This beautiful, clean property, situated in a lush green forest, was the perfect choice for our large extended family gathering in May. We were 14 guests of many ages, but there was always a possibility we might have had more, and it was nice to know we had room to sleep 20 just in case. Our elderly folks were quite comfortable among the 4 queen bedrooms on the main floor, without ever using stairs, to their delight. The kids were quite happy to be together in bedrooms on the lower floor, near the pool table (The site of a secret midnight pool tournament... rumor has it.) There are many different family rooms sprinkled around the 2 buildings, providing the various age groups to gather independently. Other indoor activities are available, and the very large ping pong game room above the garage was perfect for our rainy day. A VERY long dining table was key for seating 12 of us with even a few more at the counter, and the two extra refrigerators in the garage meant that our many meals over 5 days were possible without any food runs. Relatives all got a chance to reconnect while seated together. The large BBQ got used every night, and can officially fit 16 large steaks. Hiking trails (hilly) provided a bit of exercise and bird-spotting, while the fire pit was a big hit in the chilly evening. (Thanks to our awesome host for providing firewood!) Our host, Jake, was very responsive, before and throughout the rental process. We could not have asked for a better experience.

Wow is the first word that came out of everybody’s mouth. This place accommodated 20+ of our extended family to celebrate my mother in law’s 70th Birthday. The property is immaculate, very private, full stocked and well maintained. Hot tub, pool table, ping pong table and the Basketball hoop were a big hit. The hiking trail is definitely a must. Jake the host was awesome with communication and even had a welcome basket full of goodies. We had a Wonderful time with this property. Will definitely come back or will try Jake’s other property.

This house was the gathering spot for family members from NY and VA. It worked out perfectly and met all of our needs. From the stocked kitchen to the provided items, this house made it easy to arrive and feel right at home. We made great use of the hot tub, the basketball hoop, the trails behind the house and all the indoor gathering spots. Would definitely return in the future and highly recommend others consider! Jake's responsiveness was the cherry on top -- he was excellent!

I cannot say enough good things about this listing--just thinking about it makes me smile :) I rented this property for our extended family's holiday retreat (10 adults, 9 kids!) and it was truly a magical experience. The cabin is laid out beautifully with enough room for all of our guests, even a super kid-friendly lower level with bunk beds and game room. There's even a hot tub for the "bigger" kids :) The kitchen is extremely well stocked with a great layout (open plan, pass-through with counter seating) that made the non-stop meal prep (again, 9 kids) a breeze. The dining room table even has 7 extra leaves and could accommodate our whole crew. We brought a fair amount of food/groceries with us, however, there is a smaller grocery nearby (15-20min) for immediate needs and larger/more shopping options about 40min away in Lewistown. The cabin itself is super cozy and even has a backup generator in the event of power outages. The cell phone reception is not great, however there is a landline and wi-fi, so easy enough to set up wi-fi calling on your mobile device, should you feel the need. The cabin also sits on 20+ acres, great for day hikes and outing with the kids. There is also a covered porch lined with bird feeders that made for some excellent bird-watching. Perhaps the best part about this property is the host and his service team. :) Jake was incredibly helpful and responsive to all of our needs. We were five different households covening during a massive winter storm and he went above and beyond to make sure we had easy/safe access to the property and stayed nice and cozy throughout the low temps. (Surprisingly good temperature regulation for a cabin!) From the excellent communication and meticulously cared for property to the welcoming decor and decorations, there's a reason he has the "super host" designation. I have been an avid patron of VRBO and its like competitors for a decade in at least a dozen countries and Jake was hands down our best host, to date. In summary, EXCELLENT listing. Highly recommend...so long as you don't try to book it when I am :)

Our stay at shade mountain retreat was wonderful from start to finish! A weekend away with friends and family in a beautiful home was just what was needed! The house was beautiful, spacious, extremely clean, and stocked with everything you could think of! I cannot say enough nice things about the host, Jake. He answered every question I had for him almost immediately and went completely out of way to make our stay amazing! A 5 star experience the entire weekend! Thank you, Jake! We plan on coming back next year!

First off Jake was amazing! He always responded very quickly before and during our stay. There was so much space, rooms and bathrooms the 16 of us never felt crammed. He provided enough table space and chairs for us all to sit together at the dinner table for Thanksgiving. It was great too with that many people to have 3 refrigerators. The direct TV was nice since like he stated in his overview of the place that you have no cell service and the wifi isn't the best when you have so many people trying to be on it. But he was very upfront about it so we already knew there was nothing he can do about it. Like he also stated there really isn't close access to a large department store so just come prepared. We did and we had no issue. Very nice place and we all were able to have our own rooms. We went on a hike on his trail as well a couple of times which was very nice. It is a steeper hike but a great workout and great to get one with nature. Thanks Jake! We will definitely be back and loved the place!

We absolutely loved the cabin and property and all it had to offer. We pick a different destination every year for our class gang of 11 for a long weekend, but it we every decide to visit this area again we would definitely book this cabin. Blessings Tina Supenia

The communication from Jake was outstanding. He responded and followed up within minutes. Even answered a question from a family member immediately. Jake even took time to check in throughout the weekend to see if anything was needed.

We have stayed at many vrbo’s and air bnb’s and without a doubt this is one of the nicest! The house is even more beautiful than the pictures, it was equipped with everything we could have needed, and Jake was an outstanding host - responded to any questions we had within minutes! It was a convenient retreat for our extended family while attending our son’s wedding at Juniata Winery. Thank you Jake!

