This year we decided to try some place different than a hotel. Walking around Carmel last year, we found the office of Sanctuary Vacation Rentals and walked in. Wonderful staff helped us view a few of the rentals in Carmel and we picked The Madden Suite. Ideal location, clean with lots of room, compared to a hotel! We are trying to book a stay there for next year, but they don't have the rates available let?!?!?! We are going back! Hope that tells you want you wanted to know! Just don't take our time slot!!!!!!

This unit was perfectly adequate for our stay in Carmel and we appreciated the property managers efforts to make us comfortable. If you want to stay in the bustle of Carmel, but still have a bit of quiet. This place is wonderful.

All the places we had made reservations for were 5 minutes away; all the brunch places were 5 minutes away and the beach was a 10-minute walk. Fully stocked kitchen and the wine and cheese with crackers when we arrived was a nice touch. Bring a Duraflame if you wish, the fireplace is operational. Next time we have out of state guests, we will definitely try to book this place. Xtra Bonus Points: Go down the stairs, take a left, go through the passage and you will stumble upon a perfect pub. The little space heaters didn't provide enough heat and were clicking and ticking through the night. Didn't see how to use the fireplace.

Pretty much everything was good, the cheese in the fridge, the Pinot Noir and cracker on the counter, plus the organic coffee were all a very nice touch! Not having designated parking was difficult. The weather was cold, the big crack in the front door made it hard for the place warm up. The first night we were freezing, but the next day a very nice gentleman brought us two extra blankets. Service was amazing, we felt very welcomed!

Vintage Carmel property in an excellent location for walking in downtown Carmel. The management company is well organized and responsive. Weather was cool for our weekend stay, so the small electric wall heaters were marginally effective in heating adequately.

Once we found it... tucked down the alley, behind the sushi place Toro, we were greeted by a cozy little apartment. The wood burning fireplace was wonderful, but didn't draft terribly well, which might require opening a window or door a bit to help it out. Although on a cold winter night, that's a tough double edged sword to play with. The beds were cozy and comfortable too, but the best feature, is that you're right in the middle of Carmel. If I were going back to Carmel, I'd stay there again though, and recommend it.

While our overall experience was very pleasant and the location was convenient we found it difficult to get our luggage up the steep stairs. Access is tricky due to the lack of nearby parking. A great plus is that it is dog friendly.

Being able to park once for the weekend and just walk around town, to the beach, etc was extremely beneficial. More time experiencing & enjoying the vacation and less time trying to manage a car parking/driving situation. Awesome location! That is what this place has going for it first and foremost. The accommodation itself was perfect for two couples. Just enough room without having any to spare. Marty and the staff at the sushi place downstairs fell in love with our well-mannered, obedient and extremely cute 'RCA' puppy Miles. The only Con's I could possibly come up with is that both bedrooms should have a mirror for prepping outside of the bathroom, an opaque shower curtain so that more than one person could use the bathroom at a time, and the kitchenette is difficult to prep a lot of food or wash a lot of dishes without more counter space. But those con's are really stretching it, the overall weekend was a 5+++ experience! Thank you!!

Overall, I do not recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: This was our second year staying at the Madden Suite. The location is perfect and the unit is charming. However, I noticed the quality of the accommodations were not the same as the first year, mostly in terms of bedding, especially the pillows. It seems like a minor thing but I keep getting requests to fill out the survey so there it is. The shower is also very awkward for anyone over 5‘10“. The water flies over the top of the very small glass barrier and also leaks underneath requiring use of a lot of towels to soak up the water. My biggest complaint, and the reason why we will not use sanctuary again, is their lack of communication and attention to detail. I requested the second bedroom be set up as two twins instead of one king and called a few days before just to confirm. When we arrived, it was still set up as a king so I reached out to the office to see if they can change it or at the very least send over sheets so we can do it ourselves. A very rude young man came by with new sheets saying the request was not in our contract. I told him if that was the case, I even followed up with a phone call to confirm a few days before our stay since the same thing happened last year. He asked who I spoke with. I did not remember her name, but I told him the date and time I called. He then told me that I should have remembered the person’s name and that buying new sheets is not fair to the owner. I told him that was ridiculous and he then roughly placed the sheets on the kitchen chairs and stormed out. The property rental sends texts saying if you have any questions, reply to this message which I did, but I never once received a text back. It is a very charming place to say, but I’ve had my fill of Sanctuary’s lack of communication and attention to detail so we will be looking for other accommodations for annual trip to Carmel.

Perfect location for a weekend of walking eating and Christmas shopping A bit hidden by the courtyard of a Japanese restaurant, but the maitre d' was so friendly and helpful. Definitely walk through the tiny secret entrance at the back of the courtyard to the patio of Hog's Breath Inn for an after dinner drink. **Important tip** if door dashing, use the address of Toro restaurant.

The unit was right in the heart of town, very clean and well appointed. Two good beds and linen. It was quiet, very quaint and rustic. Parking could be a problem but we were there in mid November and parked on the street in front of the unit. Would stay again for sure.

It was so much fun to be in the middle of town--the location couldn't have been better. We could walk to everything easily. The place was spotless and charming. I highly recommend!

Great place, just a bit hard to find if you don't know that you need to walk to the back of Toro sushi restaurant and go upstairs, and you're the first door on the left. The staff at the sushi restaurant are super friendly and helpful with your stay as well!
