About this house rental
Chestnut Oak Farm is a luxurious western-style lodge retreat on a 90 acre horse farm near the base of Old Rag Mountain. The lodge was constructed in 2009 using granite blocks from the farm and huge Virginia pine logs in a western style of rustic elegance. The lodge is surrounded by decks and porches to take in the magnificent view over Hidden Valley, Old Rag Mountain, the farm's twin ponds, and the horses grazing in the fields. The lodge is equipped with a Chef's Kitchen, huge dining room (we have seated sixteen), double-sided fireplace, baby grand piano, screened porch, and covered porch. The main lodge house has three Master Bedrooms, and two other large bedrooms with a shared bath. Downstairs is a walkout game room with foosball, ping pong, bar, and a fire pit/movie pit with 52" screen TV. The outdoor 8 person hot tub is steps away, overlooking the pond.
150 feet down the hill below the pond is the 'Guest' Treehouse. The treehouse is a cedar sided two level cabin-style house which sleeps six, with full bath and kitchen--and an optional fire pole exit for the adventurous. This treetop aerie has to be seen to be believed!
The farm has a small herd of horses and one alpaca, Mike. We have hiking trails on the property. A fantastic network of both gravel and paved roads fans out from the farm for incredible short and long distanced cycling routes. Or you can leave the farm to hike the incredible local trails or fish the local streams, or visit some of the local wineries or organic farms. We are 35 miles from Charlottesville, and 82 miles from Washington DC.
Caretakers live onsite and can help out with questions, firewood, directions, and even with provisioning if desired. They are happy to arrange spectacular custom-guided trail rides from a local stable in the surrounding mountains--even overnight camping trips.

We had a great time at the house, all family members enjoyed the stay. The morning view was so impressive from the deck but the evening sunset was even better!
Getting there was everything we expected as the host gave great instructions and let you know what to expect. Check in was very easy as well.
The host is very nice and informative about everything. The caretakers were absolutely fantastic, any question we had they were happy to help. They gave us great advice on the area and spent some time telling us about the horses.
The area is really nice too, a lot of local produce.
We would absolutely recommend this home and hopefully we will get back here at some point.

Our extended family - and our Golden Retriever - had a great stay on this picturesque 90-acre horse farm with stunning views. The house is amazing - 3 ensuites, 1 bedroom with a bath that doubles as a hall bath, a large “group” bedroom with 3 beds - plus a separate tree house with full bath that also sleeps six to eight people. This property ideal for large groups. The well-appointed kitchen with double ovens, double dishwashers and huge space is a gourmand’s delight. The home also has a washer and dryer for guest use as well as a drip coffee maker and a Keurig - all the comforts of home. The lodge offers an oasis from the world - but still provides reasonably good WiFi - that really does make for a perfect get-away. Everything you need is provided, and there is a reasonably good Food Lion 20 minutes away as well as a farmers market (Yodlers) just across from the Food Lion that will set you up nicely for all the provisions you might need. This was our second stay and we will definitely be making this place a regular family vacation spot.

What a beautiful property and home! The outdoor space is amazing, with many seating areas to relax and enjoy the spectacular views. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. My family really enjoyed the downstairs game room in the evenings. And the treehouse was such a cool, unique experience. The nearby caretakers were amazing and extremely responsive to all questions and concerns. I’d definitely recommend this property!
There are some things I think other renters should be aware of. There is no landline, and while WiFi was available, it only worked for FaceTime audio-only calls and for texting. The treehouse itself is fantastic, but the mattresses are as hard and unyielding as a rock. The treehouse air conditioner is great, but the small loft area still became too hot to really use for sleeping, as it was in the 80’s during the day.
Despite those few things, it’s a great place and I’d highly recommend it!

Picked as location for an annual 5 day retreat to the mountains with friends. It's much bigger than we thought from the pictures. Lovely view of Old Rag from the porch (and other surrounding mountains, but it really sticks out).
Treehouse was in good condition. Tough to work more than 2 adults in there comfortably with how the beds are laid out, but certainly would work great for kids. All other bedrooms were excellent, altho the beds are generally a bit old and soft. No curtains/blinds on any windows, which left a bit to be desired from a privacy standpoint.
Generally, we loved it, and will definitely be returning!

Thank you Richard for allowing us to enjoy this unique property. Unfortunately we visited during a heat wave and enjoyed limited outdoor time, however there was plenty of space in the house for everyone to stay entertained and the treehouse was still comfortable for the teenagers with the A/C. Early morning fishing was a popular and entertaining activity. Charlotte the property manager was close by and very responsive for anything that popped up. Future guests should bring eye masks for sleeping if the early morning light would disrupt their sleep. Sleep was tricky with our 3 year old for this reason, we travel with a Slumberpod tent for the baby. We hope to return in the future! Gorgeous house, quiet surroundings.

This property is outstanding in all regards. Both the mountain views and the unique construction of the house are spectacular. Every room is beautifully furnished and comfortable. It is a perfect venue for a family gathering or a group of friends. And the caretakers are very responsive.

