We stayed in this house for two weeks and really enjoyed it. It was well furnished, clean, close to town, a beautiful street and the perfect place for our family to spend our time. Our local contact was easy to reach and was very helpful. Can’t wait to come back!

We enjoyed our stay at the Captain’s House. It’s quaint and quirky. It was clean and comfortable. We were able to easily walk into Damariscotta for the pumpkin festival and other local sights. There’s a fantastic playground near the local Y and Great Salt Bay community school that’s worth the visit if you are traveling with kids. When we were in the house, it was cozy to hang out near the kitchen and living room combo

Nice stay, plenty of room for everyone. The house was nice. There are quirks, like the layout and floors that are a little uneven, but that's expected in an older home. The hot water faucet in the upstairs bathroom should be looked at as it was lose. Overall we were very happy and would stay again.

We enjoyed our stay in this quiet neighborhood. Lots of room to spread out and a lovely front porch to enjoy a cup of morning coffee. Close to downtown Newcastle and Damariscotta, excellent restaurants and shops, and short drive to beautiful nature walks, the ferry to Monhegan and swimming in nearby Damariscotta Mills (freshwater pond). The property manager was very responsive. We were disappointed when the DVD player did not work (frown) since there were many movies we wanted to watch, but whoever stays here next time will have a new one. Kitchen window did not open and the kitchen fan wasn't working, but there were portable fans in other rooms, so we used them instead. Old windows especially in the bedrooms needed sticks to stay up, but all in all we enjoyed our stay in this grand old home. It was terrific having a new W/D to use. Thank you!

Our group of six friends came up from Massachusetts for Pumpkin Festival weekend. The location of the Captain’s House can’t be beat for access to downtown Damariscotta. It’s about a 10 minute walk. The whole street is lined with beautiful old homes and across the street from the house is a lovely cemetery right on the river.
The house is huge with multiple living-rooms and sitting rooms - plenty of space for a group of people to spread out and relax. This is our third visit and we hope to return!

Had a wonderful time. Easy walk into town. Plenty of space for everyone to stretch out.

First the positives! This property is on an unbelievably cool street located just up the hill from the Damariscotta River and the town. Easy walk into town.
The beds were all very comfortable as were the pillows. There was enough space to spread out, this property seems ideal for a family. The porch is a great spot to hang. The little window A/C units actually did a very good job as long as you shut the rooms they were in up.
This property is attached to another building that someone is living in. No big deal for us, other than essentially the parking is on the street rather than off the street. No noise issues or anything like that, but I think it’s is good to mention this as it isn’t really a stand alone house, even though it’s huge, it is part of a larger house.
The negatives? First and foremost the house needs a deep clean badly. The floors are all very clean and the bathrooms were clean. No issues there. The kitchen was not. All of the glass knobs were really sticky, we immediately wiped them all down a couple times to get them clean. The fridge isn’t gross, but it’s definitely not clean. The freezer really needs to be cleaned. If we had been staying for more than two nights we would have cleaned them. They were not great. We did wipe the handles down as they were also very sticky. Other areas were not dirty per se, but just really need a good cleaning. Generally not a huge deal, but when paying a cleaning fee in addition to the nightly rate we sort of expect stuff to at least be mostly clean. It was not.
One of the bathrooms has a claw foot tub and the shower head needs to be changed to one that will throw the water, it essentially just runs out and straight down. Otherwise this bathroom is great. The other bathroom doubled as the laundry room and had a bunch of stuff(vacuum cleaner, broom, etc) just sort of thrown in the corner. Seems like that could find a better neater place. The shower is a small stand up and is pretty hard to shower in if you are over 5’10” or a bigger person. Sucks to not be able to get a decent shower. For most people maybe that isn’t an issue, but we like to have a good shower.
The mowers showing up at 7:20 AM and running mowers and string trimmers loudly on one of the two nights all year we are away from our 5 year old and could have slept in wasn’t amazing. Also they coated our cars down when they weed whacked one foot away.
Overall a nice place that could use a bit of work and cleaning.

Perfect
We were attending a family event in Damariscotta and this home was perfect for our visit. On a beautiful, quiet street and and walking distance to downtown. Also close to other great midcoast Maine destinations like Camden, Pemaquid and Harpswell. The house is cozy with plenty of room and a very historic feel. The beds were comfortable and the wifi good, so no complaints from our a youg adult childern.

Our stay at the Captain's house
This was our second visit to this house which is a really lovely old home in a wonderful location. It’s on a very quiet dead end street but just a short walk to downtown Damariscotta across the river.
The plumbing is not modern but is completely functional. The kitchen is well furnished with cooking equipment but there is no salt and pepper or other spices and condiments.
We love this old house and would highly recommend a stay there. It’s great for two couples - plenty of space to spread out.

Wonderful Location
This is a great old house in a beautiful quiet neighborhood. Beds were comfortable, porch was inviting, and the location couldn't have been better. It does have old bathrooms and no AC, but there were window units and fans. Host communication was good.

Location is perfect!!
We really enjoyed the house and the location was perfect. The front porch was great for a morning cup of coffee and afternoon snack. We enjoyed walking into town for a bite to eat and visit the shops along the way. The house is perfectly located for easily getting to the many great sites in the Boothbay area. We headed out for a different adventure every day and the location made it extremely easy.

