Relax on a Beautiful River in a Natural Florida Setting
About this cabin rental
Nestled in Florida, this charming cabin for $173 per night is a fantastic option for your next vacation. Would you like to visit a place where you have the chance to observe otters, squirrels, alligators, deer, raccoons, woodpeckers, blue herons, hummingbirds, cormorants, fish, and many other species of Florida wildlife in their natural habitats? And, you can do this from the comfort and safety of an observation deck or dock over the river. If you prefer, you can just sit on the screened porch overlooking the beautiful St. Marks River and soak up the peaceful solitude of a completely unspoiled environment. As the sun goes down, you will be captivated by the rhythmic melodies of the frogs and crickets, guaranteed to soothe your soul. Please note: for liability reasons, we do not provide boats of any kind You can rent them locally at TnT Hide-a-Way rentals on US98. When you book a stay with us, we will send you a long list of places to visit and things to do such as Wakulla Springs and the St Marks National Wildlife Refuge. Most of the roads, ponds and levees in St. Marks NWR were originally built in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), part of Roosevelt’s New Deal after the Great Depression. The ponds range from fresh water to salt, accommodating the many species of migratory birds passing through Florida’s Big Bend. We take several hikes around ponds to observatories and along the levees, marveling at the variety of grasses and wildflowers. Butterflies are everywhere, including the migratory monarchs passing through the NWR on their way to Mexico for the winter. Toward the end of the Civil War, the area of St. Marks was strategically important to the Confederate Army for delivery of supplies and to the Union Army trying to capture the capital, Tallahassee. The Union regiment, which came ashore here at the Lighthouse, was repulsed at Natural Bridge (where the St. Marks River goes underground), but not before destroying several bridges and the salt factory, essential for preserving food for the Confederate troops. Our cabin is a mere 4 miles from the Lewiswood Farm, a popular wedding venue, Mention you are having or attending an event at the farm for a discount.in our rate Before we approve your pet, we must know your pet's breed, age and size and if he/she will be on good behavior if you have to leave him/her alone in the Retreat? A pet fee of $25 will be charged upon approval. Our concern is that your pet is safe and so is our Retreat. To find out how our guests who have been on the tours enjoyed their trip, please read about them in our guest comments. Hope you will give them a call and take advantage of this special opportunity while staying at the Retreat. Happy paddling!! Guest Comments This is our second stay here and we know we will be back again. We so appreciate the beauty and natural setting of this place. In our two visits here, we have enjoyed seeing deer, owls (right outside our windows) and numerous Florida birds hanging out on the river. Our hosts Floyd and Carolyn were attentive and available to our needs. The Seinyard restaurant has definitely become one of our favorite places to eat (awesome food) and we make sure we visit it every time we are blessed enough to come back to visit. Thank you Floyd and Carolyn for sharing your Retreat Joe and Debra Lutz, Florida This place is amazing! We have fallen in love with the breathtaking and extremely relaxing environment. The jumping fish were hysterical! However, the cows walking in the river topped the fish. The house was perfect and had every thing we needed. Thank you so much for an amazing weekend. We will be back! Cory & Amber Well, what can we say except the location was superb. The interior design is a testament to all your hard work and imagination. Spotlessly clean. So tranquil and relaxing sitting on the dock in the morning. The beds are some of the most comfortable we have had the pleasure to sleep in. The nighttime chorus (of the crickets and frogs) is something we will always remember. Great fun trying to catch the uncooperative mullet in the river, but we did catch one at the Seinyard restaurant and it was mind blowing. So, Floyd and Carolyn, thank you very much for a wonderful Retreat. “Haste ye back” Martin & Julia Edinburg, Scotland What an awesome experience! Our accommodations were unsurpassable, and, to say the least, our trip was a success. Now that we found you it goes without saying you’ll be stuck with us and our soon-to-be FSU student. We’ll be seeing you again. Elise & Larry Coral Springs, Florida We really enjoyed our stay at the St. Marks Retreat. We paddled our canoes on the St. Marks, Sopchoppy, Wacissa and Aucilla rivers. All lovely. Tons of birds, otters, alligators and turtles. We also went hiking at Leon Sinks and biking on the St. Marks Trail. This cabin is delightful- quiet, peaceful and very clean. There are more rivers and trails to enjoy, so we will be back. Lois, John & Jocelyn Traverse City, Michigan Floyd, it has been a pleasure meeting you and staying at the St. Marks Retreat. After working 11 years in the hotel industry, I have to say this is the cleanest and one of the best decorated properties I have ever seen. The nature and river next to the Retreat is good for mind, soul and body. The St. Marks Retreat is the Best! Robert and Family Jacksonville, Florida This was our first sort of wilderness vacation, and the Retreat didn’t let us down. Very serene and relaxing. Spotted a very large owl outside the cabin (approximately 2 ½ feet tall)- very wild and scruffy looking. We saw many deer on the road coming in and more up close in the wildlife refuge. We also spotted a black bear in the Apalachicola National Forest. We enjoyed the good fresh seafood at the Seinyard Restaurant. The cabin was indeed clean, quaint and comfortable. The location and atmosphere proved to be the natural and relaxing stetting we desired. Ted & Cindy Cape Coral, Florida What a wonderful vacation! This cabin is so cozy. Everything was clean and comfortable. We had a great honeymoon here. Thank you for the fruit, snacks, coffee and hot chocolate. That was a nice treat. We will be back. Take care and God bless you both. Dustin & Naomi What a lovely place. Everything was very nice. You’ve taken the time to make this a truly neat visit. Our children enjoyed netting the fish and playing in the water. Saw lots of birds, spiders, fish, deer. I even got up extra early just to enjoy the peaceful setting. Enjoyed the surrounding area, Wakulla Springs (saw a manatee), the lighthouse, the town of St. Marks. Thanks again. We will recommend this place, and we will be back. Our son says this is our new Florida home. Al, Marcy, Ally & Natalie Harrison, MI Thank you so much for this amazing experience. This was the best anniversary we have ever had. We saw all sorts of wildlife and relaxed more than we’ve been able to in a long time. We really look forward to coming back. We can’t thank you enough for everything. Jessica & Terry Thanks for letting us stay here for our 25th anniversary. The house is just the right size for us, and the surroundings are fabulous. We love this area. We even caught and ate scallops. We saw an abundance of wildlife. Sincerely, Liz, Mike & Jessica Keywords: Cabin

