great central location with plenty of places to eat and drink

All good but very noisy early hours

Amazing wonderful stay in Colchester once again. We’ve stayed at this hotel several times before.
On the plus side we were given a free upgrade to a wonderful room with the balcony.
Hotel is part of the George Hotel which I strongly recommend for a Sunday lunch. All staff at hotel were amazing
4.0
Hotel in a central position, which has positives in that it's easy to get to, but the drawback is that you hear people as they leave the pubs, bars, clubs etc. I still think it's worth it though. Especially with their connection to The George Hotel

Lady was polite at check in, the hotel was very clean & well provided loads of space beautiful view
2.0
Checked in okay and the people at the front desk were lovely. The main building looked very nice and was done up well. I was in the part across the road which didn’t look as nice at all. Getting in was all fine but when I entered the room, there were bright green stains all over the floor, marks all over the walls, the toilet seat had a stain the whole way around it and there was hair EVERYWHERE…the more you looked, the more you found

City-centre location excellent though ear plugs essential on a Saturday night! TV remote control needs replacing as some essential buttons didn’t work. A mattress topper would have helped the comfort level. Lovely firm mattress and super-king bed but with a king duvet inside a super-king cover, which was annoying.

I have no idea. It was overbooked so was transferred to an out of town hotel
3.0
I was disappointed as this was a deluxe room and cost us more money, but wasn’t as nice or as spacious as the room I had, when I stayed there previously, and that was just a double room. Also had a large balcony but with broken slabs and no table and chairs to sit on
Also the fire alarm went off and woke me up, and I didn’t really know what to do. It went off for about 5 minutes.

The facilities are old, and no air conditioning in the room. It’s muggy hot without air conditioning.
4.0
Room was fine but the kettle kept tripping the electrics so couldn't make a hot drink. Shower 9nly had cold output no hot water.
4.0
Nice huge room however no air con and the view was disappointing, also when directed to our room was told 2nd floor incorrectly. Minor inconvenience but frustrating

Thank you to the guys at the Nicholas, always welcoming, the room clean and aired, another pleasant stay.

Ideal for what we needed. Rooms got quite warm but cant really have windows open as on noisy high street
5.0
Quick and smooth checkin, room as one would expect, clean, tidy with simple amenities, comfortable bed. Noisy revellers if facing the high street on a weekend if there is to be one fault.
10.0
Smart, clean, new hotel and good value for money. Conveniently located on the high street. We stayed on a Friday and the High Street is very very noisy until the wee small hours. The lads like to ride at speed on noisy motor bikes in groups along the High Street.

Nice room, clean and tidy. Need air con though it was really hot in room.
4.0
Whilst the room was clean and well kept, the lack of air-con in the room made for an awful night sleep as the room was stuffy and uncomfortable.
We were supplied a fan which did absolutely nothing to help unless you pressed your face up against it!
My partner even had to get into a cold shower at 5am just to cool down.
I would definitely recommend the hotel investing in air-cons for the rooms as it was not a pleasant experience at all which was a shame!

Room have no airco. Given wrong Wi-fi password.

Got into the room and the walls were pretty dirty. The shower door was difficult to open/close. In the summer, we had to call up for someone to bring a fan and hair dryer to the room. I thought these would be essentials in the room already? No AC which made the rooms absolutely sweltering. Service was good however when asked for the bits, they came within 5/10 mins.

Have stayed here 3 times now in the last 6 months maybe?? It just seems to be lacking something especially if staying there more than a night like I have done… however just based on this stay; bin in toilet seemed to have been shot at with a BB gun, the in room safe didn’t work (wouldn’t let me put new combination in), the supplied fan (even though there seems to be aircon controllers on the wall) was loud as anything so couldn’t have it on and sleep at the same time, minor thing but the TV remote was missing the back and to use one of the plug sockets in the room for the tv itself (theoretically unpluggable by a guest and removable) but yeaaaa it was ok for my needs you seem to pay more of a premium for the town centre convenience than the quality of the room
4.0
I paid for an executive suite with balcony where the balcony door was not working correctly and the air conditioning was not working at all.
2.0
Very nice all round, but, and it’s a big but, the room was the hottest hotel room I have ever stayed in!! Huge windows that only open an inch or so, so you can’t get any air in to the room. They provided a fan, which did help but not a lot. The irony is the hallways outside the rooms were lovely and cool as they had air con!!

