The donkeys and ponies while away the days grazing in their fields and would be delighted to be offered some carrots or apples.
Things to do in the Local Area - On a fine day and when the tide is in, the Ballysteen Pier and Slipway are very popular for swimming and water sports. Why not join the local children and jump off the pier or watch the jet-skis. A group of friendly bottle-nosed dolphins are regular visitors and are amazing to watch.
- Enjoy a stroll in the Ballynacourty Gardens filled with many varieties of shrub roses (May and June are months when the garden is full of flowering trees and shrubs).
- Visit Askeaton and its castle located 10 minutes drive away. The mediaeval village of Askeaton was once a stronghold of the Munster Geraldines, the Anglo-Norman Earls of Desmond. With its winding streets and imposing ruins you will find a rare mix of old and new. The focal point of Askeaton is the castle which stands in the centre of the town on a rocky island on the River Deel.
- Go to the award winning Flying Boat Museum and enjoy a comprehensive range of exhibitions and memorabilia. The Maritime Museum portrays the history and personality of the River Shannon from Limerick City to Loop Head. The River Shannon is a huge feature in the history and mythology of Ireland and this new museum features some of that history.
- Take breathtaking photos at ‘Feile Laindeir’ - the lantern festival held in Askeaton every Autumn. Local artists from the Deel Arts group take to the River Deel with the rowing club and display their hand made willow lanterns on the water. Taking advantage of the calm tidal waters, they create a mind-blowing show of light and reflections accompanied by enchanting music. While on the riverbanks local children and adults carry brightly decorated lanterns complementing the watery show. This unique event relies on a deep tide so the exact date is announced nearer the time.

It's a newly refurbished cottage located next to a real medieval castle, and the views of the water and the horses, dogs, and goats that are nearby are incredible! Paul and Anne were great hosts. Also, that coal stove in the living room was nice for the cold and rainy nights!
It's a little remote, so it takes a little while to get anywhere on the winding and narrow country roads. But that's the charm of staying in the Irish countryside!