Very nice well appointed home. We came in for a nearby family wedding and it was a great place to stay. Try to arrive during the day though as it is a little hard to find at night. But well worth opening and closing a gate or two. Fantastic view. Great space.

Wonderful family togetherness in a beautiful log castle. My sons cooked wonderful meals, kids loved the outdoor space and the perfect tree-house. The home was the most impressive we have ever stayed in. The views of the mountains were majestic. The kitchen is huge. We loved having two dishwashers. There are so many bedrooms, so much space and interesting things to do. We loved it.

This was our 6th annual friends trip. We started coming to the mountains together as a group of 10 six yrs ago. I can't say enough how beautiful this place is, we absolutely loved it! We definitely plan on making this our mountain getaway place each year. The house is awesome. The house has a great kitchen. There really isnt anything that they dont provide here.
There only 2 things which our group would like to see updated.
First is the lack of window coverings on the bedroom windows. We would like to have some privacy since all the rooms are mostly on lower level and face the big open yard where we spent the majority of our time. Also a couple rooms were kept lit up all night because of the full moon.
The second would be to either update with better mattresses (especially rooms with twin/double beds) or add cool memory foam toppers. Kids don't care what they sleep on but us older adults definitely need decent mattresses.
Caretakers Joe and Charlotte were super nice and available if we needed anything.

We planned our reunion for 12 adults and decided on this property for October. It was totally amazing! Lots and lots of room and plenty to do. We visited wineries and distilleries during the afternoons but hung out and cooked in all weekend. The views from all the rooms are spectacular. The walk does the road to see the horses and meet Joe the caretaker was fun. Communication with the host was sparse but a very detailed set of instructions and things to do was sent a few days before check in which was very helpful. This is a truly peaceful place. Oh, and I need to practice up on my ping pong!

We recently stayed here and had a small reception in the yard. Every view was so beautiful and there was everything we needed. Plenty of room for people to enjoy the setting.

Our family of 10, which included 3 generations, had a wonderful stay at this property. There was plenty of room for everyone, the kitchen was nicely appointed, the tree house was enjoyed by teen grandsons, and several really enjoyed the fireplace climbing wall!

The main house/lodge is amazing. Views are gorgeous. The setting is peaceful and private. There are so many areas inside and outside of the house that it was hard to choose where to gather. Double ovens and dishwasher worked out great for a group. This was our best family get together yet!

My family stayed here for a wedding in Washington, Virginia. The photos don't do the property justice! The house is absolutely beautiful - as are the views! Rooms are spacious and there are plenty of beds and bathrooms! The caretakers - Charlotte and Joseph - as well as the owner - were extremely responsive with any needs that we had. We spent each morning sitting on the front deck - looking out at the mountains. The additional tree-house is so cute - I only wish we had children that could have enjoyed it. We are already talking about having a family reunion there in the future!

Our group of 12 had the best stay at this magnificent farm property! It was the perfect setting for multiple generations to bond, play, eat, and laugh together. We could not stop marveling at all the thought that must have gone into designing and appointing the very special house and treehouse. The photos absolutely do not do it justice - the views are majestic and the house is stunning!
We were initially worried because VRBO assessed a $1000 fee for "additional guests," even though we were under the occupancy limit. When we did not get a response to our request to have the the fee removed, we got worried and almost canceled. I eventually connected with the owner and he eventually removed it. Am I glad that we didn't cancel! Although communications with the owner were spotty, when I did connect with him, he was helpful and provided great information. It's clear he loves his property and wants guests to feel welcome. We feel blessed to have been able to experience this special place, and we look forward to returning!

Met with a total of 10 adult friends from 4 different states. Lovely drive, 1 1/2 hours from Dulles without traffic. Plenty of bedrooms. Enormous beautiful home and setting. Well stocked kitchen. Loved the porch (screened and otherwise). The hot tub and ping pong table were a big hit. Great and easy access to Old Rag trail, and 30 minutes from the entrance to the park between Luray and Sperryville. Great base for visiting a couple wineries, a locally brewery, and hiking.
Communications prior to check in not great, with no response to two different VRBO inbox messages. Did not receive check in information and had to call the owner/host the night before our arrival, but then had a rapid response and good communication after.
Will definitely stay here again if we return to the area

This location was perfect for the brides family to use as home base on the wedding weekend. We had plenty of room and loved all the porches for outdoor views and gatherings. Next time we will plan to spend more time using the hot tub, fire pit and hiking. We loved this house!

Our stay at your beautiful log cabin home was epic! Everything was better than pictured and described and the place had everything we needed and more!
The kitchen had plenty of cookware and serve ware for our large group and there was ample space for many cooks in the kitchen.
The main cabin and the treehouse accommodated our group very comfortably. All beds were super comfortable and each having its own bathroom was such a treat.
We enjoyed the downstairs game room area and TV.
We had planned to visit a local winery, but couldn't bring ourselves to leave the property. So we set up our own wine tasting outside with the fire pit and plenty of chairs for all!
Thank you for sharing this amazing place - we are planning our return!!

