It was uncomfortably hot, too hot to sleep at night and there was a damp feel throughout the entire house. We noticed a musty smell and several areas of mold on drywall. Drywall tape was hanging loose and doors not closing properly, just too much dampness to be comfortable.

The rocky shoreline and private tidepools were amazing. The large kitchen bar was great for meals and family games. The castle was quirky and spectacular and the long house that is under construction makes us want to come back! We had a great time in Maine.

The owners put so much work into every detail of this place! Quality, charm, awesome wood and stone work! Perfect isolated location, yet not too far to get to civilization, Acadia, and our favorite-Schoodic point. The private little beach is an amazing spot to sit and admire the mighty ocean and think , read or write. Everything was so clean and well stocked, the owner was quick to respond to any questions. If not for the incredible beauty of Maine, we could’ve spent the entire time in this beautiful place!

Mold infested safety hazard
This home was a disaster in the deep woods. We wanted to stay here with our small children. Not only is the place covered in mold but there’s major safety and code violations throughout. There’s a crib and beds up against an open loft with a huge deadly drop of a child climbs from the crib or furniture. There’s a filthy shower with ice cold rust water. The place is freezing in early Sept. with no heat. The listing shows photos from when the home was likely listed for sale and is not current. I am putting this review to protect other families who may pay for this hone and end up in a hotel like we did. The beds are yellow, old, dirty mattresses with hairs. The mold is so bad that even the owner said to put a blanket on the furniture before attempting to sit on it. This should be considered a cabin in the woods and a step above camping in a tent. It should be maybe $50-$75 a night honestly understanding that the mold/health and safety violations are present. The home really needs repairs. Locks are broken on doors and stair cases are like a lighthouse which could trap you in a small room with tiny windows in case there was a fire. You’d have no way out. Families with kids should NOT rent this. I don’t think anyone should rent this if you are concerned about breathing high levels of mold. You smell it the second the door opens. This place should be condemned or renovated majorly. The listing doesn’t match up with what you’re renting. Beware! I thought this would be a magical vacation and it seemed like a great idea until I arrived at a filthy cabin. There was old food in the fridge and open containers of ice cream, old dates on dressings in the fridge, moldy cheese... the beds were sickening. I wouldn’t even sit on them. The beds couldn’t even be donated to a homeless person. Please beware of consumer fraud and false advertising.
Manager's Response:
Thank you for your review. This owner has asked us to pass along the following response:
"Thank you for your feedback. The 3-year-old refrigerator, which I had personally wiped down prior to your arrival, did contain some food. The cleaning crew who came through after our departure should have either tossed these or taken them home to use. The only thing I leave in the fridge besides the baking soda and water would be the spices in the freezer, for guests to use. They keep fresher longer that way, and we don’t always have time to refill the jars in the spice rack during the turnovers.
The pictures were taken 3-4 years ago, and so do not reflect the upgrades which have taken place since then, not the least of which is the gas log unit put in this Spring 2019. The house now has a working fireplace, a new entrance walkway, new ceiling wallboard, and recessed lighting scheme in the master bedroom, new hardwood maple flooring in all bedrooms, and a spacious, suspended deck, shaded by a tall maple tree, with a picnic table for eating meals, and just hanging out. Additionally, we've upgraded our WiFi service and will be installing an upgraded water filtration system later this month.
The plan for the future is to continue upgrading and refining the property, taking great pains not to squeeze the life and the charm from this mighty castle. Some great suggestions have even come from guests, such as the possibility of an outdoor eating area (completed in Spring 2019) With our daughter having grown up here, and a new generation (now 13 month-old twins!) coming behind to discover it, I’m sure we will continue to find new ways to improve and enjoy it, which we look forward to sharing with you who wish to be enchanted by it."
Best, the Evolve Team

