - you can feel their heart and soul in the place. If you get the chance - stay here while visiting Big Bend.

"Glamping" at its best
Fun location at top of ridge in Terlingua. Well appointed with everything you need for a day of adventure and evenings to relax. Plenty of privacy and great vistas from all sides. Dark night skies really show off the stars but you'll have to stay up until at least 10pm to allow darkness to really settle in. Then get ready for a show.

Relaxation with a beautiful view!
This property exceeded our expectations in just about every way! Amazing view facing Big Bend National Park, plenty of room to relax, and very accessible to Terlingua and the surrounding areas. The owners were very responsive and availed themselves to any questions we had as well as provided some very helpful recommendations for the drive down and activities around the area.
The only other thing we wanted to mention was the closeness of the other FKR property next door (it sits about 20ish yards next door). There was a group of three staying next to the two of us and we would occasionally hear them moving around, laughing, coming/going from the property, etc. Not really a huge deal for us, but something to note for people seeking a completely remote experience with no other 'people' distractions.
We definitely hope to return again to FKR! It really made our Big Bend trip a special memory.

Unique!
Our stay was great, everything as expected! The view is breathtaking! WiFi is impressive! Found the rental to be well equipped! Loved sitting out on the porch and using the fire pit at night! The road up to the unit was not that difficult...just follow the directions!
Happy to say we found the containers to be a comfy, cozy little niche in Terlingua!

Beautiful and comfortable
Very comfortable accommodations with everything you need for a relaxing time. The views are spectacular especially at sun rise and sunset! Come in a truck or SUV. Plan to drive up your first time in daylight! After the first drive up it is much easier!

Fossil Knob in Early December
I have been coming to Big Bend on a regular basis for over 20 years. We have stayed at the Mountain Lodge, various hotels in Terlingua, and camped. Fossil Knob Ridge was by far the best accommodations we've had. The view from the main house of the Chisos Mountains is spectacular! They have all the amenities you need. Very comfortable and well appointed. The pictures on their site don't lie, it's as nice as it looks!

Awesome
An amazing experience. We loved being off the map. It was too cloudy for stars but the views from the house were phenomenal. Enjoyed the outdoor living space and the modern comforts inside. Easy access to Big Bend. Just make sure you are comfortable driving on gravel roads in mountainous terrain! We drove in after dark - I had no idea how steep the drop offs were until we came back down the next morning! Hope to come back.

Amazing!
The property is exactly as represented in the listing - and is a perfectly comfortable oasis to retire to at the end of the day. Comfy furnishings and well appointed - we weren't needing a thing! There was nothing better at the end of a day of exploring, than to sit by the firepit with a glass of wine and wonder at the stars and the Milky Way! Perfect in every way!

West Texas Paradise
We had a wonderful stay at Fossil Knob Ridge! We needed a place to stay for a few days after camping in BBNP and it had everything we needed/wanted to make our stay comfortable. The view is absolutely beautiful (a perfect view of Mule Ears and the Chisos) and we loved the location, close enough for dinner at the Starlight but far enough away that you felt completely isolated. Seeing the milky way at night was breathtaking! We are already planning our next visit!
