Robert & Elizabeth were very welcoming and attentive hosts.
The property and home were lovely!
We totally enjoyed our stay and would return if we have the opportunity to visit the area in the future.

This house was great and had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. Kids ages 11/9/5 enjoyed the house. They loved the little loft area in the bedroom for some quiet time and a little secret hideout. Kitchen was great for cooking our lobster and seafood dinners. We love to cook and the kitchen was well equipped. Outdoor space was relaxing and it’s own little retreat. We enjoyed the fresh blueberries on the property. Location was perfect for easy access to Acadia, Bar Harbor, and lake access for paddle boarding. One of our best vacations to Maine yet. Thank you for letting us stay at this beautiful home.

This older ‘farmhouse’ is well maintained, well appointed and very comfortable. Everything about the property is charming. The owners live in the attached “carriage house” and are absolutely respectful of guests’ privacy. You have full access to the beautifully landscaped yard with solo stove for evening fires, comfortable chairs and picnic table for alfresco dining or relaxing. I would give this property 5+ stars except for one problem issue. The property is located on the main road to Southwest Harbor and traffic whizzes by at 50+ mph resulting in considerable traffic noise. During the warm summer nights when you need to leave windows open, we found the level of traffic noise to be disturbing until midnight and again starting up early morning (5 am). On cooler nights, when you can leave the windows closed, and using the “white noise” machines provided in each bedroom, the traffic noise would not be an issue. Other than this one concern this place is 5+ stars all around.

Comfortable home-base for my family. The outdoor area is a wonderful space with plenty of room for my kids to run around. Loved chilling in the hammock and enjoyed grilling outdoors. There’s no a/c but gets cooler some nights. We all had a wonderful stay.

We enjoyed our stay a lot. The owners were great, very helpful and welcoming!

This was an ideal property for our family of 5. We loved being outside of Bar Harbor, but inside Acadia. Elizabeth has left a book full of resources and recommendations. The house was spotless and wonderfully equipped with everything we needed. We also enjoyed the backyard area for grilling and making s’mores on the solo stove. It was a picturesque spot, and we highly recommend Captain’s Retreat!

Great Location
We had a great time staying at captains retreat. We appreciated being so close to both sides of the island. The house was clean and looked just like the photos. The owners were easy to work with both before and during our stay. It worked well for our family of 5. We only wish we could have stayed longer to explore even more of Acadia!

Girl’s Hiking Trip to Acadia
Great location. So easy to access Acadia. Cute farmhouse with beautiful yard. We loved the fire pit! Owners were great. Gave lots of good recommendations for hikes, restaurants, things to do, and secret spot for sunset. Perfect fit for our girl’s weekend.

Great time on Mt. Desert Island
We loved the location of this house, easy access to all activities on MDI. Comfortable, well equiped farmhouse with nice furniture. Didn't seem like a rental at all! Yard was huge, we enjoyed the grill, firpit, outdoor furniture and played games in the yard. Only negative was the road noise but everything else made up for it. Apparently this has been a busier summer than usual. Recommendations from the hosts were great. Elizabeth was helpful, answered questions and we enjoyed a visit with her the last night.

A Lovely Stay
Everything about the property was as described. It's a lovely old farmhouse, well-equipped with what you need, and the owners are prompt and thoughtful in their communications. The house is close to a busy road, which can make it a bit noisy, but the backyard is a wonderful refuge. We would gladly stay at this home again.

Retreat
The property is charming. The backyard is gorgeous, and there are several outdoor seating options. There is a nice working grill and a fire pit also in the yard. The owner is delightful. Their house is attached to this property.
My only problem is the listing for 7 adults. This property is great for 4 adults and a couple of kids. The kitchen is small, the downstairs bathroom is small. The third bedroom is very tight. The house looks larger in the photos than it really is.
The other problem is that it is directly on route 102 which is a very busy road, and the road noise in the master bedroom will get you up early.

Lovely visit to MDI
Robert and Elizabeth are wonderful hosts and provided delightful accommodations and recommendations - especially enjoyed going to Common Good Cafe and Burning Tree restaurant.
I was not bothered by traffic noise but others in my party were not used to it.

A wonderful stay at Captains Retreat !
We could not have been happier with our stay at Captains Retreat . We had the pleasure of meeting Elizabeth and she’s fantastic . A wealth of knowledge about the area and have us tips for the best hikes to take . The house and yard were amazing and centrally located to everything we had planned to do . Would definitely recommend to anyone that enjoys the beauty of the National parks!

