The Visby Fängelse hostel is a practical place to stay in Visby, well located just outside of the ferry. The vintage wallpaper and historical decor elements are nice and funny, as well as the experience of sleeping in what used to be a prison. However, there is almost no staff, only staff at the bar somewhat know what’s happening. There are not enough showers and toilets for the number of guests. Renting sheets and towels is outrageously expensive. The respect of quiet jours (starting at the usual 11pm) for the evening is a myth ; we had to try falling asleep while other guests were partying in the common spaces, which were gross the following morning. We put food in the fridge and one of our yogourts and some fruit mysteriously disappeared.

My stay was great, the facilities are basic but very comfortable. One thing, however, I did not see one hand sanitizer in the while hostel, none in the common areas like kitchen or chill zone, nor in the toilets. That is very sad and not ok.

Very good location, both near the ferry terminal, the city centre and the car rental place. The room was very basic but comfortable. The pillows were however very old and worn out, and you had to pay extra for bed linen and towels (120 SEK); shower gel and shampoo wasn't included. Very nice staff. Overall happy with the stay.

Very close to the ferry terminal and old town. Rooms are simple and clean, the bathrooms and kitchens were clean and had lots of hot water. Luggage room was outside.

Super cool place and could be so popular if there will be more live put to it. Felt a bit dirty and the beds are not comfortable at all

Fängelse is alright as a hostel, but the cleanliness is not what I would have waited for. The building is very interesting and could offer a truly good experience.

I know that this is not a five star hotel, and I get that in July everything is expensive in Visby, so that’s not what bothers me. The reason for the bad rating is that they’re not even trying... Blood stained mattresses, dozens of dead flies in the fluorescent light fixtures, paint chips peeling off the walls down into the beds, and a table and several chairs toppled over and sharp pieces of a broken glass all over the floor in one of the common rooms - and none of the staff even seemed to notice. It’s quite sad actually; the location is great and the place has a lot of potential, but the owner and staff clearly doesn’t care any more.
