This is the place to be. Charming and very helpful staff. Exceptionally large, and comfortable room with river view. Stunning bathroom, shower and tub also with river view. Ideal location within walking distance to starred Gion restaurants and practically next door to the best bar in Kyoto, Turquoise. There is even a washer-dryer. Why stay anywhere else?

Wonderful staff. Very organized and great information provided to tourists. Washer and dryer in room was the best part! Very very clean and large spacious rooms.....rare. Would definitely stay here again. Very convenient location to Gion corner and market and right on river. Beautiful area. Highly recommended.

The hotel is very Japanese - travelers will need to remove their shoes in the room. The bathroom shower was a little bit moldy, however. It was clean, but the wooden tub had some dark spots that really defy scrubbing. Otherwise, the room was spotlessly clean and perfect for a family. The washer dryer was great and easy to use and we liked have a refrigerator in the room.

This boutique hotel is stylishly designed, spacious and comfortable. It is beautifully located on a small canal and very close to markets, up-scale shopping and the Gion area of Kyoto. We loved staying there!

The room was perfect and has a nice view of the river. I loved the large, clean bathroom and the fact that I could do laundry there before we left for hakone. The service is impeccable and the hotel even provides a phone for you to use during your stay. They also helped us adjust the breakfast to accommodate my mom’s allergies.

CRAZY building owner. If you are assigned to any room in the building next to the receiption. Please be aware of a crazy Japanese guy. We arrived at Aoi Kyoto at around 11am in the morning, it's was pouring rain, we settled everything and ready to explore the city around noon. we stood in front of the hotel building stone walkway to check the map 1more time. 5seconds later, I felt someone pushed me on the right, my natural instinct was moved to the left couple steps and said "Sorry". Then I turned right and saw a 40+ yr old grumpy Japanese male came out from the restaurant on the 1st floor of the building waving his arm to gesture me to move, then he followed with his broken English "MOVE! GO! Don't stand here" I replied "sorry, I am guest of the hotel" He turned his way to the hotel building, and said "Are you the owner of this building? I am the owner of the building!" I was so puzzled, I wanted to walk back inside to read the map since the rain is getting heavier. After couple steps, the Japanese guy turned to me again, and shout “I am the building owner, when I walk, you don't walk! Go!" I was like "Is this real?" He shouted again the same thing and I got so angry so I ran to the receiption next building. I told the lady at the front desk what happended, she just said "We did received some complains, maybe he is a weird guy”. Very unpleasant. He lives on the 2nd floor of the hotel and he is a chef from restaurant on the 1st floor, he ruined reputation of Japanese really.

Amazing location (near shopping area and plenty of great restaurants and bars)! Hotel amenities were great and staff were extremely helpful. The handy device provided was quite annoying since you have to log in every 30mins hence didn’t carry it along

I have a bad back and emailed the hotel before asking for a Western bed. They wrote back immediately ensuring me that this would be the case and that they would add 2 soft toppers to the mattress and told me not to worry, everything would be taken care of, and it was.

Really enjoy the stay!

Hotel is managed with heart, which can be seen from home-feel decoration, cleanliness, welcome gift arrangement, and best of all, the professional staff team. This time, i cannot get a room with Kamo Gawa river view will surely be my next reason to travel Kyoto and staying in Aoi Hotel again.

This hotel is not to be missed if you are coming to Kyoto and want to be in the heart of the Pontocho area overlooking the river. The room we were in was clean, spacious (slept 3 with plenty of space) and the large bathroom was like a mini spa featuring a wonderful wooden soaking tub. The staff are superb and friendly. Every question we had about getting to and from a location or getting a taxi or even getting food for an early train was answered and if not immediately, it was researched and provided. The restaurant recommendations (and reservations!) they made for us were superb as well. Again, highly recommend this choice. Now we just want to come back in the summer!

The hotel room is more like a little apartment -- it is extremely comfortable and spacious. It has everything you need. Very well thought out. Great location on a beautiful quiet street. Easy walk to Gion district, Nishiki market and Pontocho. Lots of food places with 5 minute walk.

We loved this hotel and wished we had booked it for our entire stay in Kyoto vs the 3 nights we had. The hotel isn't large: 4 floors with 3-4 rooms per floor. We liked that we weren't in a massive building with other people. The room is spacious and set up like an apartment: microwave, fridge, hotplate, washer/dryer, etc. The room even had its own wifi. Location was also good for exploring the Gion area and the Nishiki market. Staff was polite and helpful, providing us with info on things to do and places to eat. Will definitely stay again.

We rented a large suite on the first floor with Balcony for 4 people. It was a great stay. Very special place, carefully appointed, minute attention to detail, high quality everything, unique design and setup (wooden bathtub!), great service, great location just steps away from Gion and many good restaurants, fantastic view on the river. Felt like living (it large) in Kyoto.

Incredible experience! Friendly helpful staff, kind, accommodating: recommended restaurants, made reservations, always polite and gracious. Very quiet, clean, roomy, had washer/dryer, microwave, refrigerator, provided robes, had beautiful view of cherry blossoms street side.

We stayed for 5 nights with two children aged 4 and 6. The room has a small kitchenette and washer/dyer which was great with the kids. Close to many restaurants and a supermarket. Can't say anything but great things about this hotel.
