We were impressed with the listing & it did not disappoint. In fact, I’m not sure the 2nd/back patio was even advertised. Pleasant surprises all around this place, definitely just for a couple.

We stayed in the second floor of the lampshade house in beautiful La Jolla. Great bed, shower and tub - all first rate. Night breeze off the water was soothing and we did not need air conditioning during the day. Windows open and a small fan made it very enjoyable. Sunsets on the balcony are not to be missed. Use of the garage was perfect as this is a busy area to street park - be cautious, we rented a Mini Cooper which fit great, the downstairs group had an Audi A4 which fit, barely - don't expect to park a full size car or larger SUV.

The photos of the balcony do not do this place justice. You are right at the waterfront with a fantastic view from sunrise to sunset. Close to everything. 10 to 15 mins walk to all restaurants. This place is ideal for 2 people. Good for breakfast and lunch but not really suitable to cook a main dinner as only a kitchenette as shown, with a portable hot plate. Good barbecue set up out the back though if you want to book up some steaks. We had dinner out every night so was a perfect set up for us. I would definitely rent this place again! Will be back

I will start with all the bad things first. The parking is t good if you don’t have a tiny car. I have a Jeep Gladiator and it wouldn’t fit in the garage, so I parked in the drive way at night and K got a 75.00 dollar ticket. The house is visibly very, very clean but it does smell. Now this could have been because it hadn’t been opened up in awhile when we got there. It has a huge walk in closet but like 3 hangers. Which pretty much makes the closet useless. Then there is the wierd toilet. It couldn’t be in a worse place in the bathroom and it constantly opens and closes. Absolutely no other complaints inside the house at all..Now if you are a person that likes to sleep in, you can for get that! Trash trucks come down the street at 6am everyday picking up and slamming down cans, back up beepers loud as hell, and because of the awesome location of the house these trucks are about 30’ from your bed!
Now that I am done complaining.. My family had ABSOLUTELY THE BEST TIME I have ever had in California in my entire life staying at this home. It is a beautiful space, the house is very clean, the location couldn’t be more perfect if you want to be by the water! The views are impressive to say the least. The online photos make it appear as though the house is sitting high up on a 3 or 400 foot cliff it’s not at all. It’s maybe 50 to 75 feet high. Either way there are ample paths to walk down to the beach. I ran out f space to write. Sorry! Rent it!!!!! It’s well worth it!!!!!

We are very familiar with La Jolla so we knew the location was outstanding when we booked. But the pictures here do not do the charm of this place justice! The description mentions that it's not a 5 star hotel and it's not - but it is definitely a 5 star experience staying here! I could sit on the balcony and people/dog watch all day!
We will be back and in fact hope to come with a group and rent both units. Thanks for sharing this amazing place with us!

We loved everything about our stay here. The location is perfect...just steps from the ocean. And since it can get busy there, the garage parking was very convenient. Everything was in great condition, the bed was very comfortable, and the owner was flexible and quick to respond. We'll definitely be staying here again.

This was one of the coolest places we have stayed. The location and view was perfect for our trip. We walked along the coast every morning to see the seals, sea lions and birds. It has an unobstructed view of the sunset from the balcony. Bathroom was huge! Tub and shower very nice. We were pleased. Stairs are not as bad as the look. You basically see all that are there - looks intimidating but it’s not. Very quiet area but close to everything at the same time. We hated to leave. Don’t hesitate to book this property.

I went to La Jolla for spring break and stayed with my teenagers. We loved the gorgeous marble bathroom and automated bidet. The bed was very comfortable with plenty of blankets and pillows for comfort. The location is perfect. I would definitely go back.

We've stayed at many VRBOs over the years and this was our favorite! The property was spacious and spotless and the view from the balcony was absolutely spectacular! The pictures don't even do it justice. The bathroom was huge and had wonderful fixtures and features. The bed and bedding were extremely comfortable. The kitchen is small, but we weren't planning to cook while we were there. Basically we wanted to have fruit and yogurts in the fridge for breakfast and snacks and wine for happy hour. And boy, did we enjoy happy hour! Sitting on the balcony watching the sunset over the Pacific can't be beat! We also really appreciated having a garage parking spot. Street parking is hard to find in La Jolla, and it was great to have our own spot. The location of the apartment was fantastic. We took long walks along the Coast Walk right from our front door. We could walk to all of the restaurants, the seal and sea lion beaches, etc. If we return to La Jolla again we will definitely try to stay in the Lampshade House again!

The Lampshade House is a truly iconic property in LaJolla, CA. We stayed in the second floor unit, with 180 degree views of the ocean and coastline, within sight of seal beach and nearby LaJolla Cove. This is a highly walkable location, within easy reach of restaurants, shops, beaches and the Museum of Contemporary art. We were there eight days and did not miss not having a car.

The property is very clean. The stairs are a lot though but it is very clear in the pictures. The parking is really tight I have a sedan and it was a struggle to fit in the space. Otherwise the stay was great, the room was clean and the bathroom was fabulous.