This was our second trip to Shade Mountain Retreat, and I cannot say enough good things about it. The space is perfect for us: plenty of separate bedrooms and great common areas for activities, both inside and outside. The bedrooms each have their own décor, which really adds to the sense of a home away from home, rather than just a corporate retreat setting. We really loved having a hot tub AND instructions for how to refill it (you wouldn’t believe how many vacation homes leave you to figure it out on your own). Gorgeous porches on both sides of the house, and a fire pit? Sign me up. With plenty of outdoor space, you feel secluded, which just increases the sense of togetherness. The home also comes well stocked. There are plenty of plates, cups, toilet paper. The kitchen has most of the standard tools you would expect. The home also has all the linens you need, including special towels for the hot tub. We are so grateful to have such a warm and welcoming space for our friendly get-togethers. This house would be perfect for an extended family holiday or a multi-family vacation. We hope you enjoy it as much as well do (just don’t take our dates for our next trip)!

My friends and I go an adults vacation ever year for a 4-day staycation and renting from Jake this year was an amazing experience! His house looks exactly like the pictures and the way he describes his house is completely accurate! We were surprised in how clean and well quibbed his house was, I was very shocked to see that he had made sure there was a very big pile of firewood outside, how well stocked his kitchen was with all appliances, and just having the basics there just in case like toilet paper paper towels and napkins shows that he appreciates his guests. There really couldn’t have been a better house to stay at because there was just so much to do and the house is perfectly laid out that if somebody want to nap during the day they were disturbed, and we were on top of each other eitherJake is very communicative throughout the whole process and while we were there he checked in to ensure that everything was going smoothly.

Jakes place was perfect for our family reunion! The place is just as described and very clean. The trails outback were a bonus- so beautiful ! Jake was very responsive.

I went to Jake's cabin with a crew of 14 friends, and we had a fantastic time! The cabin is extremely spacious as the pictures suggest, so there were tons of spaces we could all hang out in and have fun together. We ended up making use of all of them, including the huge garage space with its own game room/loft. The cabin is clearly well taken care of. As the reviews suggest, everything we needed regarding cleaning supplies was already stocked. The kitchen was more than sufficient for us to cook for our huge crew. Capping this all off was excellent communication with Jake -- I've been rending cabins for our crew for years and I don't think I've ever interacted with a property manager as friendly and attentive. Never waited more than a few minutes for a reply, and he even allowed us the option of a late checkout, making our final morning much more pleasant. Highly recommended!

The home was nice, and the owner communicated well throughout the process. Our only problem was the location. Not much around and we all lost complete service when we were about 30 minutes near the property. So we stayed inside. But overall we made the most of it and enjoyed the home!

Our stay was comfortable and we lacked nothing. Everything we can think of that we may need was provided by the host. He was very responsive to messages. This place was very clean and everything worked. This is a great place to stay and I would definitely use again and recommend it to anyone.

Three families (6 adults and 7 kids ages 12-15) gathered over a rainy weekend at Shade Mtn. Retreat and had a wonderful time! We arrived with clear instructions of how to settle in, and found the house to be very well appointed and clean. There was enough room for all of us to either gather together for meals, movies, pool & ping pong tournaments--or space out for privacy/quiet time/reading. We had a few windows when the rain stopped --so we enjoyed a hike and then s'mores around the fire pit. (The wood was dry/covered and available, so it was easy to light and enjoy.) The covered porches allowed us to enjoy the fall colors while sipping coffee. (The kids also enjoyed saying hello to the two chickens and rooster in the morning. ) The dining table was a favorite gathering space for meals, as well as for crafting some jewelry. The hot tub was clean and a nice way to warm up on a cool, damp day, and it really saved so much room (packing wise) to not have to bring our own towels. We really loved our stay at Shade Mtn. This property was amazing! We had 15 people, and it had plenty of space to spread out and we never felt crowded. Beautiful space and a great trail out back! I highly recommend this place!

Our family had an absolutely amazing three-nights stay at Shade Mountain Retreat, Lack Township, PA. The house was perfect for our extended family of 17. The house had everything to make our stay most enjoyable. It could very well accommodate a group of 20 without compromising on space. The host was very easy to communicate with and was always ready to help. The kitchen was packed. Highly recommended.

If allowed I would have gave this place a higher rating. This house was clean and well kept. The privacy of this place was phenomenal. My group brought car loads of supplies to find that this place was fully stocked and had to return with almost all the supplies we brought. Only thing you need here is Food and Drinks. House was beautiful and the Garage was the bonus of it all. Due to afternoon rain storms we were able to play games and enjoy the rain without getting wet.

We had a great time. Jacob was extremely easy to reach and responsive, and the property is as advertised. Everything is clean and in working order, and its a beautiful place with hummingbirds all over which is adds to the magic. As mentioned by other reviews, the house is located in a rural area and the internet isn’t fantastic, but be real that’s not why you come out. We had a blast by the firepit, grilling and playing cornhole (bring your own set). Plenty of comfortable spaces to set up gaming if thats what you are into (and we are). Mifflin isnt terribly far to go if you need supplies and the drive is lovely. All in all, a wonderful place to stay.

The property is wonderful and we had a great time. There are ample bedrooms for many guests, kitchen has lots of great features (2 ovens, ample plates and silverware) and the pool + ping pong tables make for a great unplugged time. They've done really well with the small touches for this location (e.g. firepit, hummingbird feeder, grill, etc). There's a great hike called 1,000 steps not too far away, which had an awesome view. Would definitely recommend for big families or groups of friends looking for some time away.

Beautifully located home with room for the entire family plus more! Perfect for those looking to get away from it all. Heads up there is little to no cell service in the area and if you have a large group the WiFi can have trouble keeping up, works great when not everyone is trying to use a device at the same time :). There is a landline at the home to make calls. Would recommend and visit again should the situation arise.
