The one thing I found was the kitchen was not well stocked with pots and pans. I like to cook but was able to make do with what was available plus what I took with me from home. There was plenty of glassware and other dishes.

We loved your home it was very spacious and particularly clean. We found everything we needed in the kitchen. There was one set of outside lights on either side of the game room windows, they must stay on all the time? Because we could not find a switch for those. Better directions for using the television would be recommended. Fortunately MICHAEL, the property manager, was able to help us figure it out. Also some directions for use of the hot tub would be a good idea, as I didn’t use it because I couldn’t figure out how to turn the temperature up. As an aside our mini dachshund was able to get under the three season room. Of course not under my supervision with a leash on, but when my husband let her off leash… She was under approximately 30 feet. This created a bit of a problem because she was so far and we couldn’t get her out. Again, his fault but it should be noted that the foundation and lattice does not go all the way to the ground in some places. Nonetheless, I would highly recommend this relaxing property for all sizes of parties. We loved that there were two televisions so we didn’t have to watch the same shows… Just like at home, where we watch different programs. When we were looking for the realty/property management office we had a bit of trouble… They did warn us that GPS didn’t work. However, mentioning that it’s a small Plaza would’ve been helpful. Thank you for a very relaxing stay!

My son hopped out of the hot tub and punctured the bottom of his foot on a rusty screw that looked to be a tie down that was no longer used. We assume it was covered by the step ladder to get into the hot tub, but we had moved it not realizing what was underneath. Quick trip to the Davis ER (we were expecting much longer wait) for an updated tetanus shot, some antibiotic ointment and band aids and he was feeling better quickly. The house wifi was spotty. I think we were able to use it maybe five hours or so during our stay. An updated router would probably do wonders. We would stay here again, but having these issues addressed would make this home perfect.

Property was as described. I echo the some of the comments regarding the bedroom with the twin beds and the third bed: the double bed in that room is sloped and appeared unusable. However, we had more than enough comfortable beds for the 5 adults. Also echo the comments regarding the jets in the hot tub. Only a few worked. But it was still enjoyable. Management seems to have heard the comments about the cookware. We brought our own specialty pans but found there to be more than adequate cookware to suit our needs.

Definitely needs new mattresses on all beds. Need cable TV and TV'S in all rooms. Wifi is spotty. The beautiful October mountain's and trails made up for a lot of it.

The home was exactly like the pictures. The hot tub was excellent! My wife spent an hour in the Jacuzzi tub! We was out and about doing things during the day, but really enjoyed the evenings at the house. It was clean and plenty of room for the five of us. We was able to relax and enjoy our three days there.

Overall, this place was sufficient for our group of 4 adults, 2 teens, 2 kids, 1 baby, and a dog. Pros: enough seating, air conditioning in August was great, decent sized rooms, the sun room was my personal favorite for puzzling and drinking morning coffee, several puzzles were already there, dog friendly. The little pond was a huge hit for the kids! Cons: the bedroom with three beds is cute, but the beds were not great (even for the kids). Hotgtub is functional but some jets don't work (there was a yellow jacket nest underneath the hot tub, but we got some bee spray and took care of it). There are no walking trails in easy access to this property. The marsh in the backyard is beautiful, but not walkable at all. It would have been nice to walk out the door and take a nature walk or just play in the yard, but it was very wet the whole time. Pretty close to other houses. When I pulled in, I thought I was at the wrong house because it looks so different from listing photos. Conclusion: Next time, we will probably get a place closer to trails and further from other houses if possible.

The house was designed lovely. Loved the privacy. We liked the artwork. It could really rent for more $$ if the furnishings were upgraded: broken furniture, pool table horrible, one stick functioning? The kitchen had 1 small fry pan that the coating was flaking off, miserable cooking instruments. 1 small old fry pan for a 4 bedroom house of guests?? The hot tub was nice. We would return, but will bring kitchenware!

More on the 4.5 star rating for a mountain home: pros than cons below which is why the 4 star rating…First thing we noticed when we walked inside was the cleanliness. Often times, I find myself cleaning for an hour, when we rent other Canaan rentals, but NOT this one! The house is equipped with necessities for the stay—No Keurig but 2 other coffee makers available. TV’s worked well. Good WiFi! Loved the pool table-we used it quite a bit (bumpers are old though and need a couple new cue sticks) and puzzles. The sun room was a huge plus! Washer/dryer worked very well! The beds are comfortable and the hot tub was good (jets are weak though). CONS: Well, the outside is very overgrown/marshy and barely a view from the back deck/hot tub when sitting. Trees in the front need trimming going into main door…This can be expected in the mountains and acceptable, but please update your pictures for improved transparency. Bedroom with the 3 beds—needs a new full size bed-very very uncomfortable and slants quite a bit. Otherwise, we had a great time, felt comfortable in this home (family of 5) and there was plenty of room for everyone to be move about comfortably. We would rent this house again in the future , if available. Have fun!

Toilet lid broken and master bedroom. Outside landscaping terrible weeds all the way up within two feet of the property. Was very disappointed with the whole experience. House was okay it was large but mattresses were terrible. I have always stayed VHBO this was the first time I was so disappointed.

