Sixteen family members ranging from age two to sixty-eight all enjoyed this home. It's large with three levels (not handicapped accessible except the bottom floor) and a lovely cabin style inside. It has been well loved by the owner's family and has many travel mementos and trophies inside. This gives it a lot of character. It's so large, it's hard to keep everything spotless and dust free, but the bedrooms, bathrooms, and kitchen were all clean. The A/C went out while we were there, but the manager had someone come out and it was repaired as soon as possible. It's near the National Park, and we enjoyed several other activities suggested by the host. There aren't a lot of restaurants in the immediate vicinity, but the nearby wineries and brewhouse offer simple meals, and larger restaurants are only about fifteen to twenty minutes away.

The property is beautiful. The house is like stepping into a museum with very unique decor. The kids loved the game room and fishing in the pond. The kitchen is well stocked with everything for cooking meals. My only complaint was a lack of linens for the bunkroom and flat pillows in almost every bedroom. I called the host but only heard a busy signal. You cannot call anyone on your cells from the house, no service, had to use the house phone to try to reach her. Fortunately for us a daughter was arriving the next day and brought us linens. We were a family of 16 but 2 of the kids slept on air mattresses which we brought because the bunkroom had 4 boys aged 12 to 15 who could not share double mattresses with their girl cousins. There is a futon downstairs which came in handy. Firepit was perfect for s'mores and the air conditioning worked great. Bathrooms were spotless and well stocked with toilet paper. Very unique also! We had a wonderful time!

Had a wonderful time. The house is very eclectic, rustic, and visually applealing. Love the set up and all the bathrooms. There was evidence of it not being as clean as it could have been, and the stove top did not work well. But, overall, it was a great weekend and beautiful place to stay in the mountains.

We celebrated our 50th weddng anniversary with our family. Ages from 4 to 92. We enjoyed the view (would be better without the 2 trees!), the fishing, the woods. We found a swimming hold in the Shenandoah Nat'l Park not far from the house and we all enjoyed it.

Great location-beautiful setting. Darden was great! Thank you!

the house design and setting was perfect for our family group of 13. age range 8 to 80 celebrating 2 family birthdays. there were enough bedrooms and bathrooms for all of us.Plenty of hot water. The firepit was great.
the view was outstanding as was the location.
So suggestions for me to give it 5 stars. 1) shampoo and conditioner in bathrooms 2) toilet paper for all bathrooms 3) paper towels in kitchen. 4) kitchen towels 5) put pots with matching lids in same cabinets 6)the decks needed cleaning possibly some new cushions. these are not big ticket items, but I think they make a big difference.

The owners and property manager are super friendly and helpful! The property itself is picturesque and has everything you need. It is clean, tons of space, gorgeous views, directions for nearby restaurants, vineyards, hikes anything you could want. If looking for the perfect getaway this is it. Thank you all so much!!

This is our 2nd trip to this house. We had a large group and it was perfect!

The property is very secluded yet not far off the main road. Open large kitchen/living/dining room with ample seating and space for 14 adults and two small children.. Kitchen is well appointed and we appreciated the huge island area. Bedrooms are large and we were able to accommodate 2 portacribs easily. I was confused about bathrooms as it is listed in one place as 4-1/2 (which is what it is ) but also as 5 and 6 bathrooms in other places within listing. Bathrooms are very large and easily shared but only 2 are accessible without entering a bedroom. One of those does not have a shower only a bathtub. Essentially if you have adults in the loft which sleeps 6 they would need to share one of 3 showers and the 2 adults in the bedroom next to the bathroom with only a tub would also need to share one of 3 bathrooms with showers. This was not a problem with our group of mostly 30 somethings but it could pose an issue for some. Having said all of that, we made it work and loved this stunning obviously well loved and cared for home.

We come to Virginia every year with a group of friends and it is increasingly challenging to find a property with enough bedrooms, bathrooms and great gathering and cooking space. Sun Dancer really fits the bill and we very much enjoyed our stay. Beautiful views from the large deck and lots of nice extra features like a fire pit area to enjoy outside. Kitchen well equipped with plenty of dishes and things to cook with. Eclectic decor and interesting art and collections!