Family Vacation
The home was very nice. Well maintained and good space for us. We loved the large yard to hangout in and utilize the firepit, grill (needed grill tools though) and patio table. We also appreciated the ability to bring our dog.
The bedrooms were great for 6 adults, and comfortable. The bathrooms were a bit small for all of us to utilize well for a week, but not terrible by any means. The road noise was a bit much as the property is on a busy highway. Some of the paper products were not fully stocked at the start of the week for 6 adults and when we requested extra, we were told to provide for ourselves.
Over all we really enjoyed our time on Mount Desert Island and while this location is on the quiet side of the island it was only about 20-25 minutes to most locations we wanted to get to. The quirks we dealt with were pretty minor and did not hinder our stay.

Beautiful, well-appointed home
We loved this home. Everything we needed for a family of 5. We cooked many meals in the kitchen and enjoyed the yard. Only downside was the traffic noise since the house is so close to a busy streeet.

Will be back next Year!
I love this place! Location for me is perfect! So close to all my quiet side hidden spots, yet just a short drive to BH hustle and bustle! The new addition of the privacy fence is nice! Love hanging out in the hammock! The backyard is just a getaway in itself! Our dogs love exploring in it! Looking forward to returning and making more happy memories!

Captain’s retreat
This renovated farmhouse was our favorite! Not only was it beautiful, It was clean and had all the amenities we needed for our family of 5. We especially loved the history of the house. Elizabeth was so kind and very responsive to our questions and had great knowledge of the island. Overall it was an excellent experience!

Amazing location & family friendly!
The farmhouse was so great! It was spacious and comfortable, we stayed with our two little girls and they loved exploring the huge yard and sitting around the fire at night. It’s a great central location for everything on the island!

Loved our stay at Captain's Retreat
We really enjoyed our stay at the Captain's Retreat. The house is very comfortable and conveniently located. Beth is so helpful and gave many good suggestions for local restaurants and hikes. The only reason for the 4 stars rather than 5 is that while the house was conveniently located, it is very close to a busy road. However, trees line the road and this provides a nice barrier. I would recommend this property and would stay again!

Awesome.
This charming farm house was very comfortable and well-appointed. The owner thought of every detail and was readily accessible if we had any questions. The location is a great base for exploring all of Acadia National Park, and the owner had great local recommendations. We would definitely stay here again!

Charming House
Charming house with everything you need to feel right at home. The house is located with easy access to the beautiful area that it resides in. In addition the house was clean and stocked with all you need to enjoy your stay - the back yard was beautiful and quiet with a great fire pit to keep you warm outside on the chilly nights. I would recommend this Farmhouse retreat to anyone looking for a wonderful and comfortable place to stay in Maine.

Always awesome !
Once again, captains retreat is a homerun for this family! Everything we need for a perfect getaway is there waiting for us! I am so in love with that backyard! It is a beautiful, peaceful oasis! Favorite spot for me...the hammock! Got to see some deer early morning! One of these days I will have to be sure to be there during blueberry picking season! The yard is loaded! Looking forward to our return early summer! Thanks so much for sharing your lovely tranquil home with us!

Lovely farm style house in Acadia Nat'l Park & Bar Harbor area! Well stocked with many amenities.
There was a personal gift awaiting us - good introduction and first impression!!
There were 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
The WIFI was reliable.
There were plenty of supplies in bathroom and kitchen.
The grounds surrounding the farm house were very nice.
The area is very quiet and quaint.
Wonderful 3 nights while we explored Acadia and Bar Harbor.
Also, went to Franklin Roosevelt vacation home at Campbello (look it up on the internet - wonderful day trip from this location.)

No detail missed. Highly recommended!
Captains Retreat is so charming and perfect in every way. Ideal location for Bar Harbor and Acadia park. Elizabeth was very helpful and we followed many of her suggestions in the Welcome Book which were all spot on.

The interior and back yard of home are lovely. It’s proximity to highway is major negative.
Loved the home interior. Liked its proximity to Southwest Harbor(6 minutes). Home is very well maintained. We were well located to access everything we wanted to do. Big disappointment was excessive road noise from highway. It literally sits just a few feet off of Highway 102 and the road noise is constant. It is not pleasant to sit in or outside of house unless you can distract yourself from whizzing cars. We live in a very quiet neighborhood so noise level was immediately obvious to us. If you live in the city, perhaps the noise wouldn’t bother you. If it doesn’t, then i would highly recommend house. Restaurants in Southwest Harbor, which house is close to, are excellent. Drive to park or Bar Harbor is only 15 minutes away. Loved location. Hated road noise.