The house did have a very musty odor that we think may have been from the carpet but subsided after we had some fresh air and air circulation. The whole place could definitely use a deep clean (dusty fans, very dirty sun room floor, not vacuumed well, deep clean the showers, etc.) We would stay here again but I don't think it would be our first choice. I know it can be hard with a pet friendly location but there needs to be more focus on the cleanliness. The house itself has amazing potential and is nicely laid out, but some upgrades could do the place wonders! The hot tub was nice but some of the jets don't work and it didn't get very warm. The back porch was nice and the woodsy view was a plus.

The photos of the outside are very dated. Probably 10 years. The outside is overgrown. Weeds everywhere in the flowerbeds. The pond is overgrown now. The house desperately needs the green algae power washed and then painted. The inside was filthy. Every ceiling fan was caked in dust. The cabinets above the stove had dirt caked on them. Some lights were either missing bulbs or had bulbs blown. For a cabin that sleeps 10, there isn’t near enough pots and pans to cool a meal. The Ice maker in the fridge didn’t work. The mattress in the 4th bedroom wasn’t suitable for a pet to sleep on. Half the springs were busted. Lastly, the rec room smelled of pet urine. We didn’t even use it

We fully enjoyed our stay at the property. The griddle doesn't work but we managed LOL The grills outside were dirty so we didn't use those either. The firering is too close to the neighbors so we avoided that. We wondered why there were so many TVs but 1 worked but honestly we weren't there to watch TV anyhow, so many great trails to hike. We would stay again if we were allotted the time in our schedules. The home was spacious, cozy and welcoming & full of kitchen supplies.

The place was very nice in a great location. They didn’t have much toilet paper there and the pool table needs new bumpers and only 2 of the cue sticks were functional

We really enjoyed our stay here. The location is great and only about 20-30 minute drive to the waterfalls. The hot tub is located in the back of the house and facing the trees and mountain. Very private and quiet area. We highly recommend this place.

Bears retreat was a fabulous choice for my small family reunion of seven. I would definitely choose it again for this particular group. Unfortunately there are a few issues which really ought to be addressed. People with expectations of "like new condition" will be disappointed. What's great: The location: This house backs onto the wildlife refuge, and the river literally runs through it. There is a stream just 6 ft from the house. Bring waders, binoculars and bird guides and enjoy instant access to the marsh. You can sit in the hot tub and feel a million miles from anyone. That visual isolation is unusual in this dense development of vacation homes. The house is a manageable drive to the grocery in Davis and a half hour from Seneca Rocks, climbing heaven, and is surrounded by hiking trails. If you are all about the outdoors, this is a fantastic location. The house: With four different living area w varying levels of privacy, the house comfortably accommodated our groups need for shared public space in a variety of configurations. Our favorite room is the sunroom steps from the river which we used for an office, dining room, and bird watching. The kitchen: The kitchen is fairly well equipped for a rental. We do a LOT of cooking and found the tools we needed -- except any decent pans. The pots and crockery are fine, but if we rent again, we will bring our own pans. Don't expect a pantry stocked with kitchen basics - we found only salt and pepper. Communications : while inconsistent, wifi was good enough to support 3 people w daily zoom meetings in multiple locations thru the house. The Verizon user had phone issues but ATT has coverage in the house. What needs attention: Running down: we had no issues we couldn't live with, but encountered many little things that make the house feel a bit run down. The little bedroom has a broken bed, a broken wardrobe, and broken drawers. The coat pegs in the entryway are missing multiple pegs. The fire pit has broken legs. The upstairs bathroom sink drains slowly. Much of the wooden furniture is looking "distressed." Supplies were insufficient -- not enough garbage bags, dishwasher soap, laundry detergent, paper towels. No shampoo, no kitchen sponges. Ants: around the kitchen sink, but didn't get into our food. BYO books & guides, they are not stocked. For outdoor lovers ok w a little wear & tear, this house has A LOT to offer.

Be warned, the photos of the home are very dated. We’ve stayed in a lot of properties over the years and while that is not uncommon, these are very dated. The back yard us basically bog now full of dead tees and lots of water. There is not a grassy back yard at all. The house itself is nice, comfortable beds.

The ants were a real issue too. Again, it’s not uncommon to have issues in homes with ants, we’ve had them in other properties. But these were the worst I’ve experienced, they’d make their way onto us, our dog... they really need to do something about it. Wouldn’t stay again unless ant problem resolved.

The hot tub was a definite plus, as well as the numerous gas fireplaces (once you figure out how to turn them on). Super close to the base of Timberline. While the snow was melting while we were there, I imagine this would be a relatively easy location to access, even during times of peak snow.

Unfortunately, not much has been changed/updated since then. The home is beautiful and in a great setting, the interior could use a very good cleaning; more comfortable furniture including beds (although the King bed in the Master bedroom is comfortable) we purchased air mattresses for the two sleeping on the twin size beds because they were uncomfortable and the double bed in that same bedroom may have a broker frame as it leans heavily toward the wall you lay down in it; maintenance needs done on some lamps that are not working and some of the light fixtures/dimmer switches are not functioning; also the deck area in the back could use a good power washing as it is molded and dirty. The fire pit was bent up and unusable, although there was a new charcoal grill. Favorite part of this house is the view into the wetlands and stargazing from the hot tub. We tend to cook a lot when in Canaan and I usually cook for a large group, the kitchen could benefit from some nicer dishes, pot/pans, plates and bowls.

I am not sure I would choose to stay in this house again due to the updates needed.