This place is great!
We really enjoyed this house during our short stay in the Newcastle area. As the owner mentions, it is old which adds to its charm. Beds are comfortable, we had no problems with anything. The location is perfect, a short walk to Main St. in Newcastle/Damariscotta. It was also surprisingly quiet being so close to the Main St. and Rte. 1. It looks like the rear of the huge house is used as rentals, and the driveway is meant for their parking. We parked on street along the porch side of the house as requested, which was not a problem as this is a dead end street with very little traffic. We also enjoyed using the porch with friends who came over to celebrate a birthday after a puffin cruise out of the dock by Shaw's Lobster Pound in Bristol.

Coastal Maine Retreat
Great property for our family to use as a base for exploring the Maine coast. Eclectic home with plenty of room for everyone. Very clean and comfortable. We didn’t cook in the kitchen, but it was stocked and ready.

Perfect location & lovely home
This was exactly what my family was looking for on our vacation. The house was comfortable, with more than enough room for all 6 of us. It was just a short walk to downtown!

Family gathering
I loved the home. If you have any health issues, it might be difficult, as all bedrooms are on the upper floor. The locationn was great as we were very close to the stores etc and close to where family was at a local campground.
I have not rented many from a many sites, but I'm not a fan of stripping beds as there are charges for cleaning etc., which I believe should include all cleaning, beds, dishes and garbage removal.

Great place to stay in Maine
Great house on a beautiful street right around the corner from downtown. Highly recommend for those looking for a rustic Maine getaway. If you are looking for more modernized amenities (bathrooms in particular), I would recommend looking elsewhere as this might be too rustic for you.

This house offers plenty of room, all amenities (washer/dryer, dishwasher) and is a beautiful historical house. And, the location is easily within walking distance of downtown--and we are all seniors! Improvement recommendations would be to have extra blankets and linens available. It was cold during our stay and though the heating system was amazing, we would have preferred more blankets. And, since the beds are are full size except one queen, and we are not tiny people, at least one king sized bed would have been lovely. Overall, a terrific place to stay at a great price!

We were two senior citizen couples. The house is old, spacious, historic and filled with knickknacks. The kitchen is well appointed with everything you need. It would have been nice to know, in advance, the size of the beds in each individual bedroom. A single, more detailed info/rules/regs sheet would also have been helpful. The bathrooms are unusual and could be improved. We enjoyed our stay in Damariscotta and the house was very well located and in a lovely neighborhood. (P.S. FYI: If anyone in your party has difficulty with stairs, all bedrooms are up a steep run of stairs on the second floor)

Great location, house is fine. Unfortunately, the upstairs bathrooms are horrible. We would not return there unless there major changes in those bathrooms.

Quaint comfortable home!
Very nice, I will be looking for this property’s availability upon next visit to the area.
Was unable to locate sponge or scouring pad to wash dishes but certainly an easily rectified issue.
Really enjoyed the very spacious and comfortable porch!
Thoroughly enjoyable stay!

Beautiful old historic home
We thought the house was lovely and it worked out well for our group. It is just a short walk to Damariscotta which is a quaint town on the river. There were a few minor things like a broken ironing board but overall it was great.

Elegant home on a picturesque street
We loved this old captain’s house in the quaint town of Newcastle, just an eight minute walk across the river from downtown Damariscotta.
We were two couples in town for the annual oyster festival in Damariscotta. We absolutely loved the spacious, graceful house with its wide porch overlooking the old cemetery across the street. We had everything we needed. Each couple could have their own bathroom, plus a half bath downstairs. The kitchen was well furnished and the beds comfortable. We couldn’t think of anything we would have had differently. We would definitely go back there again!

Lovely Maine house!
We rented the house for a quick weekend getaway with 4 women total. House had more than enough room for all of us with 5 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths and 3 living rooms.
The house itself is just lovely! Very clean and styled like someone's house in Maine. Very cute nick-nacks, piano and furniture to solidify the style. We sat each morning in the rocking chairs on the deck with our coffee. The cherry was the claw foot tub :)
There was one small issue where the cleaning crew forgot to run a load of laundry. Honest mistake! I contacted the owner and she responded very quickly and the cleaning crew came right over to finish up. We had backups available even with out them coming back. Appreciate the quick response!! Gold star to the owner.
The house location is perfect! We walked each night to the downtown area and really enjoyed the restaurants and stores in the area.
Thank you for letting us rent your lovely house. Would definitely be back.

Overall review of sea captains house
We spent 2 full weeks in Damariscotta. It was truly lovely and relaxing. While the house is old, I feel to make the stay even more enjoyable, a few things would totally improve things. The furniture could be updated, while we did not hang out there much, the furniture in the family room for lightweights may be OK but for anyone who has any weight to their body would find the furniture very unsatisfactory. For example every piece of furniture had plywood for support. For a 4 bedroom house 1 shower was a challenge but manageable. The biggest YUCK was the rubber gasket on the front loader washer. I personally have a top loader and have been told this complaint is typical but the smell was atrocious. It smelled of ammonia/ urine. This smell was evident not only in the bathroom ( the one with the shower) but drifted out into the connecting bedroom. The top sheets on the beds were clearly not intended for the size of these beds as they were clearly too narrow. Just to clarify, The house has not access to the River. We would absolutely return but would highly recommend making just a few updates. I have stayed in many VRBOs and these suggestions certainly would only enhance one’s stay.

Four retired ladies enjoy The Captain’s House
A great place to stay in a wonderful location. The only concerns you might have are the steps and the bathrooms if you are elderly. There is a fantastic claw foot tub in one, but older people would have difficulty getting in and out of it and the other bathroom upstairs has a small shower. The third bathroom is only a powder room on the first floor.