This place is wonderful for nature lovers. My husband and I enjoyed having drinks on the porch and listening to the sounds of many birds. The setting is very peaceful and quiet. The owners were easy to work with and friendly.

My wife and I loved it. I'm a multi-generational Floridian, and it's the real deal. You're definitely in an out-of-the-way place. Just sit of the dock for 5 minutes and say no more. Did have some Internet/cell phone issues. But, we knew we were on the edge of coverage, and did just fine. Based on our experience, definitely recommend.

We stayed in this beautiful cabin right on the river for our anniversary getaway. Had an amazing time watching alligators, manatees, ospreys, a bald eagle and mischievous raccoons. Can’t say enough good things about the property and the amazing host!!!!!

The cabin was very clean and everything functioned well. It is equipped with everything we needed for cooking, cleaning etc and the St Marks River offers great fishing, paddling and wildlife spotting having seen manatees, gators, otters and lots of water birds. Our favorite resident is the big Barn Owl whoo came to see us every morning. We plan on coming back.

Great property and great host, very responsive and helpful. We had a great time with the kids, close to springs. Tucked away, but close enough to Tallahassee area. 1:30 to 2hrs away from beaches St. George Island and Panama City Beach, about 1:30 hrs away from Thomasville GA. Great experience overall. Strongly recommend property, it has everything you need. Except the kayak, that, you have to bring.

The property was very remote/private, very clean, a lot of nature.

The cabin was awesome and the owner was delightful when we happened to meet her. Was centrally located to other wonderful sites to see. Saw so many birds-identified at least a dozen. Saw manatees swim by and watched them surface for air. What a lovely spot to unwind and be with nature.

This sweet little cabin was better than advertised. The cabin, decks, and boardwalks were immaculately maintained. Carolyn was responsive and thoughtful, even offering to bring a box of matches for the grill. Check-in with the lock box was easy peasy. Birdlife was plentiful. Saw some deer on the driveway. There were plenty of clean towels. I just wish I had been able to bring my canoe. Fish were jumping. I will be back.