Acadia visit 2018 at Captain's Retreat
My husband and I celebrated my 50th birthday in Acadia and stayed at the Captain's Retreat, centrally located, to so many amazing places. Elizabeth (the owner) was extremely accommodating and made our stay super special. Before our arrival we communicated via email and Elizabeth had given us plenty of advise on things to do and places to visit, so we were well prepared to make the most out of our 3 day visit. We totally lucked out with the weather, so we were able to enjoy the back patio for coffee, lunch and wine time. But when in the house, we spent most of our time in the kitchen (there it is super happy and inviting!!!!) and with early rises, busy daily activities and romantic dinners out (all recommendations from Elizabeth), there just was not a lot of time to "relax in the inviting family room in the house".
We truly loved our stay!!!
The home is located on a busy road, which I mapped out prior to our visit, so we were prepared for that. But you will hear this in the back yard and in the bedroom upstairs if you have the windows open.

Elizabeth was extremely helpful with suggestions of hikes, restaurants etc.
we loved the old farmhouse. It reminded me of the House I grew up in.
Would definitely recommend it!

Perfect location, lovely hosts!
The Captain’s Retreat House was perfectly located on MDI. Easy access to anywhere on the island, but especially loved that it was closer to the quieter side of the island. The house was comfortable and plenty of room for the four of us. Elizabeth was a wonderful host, and her recommendations were spot on! There is traffic noise and it took some getting use to, but I would still rate this house as a 4 1/2 star rating because it was otherwise just perfect!.

Great family vacation for us and our adult daughters!
Charming farm house with all the comforts of home in a great location for all the sites and activities. Hosts were very friendly and helpful. We also brought our two dogs and they were equally welcomed. Acadia and Bar Harbor were in close proximity and offered more than we had time to take in. A great time wasvhad by all.
3.0
Everything the other reviews say about this house are true: It is very well decorated, the furniture is all new, it is clean and the owner is delightful. However, the one thing not mentioned (and why I gave it a three star review) is that it is right next to a very busy street, and so you constantly hear traffic noise from a steady stream of fast-moving cars, which are all about 10 feet from the entryway to the house.
This is less of a big deal at night than I worried it would be - the noise from the box fans (there is no AC) pretty much drowns out the traffic noise. But, it is definitely an issue, and it makes sitting outside (there is a lovely lawn) much less pleasant than it otherwise would be.
I also was frustrated because I was not warned of this. There is nothing in the description warning about traffic noise, and when I spoke to the owner on the phone before renting, and specifically asked if there was anything I should know about the house, she never mentioned the constant noise from the traffic.
So, it is a nice house. But if you are looking for a quiet vacation (which, given that this is on the 'quiet side' of MDI, might be a goal), this might not be the house for you.

The Captain's retreat is well-located on Route 102 on the quiet side of Mount Desert Island just minutes from all the popular west side hiking spots (Beech Mountain, Acadia Mountain, St. Sauveur, etc.) and Echo Lake for fresh water swimming and boating. Do be sure to use caution entering and exiting the driveway from route 102.
The house was fully redecorated last year and is both charming and comfortable. The kitchen is very well equipped for meals at home; you can eat at the large island in the kitchen or at the table in the dining room.
We were a party of four to six for our two week stay. We were comfortable, and found we all had plenty of space. We would happily stay again if we return to Acadia.

My family and I enjoyed our stay at the Captain's Retreat so much! Elizabeth was so welcoming and helpful with tips on where to eat and what to do. The property is beautiful and the kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to make our stay comfortable and convenient. The location is close to many activities in and around Acadia, but also convenient to Bar Harbor as well.

We had a wonderful, relaxing vacation at this beautiful farmhouse! Roomy, comfortable, and clean. House was perfect for our family. Terrific area, lots to do, great hikes and enjoyed coming back to relax by the fire pit at night. Beth and Robert were great hosts!

We had a lovely time. The house is very conveniently located. It's a quick drive to Acadia and Bar Harbour, there's a grocery store down the road. This is a tastefully renovated house with a fully equipped kitchen, ample closet space and plenty of outdoor space. There were 6 in our party and it was a comfortable accommodation for all. Highly recommended. Elizabeth is very responsive, provided us with ample information ahead of time. Everything was seamless.
