everything was clean and there is an equipped kitchen. we appreciated the free tea and coffee;)

Great kitchen and lunge facilities, which are shared with the family who own the property. They are wonderful, welcoming people and go out of their way to help with anything they can. They even helped me with adjusting my ski bindings, unexpectedly! There is a public onsen right next door and they gave us tickets to use it.

The hallways are cold.

Taka and Oraphin and their little girl were amazing. Matsuo House is a gorgeous little traditional Japanese house. The area is very peaceful and is a few minutes from a convenience store, and literally 20 seconds from a free Onsen. I spent my evenings eating in the living room with Taka and Oraphin, watching Japanese tv and having wholesome chats. It really did feel like I was at home.

There is nothing bad to say! If you are worried about the few reviews it seems that Matsuo House has, it’s just because they list each room separately, and have a separate listing for each season, due to the different demand in the area, etc. Lovely stay and I hope to return!

Zao onsen is a beautiful town, a great place to go skiing but our stay was memorable thanks to the big kindness of Oraphin and Taka. They are such beautiful people, willing to help you and to make sure you have everything you need. We bring back home wonderful memories and we wish to come back. Thanks again!

Wonderful location! This house was within 5 minutes walking distance from the bus station, multiple restaurants, and various onsens! The restaurant right in front of the house was so good that we ate there twice. Taka and Oraphin were super kind and helpful with anything we needed. They provided maps and tips on visiting the onsens. The room was quiet and had a lovely view of the snow and mountain. Western style Bidet down the hall had a warming function which helped with midnight bathroom trips. The shower room downstairs was very spacious and the water heated up very quickly. Coffee and tea were provided downstairs daily. We were provided with comfy slippers to use around the house while our snow boots dried in the foyer. It's a very cozy location and we loved our stay there.

As a pregnant woman, the futons were not comfortable for my third trimester aches (my non-pregnant husband had no problems with it), however Oraphin was kind enough to provide an extra futon to help cushion my bed a little more. The kerosene heater made us a little wary as there wasn't a way to ventilate the room without opening our door. The rest of the house is not heated which isn't a big problem unless you are walking to the bathroom during the night, so I suggest bringing a bathrobe.

The historical Matsuo house is located in the center of town wity easy access to the cable lifts, onsens, restaurants, rental shops, and the convenience store. It was a pleasure to stay here, and to interact with the Matsuo family and other guests at their home.

The home is cozy and the room warms up very quickly so it’s no problem to stay during the winter. it is also nice that it is possible to use the kitchen. and it is close to the slopes and to all the onsens.