Dragonwood Castle was an absolute treat. The sounds, smells, sights and feel of this home were magical!
4.6
Staying in Dragonwood is like living inside a piece of folk art. It's fanciful, weird, and a genuine delight. But if you are seeking a pristine home, sanitized, climate-controlled, and empty of evidence of human habitation, this is not the place for you.
The overall feel of the place is like visiting an artistic, eccentric, but elderly aunt whose house is chock full of a lifetime's oddities and acquisitions. When she serves you tea and cake, you know the plate is likely to be a bit smudged, the cake dried at the edges, maybe nibbled by mice. But her company is so fascinating you'll overlook all this, and keep from turning your head at the furtive scurryings at the baseboard you see out of the corner of your eye.
Dragonwood is just such a trade. Sitting in the lower living room with three-story tall windows, you may see three species of butterfly at once on a thistle plant in the foreground, and the surf and ledges of the Atlantic in the background, but you will also smell the dank notes of a typical New England stone basement, a space that, inexplicably, communicates with the living room though a bank of screens in walls.
The ground-floor shower is built of huge, rough hewn stone blocks and you will have the feeling, while bathing, of living inside a medieval story. The water, fully drinkable, is nevertheless so laden with iron that it has a tang of blood to it, and will stain your clothes, particularly the whites. Best to take your laundry home with you.
There are elaborate dioramas built into the windows, and hand-carved hinges on the cabinets, and a turret master bedroom where you can hear the bell buoy and the waves all night. There is also, on damp days, a dim smell of dog in the entryway.
The back porch is built around a maple dripping in lichen; you will feel like you're in a tree house when you sit at the picnic table out there. The property includes a segment of spectacular rocky coastline, accessible by a short grassy path.
The house has its quirks and peculiarities, maybe more than others of its age, even given the fact that it's a castle. But, like any person or place or house worth knowing, there is much one will tolerate or overlook for a richness of experience unparalleled by any other house we've ever rented.
We would be remiss not to mention our immense gratitude for the responsive owner Amélie, who gave excellent suggestions and made a special effort (despite being far away at the time) to rectify a thorny issue.

We are grateful for our wonderful week-long stay in the whimsical Dragonwood Castle. Even with our party of six adults, the house had ample living and sleeping space. In addition to meeting all of our basic needs, the house's well-thought-out design, beautiful view, and its abundance of intricate, hand-crafted details truly set it apart from other rentals we have stayed in. Furthermore, Dragonwood Castle is situated in the ideal location for visitors to Maine due to its close proximity to beautiful parts of Acadia National Park such as Schoodic Point, as well as uniquely Maine attractions such as U.S. Bells and the Pickled Wrinkle. We would happily stay here again!

We loved the uniqueness of the property and had a wonderful week in ME. We rode our bikes most mornings from the property around the Schoodic Peninsula and back - 16 miles. Absolutely lovely riding with a new view every day depending on the weather. As parents, we loved that there was WIFI but not really access to a TV. It's in a wooded area so stays cool enough during the day. We didn't realize there was a spiral stairs to access the upper floors but we were all capable of accommodating the stairs so not really a big deal - more of a surprise when we first arrived. The second floor is really one very large sleeping space and not two separate bedrooms so it's hard to call it a three bedroom but not sure how you'd advertise it any better in the general description - the kids navigated it just fine - again just another surprise. The master had lovely views to the morning sunrise and was spacious with a lovely breeze to sleep in! We really appreciated that linens and towels were included. The house overall could have been cleaner. The beach is not really a beach - it's more waterfront property. The well water was drinkable but we ended up buying water for the week. So for all these reasons, our overall rating was a 4. Great property!

This place is a wonder. Tons of room, incredible details in the castle - especially the windows! We could not have asked for more!

The location was amazing, better than bar harbor if you want to get away from the crowds. Strongly recommend lunch on the warf in Corea and the Pickled Wrinkle. The only think keeping it from a five star in my opinion was the place screemed to have a fire pit, and there was none. Again my opinion, but really. No complaints. The host was awesome too.

Great location
Enjoyed the stay at Dragonwood Castle. It was a very nice experience. The property has it’s own private beach and the property owner was very helpful.

Very unique
We loved the privacy of this location. We spent a lot of hours in the evening playing cards in the kitchen area. This was the easiest place to sit and have the best lighting in the evening hours. The walk to the beach area in the morning provided some very memorable pictures! The owner made many great suggestions for restaurants and things to do in the area via phone before we arrived. Be mindful that the ferry to travel to the main portion of Acadia National Park was closed after Columbus Day. The Schoodic Peninsula portion of Acadia NP is beautiful and very nearby.

Wonderful as ever
This was our second visit to Dragonwood Castle, and our stay was just as lovely this time as it was before. Some improvements and updates have been made, and the castle is looking better and better. We love the huge kitchen for cooking, and enjoyed lounging on the chaises down in the living room. Even in the fall we were warm and cozy! we will surely be back again soon!

Even better than the pictures. Family of seven and we loved the house and loved the area. Great host
The pictures don't do the house justice. You have to see it. Our kids are 9,11,15,17 & 21. We were very comfortable and the kids loved it. Played and loved the castle. Little ones loved the top of the castle. Big property with trails to the water. Lots of exploring. We bought local lobsters and cooked at the house. Went for ice cream at "Ben and Me's" every night and rented biked and rode through Acadia. What a great week. So glad we chose this house in this area of Acadia. Best family vacation we have had. The host was awesome. Very informative and available through the whole process. Thank you so much for the opportunity to enjoy your house.