Place was perfect with incredible views and access to the beach and trails. Falling asleep to the sound of the ocean can’t be beat! Owner was so responsive to any messages. The whole stay was definitely a 10/10

We had a wonderful 2 nights at this beachfront property. It’s just like the photos show. The kitchen is lacking if you intend to cook for yourself, but the number of great restaurants within walking distance are fantastic. I am the cook at home and I wasn’t going to miss out on a couple days not cooking… The space is romantic and very quiet. Beautiful balcony of course. The garage is tight if you have more than one car using it. We were lucky and had it to ourselves and barely fit in a large SUV. Overall, we will rebook this location on our twice yearly trip to San Diego/La Jolla.

My husband and I had a lovely and relaxing stay at the lampshade. It was perfect for the two of us and the location was superb! The views were incredible and we could walk everywhere. Overall the experience was amazing! Communication with Simon was great. Two minor issues: the toilet has a mind of its own (it’s computerized) and we didn’t realize and there wasn’t clear communication about the code to the second door to our unit and if that entrance was shared with the other unit. We discovered is was shared after we left our shoes and wallet (briefly) in the shared entrance. But again, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The house was beautifully furnished and had such an exceptional view. It was a very easy walk to anywhere we wanted to go, even with my 77 year old mom. Any time we had a question or need, Simon responded immediately and kindly. My mom loved that there was extra linens for the shower and extra blankets for the bed. Previous reviews mentioned a smell. I believe that had to have been before new flooring because there was no smell at all. My mom and sister are already saying they want to book another trip and stay in the same house. If you’re considering it, do it!

Outstanding location, quiet area in La Jolla, great place to walk/run next to the beach everyday.
Lots of great food options close by.
Tons of beaches within a short drive North or South to explore. Snorkeling, surfing, SUP options everywhere.
Saw Sea Lions, Dolphins, multiple birds (including humming birds)
Close to San Diego, make sure to check out the food in Little Italy.
Sunsets are the most beautiful end or start to your evening.
Hosts are amazing and attentive.

Unfortunately, we found the accommodations to be subpar. The place was not clean. We found several items left from previous guests which indicated that the staff had not cleaned the drawers prior to our arrival. There was a half bottle of wine with the neck broken and left in the fridge....why? It's unfortunate since the location is superb. It is one of the best in La Jolla. Because of these and other reasons, I cannot recommend nor would we ever return to this particular property. I cannot believe this has a 5 star rating.

We loved our stay here. It was perfect from the view and the most comfortable bed ever, to the climate and atmosphere surrounding this place. We were able to contact our host, Simon any time we had a need or question and got a quick response each time. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Thanks Simon!

The views from this property were spectacular! It was very clean and had everything we needed. We appreciated being able to park in the garage. The host Simon was very responsive when we checked in and everything was perfect so no need to contact him again. Great restaurants within walking distance. "The Kitchen" at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego had a creative and delicious breakfast and lunch menu. We'd definitely book this again!

There is not enough space here for me to fully describe this experience but I will be writing to VRBO separately. In essence, the view was spectacular but the unit itself was unbearable. It was stinky, musty, and mildewy with little to no ventilation even with the windows open. There were used toiletries in the bathroom drawers as well as trash in the bathroom trash can when we arrived. The vent was covered in a thick layer of grime and dust and clearly hadn't been cleaned in months. Rust, tarnish, and dirt lurked in every corner and neither the patio nor balcony had been swept. The frayed wiring to the fire alarm system was open and hanging down drooping unattached wires everywhere. The panel was not locked and clearly was not in working order. The soap dish was full of mold/dirt and the patio chairs were filthy and stacked in a corner. There were drips and spills on the staircase as well. In fact, it was so unpleasant that my mother and I couldn't bear to stay another night and drove two and a half hours back to the desert the next morning. The view was indeed spectacular but the experience certainly was not. I have photos that are time stamped and dated to back up all of these claims. I am extremely disappointed in the owner's response to what I think is a fair solution. Be very wary before spending your money on such an uncomfortable and unclean living environment. An old house is one thing but a neglected house is another.

It was the perfect getaway. The view from the balcony was amazing. We spent hours just sitting and relaxing. The kitchen didn't have a stove but there is a grill and flat top on the back balcony. But also, i had no intention of cooking so it was fine. The floor was a little dirty and the rug needed a vacuum, but the character of the place made up for it.

So, I wasn't actually going to write this because there were a few problems with this property. But since I received a reminder to post it from the host here goes. Plus side: VIEW, location for sure, dogs allowed. Negatives: amenities (coffee, towels, shampoo, etc) were definitely subpar. Old used shampoo bottles, no body wash or other type of soap (no washcloths either). We had to scrounge around in the empty downstairs unit for some basic items. However, all that said, for a couple, the views and the location were not to be beat (there is a larger unit downstairs). Also, when we were there unit was very quiet. If you have a large truck, the parking garage will NOT work and you will have to either be gone all day or move your vehicle every 2 hours if there is another lodger). For dog ppl. beaches close by do not allow dogs during daytime hours. There were a few broken items on the property, but we were able to deal with them.

When we first arrived we weren’t sure if the cleaners were done cleaning or not. There was a cabinet door open, blankets disheveled in the closet, and the door to the balcony was open. I contacted the owner about our check-in but never received a response. Everything appeared to be clean so we just unpacked to begin our vacation.
We could walk to many places, but we don’t mind walking a mile or more for dining.
The pictures accurately represent this rental. We totally enjoyed our visit and had everything we needed while we were there. You are just steps from the ocean, but there is no need to leave your room to enjoy it!
