It was very comfortable with a kitchen, great bathtub for soaking in, and a a record player with a nice assortment of records to peruse. I'll most definitely stay there again.

The bed was comfortable. The room had nice wall prints as a decoration. The price was better than most (for that area during the high travel season).
The location is about 30 minutes of highway driving from Hilo. The place needs to be cleaned more thoroughly and possibly some caulking applied to limit insects from coming in. There is a lot of tropical vegetation in the area which is nice but which means that there are insects as well as many, many LOUD coqui frogs. After arriving there, we realized that that whole area has many, many of them. The windows were not sound proof and the kitchen side had a door with a screen window on the side. The kitchen is open to nature (which is nice while having breakfast). I slept 4 hours the first night, even with earplugs (I always travel with earplugs). The second and third nights I slept better because I bought better quality earplugs as well as earmuffs from a hardware store. Also, the electrical seems a bit sketchy because the lights on one wall flickered when my husband took a shower (a possible sign of an overloaded circuit). I found out on the second day that the water in that area is catchment water and filtered and not provided by the municipality. I would have appreciated knowing that ahead of time. I would not say not to stay there...I know accomodation in Hawaii is expensive and we were glad to find something so last-minute, but I think travelers should be aware of these issues ahead of time.

There was a record player with old Hawaiian vinyl records that added to the mood, and a gorgeous bathroom that we really appreciated after camping. Even the overhead fan was hand carved to suit the Hawaiian castaway oasis aesthetic. Gilligans Island, eat your heart out. Now you can feel like you have been shipwrecked on a deserted island but with all the luxuries!
The open air kitchen was spotlessly clean, with all the amenities and a morning visit by a friendly hen who left us a fresh egg - look under the stove, near the microwave for a breakfast egg delivery!
Nothing at all. Totally fab!
We got lost on the night of our arrival (we came late in the evening) but the owner was very helpful. Use Google Maps instead of Apple Maps, which takes you too far down the road.

This is a very unique property and is an experience. I felt like I just emerged from a week in the jungle surrounded by peeping frogs, birds, geckos and more. I really did feel in touch with life in Puna.
Everything about this property is infused with the owner's unique sensibilities. The bathtub has cooling rainwater that can drip down on you from above.
The kitchen and dining area is covered and outside which was a first for me. The geckos noticed I was cutting fruit and came to lick juices and usefully scared away the fruit flies. I enjoyed sitting at the counter and watching birds and the weather change. I wanted to really cook dinners and the owner brought over a larger skillet to use with the gas burners which worked great.
There isn't a great division between inside and outside here and that's part of the point. You acclimate to the climate and the local environment. This isn't a pristine hotel or trying to be anything like one.
The owner is very personable with great ideas for exploring the island and is generous with gear to make that a little easier (warm jackets if you plan to head to a chilly summit, etc.)
Take your time to explore the greater area as there is Volcano National Park and various great beaches within 40 min. or so but in different directions. Each day can be a new adventure and after 9 days I felt there was still much to explore and hope to return.
You're surrounded by chickens and while funny to watch, the rooster does crow early and at unpredictable times. There's no real way to drown him out when he's next to the house.

The property was very quiet, my wife and I enjoyed the nature sounds through the night
