The staff were so helpful and kind. The guesthouse is not modern, but has more of an old fashioned homely feel. There was a fire in the kitchen and it felt so cozy. The beds were comfortable and the facilities were well taken care of. The location is convenient. Overall, this is a really nice place to stay if you are in Takayama.

今回の部屋は少し暗かったです。

The owner was kind and patient with customers, and the property had a chill vibe. The bed was really comfy too.
The location was about 20 mins (on foot) away from main tourist attractions and transportation centres.

Free station shuttlebus.
4.5
The staff were very friendly and helpful (even offering a shuttle bus to the station three times every morning). The building is large enough to accommodate guests with plenty of room for sleeping areas, showers, toilets, and even common areas to relax or socialize (outside too). The kitchen is huge and well equipped for pretty much any meal.
Nothing in particular. I think the only thing I thought was weird was allowing guests to wear their shoes inside. I understand it’s easier on the guests, however slippers in the toilets and shower room will be more sanitary and give other guests peace of mind.

Sakura is such a beautiful place to stay! It felt like home. The staff are so kind and helpful. The facilities are excellent. There's free coffee and a beautiful view from the kitchen. The best thing was the feeling you had from being there. It just felt so cozy and warm. I loved it. It's a bit of a walk into town, but a bit more of a walk for such an excellent place at such good value was totally worth it.
Nothing. I loved it.

Very nice staff. They give free shuttles to the train/bus station (on certain hours). The kitchen is very good and with all amenities. Had a phone charger and a light in a convenient place in the bed.
A little bit far, but that makes it really nice to go outside to have a walk.
Didn't have lockers (but you shouldn't worry about that too much)

The staff took me to the station by car on the morning I left.
There was everything I needed : comfortable bed, nice view, kitchen with lots of stuff, washing machine...
The place was a bit impersonal.
For the location: it is close to the folk village but a bit far from the city center (30 minutes on foot) and the train station (precisely 17 minutes by walking).

comfy blankets, shuttle to town was convenient, kind staff
a bit dingy, and not much of a lounge space. just a few tables in the kitchen and small couches upstairs in front of a couple rooms. based on some previous reviews i thought it was going to feel more out in nature than it did

The gest house is far away from the old city (30min walking at least) and the last bus goes at 5pm so it's very likely that you end up walking home.
It's a very old house that doesn't feel super welcoming, kitchen is old with old supplies.

Near the station. A little uphill but a very good place to stay. Place is very clean.

the calm, the kitchen, the fireplace, bathrooms
distance from the station , up the hill

Clean bathroom and spacias rooms, nice and cozy atmosphere
Not so good illumination in bathroom, 15 minuts walking from the station

Friendly Staff
Area around is dark, a bit far from city and convenience store.

clean and best location

The owner was really friendly and gave me a free upgrade as there were not many people staying.

Good location.

The beds are comfortable and there are curtains around the beds in the shared rooms. The shared bathrooms are spacious and there are common areas where you can sit.
The guest house is a bit far from the station and you have to walk uphill a little bit. It was a bit difficult to walk to it in the snow from the station. It is far from the city centre, but close to Hida Folk Village.

I love this place. A traditional Japanese Building with a very lovely garden yard in front of it. Very spacious room (as I was the only one in a 6-bed dormitory) so that I could relax fully. Showerrooms were shared but with individual cells. In the evening you could hear noise from other rooms but luckily not till so late. Price was really very reasonable.

The house was very pretty and we could feel a Japanese traditional atmosphere. The beds were comfy and the common area very clean. Bonus for the view on rice fields.

This was actually my second time staying at this hostel as my friend and I went on an overnight trip to Kanazawa. They were kind enough to take care of our big bags, while we took a day pack with us to Kanazawa. They also had a free shuttle service from their hostel to the station that was quite useful!
The front closes fairly early. But really this is a minor complaint.

Free shuttle service from the hostel to the station! That is amazing! Located in a traditional looking district, there is a lot of Interesting things to do just around the corner.
The initial trip to the property can be daunting if you have a lot of luggage and haven’t secured transportation there.

Of course, my comment about the tea/coffee is only a small point - every other aspect of this accomodation was flawless, and I recommend it very highly!! :D The beds in particular are very comfortable, and the staff are kind and accommodating in every way :)
It would be nice if tea and/or coffee were provided, because in my opinion it's really easy to simply buy 1000 tea bags and leave them somewhere in the kitchen, and that would really help travellers, when everything in the immediate area is closed until 10 or 11am.

All necessary facilities available. Comfortable and cozy, including a nice fireplace. Good view in the morning.
The location was a bit off, and the surroundings were very dark in the evening.
4.5
It was the most expensive dorm room we stayed in during our entire trip and it wasn’t anything to rave about. Thin spring mattress was not comfortable. It felt outdated and kind of unorganized (extra beds out in the halls, etc) but not particularly dirty. It was far away from the old town where the Takayama Autumn Festival was happening but the location itself was quiet and peaceful which we liked.
Uncomfortable mattress

This homely hostel nestled amongst rice fields and mountains is a must for anyone visiting Takayama. The staff were so friendly and helpful, and the area was so peaceful and beautiful. The hostel is within walking distance of Takayama station and Hida Folk Village, and there is a free morning shuttle and also cheap bike rental provided by the hostel. We wish we could've stayed in this gem for longer and we'll definitely be back to visit.