This is the sister hotel to The George (where you check in). It’s quite modern and access wise s via key cards with no reception. Rooms clean tidy and decently furnished and spacious. Car park is difficult to access and was full. A cheaper option is the NCP behind Fenwicks a short walk away.

It’s on HighStreet across from several bars and clubs, so it’s expected to be noisy. There are a lot of drug addicts and homeless people in the area which can be loud at night. The room and hotel itself is amazing - staff lovely and everywhere was cleaned regularly. What I miss the most is air condition. The rooms only come with a fan and when it’s 27 degrees outside, it’s impossible to cool down so sleeping at night is challenging. Other than that, I cannot fault anything.

Thurs, Fri night
Price: room £125.28 + breakfast £50 + parking £24 = £199.28
Last two paid on arrival.
Plus: central location near shops and castle, reasonable price(?), tasty breakfast
Minus: central location by live music venue, woken at 7am by workmen upgrading adjacent area using drills and machines
But my real problem was with service.
Sent email with one price for parking, charged another 'nothing we can do".
Tea and coffee: only small espresso mugs, so bought large takeaway cups for tea. 2 decaf coffee, 2 non decaf coffee, 2 english tea, 1 earl grey tea, 1 green tea, 4 milk. So if only drink non decaf coffee or only English tea, 1 drink each. (on website mentions coffee pods, no). Not replaced on Friday, so had to walk to hotel across road in rain and was given 5 English tea and milk, but no clean cups.
Bins not emptied, bed not straightened - as though staff didn't know room was in use.
No room phone, so only contact by that walk or trying on mobile.
Fire instructions for room on floor above, so had no idea where stairs were, breach of safety regulations.
Friday breakfast, contractor deep cleaning carpets, so noisy couldn't understand what staff member was offering for meal. She said needed to pay for breakfast although already done.
Saturday breakfast, quiet, approached in lobby by same staff member asking for payment for breakfast. Extremely embarrassing, waiting while reception checked. Felt accused of dine and dash.
Other small issues,
Matters reported to staff.

The property was awkward to get to. The check in was not very welcoming. You have to check in at The George over the road and we had to go back in and ask just where our hotel was. The door scan cover was missing, as was the toilet roll holder. The TV had a mind of its own and randomly turned itself on and off. The balcony was covered in bird droppings not what you would expect from a room described as deluxe and I would have expected air conditioning as a standard.

Stay at The George rather than this property if available. We stayed our first night at the George and it was wonderful. After checking into our room at the Nicholas, we had to change rooms as the room was so warm and so noisy from the bar across the street.
3.0
The hotel was far less what we expected. It says the hotel is 4 star rated, not sure how. The reception is in the other sister hotel , the George across the street. This was not a problem...we just thought that the George was being a little misleading with there description. The St Nicholas hotel ... is not a hotel, its a block of apartments. The room was quite small, with a tiny shower. Im not big at all and i struggled to move around in the shower. We had no shower gel, also when we asked for clean towels they never arrived. The room was scruffy with loads of scuff marks all the walls. All this needed was a little elbow grease to remove . personally we would not stay here again for the price.

This is a lovely modern centrally located hotel.
The only issue was the water pressure in the shower was poor.

This is a great place to stay highly recommend! Reasonably priced and very good value. The room we had was quite comfortable on the top floor with a private balcony area, perfect for us smokers. We were right in the heart of the center easy walking distance to castle and pubs/ nightlife. The front desk is located just across the street and the staff were all super friendly and helpful! Would stay again for sure if ever back in the area great job!

Nice room and interior and customer service, but no air conditioning in the room. It was very hot in the room and we had to walk through alcohol spilled everywhere on the lift
