When we tried to check in we were told that there were no rooms available even though we had confirmed reservations. This was due to construction that was ongoing for months. At no time were we told of this and given a chance to book elsewhere. We were sent to a Holiday Inn that as run down and was a block away and owned by the same group as the hotel that we booked. I have instructed my credit card to put the cost of the reservation in "dispute".

This was a bait and switch. We were booked here but placed in the hotel next door that they also owned. We could have booked there earlier for less. The hotel they placed us in was full of mold with huge air handle machines trying to cover up the issues. Staff just shrugged. Seems they have a racket going on.

Under construction/remodelation however the place we stayed at (Abitta Boutique) was excellent.

We were redirected to Abritta Hotel because El Canario by the Lagoon is closed. The taxi could not find the hotel, i called El Canario number and was informed that we had to check in to Abritta. Expedia should have known that the hotel was closed so that i could have chosen another hotel. The restaurant was excellent, staff great.

I would like to inform you that I wasn’t able to stay at the property that I booked as the hotel was under construction and maintenance. I was highly disappointed and had to relocated to different property which I stayed for one night. Please don’t advertise to that I can book my reservation and have to find out that the property under maintenance this highly unacceptable. It’s shame that I have to write a review like this. In conclusion no representative did not help the situation as I got the run around. I would like this issue to be resolved as I am highly upset.

I ended up getting transferred to the next door Abitta so the review is really for them. The front desk were really friendly. The hotel is cute and boutique. My room had a window with a cherry picker right outside. The worst was that the air conditioning couldnt be shut off. It was ridiculously cold in the room so i turned off the AC and the condensation made it so it couldnt be turned on again until miraculously it started working hoirs later. I almost switched rooms but the other one smelled like construction dust. The AC started working again so I stayed in the room and instead stuffed a towel to keep the room at a not freezing temp. I think the waste of electricity was bad. The other bad things was that the toilet seat didnt stay up. Little things that could be easily fixed which is what they should be doing. The location was great just a short walk to the beach and they have beach chairs hotels can use.

It wasn't The Canario by The Lagoon Hotel. The aforesaid hotel was under renovation. I wasnt informed until I walked into the buidling next to it, The Abitta. The front desk informed me that I was to be accomodated with a room on their property because my hotel was being renovated. I paid for a room with double queen size bed at the CHbTL and was walked into an Abitta room with one king size bed. Although the hostess was pleasant she wasnt too inclined to accommodate a room change. She relented to another Double bed room but it was too small for two people. I settled for the first room right above the kitchen. During check out I asked for a breakdown pricing for the stay. I was informed by the host that since I wasnt a guest at Abitta Hotel she couldn't give me a true bill I was given a pre- fabricated bill without letter head. The Abitta is a nice hotel with decent amenities and location, just wasnt expecting the change up.

We arrived in a new place late at night to a boarded up hotel. Boarded up- no lights, plywood on the windows. I asked the Uber driver to circle the block thinking we had to be in the wrong place. How could this happen?
We went next door to another hotel, who apparently have a relationship with the El Canario. They were able to connect us to a nearby hotel to provide a room for the night.
This is absurd - what if there had been no hotel next door that we recognized and could meet our needs?
So upset that Hotels.com would have an establishment that is not even open for business listed and accept reservations and money. Totally lost trust!

We were told that El Canario was being renovated at this time, so we were upgraded to Abitta Boutique Hotel. Which was quite lovely and exceeded our expectations. The location was excellent, no extra charges were forwarded and we were very satisfied. Thank you.

This hotel is currently closed due to remodeling. We stayed at the hotel next door when must be own by same company. Looked recently remodel with some nice art touches. Some of the staff not to friendly and the attached restaurant staff completely ignored us so we ate our breakfast along the main drag.

Expensive and just a step up from staying at any big city YMCA. Very basic. Elevator did not work properly. Door had to be pushed open to enter. Breakfast was very basic. The breakfast rolls were nice the first day and by the second day they were stale and unpalatable by the third. Coffee was terrible. No help from the waitress in the restaurant in the morning. Toaster didn't work. Had to scavange silverware from the unused tables at the front. Never to return. Construction was loud and disturbing.
WiFi was good, dependable.

They moved us to Abitta. It was nice!

The building was dirty due to construction next door. Street was in poor repair. The elevator was not working properly. We were led to believe there was a continental breakfast, but that was not true.

We booked the Penthouse suite, with rooftop balcony and kitchenette. We did not get that. We were placed in hotel next door with no balcony or kitchenette, and when they showed us the room, they told us it was an upgrade! The room was nice with comfy beds, but I really wanted the balcony and kitchenette. Breakfast was not included, and there was no toaster or bowls for cereal, so breakfast in the room was not an option, even though there was a small fridge and microwave. We have stayed in El Canario in the past and were happy with it last year. If we would have know earlier of the changes ( we found out at 4:00 pm check in) we would have had time to look at other options. They did refund the resort fee, but I was still disappointed to not get the room we booked. There was construction at the hotel.

So, El Canario By the Lagoon is under major construction which they don't mention in the listing. When we arrived the door was locked and the construction workers said we should go to the hotel next door, which we did. There, they checked us in and gave us a key, told us to go back over and gave us a code to open the door. Inside the hotel was a construction zone. The foyer was literally open to the driveway and the floor, elevator and hallway in the first floor where we were supposed to have a room was covered in footprints and cement dust. It looked like a construction area. The room was basic and fine however, guys were working outside right below the window. I went back to the office and said we were going to change hotels. The person at the desk got on the phone then told us we could stay at that hotel, The Abitta, room 306. That hotel was very nice and at least staffed. However in our room there was an intermittent loud noise from behind the wall in the bathroom that sounded like a loud drill or jackhammer. It went on all night and got more frequent in the AM, which lead me to believe it could be the pipes. The hotel is nice but avoid room 306. Also, do not book a stay at El Canario By The Lagoon until construction is complete. They said sometime in June, maybe. They took care of us, but keeping that listing up during construction with no mention of it is dishonest at minimum.