Mixed Experience
Overall, our family enjoyed this property for a week in summer 2022. It is a very spacious house with a well-equipped kitchen and big dining table in the main living space which was very nice for our large family of over 10 people. There were nice areas for the whole group to gather, but plenty of places to spread out too. We especially liked the fire pit, corn hole, and fishing pond. The host provided a lot of helpful information, which we appreciated. We hiked around the property and visited other nearby sites.
We found that certain parts of the house seemed neglected and were not as nice or clean as the other parts of the house, such as the loft area (generally messy and dirty with no beds made up, we never did find the correct linens) and the furniture on the large patio (many pieces were dirty and not well-kept). These areas could use upgrades to match the rest of the house. From the conversation, it seems some of the beds in the house are definitely more comfortable than others. Cell service and wifi were both poor, which wasn't all bad, but still is worth noting.

Great place to stay photos don't do it justice
Great place to stay wished we could have done more in the woods but being mid summer bugs were a little rough and very hot and muggy. Would definitely go back if I were the host I'd get so new photos to show the place off better we were pleasantly surprised upon arrival. Just a like any VRBO stay a few things weren't perfect (stovetop was cracked and damaged but worked fine). Fishing pond was fun and we caught lots of bass lots of bugs would love to go in fall.

Christmas family reunion
Sun Dancer was perfect for our three generation family gathering of fourteen ranging in age from ten to early 80s. The inside was very roomy and reflected an eclectic decor from other cultures, countries, and the beautiful Shenandoah countryside where it is. Plenty of activities were available inside and the pond and Old Rag Mountain provided wonderful experiences for all on the outside The only challenges were finding bedding for the loft bunks and a can opener that worked. We had a lovely and memorable stay!

Quiet location with awesome views
Our family enjoyed our post-Christmas celebration at Sun Dancer. Our family enjoys hiking so a few had to go up Old Rag (while it was a challenging hike they were impressed with the views). Darden was very accommodating and the house fit our needs perfectly. If you want to get away, this fits the bill.

So much fun in a beautiful setting. House had lots of room and lots of bathrooms. Loved the shuffleboard and corn hole games provided by the host. Great location for hiking and access to the national park. Great place to celebrate with our family.

Fabulous!
The house was so comfortable and had everything you could need to host a large gathering! The property is gorgeous and everyone enjoyed hiking and exploring the surrounding land. Our 6 year old grandson particularly enjoyed the fossils and other interesting artifacts around the house. He said it was like a mini museum and he loved it!
Thank you you for such a wonderful experience! We will definitely be back! ❤

Fantastic location for a family gathering
We spent the weekend together as a group of cousins who don't get to see each other as often as we'd like. The location was perfect, quiet and rather isolated with lots of room for the younger kids to explore outside without us having to worry about them. We made all of our meals at the house and had plenty of room to cook and sit down and eat as a family. The kitchen was fully stocked with all of the things we needed but if you like to "set it and forget it" there is not a crock pot so pack it with you if that's your plan. There were plenty of pots, pans, plates, glasses, mugs, silverware and everything else you can think of. The younger kids all stayed together in the bunk room and we could hear their happy giggles all night which was awesome! Cell service was pretty poor for us but we did use the wifi and it worked well until we had like 15 people logged onto it all at the same time so as long as you don't treat it like a pack elephant and overload it, it should work just fine for you. Fire side chats, playing cornhole in the driveway, fishing at the pond, and so much more enhanced our visit. We thought there was a hot tub but I think we might've misread that somewhere else and confused the listing but there is not a hot tub. There's a nice little hike to a pavilion that they call Cocktail Hill. You can't see the sunset from there like the description says as the clearing faces south but it's still a nice little hike and we enjoyed it anyway. We didn't feel like we missed out at all though because the night sky treated us to a show every night with a million stars! The gentleman that runs the little general store right in Etlan is such a pleasant and kind person and he was the icing on our visit! All in all, we had a great time and everyone in the group remarked about how great the place was and how perfect the location was for our weekend. Darden was super easy to get into contact with before our trip and everything was so clearly outlined in the packets provided that we never needed to get in touch with her during the weekend. This place was PERFECT and we absolutely loved it!!!

A quick weekend hunting in the area
This was home base for a quick weekend getaway hunting with Thorton Hill Hounds. Great location for that purpose- be prepared with food and beverage before you get there- Nothing is close by! The loft could use some upgrading. In comparison to the other rooms it was privative. Mattress were unmade, no mattress pads except the crinkly waterproof one for kids. Bed linens were provided- not on as in other rooms and were dated and didn't fit. It was used for mom and 2 kids and was not really suitable for any. Otherwise- house was beautiful! Kitchen useful and well stocked. Sunrise from the deck was great. Overall a great space- just don't count on the loft for anyone other than a kid that is not particular.

