a noisy neighbour woke me at 4am with singing. Walls are paper thin. The Hotel part is far at the back and is run down with threadbare carpets, big gaps between the door and outside hallway and no sound proofing between rooms means you can hear everything. Radiator made loud clanking noises or dripping noises because its all old. Curtains didnt close properly. television in room was so small as to be unusable. I paid £1 for the drying machine to dry my clothes, only it didn’t work and nothing got dried. For functions like weddings etc this venue is probably ok, but if you need a place just to sleep i would advise going further out of town. Decor is like they did it once in 1970 and then never changed anything.

Great old club hotel near Dockyards - great location and old school charm in the public areas and the rooms have a nice interior update to modern look. Breakfast & dinner at hotel restaurant very good. Only problem was the glass barrier on shower leaked by and left a large puddle on bathroom floor.

A really good hotel with good food, comfy rooms, friendly staff and a great location. Only negative is that the heating is a bit loud but I'd definitely stay here again

Looked very grand when entering. Lobby was fine, Bar was fine, Reception was ok. We was told we had a room upgrade so was quite happy. We took the lift to the 3rd floor and when the doors opened we were in shock. We had entered a 70s nightmare. The corridor was painted white over the old wallpaper, the walls had lines of conduit running everywhere, the room doors had seen better days. It was awful. We checked out each floor and they were all the same. Our room was newly painted but not finished nicely. The bathroom had been forgotten though with a lovely strip of hazard tape for a threshold and the room was cold. Can't fault the cleanliness though!! The food in the restaurant was good too and staff were friendly. A disappointing stay. I don't think we'll be back.

Budget usually means no frills and basic .. NOT .. wallpaper peeling off walls, filthy marks all over walls, taps that were worn through chrome to be more brassy looking, paintwork chipped very extensively, no blinds or curtains in bathroom window with buildings directly opposite!! Really very disappointed. Very very scruffy room!!

Very happy with choice. Friendly staff, good wifi and good location. Only had light dinner but was excellent. Yes the carpets in the corridor need replacing , and the tv in the rooms are small but I found the hotel has an incredibly relaxing ambience that I cant explain, it made wish I was staying for another night !

Liked that it was Military themed and Used by Veterans for Re-Unions, Parties, and Veterans Outreach Centre.
Did not like when booking out Asylum Seekers being booked in to Military Themed and Use by Veterans Hotel I thought this was an inappropiate place to be used for Asylum Seekers.

Not a great room. Wallpaper was peeling, carpet was very dirty. The room was very dated. There was a horrible musty smell in the room. We asked for a refurbished room but were told we had booked a budget room and this is what we got!!! The price was not reflective of a budget hotel. We would not stay here again. The only good thing about our stay was the fantastic meal we had at the steakhouse which was a 5 minute walk away.

Arrived jet lagged from Canada. Slept in the following morning and missed breakfast. Had prepaid for the first mornings breakfast only but was staying for five night. Was not allowed to transfer that missed breakfast to another day....very petty and unreasonable considering that it was a standard buffet breakfast.... very disappointed.

Warm, comfortable, clean and friendly staff. Ideal location to stay, if you want to be near historic sites in Portsmouth.

As others have mentioned there is no aircon, not an issue for me as used to high 20's in Melbourne Vic. Just need to open window overnight, be aware Street noise is loud until close to midnight.
If this is an issue then this property may not be for you.
Good breakfast and nice, polite and helpful staff. It is a yes from me for any future stays in Portsmouth.

This is an old hotel with no AC and no fridge in the classic and budget rooms. However, it is somewhat charming due to its nice decor and rich history. Reception and cleaning staff are pleasant and accommodating. The location is rather convenient, safe, and quiet.

This is an old hotel with no AC and no fridge in rooms. House cleaning service was inconsistent in the budget room, but I assume it is due to it being short-staff. Despite its shortcomings, this hotel is somewhat charming due to its rich history and cool decor. The reception and cleaning staff are pleasant and accommodating. I like its location because it is nice and quiet, not too far from the busy shopping/dining areas/Historic Dockyard, and close to bus stops.

Room was ok, hotel in general a bit dated. Had to go to reception 3 times because card key didn't work and toilet wouldn't flush in our room. Room was a good size and bed was comfy but would have liked an iron and ironing board in there. Good location for Gunwharf and historic dockyard but only about 10 parking spaces so ok if coming by train.

Clean rooms but slightly out dated. Paid for breakfast for one day but disappointing as the food trays were empty, no fried egg, no sausage, no scrambled eggs and no hash browns . Milk jug was empty, along with the jug of orange juice. Nothing was being replenished despite just taking our money. The fried eggs and hash browns were then cooked on request whilst everything else had gone cold. Good location and close to the shops and transport facilities.

We stayed during one of the hottest days in the summer, and the lack of air con detracted from our visit. The 3rd floor room was extremely hot, even hotter than outside. We we exhausted and jet lagged, so not happy. Also, our bathroom smelled of cigarette smoke, so that was unpleasant but we tolerated it. Hallway carpeting and walls need attention.

The hotel was overall great value for money. Excellent location, a few minutes walk from Gunwharf Quays and a nice longer walk to Portsmouth city centre. We got there early, before check-in time and they let us park our car in one of the hotel allocated spaces, which was amazing.
We were originally allocated a room on the second floor, but it was right next to a really loud generator. As we stayed on one of the hottest day of the summer, there was no way we would have been able to sleep with the windows open and that noise next to our window. We were able to change room, to a room on the third floor, a bit farther from the generator (which seems to be on both sides of the hotel). There was a small fan in the room, which helped with the heat. However, the generator was still pretty loud overnight, especially when it switched itself back on at 4am. I'm sure it would not be a problem if you stayed in winter.
The doors slam really loudly in the corridor too - if you are a light sleeper, this might be a problem.
That aside, the room was really nice and the bed was very comfortable.
Breakfast was excellent! It was a buffet with everything you could think of, from cooked items (bacon, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, sausages, hash browns, fried bread) to yogurt granola, toast with jam, etc. Everything was replenished as it run out.

I had to carry my baby in the pram up on the 2nd floor, because the lift was broken. The staff did not help and I asked another guest.
I think there is only about 13-15 parking spaces, so probably you'll end up paying extra for the car park.
The swimming pool is only little and the jacuzzi was out of order.
Amazing food, perfectly cooked breakfast!

Reception was very neat and efficient. Room was clean and well presented.
The day was very hot and therefore the room at night was stifling and very difficult to get a good sleep. The room has no air conditioning.