Very nice, unique, private
We really enjoyed our stay at Dragonwood Castle! It was a beautiful home with all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. Beautiful sunrises across the bay with lighthouse in view! Loved Maine and we will be back. Owner was very nice and helpful with giving recommendations for things to do.

Enchanting
This property is enchanting, whimsical and altogether lovely. We had a great time exploring the property and taking in all the little details in the house. It’s very quiet, no “people” noise - just the ocean. We had a great time!
4.6
Magical
The home and the location were magical. It was though we had been whisked away to our own little fantasy vacation, complete with whimsical features throughout the home. The stunning views and ocean breeze added to the magic as the hypnotic bell in the bouy in the bay rang with the tide. I found my happy place!

Dragonwood Castle was amazing!
Our family enjoyed a wonderful week vacationing at Dragonwood Castle! Whimsical is the best word to describe this unique cottage situated just 100 feet from the Atlantic Ocean. The owners were delightful to interact with and provided all the amenities one would need for a comfortable stay. We will definitely be returning in the future.

Like a Fairytale
We were married on October 6, 2017, and because of my career as a teacher, we only had a few days to honeymoon, so we were looking for something truly special, and close-ish to home. We found Dragonwood, and booked with hope that it would live up to our expectations. When we arrived, we were greeted by whoopie pies and a congratulatory note.
We found the house to be impeccably clean and cozy (no evidence of a stale smell that other reviews mentioned). The kitchen is wonderfully large for cooking and well-stocked with a variety of pots, pans and utensils. The living room is small, but cozy; we loved the twin chaise lounges for afternoon napping in front of the HUGE windows facing the water. We very much enjoyed the natural stone shower on the first floor.
The master bedroom at the top of the house is amazing. The bed is luxuriously comfortable, and the views are breathtaking. We did get up for sunrise a couple of times. We slept with the windows open listening to the ocean and the faint rhythmic ringing of a melodic bell off-shore.
The yard is tidy, and the private beach is lovely. We enjoyed watching the sunrise and the lobster boats from the bench one morning. The property is quiet and secluded.
We loved discovering the tiny details of the house that make it truly special: the napping/reading nooks in the walls, the stories told in the windows, even the collection of classic movies to enjoy on rainy afternoons.
We loved having access to a washer and dryer after a hike in Acadia turned into a mud bath.
Amelie was a pleasure to deal with, and has really thoroughly considered what guests may need; she provided helpful tips and information.
In a word, our stay was idyllic. Beyond perfect. We cannot think of a better place to have spent our first few nights as husband and wife. We enjoyed our time at Dragonwood so much that we have already booked again for our 1-year anniversary.
Only recommendation/critique: I could not find a hair dryer (if there is one)
4.6
Was a great getaway and vacation
The property was what we expected based on the pictures we saw. We were really impressed by the beds and how they slept along with having all of the essentials. The full kitchen had everything we needed to cook a few meals. Also, plenty of towels and they had a lot of bug spray which was needed. Very easy access to the rock beach and the kids loved it there. We made a small fire on the rock beach and had smores. The only reason we didn't give this a five star rating is the furniture smelled. When we laid or sat on the furniture it would stay in our clothes. We had to find some blankets to put on the lounge seat as that was a primary spot for us to relax and enjoy the views. The parking was interesting also. If you have more than 2 cars you are in trouble. The owner was very nice to talk to and accommodating if needed. It also made it easy that we didn't have a checklist or anything we had to do before we left.
4.6
Wonderful location
We really enjoyed our stay at Dragonwood. The kitchen is spacious and well-stocked. The house is a bit musty smelling and there is not a great area to gather other than the kitchen. The views are magnificent!

Magical
We just had the privilege of staying at Dragonwood Castle. My grandchildren absolutely loved it and were continuously finding new treasures hidden throughout the house. I loved waking up to the view from my bedroom window on the third floor and sitting at the huge windows in the living room to watch the ocean while I enjoyed my morning coffee. We walked on the shore and through the woods. It was a marvelous adventure.. The owner was so gracious and took time to explain what we should expect and what to look out for once we arrived (mosquito spray, flashlights at night etc.)
As a senior person the spiral staircase was a little bit of a challenge but doable. I would highly recommend this castle for anyone wanting to spend time in this area of Maine.