Beautiful views and perfect space for family getaway
We really enjoyed our stay. The views are absolutely breathtaking and the lodge is great for quality time and being able to spread out. The kitchen is a really nice entertaining space and the living room and dining room have ample space, as well. Our only challenges were it’s a little dark, recommend more lighting in the kitchen and some mattress pads on most of the beds because they are a tad hard which makes sleeping uncomfortable if you’re sensitive to that. Otherwise, a great experience!

Great place for a family get away
We had a great time at Sun Dancer Lodge. The location is great for cycling, hiking, and tubing. We spent most days out doors and hanging out on the deck. The house was very spacious and seemed to have most everything. The only thing we thought it could use was a second fridge. We had a big group and filled up our fridge way too easily. The internet is satellite and so not very fast or useful for big groups, but they mention this and we are use to this sort of internet where we live. There is not really any cell service either so just keep that in mind. Again, this was fine (almost a good thing or all the kids to get off their phones) but made it tricky for last minute information and researching hikes and such. The owners were very prompt in responding to us and helpful with the few requests that we did have. We had a lovely time and hope to be back again.

Loved the size and location!
Highlights of what we liked about Sun Dancer: loved the size, spacious rooms, enough bedrooms and bathrooms for the 10 of us, nice kitchen, dining room and living room, great layout to allow for us to spread out and be in different locations in the house. Our fishing fans enjoyed the beautiful pond and we all enjoyed the views! Its location enabled us to get to our spots of interest in an hour:
hiking trails, Shenandoah River for tubing, and Monticello.

Excellent property and hosts
We had a very large family with ages ranging from 10 months to 60 years and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the house. The home is a little older so has some quirks like some of the bathroom doors dont lock easily, the upper deck door comes off its rails often, etc. and since it is in the middle of nowhere, the wifi is pretty weak but none of them were dealbreakers for us. The home was cleaned spotless and was big enough for our group and filled with unique artifacts and eclectic decorations.

Virginia Mountain Getaway
Home was clean. Plenty of space for everyone. Property manager was attentive. Pond was a good hike from the house but provided refuge and the fish were biting. Not much very close by but we found a zip line experience, wineries and an escape room. I swam in the Shenandoah River and our 2 year old swam in the stream at the end of the road. We tried the property loop trail but never found the stream. We missed the outdoor shower. House was set up well for our family group of 12.

Very cool decorations in the house. Spacious and inviting inside and out! Not a complaint, just a suggestion :) —> everyone in the party agreed that the view would be so much better without the two trees at the entrance of the driveway. :) Loved seeing and hearing cows, roosters, birds… the deck was the best place to hang out. Again, not a complaint, but wanted to let future guests know to prepare —> After hiking around the property, we found a lot of ticks on us, even though we put bug spray on, so make sure you check yourselves many times over! Overall an awesome spot! We enjoyed our stay!

A fantastic spot to meet out in the Shenandoah valley. Not too far from a good hike, but comfortable enough to enjoy a night in. Front porch has a spectacular view, especially when the sky is clear. Renter was very responsive, and recommend following their directions.

Great Property at a Gorgeous location
If you want to disconnect from the daily hustle and get some quiet time in a serene property this is the place to go to. The family totally enjoyed the location and will definitely go back there next time. One minor suggestion would be to have more adult games like pool or have a swimming pool. Otherwise was a great location.

Beautiful setting!
We had a wonderful stay at Sun Dancer Lodge! We were looking for a quiet location with pretty views to spend family time together over the holidays and this place was perfect. The owner was wonderful to work with, was accommodating and responsive to questions. The place itself was very spacious, and the views from the den were beautiful. There was room for all of us at the large dinner table. We were able to take advantage of the fireplace inside and the fire pit outside which was wonderful on cold December evenings. The downstairs had a spacious rec room with games and another tv. And our walks on the property were filled with beautiful sunsets and scenery. We would recommend this to anyone wanting to get away from it all and enjoy some quiet time away. We hope to be back!

Oh, the peace and quiet!
Location, location, location!!! If you enjoy the outdoors (and a cozy fireplace if the weather takes a turn), this is the place for you! Close to Luray and Shenandoah Nat'l Park. Also didn't take us too long to get to downtown Culpeper for lunch one day. The catch-and-release pond is fantastic! The kids got a couple bites, and they loved the experience.