We really enjoyed our stay. It was a nice home away from home and allowed us to be connected with nature!

Saw so much wildlife, a manatee in the river, spent most of my time on the screened porch. So quiet and you feel fully in nature

My husband and I look for places that are secluded and surrounded by nature. Yet, there are restaurants and shopping 15-20 minutes away. But with this house, you honestly won’t want to leave. We enjoyed the property immensely and loved all of the nature surprises we experienced. We saw various bird species a raccoon, two armadillos and jumping mullet. We didn’t get to see any manatees or alligators here and surprisingly no snakes. We were looking for them. But you can take a short drive to St Marks or Wakula Springs for more wildlife viewing.

Beautiful views from the porch. Peaceful and quiet, away from the bustle of towns and cities. Very enjoyable escape to rejuvenate and relax.

Wonderful and quiet. Enjoyed the campers and paddle boarders. Fish jumping. Loved the porch!! The last evening there were a few kids playing on jet skis but it was fun to watch.

I came out with an old friend to go birding at St Marks and just generally check out the area. LOVED this house, or in particular, the back porch and the seats right at the river’s edge. Perfect place to sit with morning coffee and listen to the birds wake up and move around. Magical. House was also comfortable and spotless, and had everything we wanted. Can’t replicate the location, and really hope to be back again.

This is a writer's retreat. It feels very isolated, though many neighbors are close. Except when neighbors are rarely busy with property maintenance, the deep quiet soothes the soul. Sit and watch the river and forget the world. Everything

We went to avoid outrageous hotel rates on an FSU game weekend. Would go back in a heartbeat, would love to go back and actually spend more time at the cabin. Bringing my kayak next time…Owners are super responsive.

We just came home from this cabin. We really enjoyed the porch. Stayed there almost all the time. Only outing was to go to Wakulla springs. Rest of the time was spent at the cabin.
It’s amazing to watch the water. The place was also plenty big for the theee of us and our dog.
The host was also very receptive to texts. Our main issue was that we had no cellphone reception at all or internet ( you loose cell reception maybe 5 minutes before you arrive at the cabin) I am a first responder and I am supposed to have better coverage on my cellphone but mine wasn’t working either.
Then the cabin also didn’t have working internet or landline there. I was fine with that because I found a place in the kitchen if I would let my cellphone at I would get decent reception in case anyone called from my work.
The only other thing that was a bit off was the amount of spider webs inside the house. Also I have a 3 year old who likes to walk barefoot. We found on the porch two random fish hooks on the floor. The vent inside the bathroom was clogged with dust too. So could definitely use some more cleaning.
But overall this is a great 2 day gateway!!!

Wild Peace
Two words rarely seen together: Wild Peace. The best of North Florida unspoiled wilderness and the laid back peace and quiet of a lazy flowing river. It was a great stay. I have never rented a place where the owners have gone to such lengths to see to their guest’s comfort and amenities. The kids loved every minute of the stay as well. Miss it already.

Why do the mullet jump?
Marlin and tarpon jump to throw a hook. Shad and salmon to reach spawning grounds. But mullet? They just jump, in beautiful leaps clear of the water. I prefer to think they leap for the joy of it.
Why do people come to this cabin? That is easy. To watch the mullet joyfully jump in the cool and clear St. Marks River, to see the other abundant wildlife, and to enjoy one of the most beautiful and peaceful of places in a clean, comfortable and quaint home. Everything you need is here, and everything you want to get away from is not. We loved our three days here; it was too short. If you love the beauty of nature, you will fall in love with this spot. We did.

short but sweet
We drove 5 hours to reach the cabin for a two night stay. Only wish we had more time. Kitchen was well-stocked. we only had time to "cook" coffee. We had one dinner at Wakulla State Park Dining Room. It was very nice - excellent server in every way. White blanket in master room was awesome.

Ice maker iffy
The rest unbelievable. Should know to bring ice to a fish camp!
Don't miss this, watch momma racoon drain the humming feeder...big owl hunting just before dawn. Pristine.