Perfect in every way. Pictures don’t do it justice. Clean, spacious, beautiful views, comfortable, functional, fun. This place has it all with no complaints. We hiked Old Rag Mountain. Strenuous but so worth the view. We would have done the rock scramble had it been 10 years earlier. Also went to Luray Caverns. Truly amazing. We would not hesitate to go back to this house. And the tree house…adorable.

Our group (now retirees) have been hiking Old Rag annually for decades and hit jackpot a few years back when we came across Chestnut Oak Farm. We haven't stayed anywhere else since then. It's a beautiful house with incredible views. There's nothing better than having morning coffee while gazing out at the mountain you'll be hiking an hour later. And later soaking in the large hot tub while again gazing up at where you've just been hiking. It's also a great place to spot shooting stars after dark. The house is designed for groups, including the kitchen which among other things has 2 very handy dishwashers. The huge screen in the game room was perfect for watching the World Cup and afterwards we had our own foosball competitions. The owner is easy to communicate with and accommodating (including our request to arrive a little early to watch the US play), and the caretakers are great. When a wind storm knocked out power in the area for a few hours, Joe stopped by to help out and put us at ease. We're already looking forward to next year!

This is our fourth time renting Chestnut Oak Farm. It never disappoints. Always a magical and rejuvenating experience. We love the view from the porch and our daily walks to visit the horses. Can't wait until our return trip in December!

We went with 14 people and had a few beds left over in the amazing tree house apartment.
Really nice that a fire was set up, in the granite area on the first night we arrived, and a beautiful starry night the last evening.
Really good location, near hiking trails, and restaurants not too far away, “ The Inn at Little Washington “ and its new Cafe Patty’ Os.
We take turns planning and this one stepped it up a notch.
Really great time with my extended family.

Wonderful property, top notch amenities, breathtaking sunsets, and a short drive (20-25 minutes) from old rag, white oak canyon, and Sperryville. Everything you could want in a luxurious escape from the city.

Our group (6 adults, 5 kids, 2 dogs) had an awesome time at the Chestnut Oak Farm.
There was plenty of room for the kids and dogs to run around, beautiful views for the adults, and a well cared for house where everyone could relax.
We cooked big meals for everyone on the propane and charcoal grills, the kids loved the treehouse, and we all enjoyed seeing the horses every morning.
Skyline drive in Shenandoah National Park and the Luray Caverns were short trips that were enjoyable for all.
Overall, a 5-star experience at a 5-star property!

Gorgeous mountain house with beautiful views
This was a first-rate property all around. The main house was a masterpiece of log construction with huge windows and decks to take advantage of the views. The kitchen was well equipped for our group of 13 - who knew how great it would be to have 2 dishwashers! - and there were lots of linens. The tree house was a great solution for a group of noisy teenagers! The property itself offered a cool stone firepit, walking trails and horses and alpacas for lawn art! It was well located near wineries, cute small towns and fabulous hiking opportunities.

Perfect stay
We have returned from our family get together. Due to COVID it is the first time we have been together since 2019. This house was perfect. The kids loved the tree house. Pictures of the main house do not do it justice. It is much nicer than pictured!! Plenty of room for everyone, lots of games, nice outdoor seating areas. The only issue, there was a storm the night before our check in that affected the WiFi during our stay but not a major issue. we would return if we are in the area again.

Extraordinarily spacious, comfortable house with beautiful vistas
This is a remarkable house and property in a lovely location. Perfect for a family reunion. Lots of space -- indoors and out -- and very comfortably furnished. Many distinctive touches, including tree trunks as interior columns, and a cozy treehouse.

This place is absolutely magnificent! The pictures don’t even do the beautiful design and incredible landscape justice. We went for a ladies’ weekend and it was everything we could’ve imagined and more. It has everything you need for a comfortable, relaxing stay.

Best family trip ever
Besides the incredible location, the house is everything we could have wished for. Plenty of room for both families and our small dog - great running and walking, fires in the fireplace and fire pit, music in the living room, petting the horses… close to old rag, wineries, and delicious local ingredients. Can’t recommend highly enough.

Absolutely amazing!
Those are the only words me and my friends could come up with when we got to the lodge. The view is gorgeous, the property is incredible, and the lodge/treehouse is so much better than the photos.
Everything you needed was there. Linens, towels, and a fully stocked kitchen. We were cooking for 8 and had no problem with space. The wine/bev fridge was clutch for our goodies. All the counter space...all of it.
The game room was awesome. The main floor sound system was a blast from the past but so fun.
Wifi did what we needed it to from our phones. One person tried to get her laptop connected and it wouldn't take but it was fine. We weren't there to work, she just wanted to respond to an email with a full keyboard versus her phone.
The only possible thing I could say negatively is completely out of the owners control and that is the stink bugs. It's bug season and they were out in full force but it was fine. Wear shoes in the house and dumping our shoes before putting them on became a joke.
I wanted to stay for a month. I highly recommend the Lodge and would go back in a heartbeat. Thanks for an amazing stay!
